OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --Sprint (NYSE: S) announced that 11 schools across the state of New York will be awarded grants for character-education initiatives in the 2010-2011 school year through the Sprint Character Education Grant Program. Schools will be awarded Sprint Foundation grants of up to $5,000 for in-school programs that address and promote youth leadership, youth volunteerism, a positive school culture and drop-out prevention.

Now in its third year, the Sprint Character Education Grant Program awards Sprint Foundation grants to school districts and individual schools to fund resources that facilitate and encourage character education among K-12 students. With a national reach, the program is open to all U.S. public schools (K-12) and U.S. public school districts.

"Teachers and administrators are already doing fantastic work in our schools, but all too often their passion and creativity has to be restrained by their limited financial resources," said Debby Ballard, director of Community Affairs for Sprint. "Through the Sprint Character Education Grant Program, the Sprint Foundation will provide crucial funding, allowing these educators to develop and execute character-education programs that will help these children become productive citizens."

Schools and districts applied for grants earlier this year in an open-application process. Applications were reviewed by an independent third-party panel, comprised of members of the Character Education community. All recipients were notified last week, and all 2010 grants will be awarded by early August.

Sprint 4G Helps Chicago Food Bank Feed More

The Greater Chicago Food Depository goes mobile with 4G in food stamps sign-up drive, touching thousands more families in need.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --The Greater Chicago Food Depository is proof that the value of 4G spans all business types - from large enterprise companies to non-profits operating on a tight budget.

Today, Sprint (NYSE: S) business customers use 4G applications to improve care in hospitals, keep crime in check through mobile video surveillance, gather television news in ways never seen before, and access real-time data instantaneously.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository uses 4G to bring food to families who need it.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository feeds 142,000 people a week in conjunction with local partners including pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Last year, it distributed 58 million pounds of food to the community.

Despite the success in food distribution, the depository was challenged on how to broaden the availability of food stamps to eligible recipients. "Either people didn't know about the food stamps program, didn't know where to sign up, or didn't know if they were eligible," said Muhammad Khan, IT director-Greater Chicago Food Depository.

To address the challenge, the food depository equipped food stamp outreach coordinators with Sprint 4G-powered laptops. They criss-crossed Cook County, going from food pantries to city agencies to churches to community centers to sign up eligible recipients. Using laptops, the coordinators widened the reach of the food stamp program dramatically and sped up the sign-up process for hundreds of applicants using 4G speeds and broadband capacity.

"By taking the program on the road - so to speak - with the help of Sprint 4G, the number of people we touched and the awareness we created grew exponentially," Khan said. "With the 4G network, the speed and capacity for sending data is impressive. The faster the connection speed, the more people the coordinators can help in the few hours they spend at each agency."

"The depository's story is not unusual," said Todd Rowley, Sprint vice president-4G. "We see all the time how 4G changes the trajectory of a business, makes it more efficient, cuts operating costs, enables a better process for doing business and - like the depository - changes the lives of people."

Sprint is the first national carrier to roll out 4G. Sprint 4G is currently available in 32 markets covering about 41 million people. By the end of this year Sprint expects to launch 4G service in such major markets as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington, D.C., and cover a population of 120 million.

This summer, Sprint launches the world's first 3G/4G Android(TM) handset, HTC EVO(TM) 4G, exclusively from Sprint. HTC EVO 4G delivers a multimedia experience at 4G speeds that are second to none, making it possible to download music, pictures, files or videos in seconds - not minutes - and watch streaming video on-the-go with one of the largest pinch-to-zoom displays, at 4.3 inches, in the wireless industry.

Sprint already offers six 4G devices, including the Overdrive(TM) 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Sierra Wireless, a hotspot capable of connecting up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices (such as iPhone, iTouch, Palm Pre, laptops, gaming devices) to the Sprint 3G or 4G networks where available. With the Overdrive, any Wi-Fi enabled device, including the recently launched iPad, can become a 4G device.

AT&T Creates Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions Group To Focus On Applications And Solutions For Workplaces Of All Sizes

Company Appoints Veteran Officer to Lead Initiative to Help Mobilize Businesses and Organizations.

AT&T* said it is creating a new group within its Business Solutions unit to accelerate the delivery of advanced mobile applications and solutions for traditional and emerging devices to businesses, governments and organizations of all sizes globally. The group – to be called Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions – will complement AT&T’s Emerging Devices Organization which focuses on devices that are wirelessly enabled for consumers.

Michael Antieri has been named President of the Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions unit and assumes responsibility for the development, sales and deployment of mobile applications and solutions for organizations whose workforces and customers are increasingly doing business “on the go” using all kinds of connected devices – both traditional and emerging devices.

“Companies today are more mobile than ever, traveling to clients, working from remote locations, using devices to communicate while on the move, and wirelessly connecting devices to each other,” said Ron Spears, President and CEO of AT&T Business Solutions. “With millions of workers now using smartphones, netbooks and rugged devices, and with multiple industries now adopting machine-to-machine applications, we see a tremendous opportunity to bring the power of our networking expertise and assets to help companies everywhere ‘go mobile’ by mobilizing their business processes to take advantage of real-time information and transactions to do business more efficiently and productively.”

U.S. businesses are increasingly depending on mobile applications. Industry analyst firm IDC [1], found that there were more than 450 million mobile Internet users worldwide in 2009, a number that is expected to more than double by the end of 2013. In addition, according to IDC [2], the United States has the highest percentage of mobile workers today − growing to an estimated 75 percent of workers by 2013.

Over the last two years, AT&T has tripled the number of business subscribers who are using integrated devices. In the last year alone, the company has seen a 60 percent increase in business subscribers, as “enterprise-class” devices and applications continue to proliferate within a host of industries, including manufacturing, financial services, consumer packaged goods, retail, trade, construction, transportation, government education and healthcare.

Antieri, a 31-year company veteran, will head the new Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions business unit focused on delivering mobility solutions specific to these industries. The unit will work with developers and third-party providers to help co-innovate and deliver applications in a network and cloud-based environment that easily allows them to extend new services down to any desired device.

“Very few players in the industry have the breadth of AT&T assets and the capillary density of AT&T’s distribution channels to reach out and touch customers across of the enterprise, small business and government spaces,” said Michael Antieri, President, Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business Solutions. “Building upon AT&T’s already successful Emerging Devices Organization, we will work closely with the AT&T EDO team to harness their strengths and investments, and work with businesses to mobilize their applications, transform their business processes and capture the potential opportunities that M2M technology offers.”
