Access the web on the new screens

Monday, May 24, 2010

Opera to introduce web solutions for e-readers and tablets at Computex 2010.

While the proliferation of new screens on more devices presents exciting opportunities for OEMs and gives operators options to add devices and services to their existing portfolios, Opera Software, the only cross-platform, cross-device browser company, introduces web solution for e-readers and tablets. The company will also exhibit its latest full web-standards-based web solutions for connected devices during Computex, June 1-5, 2010, in Taipei, Taiwan.

Industry analysts have predicted that 2010 will be an explosive year for the mobile Internet devices. With multiple new e-reader devices and tablets being introduced, the market will be highly competitive. To have the content more viable for users to consume, the publishers intend to distribute their content through different platforms and devices. It is possible that more and more books and content available on standards-compatible, open platforms will be accessible across multiple devices. The web can act as the platform of choice, allowing access to content, the app stores and a whole host of apps on e-readers across devices and operating systems. The web browser is the key technology for these mobile Internet device owners to explore and access the web.

“The Opera browser engine supports various cross-platforms required to enable a competitive e-reader and tablet solution,” said Rolf Assev, Chief Strategy Officer, Opera Software. “To be able to adapt to changes in technology and standards, OEMs that manufacture many different kinds of devices will be able to take advantage of the platform-independent, cross-device capabilities of the Opera browser engine.”

The web solutions for e-readers and tablets are powered by the Opera Devices SDK and Opera for tablets. Opera Devices SDK allows e-reader OEMs to develop custom browsers based on the latest Opera Presto rendering engine that powers Opera’s range of browsers. Browsers based on the Opera Devices SDK are market-proven, expandable and have also been already deployed on a wide range of products such as TVs, games consoles, media players, and more. Opera for tablets provides a touch-optimized tablet browser user interface and out-of-the-box productive quality on Android and Windows CE. It also has the web-application platform, such as the end-to-end widget solution, the W3C-compliant widgets, the application store and the developer community.

Come see our latest, ready-to-market Opera Web solution at the Computex exhibit (Hall 1, D205). The participants will able to experience Opera on a variety of devices: Opera Widgets on the Orange Tabbee 7-inch Wi-Fi Internet tablet and the Intel CE3100 chipset for TV; Opera Devices on Nintendo DSi XL; Opera Mobile on smartphones such as HTC HD2, Samsung Instinct HD, Google Nexus One and more.

Finally, stay tuned for learning more views about the power of connecting. Rolf Assev will deliver a keynote address at the e21 FORUM, organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA). The forum will feature opinion leaders in the IT industry to unveil the most important trends and technology at Computex. Fitel plans to downsize capital by 60%, raise new capital via private placement

First International Telecom (Fitel), the only operator of PHS low-power mobile communication services, and a WiMAX licensee in Taiwan , plans to reduce its current paid-in capital of NT$4.5 billion (US$142 million) by 60% to cover its cumulative net loss of NT$4.39 billion, and then issue up to 2.1 billion new shares for private placement to introduce new shareholders, according to the company.

Fitel plans to kick off commercial operation of its WiMAX network in the second half of 2010, and this is related to the fund-raising project, according to industry sources. Viewing that PHS operation is on the decline in the Japan and China markets and has no growth potential in the Taiwan market, Fitel has to transform its operation to focus on WiMAX, the sources pointed out.

Maxisat Selects Motorola for IPTV Headend Upgrade

New headend solutions enable cost effective, high quality video service delivery.

Helsinki, Finland - Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced its Mobile Devices and Home business has signed a contract with Maxisat to upgrade the operator’s MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transcoding and MPEG-4 encoding capabilities. Deploying Motorola’s encoding solutions will provide enhanced, high video quality at exceptionally low bit rates which will enable Maxisat to more efficiently deliver high quality, rich video services to its Maxivision customers across Finland. This new contract builds on the existing set-top relationship between Motorola and Maxisat, under which Maxisat has rolled out Motorola’s VIP1900 Series IPTV set-tops.

Maxisat’s new IPTV headend will include Motorola’s standard definition MPEG-4 video encoder which combines receiver functions with advanced encoding technology to deliver both constant and variable bit rate video services at the lowest bit rates. The SE-4100 is an IP-centric platform that delivers flexibility, value and exceptional video quality and includes an HD upgrade option, meeting Maxisat’s requirements for cost effective bandwidth optimization today while providing flexibility for further growth and HD service delivery in the future.

As part of the headend upgrade, Motorola has qualified its Cherrypicker application platform and APEX high density EdgeQAM (previously deployed with Maxisat) to support the DVB SimulCrypt conditional access standard. This will enable Maxisat to secure its content on multiple delivery platforms as any third party conditional access will be able to communicate with the Cherrypicker and APEX for video and audio encryption.

“Maxisat is committed to delivering high quality services; we want to ensure our customer can enjoy an unparalleled viewing experience. Our over-the-top solution is one of the first in Europe to utilise over 90 digital channels for our customers to choose from. This all is delivered over the Internet to any connection over 2 Mbps broadband in Finland. Motorola’s headend solutions demonstrate superior video quality and cost effectiveness, giving us confidence in our purchasing decision,” said Tommi Blom, executive director of Maxisat. “This implementation will enable us to offer high quality IPTV services with superior bandwidth utilization.”

“The increasing demand for more entertainment, higher video quality and bandwidth efficiency has become a key business driver for service providers,” said Steve McCaffery, vice president and general manager, Motorola Home, EMEA. “Our portfolio of headend solutions has the depth and flexibility to meet a wide variety of distribution requirements, which ultimately allows service providers to more efficiently deliver rich video content to the consumer.”

Motorola has been a leader in digital video processing systems for nearly 20 years, having deployed more than 2,500 MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 digital headends as well as thousands of CherryPicker systems that optimize bandwidth and splice millions of ads every day around the world.
