OviDailyApp – Switching to Autopilot

Monday, May 24, 2010

GLOBAL – As our phones become more like computers, our expectations of how they ought to behave have risen in all kinds of ways. Perhaps one of the key ways this happens is in the area of customisation. The idea of a one-size-fits-all interface is quickly becoming quaint, a relic from a bygone era. And we’re not just talking ringtones and wallpapers anymore. Users today expect as much control of their phone’s inner workings as they do of their laptop.

So, for me, the highlights of the Ovi Daily App blog last week were Auto On and Profile+. They control what happens automatically when you power on your phone and switch profile, respectively. Both work with S60 3rd Edition and S60 5th Edition devices from Nokia.

Auto On is made by Migital and costs $2.99. As the name suggests, it starts other applications automatically when you power-up your device. Activating it brings up a list of all the applications you’ve installed, plus the native applications including settings widgets. You can put a tick next to the ones you want to start automatically. Whether or not this is a useful thing depends on your individual use of your phone’s wider functionality. If you use your device’s camera several times a day, or your instinctive habit is to check into Twitter and Facebook whenever there’s a spare moment, then you’ll save several seconds on every power-up.

Even more versatile, Profile+ from CEALogs ($0.99) does automatic app launching on a profile change. You might, for example, set up a ‘Driving’ profile that not only switches on the loudspeaker, but automatically launches OviMaps ready to give you directions.

Unfortunately, though, the program can’t close applications – so you can’t just instantly switch from your ‘Driving’ suite of apps to your ‘Meeting’ suite to your ‘Social Networking’ suite. Well, you can: but if you do, you’ll end-up opening more and more applications. Kevin at Daily App points out that there’s a security risk in allowing a third-party application the level of control required to switch off apps, but it’s one that I, too, would be prepared to accept for this degree of versatility. Here’s looking forward to the next iteration of this handy utility.

Nokia and Yahoo! team up in online services

New York, USA – Today Yahoo! and Nokia have joined forces to create enhanced, online experiences that help you communicate and locate. The pair have been working together over the past five years on a number of projects, from launching Yahoo! Go Mobile on Nokia devices to Nokia devices’ ability to upload pics onto Flickr. This latest venture, their biggest to date, will see improvements to email, instant messaging, maps and navigation services. Join us after the break to find out what changes the new alliance will bring.

As part of the alliance Nokia will be the exclusive provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, branded as “powered by Ovi.” Nokia brings its ample experience in top-drawer, location-based products and maps to Yahoo!’s users. In turn, Yahoo! will become the exclusive global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services, branded as “powered by Yahoo!.” Yahoo! brings its expertise in world-class internet offerings to the table for Ovi users.

Changes will also come in the form of Nokia and Yahoo! working together to improve access to a number of services. Initially, users with an Ovi ID will be able to unlock a myriad of handy internet and handset-based goodness from both partners. Some of the pain involved in trying to remember which of your hundreds of passwords you used may soon be over.

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia had this to say about the announcement:

“We’re enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings. Similarly, Yahoo!’s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile.”

Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo! joined OPK in his enthusiasm:

“We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile Web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo! users. At the same time, we believe Nokia’s strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business.”

The collaboration will see benefits to both Yahoo! and Nokia. Nokia will be able to engage with Yahoo!’s millions of users, particularly in the U.S. and vice versa. Ovi Mail regulars will be able to tap into new experiences and it’ll extend Yahoo!’s reach in emerging markets. All in all, it looks a pretty rosy deal.

Select co-branded offerings are expected to become available from the second half of 2010, with global availability in 2011.

Access the web on the new screens

Opera to introduce web solutions for e-readers and tablets at Computex 2010.

While the proliferation of new screens on more devices presents exciting opportunities for OEMs and gives operators options to add devices and services to their existing portfolios, Opera Software, the only cross-platform, cross-device browser company, introduces web solution for e-readers and tablets. The company will also exhibit its latest full web-standards-based web solutions for connected devices during Computex, June 1-5, 2010, in Taipei, Taiwan.

Industry analysts have predicted that 2010 will be an explosive year for the mobile Internet devices. With multiple new e-reader devices and tablets being introduced, the market will be highly competitive. To have the content more viable for users to consume, the publishers intend to distribute their content through different platforms and devices. It is possible that more and more books and content available on standards-compatible, open platforms will be accessible across multiple devices. The web can act as the platform of choice, allowing access to content, the app stores and a whole host of apps on e-readers across devices and operating systems. The web browser is the key technology for these mobile Internet device owners to explore and access the web.

“The Opera browser engine supports various cross-platforms required to enable a competitive e-reader and tablet solution,” said Rolf Assev, Chief Strategy Officer, Opera Software. “To be able to adapt to changes in technology and standards, OEMs that manufacture many different kinds of devices will be able to take advantage of the platform-independent, cross-device capabilities of the Opera browser engine.”

The web solutions for e-readers and tablets are powered by the Opera Devices SDK and Opera for tablets. Opera Devices SDK allows e-reader OEMs to develop custom browsers based on the latest Opera Presto rendering engine that powers Opera’s range of browsers. Browsers based on the Opera Devices SDK are market-proven, expandable and have also been already deployed on a wide range of products such as TVs, games consoles, media players, and more. Opera for tablets provides a touch-optimized tablet browser user interface and out-of-the-box productive quality on Android and Windows CE. It also has the web-application platform, such as the end-to-end widget solution, the W3C-compliant widgets, the application store and the developer community.

Come see our latest, ready-to-market Opera Web solution at the Computex exhibit (Hall 1, D205). The participants will able to experience Opera on a variety of devices: Opera Widgets on the Orange Tabbee 7-inch Wi-Fi Internet tablet and the Intel CE3100 chipset for TV; Opera Devices on Nintendo DSi XL; Opera Mobile on smartphones such as HTC HD2, Samsung Instinct HD, Google Nexus One and more.

Finally, stay tuned for learning more views about the power of connecting. Rolf Assev will deliver a keynote address at the e21 FORUM, organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taipei Computer Association (TCA). The forum will feature opinion leaders in the IT industry to unveil the most important trends and technology at Computex.
