BARCELONA, Mobile World Congress – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that First International Telecom (FITEL), a leading telecom operator in Taiwan, has awarded Motorola's Networks business a contract to deploy a WiMAX network in northern Taiwan. It is Motorola's second contract from FITEL, following a WiMAX network deployment announced in 2008, and reinforces the company's leadership in WiMAX technology in Taiwan and worldwide.
FITEL plans to launch commercial high-speed mobile data services based on the 4G technology this year after the WiMAX network is certified by the National Communications Commission (NCC) in March. The new data services will complement FITEL's existing voice services based on PHS, extending its mobile offerings and bringing new media mobility experiences to subscribers. Targeting businesses and residents, FiTEL's WiMAX network will enable the users with greater and stable throughput in uplink and downlink.
In 2008, Motorola has deployed WiMAX base stations for FITEL's network, including testing and fine tuning to fulfill its M-Taiwan-94-WiMAX project obligation under phase one of the project. Under phase two, Motorola will design, supply and deploy a comprehensive WiMAX network for FITEL, providing a fast-to-market and turnkey solution to meet the operator's needs. Motorola's end-to-end WiMAX solutions include high-performance and reliable WAP 450 base stations.
"The high-speed mobile data service is a fast growing market for operators. The new mobile broadband network based on WiMAX technology will enable FITEL to offer services such as mobile digital entertainment and low-cost broadband access, fulfilling customers' needs and creating new revenue streams," said Ms. Min Yu Chang, chairwoman of FITEL. "We are impressed by Motorola's advanced WiMAX solutions and their dedicated and professional servicing team. They ensure a fast and smooth deployment of such a sophisticated network. High performance and reliable services are important to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction."
Motorola has deployed WiMAX networks for three of the six operators who have acquired WiMAX licenses in Taiwan.
"We are pleased to work with FITEL to support their mobile network expansion and business development. As consumer and business users move to a mobile lifestyle, 4G technology is critical to operators' long-term growth. The WiMAX network will help FITEL offer state-of-the-art mobile services at a lower cost, improving the operator's competitiveness and operational efficiency," said Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, vice president and general manager, Networks, Motorola Asia Pacific.
