WALTHAM, Mass. -- Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced that it has renewed its multi-year global license agreement with Sony Ericsson to provide firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updating software and has expanded its contract to include device management (DM) software, available in the new Xperia™ X10.
Under the agreement, Sony Ericsson has licensed Red Bend's vRapid Mobile® for fast and fail-safe FOTA updating and vDirect Mobile™ for standards-based configuration and device management. Since 2004, Red Bend has provided remote software updating capability to nearly 100 Sony Ericsson-branded handsets, such as the Aino™ and W995, to give consumers the best experience with better performance, new applications and the latest features. The Xperia X10 is the first Sony Ericsson phone to include both FOTA and DM from Red Bend.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is the flagship handset in a family of phones coming to market during the first half of 2010, which integrates social media, communication and entertainment. Based on the Google Android platform, the Xperia X10 introduces a new user experience that will evolve across the product portfolio and expand over time, continuously introducing new features and, thanks to Red Bend capabilities, these new features will be made easily available over the air for mobile consumers.
"Over-the-air software updates have become an important capability for Sony Ericsson to keep our customers delighted with the latest mobile phone features," said Bjorn Westerlund, Service Business Manager for Sony Ericsson. "Since 2004, we have trusted Red Bend for enabling Sony Ericsson handsets to be updated reliably, rapidly and efficiently."
"As one of our first customers, Sony Ericsson has been a leader in using FOTA to improve the mobile experience of its consumers," said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. "We are proud that they have trusted Red Bend once again to provide software updating capability for Sony Ericsson handsets and have now adopted our cross-platform device management client, starting with their first Android device."
vRapid Mobile is the market share leader in FOTA, deployed in 620 million mobile devices including handsets, PC cards, WiMAX modems and M2M modules. vDirect Mobile is the industry's leading independent device management client that is interoperable with any server supporting standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA DM). Its modular architecture and cross-platform support improves time to market for mobile devices that must comply with operator requirements for OMA DM. Red Bend's software is used by eight of the top 10 handset manufacturers as well as tier one operators such as NTT DOCOMO and China Mobile.
