LAS VEGAS, NV — Verizon Wireless has revved up its high-speed network with even greater horsepower to serve race fans by deploying two high-tech Cells on Wheels (COWs) outside of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Additionally, the company boosted capacity of its permanent site serving the area.
The additional capacity and mobile sites strengthen the already robust Verizon Wireless network in Southern Nevada to handle the spike in calls, text messages, picture and video messages, Internet connections, and other wireless traffic during the race week.
“Our network teams are pros at handling big events here in Las Vegas – whether it’s a major sporting event like this or a large convention,” said Greg Carek, Southwest Region executive director of Network, Verizon Wireless. “It’s our mission to always have the strongest wireless network and services for local residents and visitors.”
This work is part of Verizon Wireless’ continuing effort to enhance the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G wireless network. In Nevada, the company invested nearly $55 million in network improvements during 2009, and more than half a billion dollars in the Silver State since 2000.
In 2010, Verizon Wireless plans to launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network – which will offer dramatically higher wireless speeds and reliability than even today’s most advanced 3G network – in 25 to 30 markets nationally.
