Dr. Cole currently serves as Director of the Center for the Digital Future and Research Professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism, a position he has held since 2005. He previously was on the faculty at UCLA and was Director of the UCLA Center for Communications Policy in the Anderson Graduate School of Management.
"I'm someone who is interested in how people use technology and how technology can change our lives, hopefully for the better," Cole explains. "I became convinced in the mid- to late-90s that interactive digital technology – first the web and now mobile – was going to be far more powerful than the traditional media of television and print."
In addition to his academic roles, he says, "I've always had to have one foot in the real world." Ten years ago, Dr. Cole founded the World Internet Project, which tracks and studies the way social, economic, and media lives are changing. Today, this on-going research is being conducted in 30 countries. Cole shares the statistics and analyses of the Center's research and advises on the formulation of policy with Congress, the White House, the FCC and governments around the world including Australia, Singapore, Qatar, and South Africa. He also works with companies including Microsoft, Group M/WPP, Ericsson, AT&T and AARP in crafting their digital strategies.
Ubiquity Chairman and CEO, Chris Carmichael says Dr. Cole's "vision, knowledge and insight complement the vision of Ubiquity." Carmichael defines Ubiquity as "the first 3-screen broadcasting company with the desire to involve and activate our customers and clients. Jeff sees our vision - because he is living it." Carmichael describes the addition of Dr. Cole to the company's board of directors as "intuition and analytics melded together."
Andrew Kaplan, Chairman of the Center for the Digital Future at USC and President, Networks for Sony Pictures Television commented on the appointment saying, "Jeff Cole's insight into consumer behavior and how people consume media will make him an invaluable asset to Ubiquity."
Dr. Cole believes that internet and mobile usage over the past 10 years has been truly transformational. In Ubiquity, he sees "the connection between technology and people. What Ubiquity has done and is doing is creating that power on the web to really, completely create and maintain control over our environment. I really do believe technology can change people's lives."
