* Fake A Call app helps customers in sticky situations
Faking a call on your mobile phone has replaced crossing the street, looking to the floor and making your excuses and leaving as the best way to escape an uncomfortable social situation. Over eight in ten (81%) Brits polled by Orange admit ‘phoning-a-fake’ on their mobile device to avoid embarrassment.
Singletons beware – one in 10 people (11%) have faked an ‘important call’ to get out of an awkward date, while almost a third (31%) would rather have a pretend conversation than be forced to catch up with an old friend on the street.
While many admit faking a call to avoid cringe-worthy situations, some Brits use their phone simply to show off, with one in ten (11%) fabricating a conversation to appear popular.
Top reasons to ‘phone-a-fake’
1. To appear busy when waiting for a friend (37%)
2. To avoid speaking to an old friend you bump into (31%)
3. To get out of a dull date (11%)
4. To look popular (11%)
5. To get out of a meeting at work (7%)
