FlexiPacket Microwave launched for North America and Japan

Saturday, March 27, 2010

At CTIA 2010 in Las Vegas, Nokia Siemens Networks, a leading supplier of mobile backhaul capability, is launching a new version of its award-winning FlexiPacket Microwave tailored to help North American and Japanese service providers handle the data surge caused by the growing use of smart devices.

FlexiPacket Microwave combines Carrier Ethernet transport with microwave radio technology in a unique, open approach, to replace existing proprietary mobile backhaul platforms. It uses standard gigabit Ethernet interfaces that allow it to connect directly with existing base stations – avoiding the need for additional shelters – in order to seamlessly provide a wireless extension of packet-based optical fiber networks. The version of the solution that Nokia Siemens Networks is now unveiling in Las Vegas is specifically designed to meet microwave backhaul requirements in North America and Japan.

“FlexiPacket Microwave is more than just Ethernet over microwave,” says Kevin Kelly, head of North American mobile backhaul sales, Nokia Siemens Networks. “It is a platform with a unique combination of features, such as high spectral efficiency, high Quality of Service, and support for legacy interfaces. FlexiPacket Microwave has been supplied to many of our customers worldwide as they have migrated to IP mobile backhaul, and we’re pleased to be able to now offer the same capability in North America and Japan.”

With the lowest possible latency and guaranteed throughput for delivering data-intensive applications over 3G, WiMax and LTE networks, FlexiPacket Microwave allows operators to offer a quality end-user service experience that can differentiate them from the competition. The network management system for FlexiPacket Microwave helps drive down operational expenditure: it eliminates the need to configure individual network nodes and allows connections between them to be set up in a point-and-click fashion. FlexiPacket Microwave can be managed directly via Nokia Siemens Networks’ NetAct network management portfolio, which provides operators with integrated radio and transport management capabilities.

At CTIA Wireless March 23-25, at Booth #2545 in Central Hall 4, Nokia Siemens Networks is demonstrating its full range of packet mobile backhaul technologies, including FlexiPacket Microwave and related Carrier Ethernet transport.
