According to the Orange virtual fan-base league, Leeds United are the seventh most subscribed for team* – and are the only League One side to appear in the top 25 list**. Furthermore, Leeds rake in almost six times as many subscribers as their nearest League One rivals Southampton – and the club has a stronger virtual fan-base than numerous Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Newcastle. Leeds United even have a higher virtual fan-base than national teams; Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
A strong run this season secured automatic promotion for Leeds to the Coca-Cola Championship – and dedicated followers used text alerts to keep up-to-date on their team’s goals, match line-ups, half-time and full-time scores.
The latest findings also reveal that goal subscriptions increased by 11% since last season, with an upsurge of 19% from Leeds United fans specifically – which shows that fans really got behind their team as Leeds United stormed into the Coca-Cola Championship.
Steve Wallage, Head of Sport Partnerships and Services for Orange UK, said: “Mobile alerts are a real barometer of fans’ passions and reflect their enthusiasm for receiving team updates while on the move. Every goal scored puts fans’ high hopes on the line and tension levels can quickly soar.”
Football fans can also check the latest football results by logging on to sports page on Orange World, the Orange mobile portal.
To subscribe to a football team’s alerts, new and existing customers simply need to text their team name and ‘goals on’ (for example ‘Leeds United goals on’) to 177. For further information, please visit www.orange.co.uk/sport/football.
