Nokia to restart PCB assembly outsourcing, says paper

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Nokia will resume outsourcing PCB assembly with its EMS partners after having suspended such contract manufacturing activities for five consecutive quarters, according to a Chinese Language Commercial Times report.

Foxconn, which historically received the bulk of PCB assembly orders from Nokia, should be one of the first to benefit, especially with the handset giant slated to unveil several entry-level devices in the second half of 2010, the report said. Other EMS companies that have worked with Nokia include Jabil Circuit, BYD and Elcoteq.

In 2008, before the outsourcing pullback, Nokia outsourced about 17% of its total handset manufacturing worth US$5 billion, according to the report.
