ROSEBURG, Ore. — Warm summer nights at Stewart Park will come alive in June with the return of a family-friendly series of movies sponsored by U.S. Cellular. Hundreds attended the inaugural U.S. Cellular Movies in the Park program in Roseburg last year, which provided the community with four weekends of free movies at Stewart Park. The success of last year’s program led U.S. Cellular to bring the event back in 2010 and extend the program to a six-week lineup, said Roberta Winger, Director of Sales for U.S. Cellular in Oregon and California in a press conference on Monday.
“This is a great opportunity for everyone in the city to connect and enjoy a little bit of Hollywood for free,” said Roseburg Parks and Recreation Chairman Michael Baker. “Following on the success of the Movies in the Park in Roseburg last year, we wanted to work with U.S. Cellular to bring the same excitement and family atmosphere back to the community.”
Movies start at dusk and various pre-show activities begin at 7:30 on the evenings of June 4, 11, 18 and 25, as well as July 2 and 9. The free movies are open to all ages and families are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs, along with food and drink (alcohol is not permitted) and enjoy a fun summer evening at the movies.
In addition to an extended program in 2010, there is another new component to this year’s series. For the final movie night, U.S. Cellular is letting the public choose which movie will be featured. Three movie choices will be presented to the public, and the one receiving the most votes will be shown on the big screen on July 9. More details will be announced in the coming weeks on voting for the grand finale.
Below is this summer’s movie lineup:
* Friday, June 4: “Where the Wild Things Are”
* Friday, June 11: “The Blind Side”
* Friday, June 18: “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”
* Friday, June 25: “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”
* Friday, July 2: “Kung Fu Panda”
* Friday, July 9: Leading vote recipient between “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Curious George” and “Ice Age” (2002).
“It is important to us as a company to support events that build relationships and bring friends and family together,” Winger said. “We’re looking forward to spending summer evenings together in Roseburg outdoors at a beautiful park, gathered in front of the big screen.”
