Taiwan market: Motorola aims for top-5 in smartphone market share

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Motorola will introduce five new Android-based smartphones in Taiwan in 2010 aiming for a top-five smartphone market share, according to the company. Currently the company ranks seventh in overall handset sales with a 2.2% share of the Taiwan market.

On May 11, Motorola and Taiwan-base carrier Chunghwa Telecom co-launched the Milestone XT701 smartphone, which features a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel digital camera and the Cortex-A8 processor, priced at NT$17,500 (US$552).

In related news, Motorola has made aggressive moves in China as well, introducing seven smartphones in the past six months with customization for China home-grown standards including CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting), WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) and TD-SCDMA , company co-CEO Sanjay Jha was cited by China media reports as saying.

Since PC penetration is relatively low in China, and with mobile devices improving in functionality, Motorola could see many users jumping directly into products such as smartphones, Jha was cited as saying in Beijing.

Motorola was the best-selling Android-based smartphone vendor in Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2010, according to the company.
