Orange announced the launch of their new and improved Orange GlastoNav application, a free mobile app, which enables festival-goers to plan which artists they want to see at Glastonbury and navigate around the festival using the indispensable GlastoNav map. For the first time ever, an Augmented Reality version of GlastoNav will also be available for the iPhone during the week of the festival.
The free mobile service is now in its third year and has evolved in response to feedback from last year’s users as well as Orange’s twitter followers. This feedback has led to two versions of the application being produced, the java app which will be available across a range of handsets and the Augmented Reality iPhone application.
The Augmented Reality iPhone application engages the camera function on your iPhone to create a visual guide to the entire festival. Information is layered over the picture shown from your viewfinder, helping users navigate around the 1100 acre site. Festival goers will also be able to see who is playing ‘now and next’ on each stage and view the full artist line up for the duration of the weekend from the Guardian Guide. Essential festival facilities such as toilets, information points, cash machines and bars will appear as pop-ups on the map with ‘distance from’ indicators. In addition to these existing locations users will also be able to add their tent location to the map to create a GPS tent locator, ensuring they can always find their tent at the end of the night. Finally, the iPhone version of GlastoNav will also feature a 2D map with zoom functionality.
The Java application has evolved to become even more user friendly for 2010 by concentrating on the map and Guardian Guide line up functionality. Compatible across a broader range of handsets, Orange GlastoNav will feature a fully interactive festival map with stage line ups, pop up indicators showing who is currently onstage, bar opening times and guides to cool places to visit, higher spec phone users will also be able to zoom into the map. For those looking to discover new music across the weekend the app will feature a ‘Q Recommends’ section featuring the top established and up and coming bands per day.
Andrew Pearcey, Head of Sponsorship at Orange UK said: “GlastoNav is the best way to find your way around the Glastonbury festival site and make sure you and your mates don’t miss a thing. The brand new, innovative Augmented Reality app will also ensure iPhone users can find out a range of information from where the nearest toilet is to where they pitched their tents. The java app has also evolved for 2010 to ensure improved functionality and ease of use”
Orange GlastoNav is available to download from today by texting the shortcode GLASTO to 65101 for the java application. The Augmented Reality iPhone version is available from the Apple App Store during the week of the festival.
For those looking to recharge their batteries on site, the Orange Chill ‘n’ Charge area will be returning for the duration of the festival with more charging points than ever, exciting new interactive elements and will also feature stripped back acoustic performances from established and up and coming artists.
