PT Indonesia Comnets Plus (ICON+) is expanding its backbone network to Sumatra to meet customer demand for bandwidth. Nokia Siemens Networks’ managed services business is implementing and managing the network built with its hiT 7300 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network platform. ICON+ is a subsidiary of National Electricity Company (PT PLN) and currently operates backbone networks, including mobile backhaul services, across the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali.
“We chose Nokia Siemens Networks technology for our backbone network across Sumatra to ensure that we have an optical network platform that can rapidly expand its bandwidth capacity over the long term,” said Muljo Adji AG, president director, ICON+. “In addition, we expect Nokia Siemens Networks’ managed services to save us money through increased operational efficiency. The collaboration will benefit our customers through greater backbone network capacity, better service quality and improved coverage.”

The DWDM platform is simple to upgrade and operate, helping to lower operating expenditures and minimize the cost of increasing network capacity reducing the “cost-per-bit”. Under the managed services contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide preventive and corrective maintenance for ICON+’s 3600 kilometers of fiber optic backbone across Sumatra. ICON+ will have the support of Nokia Siemens Networks’ field services team in Indonesia and its expertise in the maintenance of DWDM networks. The contract also involves end-to-services, including those offered by Nokia Siemens Networks’ remote Global Network Solutions Centers such as fault management, configuration management and performance management.
ICON+ has been focusing on providing telecommunications networks, services and content to support its parent company PT PLN and the public through key services such as leased-line, MPLS, broadband Internet access, Voice over Internet Protocol and banking applications. To meet the increase needs for highly available and reliable telecommunications networks, the company has also begun to commercialize fiber optic network in Java and Bali. It is currently serving over 296 customers in key industries such as telecommunications, banking, financial service and manufacturing.
The DWDM roll-out undertaken by Nokia Siemens Networks started in January 2010 and is expected to be completed in April 2010, covering most of Sumatra. ICON+ plans to continue its Sumatra expansion to cover as far as Aceh province by end of this year. The managed services contract with ICON+ is a new addition to Nokia Siemens Networks’ more than 230 managed services contracts in mobile and fixed networks across the world, serving more than 300 million subscribers globally.
