Expanding into mobile Internet services is a goal for the Chinese computer maker. It launched its "LePhone" handset in China on Monday, based on Google Inc.'s Android operating system, hoping to take a chunk of the world's largest market for mobile subscribers. The phone will subsequently be launched in other emerging markets.
Lenovo aims to sell "millions" of the phones over the next five years, and "tens of millions" after that, Chief Operating Officer Rory Read told reporters at the event.
Mr. Read said the company believes its phones will have a better brand position than Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry handset, which is iconic among businesspeople around the world but doesn't yet have a strong position in the China market.
Lenovo's phones will be targeted at both the enterprise and consumer markets, he added. The phones will run on all three of China's third-generation wireless standards, including the locally developed standard called TD-SCDMA, he said.
