CEO Dan Hesse Profiles Environmental Leadership and Growing Portfolio of Green Products at Earth Day Event Co-hosted by Rep. Markey

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) CEO Dan Hesse joined Rep. Edward Markey and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski on Capitol Hill for the Clean Tech EXPO, held by the Clean Economy Network and CTIA-The Wireless Association in honor of Earth Day. During the event, energy companies, non-profits and telecommunications organizations are showcasing advances in clean energy and environmentally friendly products and technology.

"Today's event is an example of how corporate and government stakeholders are innovating in ways that move our nation toward a greener economy," said Hesse. "Sprint is proud to join government, clean tech and green business leaders who are meeting the needs of consumers and the environment through improved manufacturing processes, greener product offerings, consumer-friendly recycling and reuse programs, and more."

As a leader in environmental responsibility and sustainability, Sprint continues to expand its portfolio of eco-friendly devices and services. During the event, Hesse revealed Sprint's latest "green" mobile device - Samsung Restore(TM).

Samsung Restore is a feature-rich messaging phone - and the first to launch with Sprint's new Eco-Logo, a green product marker that allows customers to identify Sprint's most environmentally friendly devices at a glance. Restore will be available for purchase later this summer via all of Sprint's retail channels.

Sprint's New Eco-Logo

The new Sprint Eco-Logo provides a visual indicator to customers that Sprint considers the product to be more environmentally responsible than typical devices in the following categories:

* Reduction of environmentally sensitive materials
* Energy management
* Lifecycle management
* Sustainable packaging
* Eco-friendly applications
* Innovation

The criteria are in line with industry green electronics requirements and recognize products that:

* Are safer for the environment.
* Reduce energy usage and carbon emissions.
* Decrease e-waste and the need for virgin materials.
* Significantly reduce waste sent to landfills, the use of natural resources, and the level of toxins involved in production and waste management.
* Come with built-in eco-applications and environmentally themed programs and ringers.
* Feature a breakthrough "green" attribute or capabilities.

Sprint's Expanding Environmentally-friendly Product Portfolio

Sprint now offers three eco-friendly devices for less than $50 (after mail-in rebate) - Samsung Restore, Samsung Reclaim(TM) and LG Remarq(TM). All three devices meet the criteria for Sprint's new Eco-Logo.

* LG Remarq is a chic messaging whiz with an outer casing made from 19 percent post-consumer recycled plastic and is 87 percent recyclable. This state-of-the-art device meets RoHS standards for restriction of hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Remarq will be available on May 9 for FREE with a new, two-year service agreement after a $50 mail-in rebate (taxes and surcharges excluded.)
* Samsung Reclaim, introduced in 2009, is designed with environmentally responsible components and fully recyclable packaging. Its bio-plastic material, made from corn, makes up 16 percent of the Reclaim's outer casing. Reclaim is available for FREE with a new, two-year service agreement after a $50 mail-in rebate (taxes and surcharges excluded.)

Advancing Sprint's Green Leadership

As its green product portfolio expands, Sprint continues to challenge the technology industry to create a greener, more sustainable future. At #15 on Newsweek's 2009 Green Rankings of America's 500 largest corporations, Sprint is the only U.S. telecom ranked within the top 100.

Sprint is the first U.S. wireless carrier to establish green design criteria for future devices and accessories, working with device and accessory suppliers to design and provide products that feature sustainable design elements and that contain a reduced level of potentially hazardous materials.

Earlier this year, Sprint also expanded its Buyback program to increase eCycling rates. The national program now offers an instant, point-of-sale account credit to current and new Sprint subscribers who turn in up to three eligible wireless devices, per active line of service each year. The program now accepts any wireless device, regardless of carrier. Sprint Project Connect continues to accept all wireless phones, batteries, accessories and data cards that do not qualify for the Buyback program, regardless of carrier or condition. Sprint Buyback and Sprint Project Connect have kept more than 19 million wireless phones out of landfills and have generated more than $6 million in charitable contributions since 2001.

In 2009, Sprint released an environmental policy to guide its U.S. operations, global practices and contractual relationships.

EcoFocus is an annual Pepcom demo event dedicated to showcasing the latest green technologies.
