iPad mania as thousands queue for UK launch Tweet

Hordes of Apple fans descended on the company's flagship London store on Friday for the launch of the iPad, touted as a revolution in personal computing.

Some fans had camped out overnight to get their hands on the new product, with about 40 enthusiasts already waiting outside the flagship Apple store in central London, at 3am (0200 GMT).

Most of them were sitting on deck chairs and some were wrapped in sleeping bags and blankets.

Staff escorted the first group of customers one by one up to buy their iPad after they opened the doors at 8am, whooping, chanting and cheering.

"I queued overnight for about 20 hours since midday yesterday but it was very, very worth it," Jake Lee, a 17-year-old student from Essex, told AFP, clutching his treasured iPad.

Actor, comedian and Twitter enthusiast Stephen Fry was among the first into the Regent Street store in central London. He said: "Just to see this is fantastic. It is a phenomenal event. There's never been anything like it."

Similar queues of gadget lovers could be seen snaked outside Apple shops in Australia, Japan and five other European countries, for the global product launch.

The rollout of the iPad -- a flat, 10-inch (25-centimetre) black tablet -- was pushed back by a month due to huge demand in the United States.

One million iPads were sold in 28 days after the product's US debut in early April, forcing the firm to delay its foreign launch.

The multi-functional device is tipped by some pundits to revitalise media and publishing, with many major newspapers and broadcasters launching applications.

Newspaper mogul Rupert Murdoch has said the iPad has the potential to save the newspaper industry.

Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky estimated that Apple is selling more than 200,000 iPads a week -- more than estimated Mac computer sales of 110,000 a week, and vying with iPhone 3GS sales of 246,000 a week.

California-based Apple has declined to reveal the number of pre-orders received for the iPad internationally, but Abramsky put it at around 600,000.

While scenes of iPad-mania have been broadcast around the globe, the launch has been tainted by reports of 11 suspected employee suicides at the Chinese factory which makes the iPad.

Apple said it would independently investigate the deaths at Foxconn, which also supplies electronic products for Dell and Hewlett-Packard. It said in a statement: "We are saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn. Apple is deeply committed to ensuring that conditions throughout our supply chain are safe and workers are treated with respect and dignity."

The iPad also went on sale on Wednesday in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland and launches will follow in July in Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, as well as Hong Kong, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore.

Sony Ericsson revs up for 2010 Tweet

Sony Ericsson had some well publicised quality issues in 2009, but the manufacturer believes 2010 will be a very different year.

Mobile: What is Sony Ericsson's key focus for 2010?
Vautier: The focus for the UK in 2010 is to deliver on the brand promise of the Communication and Entertainment range, which we started with the Satio and Aino last year. It's about delivering a very narrow, focused portfolio. It is not about certain volume or market share targets. We need to make sure we are relevant in the market, but it's really about getting more traction in the higher value segments in the UK.

What are you doing to drive sales in that higher value segment?
We've got two key launches early in the year, the X10 and Vivaz, which is a nice position to be in. Both of these devices are about bringing together communication and entertainment and the fusion of that. The key signature apps are Timescape and Mediascape. They drive our differentiation and help us provide a better user experience on our products - you will also see that look and feel across a broader range of Sony products.

What is your marketing strategy?
Obviously our competitors will not be sitting still - they will be marketing aggressively. We will be investing almost 20% more year on year in the UK. We believe it is very important that we talk to and reaffirm our position in the market, as we are going after this higher value segment. We want as broad a distribution as possible.

How many devices will you be releasing this year?
The total number of products, including last year's, will be 26. Clearly this is a huge reduction. There are the key five (see below), which will all be out by the end of Q2. Then there will be a number of Walkman products. Some of these will be better suited to prepay, so we will still have relevance in that segment from the middle of 2010 onwards; they will be around the £100 mark. So it's focused - 14 to 16 key new devices this year.

What's Sony Ericsson's policy on operating systems?
One of the key things is that we are a very open company - so we work with the operating systems that provide the best user experience. Android plays a very big role in that, as does Symbian Foundation and Microsoft. Underneath all of this we have our OSE platform.

How sustainable is it to support that many operating systems?
We need to focus our resources on the platforms we believe will provide the best level of business. Some platforms are growing, like Android, and others like Symbian still have huge market share, so that is why we are going to market with that for Vivaz and Vivaz Pro.

There have been questions over the commitment from the parent companies, what's the situation there?
We have had, and continue to have, strong support from our parent companies. In Q4 of 2009, we had a £600m net cash position, which was healthy. Clearly the parents want us to get back into profitability as soon as we can, but they are utterly committed to us.

You've had some well-publicised quality issues, what are you doing to improve that?
Yes, we've had quality issues. They have been due to bigger challenges within the organisation. We've done an enormous amount of work over the last 18 months in restructuring how we develop, how we do R&D, how we source components, what we source and what we test to make sure we get to a certain level before we even get to a project.

How have you changed that process?
We have totally changed the structure and KPIs of the organisation, so it is always around delivering quality. Now the structure is focused on every key element of the device.

We have drastically reduced the number of components we use, which means we can test more efficiently. The key thing is, you can still have huge innovation in your portfolio even though you are using fewer components.

The quality issues have damaged Sony Ericsson's reputation. How are you going to repair that?
We need to prove to our customers that we can bring quality products to the market as we used to. We are, of course, still working with our customers and channels to help our end customers deal with any on-going issues they have.

Is the Sony Ericsson brand strong enough to take back share in the UK this year?
Last year we had challenges, but we achieved some very strong cut through with the launch of Communication and Entertainment. We feel we are in a very good position to maximise the potential from the brand. 2010 will be a fundamentally different year for us.

Brazil' s NET Expands Its Broadband Metro Network Using Huawei' s IPTime Broadband Metro Solution Tweet

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, announced that it was selected by NET, the largest cable TV operator and the second largest broadband service provider in Brazil, to deploy its IPTime broadband metro solution as part of an initiative to expand and restructure NET' s IP metro network. This initiative will provide subscribers with high-quality, high-definition (HD) video service throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

As a result of a 30% increase in subscribers since 2009, NET faces challenges such as aging equipment, soaring OPEX, little support for new bandwidth heavy HD and 3D video services, and exhaustion of IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) address resources. Nokia Siemens Networks supports landmark TD-LTE video call Tweet

Collaborates with industry partners to conduct live TD-LTE demo between Shanghai and Taipei.

Nokia Siemens Networks recently facilitated a high resolution live video call between TD-LTE devices connected to separate TD-LTE networks. The call occurred between China Mobile’s pre-commercial TD-LTE network for the Shanghai World Expo and National Chiao Tung University’s (NCTU) TD-LTE trial network in Taipei, set up by Nokia Siemens Networks.

“This is a landmark achievement,” said Chung-Yu Wu, the president of NCTU. “It is a showcase for collaboration between the telecommunications industries of mainland China and Taiwan. Trials such as these go a long way in furthering TD-LTE interests in the region – and what better platform to show it off than Shanghai Expo!”

Nokia Siemens Networks recently built NCTU’s TD-LTE trial network supporting the university’s research program in Taipei. The company provided all the necessary TD-LTE equipment including core network and multiple base stations, along with the corresponding services. Nokia Siemens Networks is also providing TD-LTE indoor coverage for the Finland Pavilion during the World Expo in Shanghai.

Carbon neutral energy services to be developed in the Kalasatama district of Helsinki.

Helsingin Energia - a public utility of the City of Helsinki, ABB - the leading power and automation technology group and Nokia Siemens Networks will jointly develop, test and install a smart grid in the new Kalasatama district of Helsinki. The project will create sustainable, high efficiency electric power distribution and services based on modern communication, information and energy technologies.

The companies will develop a variety of solutions: to ensure excess power generated from renewable energy sources in the district - including sources such as solar panels or wind turbines - can be fed into the market; to enable electric vehicles to draw electricity from the grid or feed it back in; to store energy; to create easy-to-use services and to provide more flexibility and transparency in the distribution grid, all helping to lower electricity consumption and emissions.

The project is part of a larger initiative of the City of Helsinki to reduce its environmental footprint with a focus on sustainable and efficient generation, transmission and distribution of power.

“We have the ambition to develop the new Kalasatama district into a global benchmark for smart cities and we look forward to implementing the best available technology together with our global partners”, said Seppo Ruohonen, CEO of Helsingin Energia.

“In terms of scale, this is another big step forward in the development of a smarter and more flexible urban grid that can integrate distributed and renewable energy sources and help people to realize the vision of sustainable urban living,” said Bazmi Husain, head of ABB’s smart grids initiative.

The companies signed the Memorandum of Understanding on technology cooperation to develop, test and implement smart energy solutions in Kalasatama in May.

The Kalasatama district in the heart of Helsinki will provide living space for 18,000 people and 10,000 work places by 2030. Housing construction work will start later this year.

IC distributor Coasia secures NT$1 billion syndicated loan Tweet

Coasia Microelectronics has signed a NT$1 billion (US$31 million) syndicated loan with banks to fund operations, according to the company. The IC distributor said sales of its distributed products including CMOS image sensors, multi-chip package (MCP) memory and OLED displays have grown since the fourth quarter of 2009.

Coasia reported revenues of NT$1.72 billion for April 2010, a record high. Accumulated revenues from January to April amounted to NT$5.16 billion, compared to NT$2.03 billion during the same period of 2009.

Market watchers expect Coasia's second-quarter revenues to hit a quarterly high, buoyed by its strong shipments of electronics components used in smartphones.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times cited analysts saying Coasia's sales have recently been boosted by growing demand from HTC. Coasia reportedly has cut into the supply chain of the smartphone vendor by supplying Samsung products.

GLOBAL - We’ve got a mixture of apps from the selection over at OviDailyApp this week. But before we jump into our pick of the apps, OviDailyApp has launched its own handy tool this week in the form of tutorials. Created to help you find the best content on Ovi Store, these tutorials will highlight the features and functionality of mobile apps, and give you an easy way to make an informed decision about an application before splashing the cash and downloading. It’s a great tool, though they’re currently only available for the Nokia N97 Mini. There are plans to roll the tutorials out to other devices in the future.

Now to the apps. This week we have a game that will go down swimmingly, and an app for musical maestros and a handy tool that will save you hours of futile searching for your phone behind the sofa. Join us after the jump for more.

First-up: Fishfarm. This game does exactly what the name suggests and lets you create your own aquatic habitat on your handset. Creating an aquatic wonderland is one thing; keeping it alive is quite another. Think of Fishfarm as a mobile version of Tamagotchi: you create the aquarium and then you have to keep it going. The better caretaker you are, the more points you earn and this in turn lets you unlock additional fish and plants. If you don’t look after your fishy friends, you’ll be left with what resembles a rockpool rather than a full-blown aquarium. Fishfarm is available in Ovi Store for free.

Next-up we have Spitfire. Remember the days when you used to play the drums with a saucepan and a wooden spoon? All that practice may not have been for nothing. Spitfire allows you to record virtually anything and transform it into a musical beat. The app puts a four-track, loop-based audio recording and mixing setup in the palm of your hand. For those less musically minded, it basically means that you can use it to record your own short sequences of beats, notes or chords strummed on a guitar (or any other ‘instrument’) – and layer these loops on top of each other to produce your musical masterpiece.

It uses your Nokia phone’s built-in microphone, or the one in the headphone cable, to record the sounds around you, be it nature, musical instruments, or snippets of recordings coming from a loudspeaker. The app also includes a small library of its own pre-recorded rhythm, bass, and melody tracks. All of these are available for mixing and matching as you like. The folks behind the app, Lionear Ltd, have put their musical talents to the test and transformed a ruler, a can and a sheet of paper into musical instruments. Finally, we have Phonelocator Periodic. We’ve all done it: lost our phone, tried to call it and the darn thing is on silent. There’s nothing more frustrating that searching every corner for your prized handset. However, those days may soon be over thanks to Phonelocator Periodic from the developer Phonelocator. The app periodically reports the location of your Nokia S60 device via SMS to a website, allows you to trigger a location update via SMS, and will even try to send a text message to a friend if someone changes the SIM card in your Nokia. Review of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 GSM/UMTS smartphone Tweet

Mobile-review have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. Here are the phones specifications, some videos and their final impression.

We have already discussed the phone functions. Now we’ll mention the speakers. This smartphone features one speaker at the top of left side. Its maximum volume is slightly lower than in HTC Desire or Google Nexus One. If you don’t hear the calls well you can solve this issue by selecting a clear and merry melody resembling “classic phone ringtone”. Vibration in SE X10 is weak with frequent and flat pulses. When the smartphone is in the jeans pocket you will almost never feel it. It is noticeable when you hold the device in the hand or it is resting on the table.

To sum it up I have to say that on the balance Sony Ericsson X10 has good hardware (apart from the phone functions) and mediocre software with numerous bugs of different severity. Here go an old Android version (everybody who hasn’t tried versions 2.1 or 2.2 will tell you they are the same) odd TimeScape interface, several features of the phonebook, inability to handle USSD requests and other “details”. Add the bluish display, end call button, which is also responsible for switching the screen on and off, two funny LEDs between the keys and other idiosyncrasies and we’ll have a picture of X10.

If you ignore the quality of sound during the conversation, low volume of the speaker and imagine that SE X10 runs on Android 2.1 or even has Sense you’ll have a nice device you can forgive untidy icons, big size and other drawbacks. But these are fantasies as in real life we have the smartphone with good characteristics and many minor faults, which shape its face.

Modern flagship Android models from HTC and Samsung have one disadvantage – short operation time. Apart from this we have almost “ideal” devices. Separate samples may have defects and bugs, but this is an exception. In case of Sony Ericsson X10 we don’t have one sample with bugs, but the model every sample of which has a range of the problems we discussed. If you know how to fix them, or will be ready to tolerate then I am not against. Good smartphone on slightly outdated Android version is waiting for you. But if you buy Android to use it as a phone and don’t want to fine tune what comes from the box, think of other models.

Frankly speaking I have genuine pity for this model. X10 has a potential and it really had to become a strong flagship model on Android. Before the arrival of Samsung Galaxy S X10 could reign as the perfect “machine” with impeccable characteristics, but due to some people in the company it hasn’t happened and we have an expensive smartphone with various problems and bugs.

More secure searches
Years ago we added Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to products ranging from Gmail to Google Docs, as part of our effort to advance the safety and security of our products for you. Now you have a new choice to search more securely using https://www.google.com. When you use this https address, an encrypted session is established between your browser and Google that uses an SSL connection. Just like on an online banking page, the "https" confirms that you are using a more secure connection that will help protect your search terms and your search results from being intercepted by a third party. For more information on this security enhancement, read our announcement.

Whether you're planning a trip by train or scouring the real-time web, this week's roundup also includes two search enhancements that should greatly improve the richness of yor search results -- no matter what you're looking for.

Images in real-time search updates
Ten blue links on a search results page can provide you with a lot of really helpful information, but sometimes you're searching for content that is richer than a textual web page. For instance, what are people saying about Lady Gaga's latest garb? Until now, it's been hard to get this kind of rich visual detail that's really fresh. So this week we began rolling out a feature for images in real-time search. When searching for the latest content across the real-time web, you'll be able to quickly see the images people are talking about right now (based on URLs of those images in their public updates.) To view this new feature, click on "Updates" in the lefthand panel when you complete a search. Then click on "Updates with images."

Transit search enhanced
Often when we search, it's to get from point A to point B, such as when the best route is by train. Then it's important to know the specific details of the train station near you, like which lines it serves. Now you can easily get this information in the lefthand panel on Google Maps by searching for the transit station. The lines are colored and grouped by transit type to make it easier to find the line you're looking for. For rail trains, you can see the departure time directly. For other types of transit like subways, buses and commuter trains, you can click on the line name to get the next departure time of each direction—all without having to leave the current page.

Skype’s new iPhone application introduces 3G calling functionality Tweet

LUXEMBOURG – Skype announced the launch of the new version of its iPhone application. Available to download from the Apple App Store today, this update allows iPhone users to make and receive Skype-to-Skype calls, and to call mobiles and landlines around the world at very low rates for the first time over their 3G data connection.

Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G will be free for a trial period which will run until the end of 2010*. Details of pricing will be announced in the coming months and will be in line with Skype's commitment to providing customers with great value. Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi will still remain free.

“Using Skype on 3G has been the number one request among our iPhone customers. This new version is a great step towards enabling our customers to take and use Skype everywhere they go”, said Russ Shaw General Manager for Mobile, Skype. “Using Skype on iPhone without being restricted to the availability of a WiFi network will open up new ways for Skype customers to stay connected and make free or low-cost calls whenever they want, wherever they are in the world.”

“We have a group of young tennis players that are constantly travelling inside Spain and around the world. One of them is my daughter, she travels a lot and we use Skype to communicate because it’s easier, faster and cheaper. The change of having Skype on the mobile phone has been crucial for us. Before we had to look for a computer in the tennis clubs and hotels and it was a real problem because it was very difficult to find one,” said Alexei Starkov, the physical/fitness coach of the Federación de Tenis de Madrid. “Tennis is an individual sport and when you travel by yourself at times you feel very lonely. Now with Skype for iPhone also allowing for calls over 3G you can call anytime and anywhere without having to find a WiFi spot.”

Additional new features of the Skype for iPhone application include:

* Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio on iPhone 3GS or 2nd generation iPod touch and onwards.
* Enhanced call quality indicator, which will help customers choose the best moment to call.
* Improved start-up time
* Rapid access to the dial pad from the home screen

The new version is compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch and iPad. Skype requires iPhone OS version 3.0 and above.

Calling functionality is available on iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch onwards. iPod touch requires a compatible headset with a microphone.

Group of scientists of the United States performed with the innovation that is surprising the world because they are planning to create artificial humans. Some people question the motivation of scientists to create artificial humans. One group supports the name of knowledge, and they can not wait to see results. While some researchers call this plan as "one of the most advanced project in the history of knowledge".

It's only a handful of views and responses. Of course there are still some people or groups who choose a pro or con with certain considerations. When people react to and debate, a group of scientists led molecular biologist Craig Venter just kept going, and they remain in the original plan. Craig Venter and his team introduced the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) latest. Tues regarded as a copy of this DNA to create artificial humans.

Quite difficult to explain the type and function of this DNA, and DNA will be incorporated into the nucleus of living cells that contain microorganisms semi-synthesis. Craig has not been able to describe in detail about the outcome of its latest projects. For the time being, all humans can only fantasize about this imitation. Some scientists suppose could about the human clone. "Like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park or Frankenstein," said an expert in molecular biology from Vanderbilt University in which Dr. Anthony Forster.

"Genomic synthesis," as Anthony calls the project undertaken by a team of Craig Venter. He was proud that Craig's team can create a copy of which is owned chemical on the human genome. "This project is one proof of the resurrection of knowledge innovation," said Anthony Forster. Ready humans with innovations like this? Each person is entitled to cast their respective answers. Certainly, U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered the commission of biotechnology to browse this synthesis project.

They were asked to report results at least six months. Obama wants to ensure this project is good for the advancement of science. However, what is being done team Craig is a great project, and it involves real human existence. The next question is it necessary supervision of Craig Vanter teamwork? Necessarily need even a little late. As stated by Executive Director Pat Mooney ETC, "There is no single oversight since the project began."
