Why Nexus One Will Make Money for Google

Google, it seems, is having some teething problems with its foray into the topsy-turvy world of mobile handsets. From unhappy partners to unhappy customers, the search giant has been having a rough time with its Nexus One, currently the best Android phone on the market. So much so that GigaOM Pro Mobile curator Colin Gibbs wondered if it was time for Google to kill Nexus One. (Related from GigaOM Pro, sub. required: Google’s Mobile Strategy: Understanding the Nexus One.)

On the opposite end of the argument are analysts from Citigroup, who think that the device could be a monster hit and sell somewhere between 1 and 3 million units. It would become a massive revenue generator, Citigroup analysts including Internet Mark Mahaney predict. In a research note this morning, he writes:

Based on its first week sales traction, our review of comparable 1st-year SmartPhone unit sales, and input from CIRA Wireless Handset Analyst Jim Suva, we estimate Nexus One could potentially see between 1MM and 3MM unit sales in 2010, generating between $500MM and $1.6B in incremental revenue (3% to 8% accretive). For additional context, we note from Kevin Chang, the CIRA Analyst who covers HTC Corporation, that HTC has build plans for 700,000 Nexus One units in Q1:10 and approximately 1.2MM for H1:10. This would seem to suggest a reasonable Year 1 range of 1MM to 3MM…..based in part on Chang’s analysis, we believe the Nexus One may generate a 10%- 15% operating margin, which implies that 1MM to 3MM Nexus One unit sales could generate between $0.12 and $0.55 in incremental ’10 EPS (0%-2% accretive). Finally, we note that given the relatively low Nexus One margin structure, every 1MM units sold would reduce GOOG’s overall operating margin by 1%. And fourth, there is the obvious opportunity for Google to generate a sizeable new revenue stream in terms of handset sales. We offer our estimates later, but as quick comps, we note that the Motorola Droid is expected to sell almost 8MM units in its first year and that both of the iPhone 3G versions sold or are on track to sell well over 10MM units in their respective first years. Hypothetically, 10MM units of a $529 phone would generate $5.3B, which would be very significant for a company that generated approximately $17.4B in net revenue in 2009. Of course, the incremental operating profit would be much less significant, given the relatively much lower margins of handset sales vs. Google’s core business.

I find these estimates to be way too optimistic. The smartphone market continues to be very dynamic and fluid. The analysis also assumes that Apple and RIM are going to stand still. Other members of the Android ecosystem are going to do their best to keep Google at bay.

Now I’m not one to argue against Google’s capabilities, but we need to temper our enthusiasm around the Nexus One. Also we have to remember the reality: 20,000 Nexus One handsets were sold during the first week it was available, while Andy Rubin, head of Google’s mobile efforts, said he would be happy if Google sold around 150,000 of them.

Rogers Magic “taken off the shelf” due to 911 software fix

A few days ago Rogers sent a message to HTC Dream owners requesting them to disable the GPS as an urgent software fix was needed for 911 calls to be completed. In fact – the Dream was taken off the shelf until the fix is updated.

News tonight comes for all the HTC Magic owners out there as the same issue is happening on their device. Here is the text message owners are getting. We are waiting for official word from Rogers to see if the Magic is also being pulled from their inventory… as it stands right now it’s not listed on their website for sale. It will be interesting to see how this will effect the recent decision for Dream owners to upgrade to a Magic.

“Rogers/Fido service message: URGENT 911 Calls: Please disable GPS location on your HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete. HTC is urgently working on a software upgrade and we will provide details shortly so you can re-enable GPS. Instructions: Select Menu – Select Location – Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite”

Update #1: Rogers has now issued a statement regarding the issue:
“We are in the process of contacting all of our Magic customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their Rogers HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete.

The same issue was identified on the Rogers HTC Dream, as communicated on January 15. At the time, our testing indicated that the Rogers HTC Magic was not impacted. However, through continued precautionary testing of the devices, we discovered the issue is replicated intermittently on the Magic device as well. HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Rogers HTC Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers. Our priority continues to be customer safety. As with the Dream, we are contacting via text all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade”

UPDATE #2 – For all the Dream owners looking to upgrade their device … we’ve been informed by Rogers that the recent “Dream to Magic upgrade program is temporarily on hold”. No other details of when/if the promo will be offered up again… probably when the software fix has been completed or when OS 2.1 is out.

Schools in a Race for Votes as Calling All Communities Campaign Approaches Final Days

CHICAGO – U.S. Cellular officials say voting surges in its Calling All Communities campaign are making the final results even harder to predict. As the contest enters its final week, schools across the nation are racing for votes to win a share of $1 million. Partnerships between schools and their communities are producing record-breaking voter participation. More than 170,000 votes have been cast for 6,000-plus schools.

Earlier this week, 12,000 votes were cast in a single day, shattering the previous record of 10,000 the day before. Some schools have earned more than 1,000 votes in just one week. Others soared into the Top 20 and even the Top 10 for the first time, setting the stage for potential upsets among long-time frontrunners.

"Schools are putting in extraordinary efforts to get votes in these last days," said Jeff Childs, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for U.S. Cellular. "Across our markets, schools are doing parades, pep rallies and all kinds of creative activities to earn a spot at the top."

All of the excitement is drawing national media attention. Last week, a segment on the campaign aired on CNN en Espanol reaching close to 23 million viewers. One lucky school will be featured on the popular morning show "The Balancing Act," airing on Lifetime TV. The show will be onsite with their cameras to capture the celebration as students and teachers learn that their hard work paid off.

"We can’t wait to hit the road in February and meet the 10 schools that will rise above thousands of others to win," said Childs. "The last-minute flood of votes shows that schools are pouring their hearts and souls into this campaign to keep the momentum going until the end."

Voting ends January 15, 2010. The 10 schools with the most votes will win $100,000 each to use however they choose. Winners will be announced in February when the 2010 Calling All Communities champions are revealed.

Anyone 18 or older can visit any U.S. Cellular store to pick up a voting code to use online. Only one vote is counted per person and each code is valid once. Schools of all sizes, public, private, urban and rural, K- 12 are eligible. No purchase is necessary to vote. See official rules at uscellular.com/callingallcommunities.

SCHOOL SPIRIT BREAKS RECORDS AS U.S. CELLULAR’S CALLING ALL COMMUNITIES NEARS END

More than 250,000 votes cast for 6,400-plus schools.

CHICAGO – With a record quarter of a million votes cast, some schools are less than 100 votes away from jumping in to the winners circle. That’s how close U.S. Cellular officials say their Calling All Communities race has become.

Voting spikes over the past few weeks propelled four new schools into the Top 10. A flood of school spirit continues to shatter voting records in the final days of the campaign. Vote totals topped 250,000 this week, more than double the 120,000 cast last year.

"We knew schools would make a final push for votes this week, but this is incredible," said Karen Ehlers, vice president of public affairs and communications for U.S. Cellular. "Some communities’ creativity adds hundreds of votes each day."

The influx of community support also led to the largest one-day voting total ever, with nearly 27,000 cast in a 24-hour period. Ten schools with the most votes when the campaign ends at 11:59 p.m. central time this Friday will share $1 million.

"The unprecedented voter participation leaves no doubt that our communities care about schools," said Jeff Childs, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for U.S. Cellular. "We can’t wait to see who wins."

Schools will find out if all of their hard work paid off when the champions are revealed in February. One lucky school’s celebration will be featured on the popular morning show "The Balancing Act," airing on Lifetime TV. Their camera crew will be onsite to capture the winning school’s excitement.
