World's First AMOLED With Touch Functions

On January 31, 2010, it was announced that Samsung Mobile Display will begin mass producing the world's first touch function AMOLED panel starting in March. This product is known as Samsung's 3.3 inch WVGA (480X800) resolution AMOLED.

Its characteristics include a touch screen component and a simple manufacturing process. Until now, touch screen products were made by separately connecting the display and the touch panel. However, Samsung placed a touch sensor (on-cell) over the mirror display and made it evaporate. The touch sensor's thickness is 0.001 mm, which allows the screen to provide clear, high-quality images. This marks the first time that a touch sensor was placed over an AMOLED substrate.

A company representative stated, "Through mass production, we want to make this touch embedded AMOLED panel number one in the LCD and AMOLED market. Also, we want to mass produce touch screens and construct a system so that we can expand the display market."

Microsoft Zune Phone Imminent at MWC

References to the much speculated Zune Phone were found in the Zune software update recently. Now, MuyComputer blog's editorial director Javier Perez Cortijo has confidently confirmed with Gizmodo that Microsoft will share details about Zune phones at the Mobile World Congress 2010 later this month. From the scanty details which are available, we know that the phone isn't a "Zune" phone but a Windows Mobile 7 running handset with Zune capabilities.

Zune phone rumors have been buzzing the web ever since Zune HD came out last year. Also, images of the Microsoft Zune phone, dubbed as Project Pink, leaked out over the web - honestly, we still don't believe those images are real. Two models, codenamed Turtle and Pure, are speculated to be the much-talked-about Zune phones. Cortijo stated that "the Zune phone presentation at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress 2010 is 100 percent confirmed".

The noteworthy part about these Zune phones is that they would be running Windows Mobile 7 operating system. So primarily, those may be first Windows Mobile 7 devices with full blown Zune compatibility. Last year in October, Jose Pinoro, director of communications for Microsoft's TV, Video and Music business, had confirmed, "Zune's next step would be to target mobile phones."

What really would be worth checking is whether Microsoft will keep Zune integration in Windows Mobile only exclusive to Windows Mobile 7 or pass it on to all other Windows Mobile smartphones.

EXCLUSIVE Breaking News : Windows Phone 7 Details Emerge From The Depths

With the Mobile World Congress event making its way around the corner, we can all be for certain that it is inevitable for Windows Phone 7 to make its long awaited debut. That being said, there have been rumours floating about on what Windows Phone 7 might actually be? For months, almost a year we have seen images being leaked all over the interwebs and although we can all admit we were quite excited, the chances of it looking so or even being real for that matter were highly unlikely. Wait no more! PPCGeeks has some truly amazing information on what the Windows Phone 7 platform will deliver to our beloved handheld devices. All information detailed within may not be entirely official, although it is definitely the closest information we have heard on actually being real. Without wasting anymore time, lets jump into the nitty gritty.

-At the Mobile World Congress event on February 15th, 2010, Windows Phone 7 will be unveilved, although at this time plans are only to unveil the user interface of the new platform . Specific indepth functionality of the device will most likely not be shown.

-The User Interface is based upon codename “METRO”. It will be very similar to the Zune HD User Interface with a complete revamp of the “Start” screen. The UI is “Very Clean”, “Soulful” and “Alive”
-Unfortunately there will be no Flash support at the get go as there was not enough time to implement these features.
-Windows Phone 7 will only support application installation through service based delivery. (i.e Marketplace). Application installation via storage card will not be possible.
- No Multi-Task support. Applications will “Pause” when in the background, however will support notifications via push notifications.
-Marketplace will now support “try before you buy” as well as an API
-No NETCF backwards compatibility. This means the original rumor of no backward compatibility for applications holds to be true. That being said, there are high hopes of porting the NetCF to the newer platform easily.
-Microsoft is confident that devices will be ready by September 2010
-Full Zune Integration
-Windows Mobile Device Center will no longer be used. Zune software to take over syncing via PC.
-OEM Interfaces will not be allowed to run on the device. Say goodbye to Sense UI / SPB Mobile Shell / Point UI / Infinity, etc, etc
-Full XBOX Gaming Integration (Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc)
-Full support for social networking

There is a plethora of details to go through, although listed above are the biggest impact points of Windows Phone 7. Throughout the day we will be emerging more information as we delve deep into the depths of what might possibly be Windows Phone 7.

This is a lot of information to consume in one shot and there could very well be the possibility of it being once again another rumor, although one thing stands true. This is the most detailed promising information we’ve seen to date in a while. We will continue to update you as we find out more information.

Amazon Unbox Puts Movies on Windows Phone.

With the power of mobile phones more and more people want to watch movies on them. The problem is, a lot of people don’t know where to begin. There are a few different routes you can take to get a movie on your phone. The main two are to buy them from various vendors or you can create them. It is pretty easy to buy them and add them to your phone using Amazon Unbox so let me help you with this one first. I will create another article on how to create them from your library.

What is Unbox?

Amazon has a video on demand service called Unbox. This service allows you to browse Amazon’s library and either rent or purchase a movie. You have a few options available to watch your movie. You can

Watch it online

You can log into your Amazon account and then select your purchased movie. A player loads in the browser. This is similar to watching any YouTube video except you own or rent it.

Download to your PC

Once you install the Amazon Unbox software on your pc you can manage purchase, and watch your videos

Purchase a device that can use the Unbox service.

There are various devices that can be purchased that can link into the Amazon Unbox service. Probably the two most popular ones are the Roku HD Player and a TiVo Video Recorder.

Download to a supported portable device. (the reason why your here!)

In addition to downloading the full movie file, you can also get a portable copy for your device. The list of portable devices is not extensive on the Amazon website but pretty much any Windows Mobile Phone should work ( I have not tested this ). The device just needs to support the Microsoft Play for Sure feature. The easy way to check and see if your device is supported is to connect it to your PC. While in the Unbox software you should be able to see it under “devices” with a drop down for available storage on the device.

Whichever option you choose you will enjoy your movie.
Adding your movie to your Windows Phone.

Once you purchase your movie from Amazon and download it, you can then transfer the portable copy to your phone. There are two ways to get the portable copy of the movie.

You can setup the Amazon Unbox Player to automatically download the portable file by going into Settings | Preferences and choose the option “Also download portable video files when downloading videos”.

The other option is to right click on the video and select “Download portable file to this PC”.

Whichever option you take the full movie file MUST be downloaded before you can get the portable file.

Now that you have the portable file, click “devices” in the tool bar at the top of the Unbox player on your PC. Your downloaded portable files will be visible in the middle of the player (1), and your device on the right (2).

Now just hit the big “Transfer” button.

Once the transfer is complete locate the file on your phone with your media player (on my device there was an Amazon folder created under the default “Videos” folder on my storage card )
Play it and enjoy your movie!

Sony Interested in Challenging Apple's IPad

Sony hinted on Thursday that it's preparing a challenger to Apple's upcoming iPad.

"That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a product," said Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's CFO, who was speaking at a Tokyo news conference held to announce the company's quarterly financial results.

Oneda didn't provide any details of any planned products but did say Sony is eyeing a similar market to the upcoming Apple gadget.

"Time-wise we are a little behind the iPad but it's a space we would like to be an active player in," said Oneda.

Sony said in October that it plans to launch a number of new mobile products that are built around network-based services.

The devices will connect into Sony's new online service, an Internet-based store that will bring music, movies, games and electronic books to a range of Sony products including Bravia TVs, Vaio PCs, Walkman music players and Reader e-book readers.

The launch of the iPad, due in March, isn't expected to impact the e-book reader market, which Oneda said is growing "exponentially."

"The [Sony Reader] Daily Edition with 3G network connectivity has received great acclaim and we plan to expand sales going forward," he said.

EatMemoryh

Notes:
* This application is designed to test the limits of your device's memory. In particular, to test if the HD2's additional 128MB is actually usable or not.
* This application will attempt to allocate as much memory as it can, OS limits notwithstanding. The application allocates memory in the OS's shared memory space, which means that it isn't privy to the usual 32MB address space limit.
* Because the application isn't limited to 32MB memory usage, you don't need to run multiple instances to consume your memory. Just one instance will do.
* This application does not use .NET, and instead uses the direct low-level kernel memory management functions (VirtualAlloc and VirtualFree) to reserve, commit, and free virtual pages. This means that the application has much more precise control over memory, and can consume memory until only a couple of megabytes remain.
* This application verifies the memory it allocates, by writing a byte pattern to the memory, and reading it out again. This is necessary because the Windows CE kernel does not commit pages to physical memory unless the memory page is read/written from at least once. This also guarantees that the memory is, in fact, usable and valid.
