Tagwhat Unveils Augmented Reality AS A NEW PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE

Friday, May 7, 2010

Launches AR network powered by location and social engagement; lets people explore the world and communicate with friends in an entirely new dimension.

Boulder, Colorado – Tagwhat publicly launches a new augmented reality (AR) experience that fuses the very best of mobile, augmented reality, and location-based social networking services for everyday use and appeal. Tagwhat's free community application aims to place users right inside their own personalized global canvas where they can discover, explore and share what matters with friends and followers.

Tagwhat users place digital tags anywhere on the Earth, from their street corner to another continent. By simply holding up the camera view of a mobile device (iPhone or Android), geo-contextual tags from pre-selected friends and community members become visible. Walk down the street and Tagwhat reveals a wealth of relevant information, discussions, and deals — such as a coupon for a nearby establishment, a discussion thread for a meet-up with friends, and a restaurant review about a sushi place around the corner.

At the heart of the Tagwhat network is its patent-pending augmented reality technology that lets users leave behind digital crumbs (tags) for any location, place or thing, anywhere in the world for friends and followers to discover. Each marker is an interactive social object, and can include direct action links to email, phone, SMS, photos, URL’s, cross-posting to Twitter, Facebook, and more. As a result, friends are able to easily interact and share information with one another with the added benefit of location and AR. Suddenly, “checking in” at a particular coffee shop, dropping pictures at several bar locations from last night’s pub crawl, or creating blog entries from personal favorite locations as they are discovered or re-visited, opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. With a single click, users are able to easily let friends know where they’ll be in 5 minutes, then get turn-by-turn directions to the tagged destination, and flip through photos of a friends’ night out on the way over.

Within the Tagwhat network, marker streams come alive with the digital crumbs and content a member chooses to follow from networks of friends, community members, and businesses. In addition, for a more expansive experience users can reach beyond their existing network and search for specific content and users by keywords. Like restaurants? Follow local culinary aficionados and merge their AR into yours. Like shopping? Find your favorite stores and follow them for the latest deals and events.

Tagwhat also marks an important milestone in the evolutionary path of AR technology, representing a shift from the static Web 1.0 world of AR browsers to the participatory interaction of Web 2.0. Tagwhat is 'create-and-share' mobile AR, and is the first mobile augmented reality distribution system where anyone, not just developers, can create their own AR content and share with their friends anywhere in the world, in seconds, for free.

The Tagwhat network is uniquely flexible, bringing broad base appeal to augmented reality. Mobile users can freely toggle between AR's immersive world where content is overlaid right on top of the actual surroundings in the camera, to an interactive map mode on the device's display. In addition, Tagwhat supports a robust online experience, where personal, interactive maps and social features of Tagwhat are accessible from any web browser. As a result, Tagwhat participation is open to everyone, and not just those with the latest smart-phone.

Channel Lineup

Tagwhat promises to make the AR tag the new “face” to the world for businesses and organizations revolutionizing e-commerce and information delivery. To further broaden and enrich the personal experience, Tagwhat offers opt-in free and premium subscription channels and “smart” advertising that expands the intrinsic value of the network catering specifically to the individual’s tastes, needs and preferences of the community member. At launch, Tagwhat will include four channels: Eat, for finding local restaurants; Drink, a channel for finding pubs and nightlife; Wikipedia, an informational channel for acquiring useful local information; and Foursquare, a fully functional implementation of the game in mobile AR.

Channel and advertising potential for the Tagwhat network is virtually endless for retail, real estate, education and information, entertainment, premium gaming, applications related to the emerging Internet of Things, as well as many other fields. Shops can deliver special deals to nearby customers; universities can offer tours and educational information to visitors and students; application developers can create and market innovative AR-enabled social games.

"Tagwhat gives us a tool to connect stories and places," said Anne Dodge, Program Director, National Public Housing Museum. "It lets us reach the broadest possible audience in the most intimate way, expanding our reach and embedding our stories in the places where they actually happened. This is the technology we've been waiting for."

Tagwhat is free for users and it's easy to get started. New members can sign up for their personal accounts starting today at www.Tagwhat.com.

Note: The iPhone 3GS app has been submitted for review and approval and should be available in the near future.

Worldwide Converged Mobile Device (Smartphone) Market Grows 56.7% Year Over Year in First Quarter of 2010, Says IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Growth of the worldwide converged mobile device market (commonly referred to as smartphones) more than doubled that of the overall mobile phone market in the first quarter, a sign the segment is in high-growth mode again. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 54.7 million units in the first quarter of 2010 (1Q10), up 56.7% from the same quarter a year ago. In contrast, the overall mobile phone market grew 21.7%. Converged mobile devices accounted for 18.8% of all mobile phones shipped in 1Q10, up slightly from 14.4% in 1Q09.

The smartphone market's growth is impressive too when contrasted to the 38% growth in the fourth quarter, which is typically the strongest of the year. This demonstrates the tremendous potential of the market and the depths to which it plunged in the first quarter of last year.

"2010 looks to be another year of large-scale consumer adoption of converged mobile devices," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "Consumers will gravitate to smartphones not just because the devices themselves look 'cool' and 'slick', but because the overall experience aligns with their individual tastes and demands. Users are seeking – and finding – experiences that are intuitive, seamless, and fun. Already, we've seen what Palm's webOS and Google's Android can do. This year, we expect updates for BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile to spark greater smartphone demand with their offerings."

Market Outlook for 2010

Kevin Restivo, senior analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, said higher smartphone sales this year will be a result of greater awareness, increasingly affordable data plans, and the global economic recovery. "More consumers are aware of smartphones now due to positive referrals from friends and family and manufacturer's mass media campaigns," said. Restivo. "Coupled with increased confidence on the part of consumers, these factors will create a perfect storm of demand for suppliers this year."

Top Five Smartphone Vendors Q1 2010

Nokia firmly maintained its position as the leading smartphone vendor worldwide during 1Q10. In addition to introducing several new models – the C3, C6, and the E5 – Nokia announced its first Symbian^3 model, the N8. This, and other Symbian^3 devices, are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year. According to CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Symbian^3 will be more intuitive and fun for end users, and on par with other competitive offerings available on the market.

Research In Motion kept its position as the number two smartphone vendor worldwide on continued growth of its popular BlackBerry devices. Key to its success were its BlackBerry Curve 8520 and BlackBerry Bold 9700, as well as stronger consumer adoption. Co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie recently unveiled the company's new BlackBerry OS 6.0, which promises a smoother and more interactive user interface.

Apple more than doubled its shipments from a year ago, with more iPhones arriving outside its home territory of North America. CEO Steve Jobs announced the latest operating system update, enabling multi-tasking, folders, enhanced email, iBooks for consumers, and iAd, a mobile advertising platform, for developers. A fourth generation iPhone is expected to arrive this summer.

HTC posted high double-digit growth to start off the year, driven primarily by its growing stable of Android-powered products including the Hero, Droid Eris, and MyTouch. The company shows no signs of slowing down, having announced several new devices, including the first WiMAX Android phone, the EVO 4G, slated to launch later this year. HTC also remains committed to Windows Mobile devices, with the HD2 receiving a warm reception and Windows Phone 7 devices expected to launch before the end of the year.

Motorola, having stormed back into the smartphone space in the fourth quarter of 2009, followed up with a new milestone in its short history of shipping Android devices. Now that the DROID and CLIQ (known as the Milestone and DEXT respectively outside the United States) both have a full quarter of availability, the company followed up with six additional devices. The company expects to launch 20 different models and ship 12–14 million Android smartphones this year.

Converged Mobile Devices – These mobile devices are either voice or data centric and are capable of synchronizing personal information and/or email with server, desktop, or laptop computers. These devices must match wireless telephony capability to high level operating systems, include the ability to download data to local storage, run applications, and store user data beyond PIM capabilities. Converged mobile devices must offer the full extent of their application processing capability to the user, regardless of network availability.

The Meizu M9 is the most anticipated smartphone of the year in China, perhaps even its future competitor to the iPhone 4G. He reveals a little more today, after Jack Wong, Meizu's CEO has confirmed that the M9 tunes Android 2.1, we now know will have an HDMI 1.3 output. With this latest news, you can almost certify that the M9 can play HD video. In fact the Samsung C110 processor that embeds, in addition to process 3D, is able to decode Full HD video.

In addition to that image just appeared on the Chinese forum, claiming to be the perfect illustration of the future smartphone. According to the image, the camera would shrink in the hull, and flash would be located behind the glass. The hull is covered with a layer of Teflon pleasant to the touch and provides a good grip. At the front there are two additional touch keys. In my opinion if the true picture looks like this, it will experience a great success.

Here now all known specifications:

* Dimensions: 59.5 mm x 113 mm x 11 mm
* Networks: WCDMA, CDMA, TD-SCDMA
* Screen: 3.6 ", resolution 720 × 480 resolution
* Processor: 1 GHz (Samsung S5PC110)

* Operating System: Android OS 2.1
* APN: 5 megapixels
* Connectivity: Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS / TV-out (HDMI 1.3)
* Memory Expansion: Micro SD / TF
* Battery: 1350 mAh
* Price expected: about 255 € without headphones and 290 € with headphones and a map 8GB

The release appears imminent as all specifications of the phone have been released. Some predict a release on August 18, 1 year and a half to the day after the launch of the M8. Besides, some store have set up a lottery for customers who bought the Meizu M8, if their ticket is drawn it can win a Meizu M9. Then wait here for a picture gallery showing several views of the artist or prototypes that may resemble the future Meizu M9. You decide!

Microsoft recently acknowledged the death of its long-rumored Courier project, which focused on developing a mobile device with two touch screens, and rumors abound that Hewlett-Packard has cancelled its plans for a Windows 7-powered tablet PC. Microsoft, Google and other companies face some fierce competition in the space against Apple, which sold 1 million iPad units during the tablet's first 28 days of release.

Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates suggested during a television interview that rumors of the company's death in the tablet PC space were, at best, premature. His comments followed a week in which Microsoft announced the death of its long-rumored Courier project, which centered on a dual-touch-screen device in a folding book-like format, and in which further scuttlebutt had it that Hewlett-Packard had decided to eliminate a Windows 7-powered "Slate" tablet PC from its upcoming lineup.

"Microsoft has a lot of different tablet projects that we're pursuing," Gates said, according to a Fox Business Network transcript quoted by TechFlash. "We think that work with the pen that Microsoft pioneered will become a mainstream for students. It can give you a device that you can not only read, but also [use to] create documents at the same time."

That would run contrary to other companies' development road maps for tablet PCs, which seem to emphasize the use of hands or fingers to make changes on the screen, as opposed to a stylus. Several legacy products, including touch-screen PDAs running Windows Mobile, have put emphasis on the stylus as a means of input.

Microsoft's Courier project would likely have allowed users to write notes or draw longhand. However, Courier was executed before it could leave the development lab; Frank Shaw, Microsoft's corporate vice president of communications, acknowledged the product's existence and demise simultaneously, saying, "Its technologies will be evaluated for use in future Microsoft offerings."

HP's tablet PC project, though, seemed much more finger-oriented. Whether or not the rumors of its demise eventually prove to be true, the Windows 7-powered Slate would have allowed users to hold video conferences, snap photos and interact with multimedia. But according to certain analysts, HP's recent Palm acquisition may have negatively impacted the project's development.

"HP's upcoming Slate tablet was originally expected to run Windows 7 OS, although using Windows 7 would translate to a higher cost to the consumer and could mean more strain on the processor," Anna Hunt, an analyst with IMS Research, wrote in a May 3 research note. "The tablet market will likely see devices at sub-$250 price points within a year's time … therefore suppliers must be very aware of lowering costs while maximizing performance and end-user experience."

With that in mind, baking the Palm WebOS into a tablet has the potential to affect Microsoft's broader attempts to move into the tablet PC market.

"HP's current tablet with Microsoft Windows has not been well received by reviewers, and TBR believes the Windows PC operating system does not lend itself to a touch-screen tablet experience," John Spooner, an analyst for Technology Business Research, wrote in an April 30 research note. "Microsoft itself is finding the tablet PC market more complicated than expected … We believe a WebOS tablet will be better received than a Windows tablet, which may lead to adoption of WebOS tablet PCs in the enterprise."

Gates' comments are one of the first indications that Microsoft may be continuing to develop products for the tablet space, despite the HP rumors and the Courier termination. That may be strategically necessary for the company, considering how the nascent area of consumer tablets has already seen at least one breakaway success: On May 3, Apple announced that it had sold 1 million iPads in the 28 days since it released the device.

"Apple's done a great job," Gates was quoted as saying on Fox Business News.

Google Android Tablet Ran Air 2 on Nvidia Tegra 2 Chips, Adobe Says

Adobe said a tablet computer it showed at the Web 2.0 Expo May 5 was powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and ran Google's Android OS and Adobe's own Air 2 platform. Adobe declined to say what version of Android the tablet ran, though the Zedomax blog on site said it was Android 2.1, which currently powers smartphones such as the Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One and the new HTC Incredible. Showing Android running with Flash and Air 2 -- a program that lets apps run outside of a Web browser -- is the ultimate show of unity for Google and Adobe versus Apple's iPad, which has shipped more than 1 million units in less than a month.

The tablet Adobe showed spectators at an industry event May 5 was powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 chips and ran Google's Android operating system and Adobe's own Air 2 platform, the software maker confirmed.

Zedomax editor Max Lee visited Adobe's booth at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, where officials for the software maker were showing off an Android tablet running Adobe's Flash technology and Air platform.

Michael Hu, senior product marketing manager of Adobe AIR, told eWEEK in an e-mailed statement:

"At Web 2.0 we are demonstrating Adobe AIR 2 on various devices and operating systems, including an Nvidia Tegra 2 reference tablet that is running on Android OS."
Resource Library:

Hu declined to say on what version of Android the tablet ran, though Lee said he believed it was Android 2.1, which currently powers smartphones such as the Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One and the new HTC Incredible.

Perhaps it was a version customized for tablets no one has seen. Google is expected to launch Android 2.2—its so-called Froyo build—at Google I/O later this month.

In any case, the demo shows that Adobe is indeed getting more comfortable in bed with Android, particularly after its ugly flap with Apple.

The computer maker irked Adobe and its developers when it rewrote its developer licensing terms to swear off support for such cross-platform technologies as Adobe's Flash.

Google and Adobe later confirmed that Android will support Flash, an announcement that could come at Google I/O.

Showing Android running with Flash and Air 2—a program that lets apps run outside of a Web browser—is the ultimate show of unity for Google and Adobe versus Apple's iPad, which has shipped more than 1 million units in less than a month.

In fact, the iPad's fast success means Android tablets can't hit the market soon enough. IDC analyst Al Hilwa said that now that Apple has shown the world a new way to consume information, it will unleash a glut of tablets. Android is the most ready platform to mount an attack on the iPad.

"The alliance around Flash between Google and Adobe is clever for both of them," Hilwa told eWEEK. "For Google it allows it to shape a message of openness and inclusivity that helps it position Android as something other than just a follower.

"For Adobe, the strategy is to be the cross-platform development environment for as many platforms as possible, including crossing between PCs and mobile devices. Developers and content purveyors have a real need to bring out their stuff on as many devices in the market as possible and cannot always address each one with a unique development effort."

IMS Research believes iPad will command 51 percent of the tablet market in 2010, with Google grabbing a 24 percent plot. The Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a strong seller in Europe. Dell's Android 2.0-based Mini 5 tablet is expected in the United States this year.

Adobe's Hu told Zedomax's Lee that he expects several Android models will hit the market this year, eager to grab some of the tablet pie the iPad is enjoying.

Is Motorola Building A Phone OS For China?

As we reported this morning, Motorola apparently just bought Azingo, a little known startup which makes a mobile operating system.

Motorola, which had been quite troubled lately, basically bet its fortunes on the Android operating system, and its Android phones have been selling like hotcakes lately.

So why buy a startup that makes mobile operating systems?

Maybe this is a small acqui-hire for Motorola to get smart developers to work on unrelated software.

Maybe Motorola is working on its own OS, but this seems incredibly unlikely to us: mobile operating systems is a platform game, an incredibly brutal one where even savvy giants like Microsoft and Nokia are fumbling. Motorola knows it doesn't have the resources or the skills to do this. It should stick to what it knows: make sleek hardware and market it to teenage males, and let a partner handle the software.

But we think there's another, more likely, possibility.

Motorola does a lot of business in China, and wants to do a lot more. And as we know, Google isn't exactly on the best terms with the Chinese government right now, or for the foreseeable future. This is a problem for Motorola. It's resorted to awkward workarounds like taking Google search out of its Android phones in China and building its own Chinese app store.

If Motorola wants to go strong on China, it can't rely on Google. The next logical step is to build its own OS for the phones it sells in China, and keep selling Android handsets elsewhere.

Nokia to launch new smartphones

Nokia will launch new smartphones to help close the gap with competitors that have overtaken the world's top mobile phone maker in the market for high-end devices, its chief executive said.

While Nokia still is a global leader in smartphones, it's struggling to compete in the expensive segment with rivals such as Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry.

Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo conceded that the Finland-based company had "plenty of work to do," as the company's share price continued a two-week slide.

Nokia's CEO is promising more smartphones like the N8 to better compete with the iPhone and Blackberry.

"This year, Nokia is planning to introduce a new generation of devices that is expected to help close the gap with the competition in high-end smart phones," he said.

The Nokia chief was speaking amid Finnish media speculation that he would be forced to step down as the company was seen as losing out against chief rivals.

Board chairman Jorma Ollila agreed the past year had been "unsatisfactory", but told the annual general meeting of shareholders (AGM) that "the board supports the company's management," in its business strategy.

Nokia shares plummeted last month after it reported weaker than expected earnings, cut its outlook and said new, high-end phones would ship later than hoped.

Kallasvuo also admitted the Symbian operating system used in most of Nokia's phones had not managed to keep up with those of rivals, but said the company was "fixing this factor as we speak", and added its aim was to become the "image leader" for high-end smartphones.

Kallasvuo said that 83 million customers worldwide were registered as active users of Nokia's mobile services but admitted that it also has to improve in this sector.

"We are working hard to reclaim leadership in high-end smartphones and mobile computers," he said. "It is critical that we improve the customer experience with the usability of both our devices and our services."

Kallasvuo described the new models as a "new generation" of devices, but gave scant details.

"Our approach has been to concentrate on fewer, competitive products that bring the features of Symbian-based smart phones to more and more people around the world," he said. "And we are well on our way to doing that."

Kallasvuo said that 2009 was the 12th consecutive year that Nokia was the No.1 mobile phone maker, when it sold 432 million handsets globally — more than its top three rivals combined.

Nokia, based in Espoo near Helsinki, employs around 126,000 people worldwide.

Nokia Sues Apple Over Technology Used in IPhone, IPad

Nokia Oyj, the world’s biggest maker of mobile phones, filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Apple Inc. in its latest salvo over the iPhone and iPad.

The lawsuit, the fifth patent complaint between the two companies in the past year over smartphone technology, broadens the fight to include Apple’s iPad touch-screen computer tablet. Nokia’s filing today in federal court in Madison, Wisconsin, helped push Apple shares down as much as 8.5 percent in New York trading, their steepest drop since October 2008.

In the three years since the iPhone was introduced, Apple has seized Nokia’s position as the company that defines the high-end smartphone market. Nokia, which took mobile phones to the Internet more than 10 years ago with its keyboard-based Communicator, was slow to move to the touch screens featured on the bestselling iPhone and on the iPad, introduced this year.

“Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices,” said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia. “We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia’s innovation.”

The legal battle began in October, when Espoo, Finland- based Nokia filed a lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing 10 patents. It demanded royalties on the more than 51 million iPhones sold since Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, 55, introduced the device in 2007.

‘Nokia is Serious’

The five patents in the newest complaint relate to enhanced speech and data transmission, and antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, Nokia said in a statement. The patents aren’t the same ones at issue in cases in a federal court in Delaware, and before the U.S. International Trade Commission, according to Laurie Armstrong, a Nokia spokeswoman.

“This suit shows Nokia is serious,” said Tero Kuittinen, an analyst at Greenwich, Connecticut-based MKM Partners who advises investors to sell Nokia shares. “Even in the last suit, they brought out everything but the kitchen sink, covering user interface, power consumption, speaker, camera. This is one of the broadest clusters of patent litigation in the sector over the past 10 years.”

Nokia is believed to be planning a range of “jumbo smartphones and tablets,” which could compete with the iPad, he said.

Patent Battles

The complaint today seeks an unspecified amount of cash compensation and an order that would halt Apple’s use of Nokia inventions.

Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, would only refer to the company’s court filings in Delaware when asked for comment today.

In a December filing, the company described Nokia as being “focused on traditional mobile wireless handsets with conventional user interfaces,” while Apple, is “long a leader in computer technology” that “foresaw the importance of converged user-friendly mobile devices.”

“Patent battles will grow in the mobile industry as we continue to see players coming from the PC and Internet worlds,” said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst with research firm Gartner Inc. Hewlett-Packard Co. cited Palm Inc.’s 1,500 patents as key assets when it announced plans to acquire the mobile- device company last month, she noted.

Apple was down $10.06, or 4.1 percent, to $236.19 at 2:16 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading after falling to as low as $225.21. Nokia’s American depositary receipts, each representing one ordinary share, fell 2 cents to $10.77 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

Apple has risen about 83 percent in the past year, while Nokia’s ADRs have dropped 26 percent.

Symbian System

Nokia, which last month posted lower-than-estimated profit on competition from the iPhone, is still working on a touch- optimized version of the Symbian operating system that is supposed to make its phones as easy to use as Apple’s.

“Apple’s wireless communication devices take advantage of the decades of continued investments by Nokia to advance cellular communications and to distinguish Nokia’s handsets from those offered by its competitors,” Nokia said in the complaint.

In court filings in December and February, Apple claimed Nokia was trying to strong-arm Apple into surrendering access to proprietary technology that differentiates the iPhone from other smartphones. Apple said it doesn’t want to license its iPhone- related patents to competitors.

ITC Cases

Apple also accused Nokia of purposefully withholding information on patent holdings while helping to establish an industry standard and then demanding unreasonable royalties on those standards for Wi-Fi and wireless transmissions, among other technologies. The allegations are part of a dispute in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, with the earliest trial scheduled for 2012.

Each company has filed complaints with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington in cases that could result in a ban on imports of the other company’s phones. Apple’s ITC complaint against Nokia is scheduled to be heard beginning in October, while proceedings on Nokia’s complaint are scheduled for January, according to the agency’s website.

Mark Durrant, a Nokia spokesman, said the company expects the lawsuit filed today in Wisconsin to be resolved in 12 to 18 months.

Madison Court

The Madison court is known for holding patent trials more quickly than in other courts. It takes, on average, about 12 months for a patent case to go trial in Madison, compared with a nationwide average of 26.6 months, said Greg Upchurch, director of research for St. Louis-based LegalMetric Inc., which compiles litigation data for law firms and companies.

The patents in the Delaware case are considered essential to follow industry standards, so Nokia is required to license them on fair terms as it does to more than 40 companies, Durrant said in an interview. The patents in the Wisconsin case aren’t essential to any standard, so Nokia can refuse to license them and just ask a judge to block use by Apple, he said.

The case is Nokia Corp. v. Apple Inc., 10cv249, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (Madison).

Motorola buys own mobile Linux firm

Cracks in the Android?

Motorola has bought a mobile Linux company, according to an industry source, potentially busting its monogamous relationship with Google's Android and undercutting a mobile Linux effort that Motorola helped found.

The handset manufacturer and Google Android partner has purchased Azingo, maker of a Linux operating system for smartphones that gives you touch-based screen input, features a WebKit-based browser, works with Adobe Systems' Flash, and comes with an SDK.

Azingo is a privately held firm based in India, with offices in Silicon Valley and South Korea. It's understood the company's full team of several hundred engineers have transferred to Motorola along with its management.

News of the purchase leaked after an Azingo engineer updated his LinkedIn profile (below). This was picked up here, and an industry source has confirmed with The Reg Thursday morning that the deal had gone through.
Yogish at Motorola

The acquisition apparently closed in April. A Motorola spokesperson declined to comment, saying the company does not comment on rumor and speculation. Significantly, she added that Motorola "remains focused on Android."

One industry source described the Azingo team as "hardcore mobile Linux developers" capable of building and supporting any Linux on a phone.

The deal will potentially help Motorola staff up on Linux expertise and follows similar acquisitions of Wind River, MontaVista, and Palm by Intel, Cavium Network, and Hewlett-Packard respectively.

Owning Azingo should give Motorola more options in working with Linux on mobile as it now has more skills on-board plus its own mobile Linux operating system.

That means Motorola can reduce its dependency on Google. Motorola is the largest maker of Android phones in the US thanks to its heavily promoted Droid. But according to one report, the company was "particularly miffed" by Google's decision to compete against the Droid with its own Android offering - the Nexus One - sold from the company's own site, after Motorola and carrier Verizon spent $100m to promote their Droid.

Last month, Google quietly shelved plans for a version of Nexus One on Verizon's network - the largest mobile network in the US - apparently responding to pressure from Verizon.

Motorola's Azingo deal also bodes ill for the LiMO Foundation, whose members include Vodafone, Samsung, Panasonic, and Verizon. Azingo is listed as a core LiMO member, but in 2009, Motorola walked off the board of the consortium that it helped found in 2007 and downgraded its membership, saying it was going to focus on Android instead of LiMO.

At the time, Motorola said in a statement: "The Android platform gives it a richer, more consistent foundation with strong support for the ecosystem and developer community."

It's difficult to see how or why Motorola will want Azingo engineers to continue participating in LiMO's rival work, Azingo helped build the Vodafone 360 Service for H1 and M1 LiMO handsets from Samsung last year.

Did Motorola Buy a Mobile Operating System?

Motorola is finding success with its Google Android-powered Droid, but the handset maker’s co-CEO has previously indicated that he wants Motorola to have its own mobile operating system and supporting ecosystem. It may have found one, in the form of a Linux-based platform from Azingo. Android and Me notes that LinkedIn now shows an Azingo engineer as being employed by Motorola, potentially indicating that Motorola has purchased Azingo. Such an acquisition would provide Motorola with greater control over software offerings of future handsets, but more importantly, would help the company differentiate itself from competitors.

With such differentiation however, comes the challenge of creating a thriving ecosystem. By using Android for smartphones, Motorola currently enjoys the benefits of the Android developer community and the Android Market. If Motorola were to strike out on its own with a brand-new OS, however, it would lose those important benefits. And Motorola co-CEO, Sanjay Jha, clearly recognizes this, noting on the company first-quarter earnings call:

“I’ve always felt that owning your OS is important, provided you have an ecosystem, you have all the services and you have an ability and the scale to execute on keeping that OS at the leading edge. And I continue to believe that at some point, if we have all of those attributes, that owning our own OS will be a very important thing.”

Azingo’s mobile platform, which debuted in February of this year, is based on web standards for use on touchscreen devices and uses web runtimes for widgets. So if Motorola has indeed purchased the company, it could find itself able to quickly attract programmers that use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to develop mobile software for the Azingo platform. Such an approach is a growing trend in the mobile space — Palm does it with webOS and the Symbian Foundation recently adopted the same web standards usage for mobile app development.

An early look at Azingo’s mobile platform from the 2009 Mobile World Congress shows a fairly robust set of widgets, a WebKit browser, extensive application suites and even support for Flash Lite. Essentially, Azingo Mobile 2.0 is a full smartphone platform on its own, even without third-party software. There’s also specific mention of an App Store for Azingo apps, so if Motorola did purchase the company, it may have acquired not just a new mobile operating system, but the foundation of a supporting ecosystem as well.

Women blame BlackBerrys and iPhones for poor sex life

Modern gadgets such as the Blackberry and iPhone are ruining women's sex lives because their husbands are too distracted in the bedroom.

More than a quarter of women (28 per cent) claim that email and internet are disrupting their love lives, with hand-held devices particularly to blame.

Other factors which prevent couples enjoying intimacy include long working hours (cited by 55 per cent of women), tiredness (83 per cent) and being too busy (74 per cent).

The research by pharmaceutical firm Bayer also shows that many women are missing their sexual peak by a decade.

More than one in two feel sexiest during their 30s, yet two in three have the most sex in their 20s.

One in ten women say their fear of pregnancy inhibits them in the bedroom, with one in five women admitting they shun contraception.

The survey found that on average British women have sex 1.4 times a week, but six in ten women aged between 25 and 34 would like a more active sex life.

Fifty-one per cent of women believe they reach their sexual peak in their 30s, but 66 per cent say they had their most sex during their 20s.

Two in three women (65 per cent) say their partners do not make enough effort in the bedroom, however, one in three women never initiate sex and always let their partner make the first move.

Four in ten women say it only takes a compliment to put them in the mood for sex, while one in three saying having more time to themselves would boost their sex life.

Perhaps disappointingly, more than a third of women say they have not felt sexy for at least a month and 14 per cent claim they have never felt sexy.

ESPOO, Finland -- Nokia ( NOK) announced that it has filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that Apple iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five important Nokia patents.

Nokia's Ovi Life Tools Launched in China

Affordable Mobile Solution Launched to Help Connect Rural Consumers.

BEIJING, China -- Nokia ( NOK) announced the launch of Ovi Life Tools (Nokia Ovi Sheng Huo Tong) in China. Designed for the emerging markets, Ovi Life Tools offers a wide range of information services covering healthcare, agriculture, education and entertainment. The service addresses the needs of rural consumers with the vision to provide livelihood and life-impacting benefits to improve their economic prosperity and quality of life. At launch, two affordable and easy-to-use mobile phones, the Nokia 1616 and the Nokia 1800, will support the new service.

"While China's urbanization is growing rapidly, we believe there is a compelling need to provide mobile solutions in emerging markets bringing affordable, quality, and locally relevant information direct to the consumer," said Chris Leong, Senior Vice President, Greater China, Korea & Japan.

"As an innovative rural mobile solution addressing the information gaps of rural people in China, Ovi Life Tools was designed from the ground up through extensive research. It is a result of close cooperation between partners and we are sure it will continue to develop over time helping to enhance the lives of consumers," said Ms Leong.

According to Sun Xiaoming, Deputy Director of China Rural Technology Development Center of China's Ministry of Science and Technology, "Currently there are almost 732 million rural residents in China: which is roughly 55 percent of the total population. The Chinese Government has consistently placed rural issues as a top priority, and this includes the development, access and dissemination of information to people in rural areas. Fast and effective communication coupled with locally relevant information will help promote economic growth and productivity.

"Nokia's Ovi Life Tools is an example of how a private company can provide innovative solutions which are relevant, affordable and beneficial to the larger population, and this effectively complements the Government's effort to bridge the technology and information gap currently faced," Ms Sun said.

"Mobile phones are widely used by people in rural areas; for many, it is their primary source of information. I would like to congratulate Nokia for developing a unique and innovative service that has tremendous potential to improve lives and the livelihood of farmers and sub-urban consumers," added Ms Sun.

Nokia has been working with a number of partners in building Ovi Life Tools in order to develop a healthy ecosystem for all stakeholders in the value chain including mobile operators, content providers and service providers.

Mr Li Yong, Chairman of Beijing Nongxintong Technology, the content provider for the agriculture service, said, "For many years we have been searching for ways to provide agriculture information that allows rural people to acquire personalized content on their mobile phones. The solution that Nokia brings allows us to do this today."
