[HOW-TO] Enabling Wireless N on Evo

Monday, June 21, 2010

Update: Thanks to Calkulin there are now flashable zips on my blog post as well as just the driver. Just flash them like any other update.zip file.

So the Evo's WiFi chip supports Wireless N technology, which allows for faster throughput on your WiFi connection. To use this you obviously need a Wireless N capable AP or router. Basically, for some reason (I am going to assume battery life?), HTC decided to disable the wireless n capability of this chip but this can be fixed. Since we don't have the source for the driver we need to use a hex editor. Note, if using AOSP wireless n will already be enabled using the AOSP driver. But if you are using a Sense rom then you will need to do the following. Also I am including a download link with the driver that you can just push if you don't want to get dirty with a hex editor. Anyway, here we go:

1. Download a hex editor (I just googled hex editor and downloaded this one: http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delph...vi32/xvi32.htm)
2. Go into a command prompt or shell and perform:

Code:
adb pull /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko ./bcm4329.ko.old
adb pull /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko ./bcm4329.koThis will pull the file and make a backup in case you need to replace the backup.
3. In your hex editor open the file you just pulled. Now, in two spots HTC added 'nmode' in here to disable Wireless N. All we have to do is modify this string to be any other 5 character string and wireless N will be enabled. I did a search and replace and replaced 'nmode' with '-----' (Note: Do not include the single quotes).
4. Save the file.
5. Perform the following in a command prompt or shell:

Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
adb push bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.koNow wireless N should be enabled on your device. If not, restart it and try. If you ever want to restore your original just perform the following:

Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
adb push bcm4329.ko.old /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko.

Below is the download link for the already modified wireless driver.

UPDATED! Breaking: Droid 2 and Droid X will NOT Have 1.0GHz Snapdragon Processors

Sometimes a correction is needed on your initial words. Just a minor adjustment…the Droid X and Droid 2 will NOT be running 1.0GHz Snapdragon processors.

Let me just confirm that they are definitely running OMAP 1.0GHz processors. (3630 or 3640? I’m not calling that one. I’ve got 3630, but apparently only the 3640 runs easily at 1.0GHz.)

Yikes. At least our sources were about as quick as @DroidLanding to correct themselves.

Don’t hate me too much. At least laugh along with me on this one.

Everyone resume the OMAP party train again.

Dell offering HTC Aria for free

Currently available from AT&T for $129.99, this newcomer is a sprightly, mid-high end smartphone from HTC with the flavoursome 2.1 Eclaire running in the background. However, if you feel that $129.99 is too much, then get to Dell’s website now where you can snap up the HTC Aria for nothing, nada, $0… And this is across the board, without having to pay for activation or shipping either. Even though this is for new AT&T customers only, it’s still a great deal.

RockPlayerBase Plays DivX, AVI, and Other Videos You Want on Android

Android: By default, Android phones can only handle a small number of video types, and leaves your ripped and downloaded files in the dust. RockPlayerBase, on the other hand, nimbly plays DivX, AVI, XviD, MKV, and other file types.

The bad news is that RockPlayerBase isn't available in the Android Market just yet, but is widely available in beta form if you poke around on Google—the via link below, Android Community, and others have posted media hosting links. It's a very minimal application—it launches with a file browser, then jumps into a player when you've picked your file, with simple play controls and timeline scrubbing. You'll see the frames-per-second count in the upper-right corner, but you can kill it by clicking the DivX button once or twice.

RockPlayerBase is, at the moment, a free download for Android phones running 2.1 and above only. Be sure to grab it before your next flight.

Todd Herman Voted World's Greatest Salesperson

Receives a Fellowship at OgilvyOne to Craft the Sales Guide of the Future.

CANNES, France -- Todd Herman, an international performance coaching and training expert from Edmonton, Canada, was voted the World's Greatest Salesperson. Using real-time SMS voting, a live audience selected the winner during the OgilvyOne "Can you sell, or else?" seminar at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Mr Herman and the runners-up – Eric Polins, managing partner of a marketing consulting firm from Tampa, USA, and Lee Abbas, a former Panasonic marketing executive and most recently an English teacher in Hokkaido, Japan – all presented live on stage their pitch for selling the Motorola Milestone (Droid in the USA) phone.

In addition to receiving the title of World's Greatest Salesperson, Mr Herman receives a three month fellowship at OgilvyOne Worldwide to help craft a sales guide to the 21st century. The principles of the guide will be presented at a thought leadership session during the Direct Marketing Association's annual conference on October 11, 2010, in San Francisco.

Moments after winning the contest, Mr Herman remarked, "I honestly can't believe I'm standing here with the World's Greatest Salesperson award. It's been such a fun experience and I'm really excited for the fellowship and to be working with OgilvyOne over the next three months crafting the new sales guide for the 21st century. It's such an honor to be working with a company whose founder has been such a huge influence on my business philosophy."

"From the very first time we saw Todd selling a humble brick in his YouTube video, we knew he had potential," said Brian Fetherstonhaugh, Chairman & CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide. "Todd is a true student of persuasion and motivation. It shone through at every stage of the World's Greatest Salesperson competition. We look forward to working with Todd as we create the guide to selling in the 21st century."

The World's Greatest Salesperson contest grew out of OgilvyOne's mission to reinvigorate the noble art of salesmanship and the credo of its founder David Ogilvy who said, "We sell, or else." To that end, OgilvyOne launched a global search to find the World's Greatest Salesperson through an online video competition on YouTube where contestants were asked to submit a two minute pitch on how they would sell a red brick. The multi-platform contest generated over 230 submissions on YouTube from 12 countries, more than 100,000 visits to the YouTube brand channel, and 90,000+ video views.

To celebrate Motorola's involvement with the contest, Ogilvy developed an Android app for Cannes attendees. Named Cannesdroid, the app provides detailed information and maps for festival activities, a live twitterfall that will allow bloggers to share their views of speeches and workshops as well as useful recommendations for the surrounding area. Cannesdroid uses "Wikitude" type technology to act as a guide to events at the Festival, in which users can point their device at venues as if they were pointing the camera, and relevant information about what's occurring in the areas, myths from Cannes in years past and tweets from attendees in the area are seen through the viewfinder and will appear on-screen. The app will be free to download from the Android marketplace for all Cannes attendees with an Android device. Cannesdroid will also be pre-loaded on 35 phones that will be distributed to industry VIPs.

Ruckus Wireless Introduces First High-Speed 802.11n Wi-Fi Wall Switch

New Device Helps Hotels Simplify the Delivery of Converged IP Services, Redefine Network Cost Models and Eliminate Complexity from Pulling Wires Everywhere.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- HITEC EXHIBITION/CONFERENCE -- Ruckus Wireless™ introduced the first Wi-Fi Wall Switch (the ZoneFlex™ 7025) that integrates high speed 802.11n Wi-Fi technology with wired Ethernet ports into an elegant, inconspicuous and low-profile wall jack that fits into any standard United States or European electrical junction box.

The Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch redefines the deployment model and cost structure for hotels looking to converge their wired and wireless networks into a single infrastructure capable of reliably connecting a new world of in-room IP-based devices and services. For the first time, hotels are now able to offer multiple, high-value IP-based services over a single wired/wireless network at the highest performance and lowest cost per room.

Complementing the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch, the company also today unveiled its new ZoneSwitch line of affordable 802.3at/af power over Ethernet (POE) switches.

"For hotels, the first thing that must be achieved from a guest technology perspective is wireless everywhere," said Douglas Rice, Executive Vice President and CEO of Hotel Technology Next Generation (HTNG), a non-profit industry trade association. "Beyond that, the hospitality market clearly sees the enormous benefits that an IP-based network brings in delivering a better guest experience, new services that will drive customer loyalty and better staff productivity across their hotels."

The Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch was purposely developed to meet the growing demands within hotels to connect in-room devices that are now IP-enabled while concurrently supporting a broader range of IP-based services. Beyond high-speed Internet access (HSIA), hotels want to deliver these new services - such as high definition television and video on demand (VOD), digital advertising, voice communications, hotel service optimization, in-room device monitoring and even environmental room controls - over a single, unified and centrally managed wired/wireless network.

With the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch, hotels have a simple in-room device that addresses these requirements and solves IT problems that have long hampered hotels such as:

* Operating disparate wired and wireless networks,
* Unsightly cables and network devices within hotel guest rooms,
* Installing more Ethernet cables in guest rooms and other areas to connect new IP-based devices,
* Running additional Ethernet cabling to support standalone Wi-Fi access points,
* Deploying in-room switches and other infrastructure necessary for network connectivity and,
* Retrofitting furniture and hotel aesthetics to hide or accommodate networking equipment.

The Ruckus ZoneFlex Wi-Fi Wall Switch is also ideal for filling "void areas" within hotels and schools such as corners of buildings, conference rooms and other locations where ubiquitous wired and wireless coverage is not pervasive. For many hotels, Ethernet access in conference rooms is typically handled by bringing in a switch to provide wired connectivity if wireless isn't available. The Ruckus ZoneFlex Wi-Fi Wall Switch eliminates this problem allowing multiple devices to connect using both wires and Wi-Fi. In addition the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch is perfect for service providers and property owners seeking to deliver high value IP-based services to their customers.

Hotel Nirvana

For many existing hotels Ethernet cabling is sparse or not available in every guest room. Even in locations such as the front desk, conference rooms, meeting spaces and business centers, Ethernet ports and wireless connectivity is limited.

Hotels that have deployed an extensive wired Ethernet network often need more ports to connect new IP-enabled devices and to support new multimedia services. Ethernet switches can be installed in guest rooms, but this requires more power, can be disruptive and often involves custom furniture design to hide the devices. This adds significant cost, complexity and management problems.

According to industry estimates, running a single Ethernet cable can cost up to $250 per guest room. When Wi-Fi access points, network switches, and other infrastructure products essential to running a computer network are added that cost can rise to $500 or more per room. The Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch effectively cuts this cost in half.

For many hoteliers, Wi-Fi has been an afterthought to the wired network with access points being retrofitted throughout the property to provide a base level of wireless connectivity to guests. But as many new services and hotel devices embrace IP as the preferred method of connectivity and management, the requirement for a unified wired and wireless network has quickly become a necessity.

"Today's hotel guests depend on both wired and wireless high-speed Internet, and it can be difficult or expensive for existing hotels to do both well. Many hotels need devices that support both, and that can be easily installed into existing infrastructures," said Rice.

Enter the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch

Deployed as a standalone device or centrally managed by any ZoneDirector wireless LAN controller or Ruckus FlexMaster Wi-Fi management system, the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch reduces the cost and complexity of installing and managing wired and wireless network services.

The Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch is driven by a single POE connection and provides four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet jacks and two uplink Ethernet wiring options. Additionally, the Ruckus Wi-Fi Wall Switch uses POE to power a device such as an IP phone and provides native connectivity to digital phones through a single digital PBX pass through port.

Introducing the Ruckus ZoneSwitch

The Ruckus ZoneSwitch 4000 series is a family of fully-managed, rack-mountable, Layer 2, 24-port 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet POE switches. Each ZoneSwitch offers full security, QoS and management features and provides four dual-personality ports that support pluggable fiber transceivers for easy and flexible network uplink.

Completely interoperable with Ruckus ZoneFlex APs, the ZoneSwitch comes in two models. The ZoneSwitch 4224 offers 375 watts of power over Ethernet and supports 12 concurrent IEEE 802.3at or 24 concurrent 802.3af connections across all ports. The ZoneSwitch 4124 offers 180 watts of power over Ethernet and supports 12 concurrent IEEE 802.3af connections across all ports. The Ruckus ZoneSwitch line will support central management through the Ruckus FlexMaster system.

NI Technology Updates Outlooks for Cirrus Logic, RF Micro Devices, Skyworks Solutions, Anadigics and TriQuint Semiconductor

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Next Inning Technology Research (http://www.nextinning.com), an online investment newsletter focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, has updated its outlooks for Cirrus Logic (Nasdaq: CRUS), RF Micro Devices (Nasdaq: RFMD), Skyworks Solutions (Nasdaq: SWKS), Anadigics (Nasdaq: ANAD) and TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq: TQNT).

Editor Paul McWilliams has displayed uncanny accuracy in identifying winners and losers during this challenging and historic period for the markets. After logging a very successful 2009 that included suggesting his readers buy a number of stocks that subsequently posted gains of 100% to 400%, he advised readers on May 3rd that the markets were heading for a correction. As many investors are painfully aware, McWilliams was right again.

Now that the major indexes have fallen more than the ten percent required to classify the drop as a "correction," McWilliams has outlined what he views as the real risks and advised Next Inning readers how he thinks things will play out during the balance of 2010.

Trial subscribers will receive McWilliams' new special report "Updating the Assembly, Package & Test Sector From Top to Bottom," in which McWilliams analyzes where capacity constraints are causing a bottleneck in the assembly, package and test sector and points to new opportunities to profit. In addition, trial subscribers will also receive the freshly published Summer Strategy Review, his highly acclaimed State of Tech reports that offer in-depth sector by sector coverage of over 65 leading tech companies and specific guidance on which stocks he thinks investors should own and which should be avoided. These reports, as well as McWilliams' regular commentary and detailed earnings previews, are available for free to trial subscribers.

In addition, subscribers will have access to McWilliams' daily commentary and actionable alerts. To take advantage of this offer and receive these reports for free, please visit the following link:

https://www.nextinning.com/subscribe/index.php?refer=prn1037

McWilliams covers these topics and more in his recent reports:

-- Cirrus Logic is up more than 600% since McWilliams tipped investors off to an opportunity in the stock in early 2009. Even after this meteoric rise, does McWilliams see more potential upside for Cirrus? How can investors who have held the stock during its upswing best protect their profits? What stock does McWilliams think might be a better place to switch to for Cirrus investors?

-- Is Nokia's inability to gain traction in the smartphone space actually good news for RF Micro? Are trends in Asia aligning to benefit RF Micro? How much upside does McWilliams expect from the stock? What other company does McWilliams think will benefit from the slow transitions to new designs we're seeing at Nokia?

-- Does McWilliams see Anadigics as a likely successful turnaround story? How much upside is he modeling for the stock?

-- What key markets does McWilliams expect will drive demand for TriQuint products? How much upside is he expecting from the stock?

-- How does Skyworks compare to its peers in the RF semiconductor sector?

Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 246% since its inception versus 24% for the S&P 500.

Businesses Can Now Create Quality Mobile Web sites in Minutes When They 'goMobi'

dotMobi's new low-cost goMobi™ product creates a smartphone Web experience on every mobile phone, giving any business a rich, icon-driven mobile website — quickly, easily and completely.

BRUSSELS -- ICANN MEETING NO. 38 -- dotMobi, a worldwide leader in the development and discovery of quality mobile content, announced the global availability of goMobi™, a unique product designed to help businesses quickly and easily create and publish quality mobile websites in mere minutes. Unlike existing products, goMobi brings together the breadth of traditional content management systems with the speed and simplicity of mobile website builders. That means businesses of all sizes can join the mobile Web revolution with sophisticated mobile sites that work on all mobile phones but at a very low price point.

Targeted primarily at small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) as well as mobile developers and designers, goMobi lets businesses engage current and potential customers with sites that recognize the capabilities of each mobile phone and display the site's content so that it looks its very best on that specific phone.

"All goMobi sites use a friendly, icon-based design, and all goMobi sites automatically recognize what handset your customer is using, so goMobi sites make every phone seem like it's a smartphone. Because of this, your customers will always associate your company with a good mobile experience —no matter what phone they're using," said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi.

"goMobi websites are hosted 'in the cloud' by dotMobi, so SMBs don't pay extra for hosting or have to worry about other technology aspects," Harvin added. "goMobi site owners can build a site in minutes and then focus on their business, while their mobile website works to bring in new customers. And if site owners want to make changes, they can do so in seconds. For example, a business owner can test different mobile coupon offers to see which one is most effective for bringing foot traffic in the door."

Designed to meet consumer expectations of small businesses

dotMobi recently commissioned usability research firm Human Factors International to survey global attitudes towards the mobile Web in the USA, India, Germany and China. The company found that 53 percent of the respondents regularly use a mobile phone to access mobile websites while only 26 percent attempt to access standard desktop sites on mobile phones. Further, 83 percent of participants would prefer to visit a "made-for-mobile" website versus a "designed-for-desktop" version when using a mobile phone or portable device like an Apple iPad. And according to Web measurement leader Gomez, 61 percent of mobile Web visitors are less likely to visit a website again if they have a bad user experience.

goMobi was designed to meet these expectations while making the experience of building a mobile-specific website as carefree as possible. For SMBs, goMobi:

* maximizes customer contacts by using the capabilities of the mobile phone — calls, texts, location-based services — and helping convert leads into customers,
* increases mobile visits to businesses through improved search-engine optimization (SEO) by using key words in search engines and free directory listings,
* helps convert visitors to "hot leads" with features like mobile coupons and reservation requests,
* incorporates external, third-party applications, adding functionality & localization for businesses and a distributed distribution model for application developers & channel partners.

"With interest in the mobile Web continuing to explode, SMBs can now reach the world's billions of mobile Web users — quickly, easily and completely," said Trey Harvin. "goMobi connects SMBs to their customers significantly faster because a goMobi site delivers only the content mobile customers need, while making it easy for businesses to set up and maintain a unique mobile website. And since a goMobi website works on all mobile handsets, it ensures a business is available on the complete range of mobiles available, not just iPhones and Androids."

Special tools for developers and designers

The speed and ease of building mobile websites with goMobi is also a boon to Web developers and designers, so they can include mobile in their service offerings. To meet their special needs, goMobi includes a powerful suite of tools which allows developers to control the automated transformation of desktop website content to mobile-friendly content as well as accessing HTML metatags for site items, along with a mobile/desktop switcher and advanced device detection capabilities.

Getting goMobi

Denver, Colorado-based name.com was the exclusive partner for goMobi beta trials and is now the first to market goMobi with their complete domain and hosting offerings.

Bill Mushkin, CEO of name.com, said, "Given the ease and speed that anyone — from tech amateur to design professional — can now build and deploy a mobile website with goMobi, I'm positive that the current boom in mobile Web use will grow tenfold in a short time. Our wildly successful beta of goMobi is strong proof of that."

For information on how registrars, Web services companies, developers and designers can offer goMobi to their customers, please contact sales@goMobi.info.

Verizon Wireless, National Cherry Festival Team Up To Benefit Domestic Violence Organizations, Survivors In Michigan

Michiganders Asked to Help Collect 5,000 Used Phones by End of July.

OUTHFIELD, MI — Verizon Wireless has partnered with the National Cherry Festival to help domestic violence organizations and the women and children they serve through the collection of no-longer used wireless phones and equipment.

Verizon Wireless, which is the presenting sponsor of the 2010 National Cherry Festival, will donate $2 for every wireless phone collected in Michigan through the end of July, up to $10,000, to the National Cherry Festival Foundation. The Festival Foundation will allocate the dollars raised through this special HopeLine® drive to non-profit organizations committed to the awareness and prevention of domestic violence.

Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine program turns no-longer-used wireless phones into support for domestic violence awareness and prevention organizations. Proceeds from the HopeLine program are used to supply wireless phones with free airtime to survivors and to contribute grants to domestic violence agencies across the country. Phones that cannot be refurbished are recycled in an environmentally sound way.

Michiganders can drop off phones and accessories from any wireless service provider, in any condition, at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Michigan as well as at the National Cherry Festival office in Traverse City and at the festival itself. Collection boxes will be placed at various locations throughout the festival open space.

The Festival Foundation was created in 2008 by representatives of the National Cherry Festival to provide a means by which the greater Grand Traverse communities could support education and charitable efforts focusing on agriculture, tourism and the National Cherry Festival.

“We are thrilled to have Verizon Wireless on board, not only as presenting sponsor of the National Cherry Festival but also as a partner of the National Cherry Festival’s Foundation,” said Tim Hinkely, executive director of the National Cherry Festival. “HopeLine and its mission line up very well with the mission of the Festival Foundation. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together the passion of two organizations and combine their resources to make a difference in our community.”

“So many of us tuck our old cell phones away for safe keeping when we get new ones, just in case we may need them one day,” said Greg Haller, president–Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “Before we know it, though, we’ve got a drawer full of phones not being used. We’re asking Michiganders to open those drawers, empty them out and help us collect 5,000 phones to benefit domestic violence survivors.”

The National Cherry Festival presented by Verizon Wireless will take place along the shores of West Grand Traverse Bay in the Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City, Michigan, July 3 through July 10, 2010. Visit the Festival’s website at www.cherryfestival.org for an up-to-the minute schedule of events and information as well as for National Cherry Festival Foundation information.

Java Verified Organization Launches 'Simple App' Testing Services

New product offering helps reduce costs and make it easier for Java ME developers to obtain the Java Verified mark of quality.

LONDON -- The Unified Testing Initiative (UTI), the global not-for-profit mobile application testing body, announced new Java Verified testing services for simple Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) applications. Java ME is the world's most broadly deployed mobile runtime, utilized by 9 of the top 10 handset manufacturers and powers nearly 3 billion phones in over 150 countries worldwide. The new Simple App testing criteria dramatically reduces the amount of time and money it takes to test many Java ME applications, making it easier for developers to meet App Store and industry requirements for Java Verified certification.

"We recognize that there are many applications that do not need to be tested against the full range of Java Verified criteria," said Martin Wrigley, chair of Java Verified and director of developer services, Orange. "Many of the apps selling today within App Stores don't use network connectivity, or access consumer's information inside the device. So, for applications that don't ask for such privileged access, we've cut down the set of Java Verified tests that need to be run, and therefore the costs."

The Java Verified organization has worked with all of its test houses to update the testing criteria for simple app testing, allowing developers to get these applications tested to the Java Verified standard, and signed with the Java Verified certificate, at a cost that typically averages 75 euros for each application. Developers wishing to obtain Java Verified accreditation will work with their preferred test house to establish the appropriate level of testing for their application. Java ME developers interested in learning more about Simple App testing from Java Verified are encouraged to visit www.javaverified.com.

About Java Verified

The primary goal of Java Verified is to provide developers with testing and resources for delivering more high quality Java ME applications to more devices faster. The Java Verified management board includes representation from AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone. Java Verified membership is open to all organizations interested in advancing high-quality mobile applications in a collaborative environment. In time for Wimbledon, AT&T* and Tennis Channel today announced the addition of Tennis Channel to the U-verse® TV lineup. Tennis Channel is available on channel 660 and channel 1660 (High Definition) in the AT&T U450 package, in addition to The Sports Package, with plans for expanded future distribution across multiple AT&Tscreens, including AT&T mobile and U-verse Online services.

Tennis Channel is the only 24-hour, network dedicated to the professional sport and tennis lifestyle. A hybrid of comprehensive sports, health, fitness, pop culture, entertainment, lifestyle and travel programming, the network houses every aspect of the wide-ranging, worldwide tennis community. It also has the most concentrated single-sport coverage in television, with telecast rights to the US Open; The Championships, Wimbledon; Roland Garros (French Open); Australian Open; US Open Series; Davis Cup and more. These events are part of the network’s rights to every one of the top-100 tournaments in tennis, including 3,500 hours of high-definition competition throughout the year.

“We’re proud to bring the Tennis Channel to AT&T customers. It’s a great addition to the U-verse TV channel lineup and our Sports Multiview app,” said Dan York, president of content, AT&T. "This deal helps us with important strategic content initiatives and gives our U-verse TV customers access to even more exciting sports content, and in thrilling HD."

"AT&T's widely distributed launch of Tennis Channel in the development of their forward-thinking business is further affirmation of the unique value of our pro-sports and lifestyle service,” said Patrick Wilson, senior vice president, distribution, Tennis Channel. “This new agreement illustrates the marriage of the top quality, broad U-verse subscriber base with our network’s premium content, as a powerful tool for reaching the most valued audience in television.”

AT&T U-verse offers many features that help fans wanting to catch every exciting tennis moment. The AT&T U-verse DVR with Total Home capability lets you record up to four shows at once and play them back on any connected TV in the house. If you’re not at home for a match, U-verse TV customers can record Tennis Channel coverage with their U-verse DVR and play it back at any time.

U-verse TV also offers an extensive HD channel lineup with more than 130 HD channels. And with fast channel change and picture-in-picture browse, you can channel surf between Tennis Channel and other channels without the delay experienced on other digital TV services. iPhone 4 pre-orders begin shipping

EVERYBODY PANIC! Wait. No. What’s that other thing we use to open posts sometimes?

Good news, everyone! Yeah. That’s the one. Good news, everyone! According to roughly 67 billion tips in our inbox, Pre-ordered iPhone 4s have just started hitting delivery trucks around the country!

If you pre-ordered, go ahead — go check if your status has changed. Don’t worry, we’ll wait. Actually, we won’t wait, because this is text and that is impossible.

Before you get too excited: just because your device shipped today and you live eighteen feet from a FedEx depot doesn’t mean that you’re getting your iPhone 4 early. Apple tends to have tricks up their sleeves to keep these things locked down until the big day (sort of like Santa, wherein Santa is Steve Jobs. Sorry, kids, Steve Jobs isn’t real.) With that said, some do slip through the cracks from time to time, so don’t be too ashamed if you’ve got an urge to camp out on your stoop. We’ll be right there with you (except on our own stoop, not yours. You’re cool and all, we just really like our stoop.)

First person to get their pre-order early gets.. uhh.. gets their iPhone 4 before everyone else! Hurray!

Toshiba unveils its ultraslim smart companion AC100

Highly portable smart companion with always-on capability needs less than a second to wake up from standby mode.

Toshiba Europe GmbH today entered the mobile internet device market by introducing the Toshiba AC100, which is designed with a clamshell form factor.

Its slimness and light weight coupled with its always-on capability makes it the ideal device to consume media, browse the Internet and view and edit documents, emails and other messages while out and about. The AC100 can remain in standby mode for up to seven days. The highly personalisable 25.7cm (10.1'') AC100 will be available during the third quarter of 2010 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The best out of two worlds
“Our smart companion, the AC100, is a member of the mobile internet device segment that combines the best of two product categories: like a smartphone, it is always on, whilst offering the convenience of a clamshell netbook with a bigger screen and a full size keyboard,” says Thomas Teckentrup, General Manager, Product, Strategy and Development Division, Computer Systems Group EMEA. It is targeted at users who utilise several devices but still desire an easy-to use, slim and light smart companion that can be taken almost everywhere and that offers superior usability to that of smartphones.

No need to recharge every day
The AndroidTM based system takes less than a second to switch the AC100 from standby to full activity mode whilst supporting a smartphone-like ‘always-on’ capability. The Toshiba AC100 can go for up to seven days without having to be recharged. When being used intensively, it can provide at least eight hours of mixed browsing and video playback on one charge.

Simple-to-use and easy-to-personalise
The black and orange coloured AC100 is intuitively usable and offers the possibility to personalise the device by downloading applications and widgets. The AC100 ships with a number of applications pre-installed, amongst them Documents To Go®, for viewing and editing Microsoft Office files, an E-mail Client with POP3, IMAP and Exchange support, a messaging client, Opera Mobile for browsing the web as well as Toshiba Media Player for playing and viewing video, music and pictures.

Users can also deploy up to five home screens on their Toshiba AC100, which can be configured to change automatically depending on their location as indicated by the SSID . For example, an owner could set short-cuts to work-related applications, widgets and ‘live-files’ to appear on the home screen when they are in their office, personal applications and widgets when they are at home and entertainment-orientated applications and widgets everywhere else.

Mosaic Telecom to transform rural mobile broadband

Nokia Siemens Networks provides industry’s first standards compliant 3G femtocell solution with Airvana providing the 3G high speed packet access (HSPA) femtocell in advanced wireless services (AWS) spectrum.

Subscribers of Mosaic Telecom, a rural service provider in the United States, will soon enjoy guaranteed access to 3G services around their homes and offices. The operator is offering personal, mini, 3G base stations, connected via fixed broadband, to support high-quality quad-play services and mobile broadband in their premises. Mosaic has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ industry-first 3GPP standard compliant femtocell network solution and Airvana’s 3G HSPA femtocell to provide personalized 3G coverage.

“Femtocells ensure subscribers enjoy the best indoor mobile voice, video and data services, and help offload traffic from the broader 3G network,” said Rick Vergin, chief executive officer of Mosaic Telecom. “In addition to securing higher customer satisfaction, we also expect this implementation to drive data traffic growth in the network, leading to increased average revenue per user (ARPUs).”

“The femtocell mini base station is important in further promoting 3G in rural areas,” said Mike Jurcy, head of channels for Nokia Siemens Networks in North America. “Mosaic Telecom has been a leader in the rural market, delivering top-quality 3G services to its customers, and this implementation will further improve the variety and quality of services, increasing customer loyalty levels and revenue generation.”

“In the past, femtocell deployments have been based on proprietary solutions,” said Amit Jain, vice president, femtocell product management, Airvana. “With the industry’s first 3GPP Release 8 standards based femto CPE device, we are helping the operator break new ground, encouraging an open ecosystem for future growth.”

Femtocells are small cellular access points that use a broadband Internet connection to provide consumers with an enhanced mobile connectivity experience in their premises. The end-to-end solution will comprise the Nokia Siemens Networks 3G Femto Gateway, Operation and Maintenance Server (OMS) and Provisioning Manager. Nokia Siemens Networks’ Value-Added Reseller (VAR), Pario Solutions, will commence the deployment of the solution in the third quarter of 2010.
