Compal Readies Windows, Android and MeeGo Tablets

The world's second-largest contract manufacturer of laptops is spreading its bets on tablet PC operating systems. It is building tablets running Microsoft Windows, Google's Android, and the MeeGo OS backed by Intel and Nokia.

Taiwan's Compal Electronics, which develops and manufactures laptop computers for global PC vendors including Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Acer, has also joined the ranks of companies planning to create its own user interface (UI) and other software to support the tablet market.

"We have a lot of customers that are very interested in tablets," said Ray Chen, president and CEO of Compal, at a news conference in Taipei on Tuesday, adding that "demand is getting better and better because of the iPad."

Compal will have a few tablet PCs in mass production in the third quarter or fourth quarter, he said.

Apple's iPad has had a profound impact on the way companies look at mobile devices, and has spurred the rush to build rival products. Apple said Monday that it has sold 2 million iPads since the device's launch in early April.

Compal plans to invest more in software to boost its tablet business, including creating a UI and working more with Linux software, said Chen. The company, which has focused on computer hardware for decades, now boasts 250 software engineers.

"It's clear that apps are important," he said. The main challenge for tablet PCs going forward will be to become more user-friendly, he added.

Arm Holdings displayed a Compal-made tablet at its press conference on Monday, a device with a 7-inch touchscreen that runs Android and uses Nvidia Tegra chips. The chips have Arm-based processing cores. Compal showed off a few more tablets at its press conference, including a 10-inch tablet, but representatives declined to discuss their specifications.

Compal will also make tablets with Intel's x86-based chips, Chen said.

On Monday, Asustek Computer and Micro-Star International both revealed tablet PCs using Microsoft Windows OSs and one using Google's Android. MSI put its own UI on its Wind Pad 100 tablet.

IDG News Service - A group of chip makers including IBM, Samsung Electronics and Texas Instruments on Thursday unveiled Linaro, a new software-engineering foundation dedicated to improving Linux distributions, including Android, MeeGo and Ubuntu, used in consumer devices.

The new foundation hopes to take the success Linux has seen in large enterprise software and translate that to the consumer world of TV, tablets, smartphones and netbooks, which is dominated by several main OSes, including Windows, Symbian, Blackberry and Apple's iPhone OS.

A total of six companies have pledged to fund the non-profit venture with "tens of millions of dollars" per year, said Tom Lantzsch, interim CEO of Linaro and an executive vice president at Arm Holdings, said at a news conference in Taipei. Arm, Freescale Semiconductor and ST-Ericsson are the other three initial members of the group, which is open for anyone to join.

The member companies will unite their open source engineering resources in Linaro and will contribute to a wide range of open source projects. Linaro will partner with the Linux Foundation to align on core operating principles, according to a statement.

Currently there are around 20 engineers already working at Linaro, but the foundation will soon have over 100, Lantzsch said.

Linaro plans to create developer tools for Linux makers so they can take better advantage of the complex chips made by the founding members of the group, mainly chips with Arm processing cores. The chips are complex because smartphones and other small gadgets require a lot of technology to be work and remain connected to networks and the Web all the time. Chip makers often say software developers could make much better use of the power inside the chips.

Despite its lean towards Arm, the group said it would welcome Intel and that it plans to offer tools for all kinds of processors. The MeeGo OS, which the group highlighted in its news release, was created by Intel and Nokia for small devices and also supports processors including Intel's Atom as well as Arm.

Linaro aims to put out new releases of software tools, kernel and middleware every six months. The software will already be validated for a wide range of chips, which will help companies get their gadgets to market a lot faster.

One example of a project already in place is for fast boot kernel technology, so Linux distributions start up faster on devices.

Linaro is currently seeking a new CEO. Lantzsch was responsible for forming the foundation, but he plans to return full-time to Arm once a replacement is found.

Mobile Digital Television Launch Gives Detroit Automakers Ideal Mobile Video Test Bed

WDIV and WXYZ Among Leading Broadcast TV Stations in the Nation to Transmit Programming to Mobile DTV Devices.

DETROIT -- With the Detroit television market among the leaders in the nation now launching Mobile Digital Television (DTV), product development teams in the automobile industry now have a local resource for testing reception of Mobile DTV -- the groundbreaking new service that delivers favorite broadcast TV programs to Mobile DTV devices including specially-equipped in-vehicle infotainment systems, mobile phones, netbooks and laptops, DVD players, and other devices.

Detroit's Mobile DTV channels on two local TV broadcast stations were officially launched today during a special event sponsored by the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), which represents hundreds of broadcast TV stations throughout the country. In addition to an informative seminar about the technology staged for the benefit of automobile industry executives, today's kickoff event included an in-vehicle demonstration showing a variety of Mobile DTV devices receiving the programs broadcast live from WDIV and WXYZ.

"The introduction of Mobile Digital Television in Detroit changes the broadcast landscape in dramatic and exciting ways. When Mobile DTV consumer devices are widely available, people will be able to take their favorite news, information and entertainment programs with them wherever they go," said Marla Drutz, Vice President and General Manager of WDIV-TV Detroit, the flagship station of Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc., a leading member of the OMVC. "WDIV is proud to be one of the leaders in broadcasting to mobile digital TV devices, and we know our viewers will appreciate taking along our newscasts, weather, sports and their favorite entertainment programs."

"WXYZ is committed to being a trusted source of Detroit-area news and information, whenever and wherever our audience demands it – whether it's on air, online or, with today's announcement, on the go," said Ed Fernandez, the vice president and general manager of WXYZ, the Scripps-owned ABC affiliate in Detroit. "This mobile technology marries the promise of better and faster information for our valued viewers with the potential to help our area's businesses strengthen their marketing programs."

"The launch of Mobile DTV broadcasting in the Detroit market is critical for the success of this exciting new technology, because this is where decisions are made about the future of automotive infotainment systems. Complementing favorite recorded programs offered on DVD, the addition of Mobile DTV to an automobile will mean instantaneous access to local traffic reports, news, developing weather, and of course your passenger's favorite shows. WDIV and WXYZ are taking a leadership role in the broadcast TV industry, and we're delighted to add them to the list of stations around the country now offering Mobile DTV capability," said Anne Schelle, Executive Director of the OMVC, which represents nearly 900 broadcast TV stations throughout the U.S.

Today's OMVC workshop for automotive industry executives was co-sponsored by LG Electronics and Harris Corporation, co-developers of the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard. Harris is the leading provider of mobile TV broadcast equipment, and LG is the leading supplier of mobile DTV receiver chips for automotive and other applications.

The Detroit television market is among the first in the nation to begin transmitting Mobile DTV signals of broadcast programming. Last week, the Open Mobile Video Coalition launched the first-ever Consumer Showcase of Mobile DTV with hundreds of local viewers in the Nation's Capital now experiencing Mobile DTV on specially-equipped cell phones and netbooks with ongoing focus group studies featuring DVD players and mobile receivers equipped to pick up Mobile DTV signals.

The DP570MH mobile receiver is the electronics industry's first portable, battery-operated mobile DTV in the United States that is designed to receive new rugged over-the-air signals being transmitted by local broadcasters as well as display closed captioning information for viewers who rely on text for the full enjoyment of TV programs.

Ideal for Automotive Applications

The new product, which will be available later this year, is ideal for backseat viewing by passengers and the technology can easily be integrated into car video systems such as those demonstrated today in Detroit.

"It's easy to receive the new mobile DTV broadcasts with our new portable DTV, which comes equipped with a built-in antenna and the ability to play DVDs and CDs," said Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA, Inc. "And this technology can be easily integrated into rear-seat screens as well."

A First for Mobile Viewers

Ideal for reception of Mobile DTV any time, virtually anywhere, and at any speed, the DP570MH Mobile DTV offers the flexibility of both over-the-air reception and the convenience of built-in DVD playback. Equipped with stereo speakers and a 7-inch wide screen to display crystal clear digital TV images.

The DP570MH comes equipped to play DVD movie discs and audio CDs, and it can also display .JPG photos and play WMA music files from its USB2.0 connection. The Mobile Digital Television comes equipped with two earphone jacks so that more than one passenger can enjoy Mobile DTV shows or movies in the back seat of the car, or on a train.

Equipped with a removable battery that powers the device for up to 2.5 hours in TV mode or up to 4.5 hours during DVD playback, the device includes both AC and Auto power adaptors. The DP570MH Portable Television with integrated DVD player will be available later this year at a suggested retail price of $249.

Chips Available for In-Car Infotainment Systems

Co-developer of the technology at the heart of the Mobile DTV standard, LG began mass production of the critical component for Mobile DTV reception – the LG2160A integrated circuit (IC) chip – a year ago. The latest version, the LG2161R single chip design that includes both the tuner and demodulator, is much smaller – only seven millimeters square – and it consumes less power than earlier versions, supports various interfaces and provides improved performance.

This key component of automotive mobile DTV receivers already can be found in a variety of new products being introduced by various manufacturers this year for mobile DTV, from laptop USB accessory receivers to netbooks with integrated mobile DTV tuners and other products.

Standardized by the Advanced Television Systems Committee and formally adopted as the mobile DTV standard last October, the new Mobile DTV standard allows broadcasters to use a portion of the existing 19.4 Megabit-per-second DTV channel capacity to transmit data with extremely robust characteristics suitable for mobile, pedestrian and handheld applications. The mobile DTV signal is also compatible with 8-VSB DTV, which was also developed by Zenith, LG's U.S. research and development lab.

New Sprint Campaign Links Iconic "Firsts" with America's First 4G Phone, HTC EVOTM 4G

Tech-Savvy Sprint Ad Invites Consumers to Make History with First True 4G Experiences on the Sprint 4G Network.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --Sprint (NYSE:S), the first national wireless carrier to offer a 4G phone, HTC EVO(TM) 4G, launched an integrated marketing campaign to support the phone's nationwide availability. The campaign links iconic "firsts" with HTC EVO 4G, which goes on sale nationwide on June 4.

The integrated campaign includes TV, print, online and direct-mail elements that position Sprint as the first national carrier in America with a 4G phone and 4G network. Initial print ads highlight key HTC EVO 4G features and attributes, such as live video streaming to the Web and the phone's mobile hotspot capability, which allows connections for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices. Subsequent out-of-home advertising, including ads seen on billboards, street furniture, bus shelters, transit, and mall kiosks will feature headlines and copy that leverage Sprint's ongoing "Now Network" marketing campaign. For instance, "First Isn't Later. It's Now" and "EVO, the First 4G Phone."

In 30- and 60-second TV spots, "Firsts," a voiceover underscores the breakthrough nature of Sprint 4G's rollout by stating that, "First resets everything." The spot's visuals showcase a succession of inventions through time - the wheel, the train, the rotary phone, the camera - culminating in Sprint's delivery of the nation's first dual-mode 3G/4G phone.

"Sprint is leading the evolution to 4G and this campaign reinforces our 4G leadership position while highlighting what consumers can do with this incredible phone, whether it's on 3G or 4G," said Bill Morgan, senior vice president of Corporate Marketing, Sprint. "There have been a number of notable 'firsts' in our country's history and just like many of those innovations Sprint is reshaping how we live, work and play with HTC EVO 4G."

One element of the campaign invites consumers to participate in history by capturing, sharing and ultimately bragging online about a variety of 4G firsts: the first tweet at 4G speed, the 4G first wedding vows streamed live, or the first photo of an eight-person 4G hotspot. EVO 4G users who are the first to post specific 4G experiences receive virtual badges validating their submission of 4G "firsts" for posting to their Web site or other online social networking space. More details are available at www.sprint.com/firsts.

With the launch of EVO 4G, Sprint customers will be able to enjoy capabilities they have never experienced before with a new video chat service from Qik. The two-way voice and video capability will be available as an upgrade to the preloaded Qik app on HTC EVO 4G to enable conversational, interactive, real-time sharing between mobile devices or from mobile-to-desktop.1

HTC EVO 4G provides access to unprecedented capabilities and features the latest version of the increasingly popular Android platform, Android 2.1, offering more than 35,000 apps. Among the phone's other features:

* Two cameras - an 8.0 megapixel auto-focus camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera.
* Mobile video chat, so you and your children can see each other when you say goodnight while away on a business trip.
* Simultaneous voice and data in 4G and certain Wi-Fi coverage areas, so you can look at a seating chart while dialing in your order for theater tickets.
* Super-fast 1GHz Qualcomm(R) Snapdragon(TM) processor, ensuring a smooth and quick movement within phone menus whether in 3G or 4G service areas.
* As a new way to search with pictures instead of words, Google Goggles(TM) works with everything from books, DVDs and barcodes to landmarks, logos, artwork and wine labels.
* A custom Web browser is optimized for the large 4.3-inch display for a rich Internet experience.

Created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, the new campaign builds on last year's award-winning Sprint "Now Network" push. That effort, also created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, recognized that the world has changed, and Sprint's mobile phones offer an experience closer to that of having a PC in your hand. The campaign extends this idea by alerting consumers that Sprint now is putting mobile broadband in consumers' hands for an even faster, richer multimedia experience. The new advertisements also pay subtle homage to Sprint's impressive legacy of technology "firsts": its launch of the world's first Public Data Network, its history-making move as the first carrier to offer commercial Internet access, and its boundary-breaking push as the first wireless carrier to complete a nationwide 3G 1X upgrade.

HTC EVO 4G will be available in all Sprint retail channels, including Sprint.com and national retail partners, RadioShack, Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Sprint will price the award-winning device at $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate (taxes excluded) with a new line activation or eligible upgrade on a select service plan with Premium Data add-on. Pre-registration is available now at www.sprint.com/evo.

In order to provide the best experience, HTC EVO 4G will use Sprint's industry-leading Everything Data or Business Advantage Messaging and Data plans, which include, while on the Sprint network, unlimited Web, texting and calling to every mobile in America with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM. Everything Data plans start at $69.99 per month. A required $10 Premium Data add-on will allow customers to take advantage of all HTC EVO 4G features.

Additionally, an optional pricing add-on will turn HTC EVO 4G into a mobile hotspot, connecting up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptops, gaming devices and digital cameras, simultaneously at 4G speeds where available and at 3G speeds anywhere on the Sprint 3G network for just $29.99 per month - half the monthly cost of the current Mobile Broadband plan (pricing excludes surcharges and taxes).

With the Sprint Free Guarantee, customers can take advantage of HTC EVO 4G for 30 days. If not completely satisfied, customers may deactivate service and return the device within 30 days to have the opportunity to receive a full refund.2

Sprint 4G offers a faster wireless experience than any other U.S. national wireless carrier, and Sprint is the only national carrier offering wireless 4G service today in 33 markets. Sprint 4G delivers download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G3,giving HTC EVO 4G the fastest data speeds of any U.S. wireless device available today.

As the first national wireless carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology, Sprint made history by launching 4G in Baltimore in September 2008. Today, Sprint 4G covers 41 million people and expects to have up to 120 million people covered by the end of 2010.

In 2010, Sprint expects to launch service in multiple markets, including Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. Sprint is harnessing the power of 4G as the majority shareholder of Clearwire, the independent company that is building the WiMAX network. Sprint is the only national wireless carrier to offer 4G services on the Clearwire WiMAX network. For more information, visit www.sprint.com/4G.
