Google to Launch Digital Books by Early Summer

Google Inc. will begin selling digital books as early as late June or July, a company representative said Tuesday, jumping into a battle that already involves Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc.

Chris Palma, Google's manager for strategic-partner development, announced the timetable at a panel on Google's plans sponsored by the Book Industry Study Group in New York. The event, held at Random House's Manhattan offices, was entitled: "The Book on Google: Is the Future of Publishing in the Cloud?"

Google has been discussing its vision for distributing books online for several years and for months has been evangelizing its new service, called Google Editions. The company is hoping to distinguish it from offerings from incumbents like Amazon by allowing users to access books from a broad range of websites using a broad array of devices. Amazon.com's digital book business is largely focused on its Kindle e-reader and Kindle software that runs on some other select hardware.

The project is Google's attempt to crack into the market of distributing current and backlist works.

Jeff Trachtenberg discusses Google plan to start selling digital books this summer, setting the stage for a battle of the online behemoth booksellers. Plus, Apple attracts antitrust scrutiny from regulators and Congress drafts a web-ad privacy bill.

Google says users will be able to buy digital copies of books they discover through its book-search service. It will also allow book retailers—even independent shops—to sell Google Editions on their own sites, taking the bulk of the revenue. Google is still deciding whether it will follow the model where publishers set the retail price or where Google sets retail prices.

Publishers have yet to publicly commit to participate in the service. Yet many continue to cheer the idea as potentially significant new opportunity to increase the sale of digital books, since even the smallest independent bookstore will have access to a sophisticated electronic-book sales service with a vast selection of titles.

"This levels the retail playing field," said Evan Schnittman, vice president of global business development for Oxford University Press. "And as a publisher, what I like is that I won't have to think about audiences based on devices. This is an electronic product that consumers can get anywhere as long as they have a Google account."

He said Google Editions will also be critical because it represents "the ultimate test" of whether the ability to search, find and instantly buy content will generate significant gains in revenue. "This tears down barriers," he added.

On a separate front, Google has been attempting to win rights to distribute millions of out-of-print books through its digital book settlement with authors and publishers. U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin is expected to rule in that case soon.

Sony Ericsson files application to trademark the word 'Nexus' in the EU

Sony Ericsson has filed an application with the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union to trademark the word 'Nexus'.

The move is interesting, considering that Sony Ericsson had claimed at its MWC press conference in February that it had been approached by Google to create a device in the Nexus series Android smartphone but Sony Ericsson passed the offer considering that they were not an OEM company and would always launch a phone under its own brand.

So what is this application, filed on April 27 all about? The application indicates that Nexus won't be a phone but rather a UI, very much like HTC's Sense UI or even Sony Ericsson's own Timescape and Mediascape interfaces.

An excerpt from the application: "Graphical user interface software for mobile devices; and software for enhancing the user experience in a mobile device or worldwide web interface."

The only thing that beats us is why Sony Ericsson could not come up with a better name, something that's not already taken?

Motorola MT720 Targets China’s Business Users

We just happened to be checking out Motorola's website this evening when we stumbled upon another Android-based handset. You're looking at the MT720, which is an OPhone flavored version of Android. Somehow this model flew under our radar. After a quick look around some of our favorite sites, everybody else seemed to have missed it, too.

As Motorola puts it, this smart phone targets China's high-end business users and features a resistive touch screen for writing characters. In terms of hardware, the MT720 is identical to the MT710 in every way. In fact, the only difference we could find between the two is that the MT720 features Flash Lite in the browser whereas the other does not. It also appears that the MT720 has some sort of a leather carry case/cover attached to the phone.

The meat and potatoes specs:

* Marvell PXA310 624 MHZ processor
* 256MB ROM, 256MB RAM
* 3.7-inch" 480 x 854 (FWVGA) resistive touch screen
* 5 megapixel camera w/ autofocus, dual LED flash
* VGA secondary camera
* OPhone 1.5
* Ambient light sensor
* Assisted GPS
* Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
* 3.5mm headphone jack
* CMMB mobile TV

We'd like to see Motorola, or any other handset maker, bring a resistive touch screen to the US, if not only to provide additional choices to potential customers.

Motorola posts profit, smartphone sales rise

Motorola Inc reported a surprising quarterly profit on better-than-expected demand for its higher-margin smartphones, so far vindicating its strategy of relying on Google Inc's Android software system.

Strength in Motorola's other units including network equipment and fewer sales of unprofitable, cheaper phones also bolstered the company's profit.

Motorola also forecast current-quarter earnings per share in a range that could beat average analysts' estimates.

Its shares rose 3 percent on Thursday and have gained 18 percent since January as more investors were willing to bet on its turnaround despite stiff competition from rivals like Apple Inc's iPhone.

Now the market is set to become even more crowded with the entrance of Hewlett-Packard Co, which on Wednesday announced a deal to buy Palm Inc.

"I think (Motorola is) doing the best they can in a very competitive market," RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue said, adding that investors were encouraged that Motorola was accelerating its exit from less advanced phones.

Some analysts said Motorola's share rise may have been muted by the Palm news. Sanjay Jha, Motorola's co-chief executive said the Palm deal may change the market dynamic but wouldn't alter Motorola's task of making stand-out phones.

Jha told an analyst conference call that the phone unit would post its first profit in years in the fourth quarter.

The mobile devices division still posted an operating loss of $192 million in the first quarter, but this was much narrower than its loss of $545 million a year earlier.

While Motorola smartphone sales rose to 2.3 million from 2 million in the fourth quarter its overall phone sales fell to 8.5 million phones from 12 million in the last quarter.

This was short of the average forecast of 10.2 million from nine analysts contacted by Reuters but Jha said the sales decline made the unit's progress all the more impressive.

"To see that contraction in shipments ... and yet improve our operating loss (in mobile phones) is a hell of a feat" Sanjay Jha, Motorola's Co-chief executive who heads mobile devices told Reuters.

"I see this as a sign we're turning the mobile devices business around and making great headway in probably the most important segment of the mobile devices market which is smartphones," he said.

In the global market Motorola is expected to rank seventh in the first quarter, behind Nokia, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

But Jha estimated that it held its third place ranking in the North American smartphone market, putting it behind only iPhone and BlackBerry from Research In Motion.

He said that while total phone volumes would decline again this quarter, smartphones sales will increase sequentially, resulting in an improvement in operating losses.

Jha predicted growth for this quarter as Motorola's distribution expands. He also predicted that its new phones would do well, particularly in China.

NORTH AMERICA AND CHINA

It posted a first-quarter profit of $69 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with a loss of $231 million, or 10 cents a share, in the same quarter the year before.

Excluding items, profit per share was 2 cents compared with average analyst expectations for a loss of 1 cent per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

As well as strong phone sales in North America and China Motorola said the profit was helped by a better-than-expected profit in Motorola's network equipment business, which increased operating earnings to $112 million from $62 million in the same quarter the year before.

Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton said some investors expected worse after a weak report from Nokia.

"It was a good quarter in the face of cautious expectations," he said, adding that Motorola's cash generation of $455 million was a good sign ahead of its plan to separate into two companies early next year.

Revenue fell 6 percent from a year ago to $5.04 billion, and compared with Wall St expectations for $5.098 billion.

Motorola forecast current-quarter earnings per share of 3 cents to 5 cents, including expenses for stock-based compensation and amortization of intangibles. That compares with the average Street forecast of 3 cents per share according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company tweaked its target for 2010 smartphone sales to a range of 12 million to 14 million from its previous guidance of 11 million to 14 million. Motorola shares rose 21 cents, or 3 percent, to $7.13 on New York Stock Exchange.

Skype commands 13 percent of international phone calls

Facebook is getting all the press with the high membership numbers but those numbers come close to the numbers that Skype has. What is even more impressive though is the effect that it is having on international call minutes.

In recent report by TeleGeography Research Skype-to-Skype calls accounted f or 13% of all international call minutes in 2009. Out of the 406 billion international call minutes a total of 54 billion were used by Skype calls. In 2008 Skype only accounted for 8 percent of international call minutes which amounted to 33 billion call minutes.

“Skype is now the largest provider of cross border communications in the world, by far,” Beckert said. “The proliferation of alternatives to telephone calls—including Skype for mobile devices, and Google’s gradual entry into the voice market—will present ever greater challenges to international carriers.”

via Techtified

I know I have been a Skype user for many years and while I’m not totally surprised with the fact that it has 520 million users the number of call minutes is quite an eye-opener.

iSoft #36

Mobile-review have posted a review of iSoft. Here is their final impression.

Today’s iSoft highlighted only one application, but what a good app it is! Some small drawbacks are present though. For instance, you have found the station and added it to the Favorites while player is launching - in this case you may not see the station name. You have to delete it from Favorites and then when playback begins add it again.

As for the rest this internet-player looks good and boasts wonderful functionality, it doesn’t devour the battery, works in a bit strange, but nonetheless minimized mode; music sounds good, the connection is fast.

I strongly recommend this app to internet-radio fans. It is the best application available at the moment IMHO.

Nokia Free Navigation - the 'making of' video

The campaign idea is about the celebration of EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, finding their way to reach the people and places that matter most. We take delight in the most authentic, playful and at times quirky modes of transport that humans use passionately in their everyday connecting people stories.

This video gives others a glimpse of behind the scenes footage illustrating a little more about our happy navigators and locations of their journey. It is bigger and more anthemic as we show diversity - in locations, vehicles, people, emotions - technology/modern vs traditional, craft, familiar vs unfamiliar.

LG Mini GD880 Review

PhoneArena reviews the LG Mini GD880 - probably the smallest phone out there with a 3.2-inch screen. The Mini has a unique boxy design, which looks great and uses some high-quality materials. The non-smart software running on the Mini looks pretty nice, but unfortunately features quite some lag, which may ruin the experience at times.

[PRJ] GVV 0.2 - Google Visual Voicemail [5/1]

The lack of a Google visual voicemail for Winmo has pissed me off for long enough, so now I've take it upon myself to resolve this great injustice.

Submitted for your enjoyment GVV:

Details:
Google visual voicemail is a semi-offline client for Google voice. You can view and play your voice messages as well as mark them read/unread and delete them.

When updating, message text is downloaded to a local cache that can be viewed at any time. Audio is downloaded the first time you click play and is stored for future use.

You must update manually by going to menu->update. If you need automatic VM checking, let me know and I'll try to get it into a future version.

GVV has been tested on a Touch Pro 2 and a Treo Pro, all resolutions should be supported, let me know if you experience layout problems.

You must have .netcf 3.5.

Want something else? You know what to do.

Instructions:

1. Install cab.
2. On first launch you'll get a "could not log in" error. Click ok, click menu and click settings.
3. For username, enter your full gmail address (ie. you@gmail.com) and for password your password.
4. Click save (click ok on the popup) then click cancel.
5. Click menu and click update.
6. On the first run it'll probably complain about a missing file, click ok.
7. Enjoy.

Known Issues:
On rare occasions I've seen COM errors when trying to talk to WMP and Exceptions (Outofmemory usually) from SenseSDK.

SenseSDK makes the transcript item too long and may cut off some transcript text. This seems to be a bug in the way the item is designed, I don't think I can fix it.

Deleting messages is quirky...
When deleting a message very quickly after starting the app, the cache xml may still be locked. This shows an error message and causes the message to go to trash online but stay in the local cache. I'm looking into this.
Also I can't seem to remove items at will with this version of SenseSDK, deleted items will be marked as such but will not disappear until the next update.

What's Spirit?

* Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.
* Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
* If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

Requirements

* Any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2.
* An activated device: one not stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen.
* Any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1).
* Syncing with iTunes before trying this is highly recommended. (An issue has been reported where Spirit deletes the photos on the device. I will investigate this; in the meantime, please make sure your photos are backed up.)

Note: On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia's appearance is not final.)
Download
Windows Mac OS X

Other Stuff

* Update (May 3): I've updated the jailbreak tool. It no longer deletes photos (sorry!) and should resolve the issue with error code c0000005. (If you still get that error with the new version, try setting compatibility mode to Windows 95.)

Mobileye(R) Licenses MIPS32(R) 1004K(TM) Coherent Processing System for Advanced Driver Assistance SoCs

- MIPS(R) Cores Provide Reliability and Real-time Response Needed for Automotive Applications.

MIPS Technologies, Inc. ( MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, announced that Mobileye, the global pioneer and leader in vision-based collision prevention systems, licensed its multi-threaded multiprocessing MIPS32(R) 1004K(TM) Coherent Processing System (CPS). Mobileye will incorporate the 1004K CPS in its next generation EyeQ(TM) vision-based SoC for use in driver assistance systems. Mobileye already uses multi-threaded MIPS32 34K(TM) cores in its current generation EyeQ2(TM) SoC. Development of the third generation SoC will begin immediately.

According to Ziv Aviram, CEO, Mobileye, "We are having great success using MIPS in our EyeQ2(TM) product, which has been adopted by several top-tier suppliers and car manufacturers. We are pleased to reaffirm our commitment to MIPS for our next generation product. The EyeQ3(TM) will be the ultimate driver assistance system for a wide range of vertical markets. With MIPS, we get a winning architecture that provides the reliability, high performance and flexibility needed for automotive applications. MIPS Technologies' unparalleled service and support will help us get our next generation product to market quickly at the lowest possible cost."

"Multi-threaded 34K cores helped us achieve a 600% performance gain in the EyeQ2(TM) over the previous generation, and we are pleased to target even greater performance in the EyeQ3(TM), with a combination of the 1004K CPS and Mobileye's innovative Vector Microcode Processors (VMP)," said Elchanan Rushinek, vice president of engineering, Mobileye. "As we did when we selected MIPS cores for the EyeQ2(TM), we exhaustively benchmarked the new MIPS cores against the competition. We need extreme real-time performance, and we found the 1004K CPS to be a superior solution. With MIPS, our customers can be assured of responsiveness and reliability to help reduce accidents and make roads safer."

"MIPS Technologies has a strong presence in the automotive market, with significant share in mobile infotainment and a growing presence in the automotive control and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) markets. ADAS systems entail advanced applications processing, reliability, and real time response for applications such as collision avoidance and driver safety," said Michael J. Palma, IDC senior research analyst for consumer semiconductors.

"Leading automotive companies are looking to Mobileye for technologies that not only have the ability to change lives, but save them," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. "We are pleased to work closely with Mobileye as it continues to develop advanced driver assistance solutions. The MIPS architecture is a great fit for automotive safety and infotainment applications, and we look forward to expanding our presence in these high-growth sectors of the automotive market."

Mobileye's family of EyeQ(TM) Vision Processors and its broad range of algorithms for mono-camera driver assistance systems target vehicle active safety applications such as lane departure warning, vehicle detection, pedestrian detection, intelligent headlight control and traffic sign recognition.

About the MIPS32 1004K CPS

The 1004K Coherent Processing System (CPS) is the industry's first multi-threaded multiprocessor IP core. Incorporating multi-threading in each core in a coherent multi-core architecture enables the 1004K multiprocessor to surpass the performance of multi-core systems based on single-threaded processor cores. This performance boost essentially is "free" in both hardware and software, as the additional hardware threads in the cores are minimal in size relative to a typical SoC design, and multi-threading makes use of the same Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) versions of operating systems and software programming models as coherent multi-core platforms. Leveraging the multi-threading capability, the 1004K CPS achieves over 2.9 Coremark/MHz per core, putting it among the highest scores available in the database of tested cores on the Coremark.org website. Couple this performance with the small size and low-power implementation, and the 1004K series provides one of the most performance/power efficient solutions in the industry.

Consumer Reports' Initial 3D TV Tests Find Images Pop, But There's Not Much to Watch - Yet

Most consumers should wait for prices to drop and more content to become available.

YONKERS, N.Y. -- There's been a lot of hype surrounding the launch of 3D TV, but is the new technology worth buying right away? Consumer Reports tested several new sets in its labs—the first hands-on evaluation outside the manufacturers' facilities—and found that the sets live up to their advance billing, but the average consumer shouldn't rush out to buy one.

The results of Consumer Reports' tests of two Samsung LCD sets and a Panasonic plasma TV with 3D capability are impressive. Full results are published in the June issue on newsstands May 4 and online at www.ConsumerReports.org. The 3D images had excellent depth, color, and high-def details, creating a compelling 3D picture as good as a movie theater.

However, for consumers who are satisfied with their current HDTV and aren't burning to have the latest technology, Consumer Reports recommends waiting to buy. The price of 3DTVs and Blu-ray players is likely to drop, and there should be more 3D content to watch in time.

"Blu-ray discs with 3D content are just arriving, and while 3D broadcasts are starting up it will be a while before there are many of them," said Paul Reynolds, electronics editor, Consumer Reports. "Though there isn't a huge price premium for the TVs, a 3D setup isn't inexpensive. For the sets we tested, you should figure on paying about $3,000 for the TV, Blu-ray player, and glasses for a family of four."

What was tested

Consumer Reports evaluated two 46-inch Samsung LCD sets with edge LED backlighting, the UN46C7000, $2,600, and the UN46C8000, $2,800, and the 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50VT20 plasma set, $2,500.

The sets were connected to each company's new 3D Blu-ray player, the Samsung BD-C6900 and Panasonic DMP-BDT300, each $400. Both Blu-ray players worked on all of the sets, but the glasses are brand-specific, and don't work with other TVs. Consumer Reports testers watched the same Blu-ray 3D disc on all three TVs.

What was found

All three sets delivered eye-catching three dimensional effects in full 1080p resolution and they also provided an acceptably bright picture, important because 3D glasses can make images appear dimmer. The Samsung LCD TVs displayed subtle ghosting of 3D images to varying degrees in different scenes. Such ghosting, technically called "crosstalk," indicates that the images for each eye aren't being kept completely separate, as they should be. The ghosting was distracting when visible and it detracted from the 3D effect. Also, when testers tilted their heads, as if lying on the couch, the picture dimmed a bit on both Samsungs.

On the Samsung 7000 model, testers also noticed some cloudiness caused by uneven backlighting in darker scenes, which was a bit distracting. Testers were able to minimize cloudiness on the 8000 by lowering the backlight and using the "smart LED" dimming feature. Like most LCD sets, both sets have a fairly narrow viewing angle, so picture quality degraded as the viewer moved off center.

Despite these minor glitches, Consumer Reports found that the Samsung sets provided excellent picture detail and satisfying colors and contrast with 3D and regular HD content. The glasses were lighter and more comfortable to wear than the Panasonic's.

The Panasonic plasma displayed negligible crosstalk and no cloudiness, adding to the realism of the 3D effect. The viewing angle is virtually unlimited and testers saw no change in image brightness when they tilted their heads. Picture detail and black levels were excellent. The Panasonic model might have the best motion resolution of any flat-panel TV CR has ever tested. Detail remained sharp and clear even in test patterns designed to reveal blur in fast-moving images.

Consumer Reports will continue to review 3D technology as more TVs hit the marketplace. For detailed test results, videos, and updates on 3D, visit www.ConsumerReports.org.

Designed by HTC exclusively for T-Mobile, the myTouch 3G Slide features a 3.4-inch HVGA touch-screen display with virtual keyboard as well as a roomy, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Less than 15mm thick, the elegant design slides easily into your pocket proving that Android brains don’t have to come in a sci-fi box. The myTouch 3G Slide also features a 5-megapixel camera, a music player with a pre-installed 8GB microSD memory card, and enhanced video capabilities to make it easy for users to record and share pictures and videos, whether via e-mail, MMS or one-click upload to sites such as YouTube™ and Picasa™.

The device’s powerful mobile data experience is supported by fast data speeds via Wi-Fi and T-Mobile’s nationwide 3G network, which is getting even faster this year as T-Mobile upgrades its network with the latest wireless technology.

The myTouch 3G Slide is expected to be available in June, exclusively from T-Mobile USA in three colors — black, white or red. Customers can visit http://mytouch.t-mobile.com for more information.

Global leader in data warehouse, analytic and monitoring appliances turns to Coveo to further improve customer satisfaction and customer self-service, and increase call center efficiencies.

CHICAGO and SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- From the 2010 Technology Services World Conference, Coveo, a leading provider of customer information access and enterprise search solutions, announced the addition of Netezza Corporation to its global customer base. Netezza, a leader in data warehouse, analytic and monitoring appliances, will implement Coveo's Customer Information Access Solution for Contact Centers and Customer Self-Service, to advance its online customer self-service experience and increase efficiencies across its contact center operations.

"Our award winning customer service and support is a key differentiator for Netezza and we look forward to taking it to new heights with Coveo," said Tricia Cotter, Sr. Vice President of Operations at Netezza. "We learned about Coveo when they launched their Customer Information Access Solutions and we were intrigued by the concept of not moving data, and yet providing our contact center agents and customers with access to real-time, relevant information to solve issues and answer questions more quickly. This is an effective way to leverage the tremendous infrastructure we've built to serve our customers, and increase our service levels while reducing costs."

View from Verizon Wireless
“People across Vermont are increasingly relying on smartphones and 3G apps to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go,” said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. “The $2.6 billion we’ve invested into our New England network has kept us ahead of consumer trends, provided our customers a 3G advantage and underscored our belief that any mobile device is only as good as the network it runs on. Proactive and sustained investment has made Verizon Wireless the 3G leader in New England and nationwide.”

Harnessing the Capabilities of a Robust 3G Network
Verizon Wireless’ 3G network powers many leading mobile multimedia services, including:

* Mobile Broadband Internet Access: Notebook computer users can access e-mail, download files and browse the Internet at broadband speed, downloading a one megabyte e-mail attachment – the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file – in about eight seconds and uploading it in less than 13 seconds.
* V CAST Video: V CAST multimedia services offer customers the ability to play cutting-edge 3D games and stream video clips straight to their phones, as well as to watch dozens of on-demand videos, including breaking news, weather, sports highlights and the hottest entertainment clips.

Sustained Wireless Investment
The company has invested more than $59 billion since its inception to increase the wireless voice and data coverage of its national network and to add new 3G services like Mobile Broadband and V CAST. As the carrier with America's largest and most reliable wireless network, Verizon Wireless cell sites in New England provide 3G wireless data connectivity.
Engineering America’s Most Reliable Wireless Network
The company’s ‘America’s most reliable wireless network’ reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. By traversing more than one million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets in high-population areas – the equivalent of two roundtrips to the moon or 40 trips around the world – the test men and women confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless' network and the networks of other carriers.

Sprint Partners with 'The Oprah Winfrey Show'and DoSomething.org on Nationwide Driver Safety Campaigns

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--Five years after creating a free interactive program - Focus on Driving - to educate teenagers on the dangers of driver distraction, Sprint (NYSE:S) is expanding its mission to support two nationwide programs that educate teenagers and adults of all ages on the importance of safe driving in today's wireless world.

With support from Sprint, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and DoSomething.org have created initiatives to educate wireless users on how safe driving habits can protect themselves, their passengers and others on the roads:

* "The Oprah Winfrey Show" "No Phone Zone" Campaign: Created in January 2010, Sprint is sponsoring the "No Phone Zone" campaign's continued efforts, which include a new public service announcement running on-air, in print and online. In addition, the "Oprah" show hosted its first national "No Phone Zone" Day on April 30 to help put an end to distracted driving. "No Phone Zone" Day included a live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and viewing rallies in Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. in a large-scale effort to honor victims of distracted driving, educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving, and activate Americans to make a difference in their communities. Sprint provided support for "No Phone Zone" Day and in the coming months will continue to spread the "No Phone Zone" message.
* DoSomething.org and Thumb Wars: Launched on April 19, Thumb Wars is a nationwide campaign to educate drivers between the age of 16 and 25 on the dangers of texting while driving and to encourage them to make others aware of this important issue. With support from the Sprint Foundation, DoSomething.org has a goal of engaging and educating more than 100,000 young drivers through the Thumb Wars campaign by the close of summer. The campaign features a PSA with Joel McHale and Ken Jeong from NBC's Community engaging in a Thumb War. Additionally, young people can order Thumb Socks, which prevent them and their friends from texting and driving, and enter a bumper sticker design contest, all through the ThumbWars.org site. Thumb socks cannot be bought. Young people can order them by sharing how they plan to use them to spread the word about not texting while driving.

"At Sprint, we believe that education is an effective means to encourage wireless consumers to practice safe driving habits," said Ralph Reid, vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility for Sprint. "With texting while driving making today's teens four times more likely to cause a car crash, we hope initiatives such as these will help wireless users take an active role in making driver safety an obligation, not an afterthought."

Sprint customers can show their support for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" "No Phone Zone" campaign by downloading the Oprah Mobile application on any of Sprint's AndroidTM and Blackberry(R),Palm PreTM and Palm PixiTM devices, or by texting "NPZ" to 30644 to take the "No Phone Zone" pledge. Standard text message and data rates may apply.

DoSomething.org and Sprint have also compiled a list of driver safety tips that parents and teens can utilize to practice safe driving behavior.To learn more about Sprint's efforts to educate drivers of all ages on the importance of safe driving, visit the Sprint Focus on Driving Web site.
