Nokia N8 in focus: An interview with Damian Dinning

Gsmarena have posted an article about the Nokia N8.

Here is a summary of the article:
It's been a nice and informative interview for us. We really hope you paid attention but if you haven't, here are the main points that deserve recapping.

* Nokia N8 sensor size is 1/1.83”, which is bigger (and better) than most regular digicams.
* The flash power is roughly comparable to that provided by the Nokia N82.
* Adding a lens cover on the Nokia N8 would have increased the thickness of the camera part. The heavily scratch resistant cover glass should compensate. A built-in ND filter is used instead of a variable aperture system. Neutral Density (ND) filter is a clear filter that reduces the intensity of light without causing changes in hue or color rendition. Thus the presence of an ND filter in front of the lens allows the camera to shoot in bright ambient light without reducing (stopping down) the aperture.
* H.264 encoding is used for the video capturing and AAC for the stereo audio. The video is currently encoded at around 9mbits/sec (might change), the stereo audio is encoded at 128 kbits/sec with 48kHz sampling.
* Video lacks continuous autofocus and use an Active Hyper Focal Distance system to make sure everything is in focus. That way they lose macro capabilities of the video camera but gain fool-proof focus reliability during video recording.
* Nokia N8 won't support special video recording modes such as 120fps high-speed video or time-lapse recordings.
* The HDMI connection allows both videos and still photos to be viewed up to 1280x720 resolution and supports Dolby 5.1 Surround sound (if the source multimedia offers it).

Pay TV Revenue Will Grow 7% to Exceed $312 Billion in 2010

Pay TV market growth slowed in 2009 due to the recession. However, 2010 is expected to be a better year as operators have been signing up new subscribers, and existing subscribers are migrating to premium channels and advanced services. “As a result of the positive market outlook for pay TV,” says ABI Research practice director Jason Blackwell, “global pay TV revenue will net more than $312 billion for cable and telecom carriers in 2010.”

Among the different pay TV platforms, telco TV service revenue is growing the fastest as broadband penetration and Internet speeds ramp up. For example, Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV subscriber base essentially doubled within a year, to one million. As fiber broadband deployment expands its footprint, operators will have the opportunity to offer High Definition IPTV that should help to boost ARPU and service revenue. ABI Research anticipates that telco TV service revenue will top $17 billion in 2010.

In terms of telco TV service revenue, Western Europe captures the largest market share with 59%. North America and Asia Pacific are the second and third largest telco TV markets. In the Asia Pacific region, telco TV service revenue is expected to grow rapidly during the next few years. In 2009, Asia Pacific telco TV service revenue comprised 10% of the total market, and it is expected to achieve 25% by 2015.

Pay TV operators are competing to raise ARPU and lower churn. Many operators are upgrading programming packages and steadily introducing high definition TV services. “Pay TV operators need to aggressively promote the purchase of HDTV set top boxes in order to lift ARPU,” notes Research Associate Khin Sandi Lynn. “This does not have to come through subsidies. Carriers could do a better job of promoting the benefits of HD for the end-user viewing experience. Furthermore there is the promise of 3D TV. At present many users are not clear what the benefits are.”

ABI Research has recently completed a quarterly update of its “Pay-TV ARPU and Revenue Database” which provides historical and forecast data for ARPU, and service revenue forecasts for satellite, cable and telco TV.

New online tool helps businesses manage Skype deployments

Skype Manager enables companies of all sizes to harness the power of Skype for communications and collaboration.

LUXEMBOURG — Skype announced the launch of Skype Manager, a web-based management tool that enables businesses to harness the power of Skype to achieve greater communications flexibility, cost savings and control over the use of Skype in their organization. Skype Manager replaces Skype’s Business Control Panel, which was originally developed to provide small and mid-size businesses the ability to organize Skype usage among their employees.

Skype Manager (skype.com/go/skypemanager) makes it simple for businesses of all sizes to deploy Skype efficiently and effectively in the workplace. It incorporates a centralized payment system and real-time analysis and reporting capabilities. It also gives companies the ability to manage Skype user accounts across an organization and assign Skype features through an administration dashboard.

“We looked at how Skype is being used in the workplace and specifically designed Skype Manager to make it easier for businesses to centrally manage how Skype is used, managed and paid for by an organization,” said David Gurle, VP and General Manager of Skype for Business. “We want to empower businesses to exploit the full power and value of Skype so they receive all the benefits of enhanced collaboration and cost savings.”
Key features of Skype Manager

* Skype usage within a company is centralized. The company’s Skype administrator can set up as many individual Skype accounts as required for its employees and create additional accounts as needed.
* Skype Credit is purchased and allocated by the administrator, who also assigns features to users, such as online numbers, subscriptions, voice mail and other options.
* Renewal of Skype Credit and subscriptions can be automated.
* The flexible reporting dashboard enables real-time analysis of Skype usage across the organization, as well as monthly spending reports, at company, department or individual employee level.

Skype Manager can also be used to quickly and easily set up and manage Skype for SIP (skype.com/go/sip), a solution for connecting a company’s existing SIP-enabled PBX to Skype. Companies with legacy TDM PBXs or Key Systems can also use a third-party gateway that has been certified as interoperable to connect to Skype for SIP. This way, Skype can be used to enable employees to communicate more efficiently by directing their outbound calls through their existing communications system to mobile phones and landlines around the world via Skype – right from their desk phones. It also allows businesses to receive inbound calls from Skype users into their existing communications system where they can be handled or directed in the same way as any other inbound call.

Skype Manager is being offered as a free trial until the end of October 2010. Skype for SIP is currently available in Open Beta to all businesses.

Skype enables businesses to enhance collaboration and productivity. Today, it is estimated that 37% of Skype users use Skype for business purposes . Skype is well-known for free voice and video calling between Skype users around the world. It is also used for instant messaging, screen sharing and sending files, low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles around the world, the ability to use Skype on mobile phones and more. Google I/O 2010 Celebrates the Web as the Platform of Choice for Software Development

Google Announces New Development Tools and Opportunities to More Than 5,000 Attendees at Annual Developer Conference.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) opens I/O 2010, its largest developer conference of the year. The event, which sold out 10 weeks in advance, is being held May 19 and 20 at Moscone West in San Francisco. More than 5,000 attendees from 66 countries will take part in close to 100 technical sessions, breakouts, and fireside chats. I/O 2010 will feature more than 200 speakers, as well as a number of informal opportunities to meet with engineers from Google and partner companies, including demonstrations from more than 180 different companies and a special after-hours event.

This year's I/O event is a recognition and celebration of the web's evolution into the software development platform of choice. It's also an opportunity for Google to share its work in moving the web forward and keeping it open. The web has become more powerful in more places -- from enterprise deployments to mobile handsets.

"Think of how far the web has come since last year's Google I/O, where we demonstrated the potential of HTML5," said Vic Gundotra, Google vice president of developer platforms. "Since calling attention to HTML5 last year, we've been thrilled to see the industry rally around making the web faster, more capable, and available in more places. From enterprises to consumers, from the smallest form factors to the largest, the web's reach and increasing capability make it the platform for the future."

Google's announcements today enable developers to take full advantage of the web platform:

An open, global platform means better performance and broader access for all applications

* Chrome Web Store: Google is announcing the Chrome Web Store, an open marketplace for web apps that helps people find the best web applications across the internet and allows developers to reach new users.

* WebM Project: Google joined a broad array of companies and web community members to announce WebM, an open web media format project. We have open-sourced VP8, a high-quality, web-optimized video codec, and are contributing to the project under a royalty-free license.

* Wave open sign-ups: Google Wave is open to all users at wave.google.com, as a Google Labs product -- no invitation needed. Google Apps administrators will also have the option to add Wave as a Labs feature for their domains, helping groups of people communicate and work together more productively.

The web is ready for enterprise-class app development

* App Engine for Business: Google App Engine for Business lets companies build and maintain their own applications on the same scalable infrastructure that powers Google applications, with added management and support features tailored specifically for the enterprise. New capabilities for businesses include the ability to manage all the apps in an organization from one place, simple pricing based on users and applications, premium developer support, a 99.9% uptime service level agreement, and coming later this year, access to premium features like cloud-based SQL and SSL.

VMware Collaboration: Google and VMware introduce cloud portability, which makes it easy for Java developers to use familiar tools to rapidly develop and deploy rich web apps in the environments of their choice. In just one click, users of the new versions of SpringSource Tool Suite and Google Web Toolkit can deploy their application onto Google App Engine for Business, or a VMware environment, or other infrastructure such as Amazon EC2.

Also this year, more than 180 different companies will participate in the "Developer Sandbox," a place for the developer community to showcase applications they've built and share their experiences in working with the latest web and mobile technologies. As always, Google I/O will include a mix of practical, hands-on advice for building web apps, as well as opportunities to learn about and discuss emerging trends. Sessions will cover tools developed both inside and outside of Google, and topic areas will include: Android, App Engine, Chrome, Enterprise, Geo, Google APIs, Google Web Toolkit, Social Web, and Wave.

Google I/O 2010 Day 1: A more powerful web in more places

Today at Moscone West in San Francisco, we’re kicking off our largest developer conference of the year, Google I/O. Over two days, 5,000 people from 66 countries will hear from 200 speakers, see 180+ developer demonstrations and participate in more than 90 technical sessions, breakouts and fireside chats to meet engineers from Google and partner companies.

At last year's I/O, we demonstrated the potential of HTML5. Since then, the web has moved from a promising platform to a compelling setting for developers to build apps. This week we’ll celebrate this ongoing evolution of the web and share some of our latest work in moving the web forward and keeping it open.

Today we're announcing Google App Engine for Business, which offers new features that enable companies to build internal applications on the same reliable, scalable and secure infrastructure that we at Google use for our own apps. For greater cloud portability, we’re also teaming up with VMware to make it easier for companies to build rich web apps and deploy them to the cloud of their choice or on-premise. In just one click, users of the new versions of SpringSource Tool Suite and Google Web Toolkit can deploy their application to Google App Engine for Business, a VMware environment or other infrastructure, such as Amazon EC2.

There are already lots of great apps out on the web, but there hasn’t been one destination where you could easily find them. Our new Chrome Web Store is an open marketplace for web apps that helps people find the best web applications across the Internet and allows developers to reach new users. We also joined other web companies in announcing WebM, an open web media format project and open-sourced VP8, a high-quality, web-optimized video codec, that we are contributing to the project under a royalty-free license.

We’re pleased to share some updates to our APIs too. Last year, we announced the Google Maps API v3, which was designed to be faster and optimized for mobile devices. Today this API is graduating from Code Labs and is enterprise-ready as part of Google Maps API Premier. We’re also announcing new ways for publishers to improve the relevance of their AdSense ads, a brand-new version of the Feed API with push updates that make the latest PubSubHubbub-enabled feed data available without requiring visitors to refresh pages, and a library of high-quality open-source web fonts, accessible to everyone through the new Google Font API.

Finally, last year we introduced a new way to communicate and collaborate called Google Wave. Today we’re opening Wave to everyone — no invitation necessary — at wave.google.com, as part of Google Labs. Google Apps administrators can also enable it for their domains and help groups of people work together more productively. To learn more about this, our many new API features and more open-source code for developers, visit the Wave Developer blog.

ViVOtech Awarded the Smart Card Alliance OSCA Awards for Best Payments Innovation Technology and the Contactless Intelligence 'Monkey' Awards for Competitive Advantage through Technology.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Silicon Valley-based ViVOtech, the leader in Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile payments, loyalty and marketing applications and contactless NFC readers, announced it is the recipient of two major awards for its role as the NFC software solution provider for the Citi Tap and Pay mobile payment pilot in India. ViVOtech was selected as the winner of the Smart Card Alliance "Outstanding Smart Card Achievement" (OSCA) Award for Innovation in Payments Technology and the Contactless Intelligence "Monkey" Awards for Competitive Advantage through Technology. Citi Tap and Pay was the world's largest and most comprehensive next-generation contactless credit card payments pilot ever undertaken based on NFC technology. ViVOtech provided the underlying technology including the NFC wallet, the Over-the-Air (OTA) card provisioning software, the smart posters and the mobile coupon application in addition to the contactless readers that participating merchants used to accept payments.

"ViVOtech is very excited with the recognition we are receiving for our role in enabling the Citi Tap and Pay pilot as the NFC software solution provider," said Michael Mullagh, CEO of ViVOtech. "ViVOtech's mobile software solution is designed to be easily rolled out to a large base of consumers, and it was proven through delivering over 3,000 users a seamless mobile payment and promotion experience."

ViVOtech provided a complete NFC mobile payment and coupon solution, including the following software, hardware, and services components:

* Citi Wallet Software distributed with Nokia 6212 NFC mobile phone
* OTA & Trusted Service Management Software (Control Server) installed at Vodafone, the participating Mobile Network Operator
* OTA card provisioning software (Issuer Server) installed at the Citi India data centre
* Mobile promotion coupon and smart poster management software
* Smart posters with ViVOtag technology installed in various shopping areas
* NFC contactless readers installed at merchant locations
* Local support during the trial period

The mobile payment infrastructure deployed with ViVOtech technology allowed pilot participants to purchase NFC-capable Nokia N 6212 classic phones at designated Nokia stores, pre-loaded with Citi Tap and Pay wallet application enabled with MasterCard's PayPass™ contactless payment technology. Participants were then able to securely and easily execute an OTA download of their Citibank MasterCard credit card onto their mobile phones. Participants also enjoyed promotional offers by tapping their NFC phones on smart posters, and received coupons in seconds. Post-purchase, participants used their phones to make Tap and Pay transactions at locations displaying the Citi Tap and Pay and MasterCard PayPass™ acceptance marks.

With over 3,000 participants the Citi Tap and Pay pilot was a major success. Edgar Dunn & Company in an independent report published in early march said that the "The Tap and Pay mobile proximity payments pilot project in Bengaluru, represented a watershed event in the recent intensive history of Mobile Financial Services." The report went on to say "It was the largest pilot programme of its kind to date. It identified positive consumer demand, reliability of available technology, and growth in purchase volumes. It demonstrated that with confirmed commitment and investment from industry stakeholders, mobile NFC proximity payments have the potential to generate growth in payments, create value for stakeholders, and help convert cash transactions to electronic payments."

Most Reliable Wireless Network Just Got Better In Medina County, Ohio

Integration of Verizon Wireless’ and Alltel’s Networks Delivers Increased Wireless Voice and Data Coverage to the Area.

WADSWORTH, OH — Verizon Wireless announced it has completed the integration of its network with that of Alltel in Medina County to provide customers with clearer reception, fewer dropped calls and more coverage, including stronger in-building coverage.

Verizon Wireless’ voice and high-speed 3G data network combined with that of Alltel creates the largest wireless network footprint in the United States. The integration in this area enables more customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls; send and receive e-mail and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones on the nation’s most reliable wireless network.

Coverage areas directly affected by the network integration include River Styx, a portion of Seville, Spencer and Wadsworth.

“The addition of Alltel’s network to the Verizon Wireless network provides our customers with unmatched coverage in the area,” said Mark Frazier, president – Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. “Now our high-speed 3G broadband wireless network is the largest and most reliable in the United States, and network reliability is the No. 1 reason customers choose and stay with Verizon Wireless. We are committed to continuing to perfect our network so that our customers in Ohio know they can depend on us every time they use their wireless devices.”

Verizon Wireless has been preparing to integrate Alltel’s network since completing its purchase of the company last year. Alltel’s 3G data network has been upgraded to the latest revision of wireless broadband technology to enable faster delivery of data applications, including e-mail and browsing the Internet. Verizon Wireless invests more in its network than any other wireless service provider in the United States. The company has spent more than $59 billion since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. During the first quarter of this year, the company invested nearly $62 million in its Ohio network.

Verizon Wireless Joins Forces With RecycleBank® To Make Recycling Even More Rewarding For Philadelphia Tri-State Area Households

Exclusive Partnership Offers Residents Additional Incentives to Recycle
• Residents can sign-up for free and earn reward points through RecycleBank for curbside recycling and helping the environment
• Points can be redeemed for groceries, gift card, entertainment and other merchandise at hundreds of participating local and national merchants.
• Participating Verizon Wireless stores in PA, NJ, DE offering valuable “bonus” points to RecycleBank customers.

TREVOSE, PA — Verizon Wireless, provider of the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G network, and RecycleBank, which manages the country’s premier recycling-rewards and loyalty program, have teamed up to help increase the curbside recycling rate in households across the Philadelphia Tri-State region. The partnership – a first of its kind for Verizon Wireless and RecycleBank – offers additional benefits for participating in the innovative recycling-rewards program.

RecycleBank rewards consumers for green actions such as curbside recycling, servicing more than 300 communities across the United States and in the United Kingdom. In Philadelphia, the company works closely with the city’s Streets Department to encourage recycling through the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards program.

“This is the first time RecycleBank has joined forces with a wireless company to make curbside recycling more rewarding for households,” said Ron Gonen, CEO and co-founder of RecycleBank. “This innovative partnership will allow us to offer additional incentives for RecycleBank members in the Philadelphia tri-state area and help us achieve our common goal of increasing recycling.”

Residents who participate in the program can potentially earn hundreds of dollars of rewards points each year for recycling. The points can be redeemed through RecycleBank for groceries, gift cards, merchandise and entertainment at hundreds of participating local and national merchants. Additionally, residents have the option to donate their points to the RecycleBank Green Schools program. Through its exclusive partnership with RecycleBank, Verizon Wireless is offering additional incentives to residents in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware to help increase residential recycling, including:

* Fifty bonus RecycleBank points for the first 10,000 consumers to sign up for the program;
* Plus, the first 500 RecycleBank members who sign a two-year contract for Verizon Wireless service will receive double their curbside recycling points for the entire two-year period.

“This initiative is yet another way we are continuing our strong track record of fostering sustainability both inside our business and in the communities we serve. It’s a win-win for local economies, the environment and our customers,” said Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State Region. “I applaud Mayor Nutter’s vision to make Philadelphia the nation’s ‘greenest’ city by 2015 and I’m convinced that innovative programs like Philadelphia’s Recycling Rewards effort, powered by RecycleBank, will be critical to helping speed the Mayor’s vision along the road to reality.”

In just five years, RecycleBank’s rewards-based model has proven its success. On average, city recycling volumes increase two-to-five times and members across the country earn hundreds of dollars in reward value. Additionally, every ton of recyclable material diverted away from landfills decreases landfill disposal costs for the partner cities.

Terminal mode steps up a gear

GLOBAL – First announced last month, the Terminal Mode specification has now been released as a proposed industry standard for bringing mobile apps to cars. Nokia together with CE4A (Consumer Electronics for Automotive) have opened the specification up to all automotive and mobile device manufacturers, in a bid to generate wide adoption.

Nokia has already begun collaborating with a number of auto manufacturing leaders including Alpine Electronics, Continental, Fiat and Valmet Automotive, amongst others. Timo Ali-Vehmas, head of compatibility and industry collaboration at Nokia said

“Nokia is an active member of many open standardization initiatives and forums globally, and is keen to enable open collaboration and broader use of innovation for the faster adoption of new services and products for the benefit of consumers.”

We’re still in the embryonic stages of Terminal Mode but already it’s looking very exciting, both for Nokia and for us as consumers. Think about Ovi Maps on your device working seamlessly with your in-car display to provide free drive navigation (and walk, of course, when you’re not in the car). The potential goes well beyond basic functions such as being able to make and receive calls seamlessly, or access your phone’s contacts using the car’s controls. We could well be looking at a future where apps developed for mobile devices could be as useful in car as they are on your device.

Certainly makes you think. What kind of apps do you think could come out of terminal mode? How would you like to see your mobile device work with your car?

Sony Ericsson calls on EU to further restrict hazardous substances in consumer electronics

Sony Ericsson joins forces with an alliance of public interest organizations and global technology brands to persuade the European Parliament to ban the use of hazardous substances in consumer electronics from 2015 onwards.

Brussels – In a partnership announced Sony Ericsson joined Acer, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and public interest organizations ChemSec, Clean Production Action and the European Environmental Bureau, to call for a strengthening of the EU Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

Currently the RoHS directive restricts some heavy metals and two types of BFR. However, Sony Ericsson along with other members of the alliance is calling for restrictions on all brominated flame retardants (BFR) as well as PVC. When BFR and PVC are incinerated under substandard recycling conditions, they form halogenated dioxins that are potent toxic chemicals. Sony Ericsson believes these brominated flame retardants and PVC should be phased out from electrical and electronic products as soon as possible. Over the past 18 months Sony Ericsson has been developing products without these unwanted substances and believes that substitute materials are available and could be rolled out across the industry with little disruption.

“Sony Ericsson is committed to a complete phase-out of halogenated organic substances from its products, and at the current time has phased out almost all brominated flame retardants (BFR)," said Daniel Paska, Environmental Expert at Sony Ericsson. "We believe the electronics industry has a responsibility to move proactively to find substitutes to replace BFR and PVC and are therefore calling on EU legislators to show leadership on this issue by voting to tighten the RoHS directive.”

Sony Ericsson along with the other members of the alliance will lobby EU legislators who are currently in the process of debating whether to tighten the existing RoHS directive and invites other members of the industry to join them.

“Sony Ericsson is committed to delivering products with the best possible environmental performance in the industry”, said Mats PellbƤck Scharp, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Sony Ericsson. “That is why we support strong environmental legislations. We have also introduced a range of GreenHeart™ pioneer phones that showcase more sustainable materials like recycled plastics, waterbourne paints and energy efficient chargers. We have also committed to making the majority of our 2011 portfolio compliant with GreenHeart™ requirements.

Sony Ericsson has to date phased out all PVC in its products and nearly all halogenated flame retardants.

Symbian and Feature Phones buck the trend and see growth in CTR Index

METRICS APRIL 2010 HIGHLIGHTS:

- Symbian dominates US CTR – 2.7x higher than iPhone
- Europe’s best mobile advertising performer is Windows Phone

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

April’s metrics show that Symbian and Feature Phones have bucked the global drop in click-through rates, both registering growth. In the US, Smaato’s metrics reveal that Symbian dominates the region in terms of CTR’s, 2.7x higher than its closest rival, Apple’s iPhone. The data acts as further proof that there’s more to mobile advertising than the iPhone, even in its largest market, the US.

Smaato’s metrics are based upon 40 mobile ad networks and over 6 billion ad requests served in the Smaato Network of more than 4,000 registered mobile publishers in April 2010.

Worldwide CTR Index (Click Through Rate) by Handset Operating System

Chart 1: Smaato Index – Operating System CTR (Click Through Rates) worldwide, April 2010

The performance of different operating systems in April shows Feature Phone handsets continue its consistent rise in CTR’s (134 up 9 from March), closing the gap on Symbian (157 rising just a point from the previous month). The remaining operating systems saw drops in the index, as CTR’s decreased across the globe.

The Index consists of the average CTR of all devices and this number is set to 100.

Despite Feature Phone’s gains, Symbian’s remains the leading OS in terms of click through rates worldwide, with more than double the click through rate of iPhone. Putting this into perspective, we have to consider the sheer number of Symbian devices compared to Apple devices, but it should also serve as further proof to advertisers that the iPhone is far from the be-all and end-all in mobile advertising.

Chart 2: Smaato Index – Operating System CTR (Click Through Rates) worldwide, January-to-April 2010

Fill Rate Worldwide

Smaato’s metrics demonstrates the performance of mobile ad networks globally and the fill rate is measured as the percentage of ads delivered per ad request and varies by different factors, like country, device and content type.

The ad networks are not published in the monthly Smaato metrics, but are revealed in the dashboard of registered Smaato publishers reporting and analytics tools (www.smaato.com/signup).

Chart 3: Smaato Index – Fill Rate of Mobile Ad Networks (worldwide), April 2010

Chart 4: Smaato Index – Fill Rate of Mobile Ad Networks (worldwide), January- April 2010

The fill rates of the global top 10 ad networks, dropped from March to April, with the global average dipping to 26% from 28% in March. There are still six ad networks performing above the average but the gap between the best performing three has closed significantly, from 40% points between AN1 and AN3 to just 11% points.

The average for worldwide ad network fill rate performance dropped slightly from March to April (28% to 26%). This data helps to prove that an ad network aggregation system can help partners achieve the best possible return and the highest possible fill rate, across the globe.

Spotlight: USA vs. Europe

Follow Smaato’s recent focus on South East Asia, it has turned spotlights on the USA and Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain) in order to compare how the western markets line up against each other in terms of operating system click through rates and ad network fill rates.

Click Through Rates

Chart 5: Smaato Index – Operating System CTR (Click Through Rates) USA, April 2010

Chart 6: Smaato Index – Operating System CTR (Click Through Rates) Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, April 2010

The differences in CTRs in USA and Europe are apparent from the charts above. In the USA Symbian dominates the market (339) with more than 2.7x higher CTR index than its closest rival, Apple’s iPhone (125). Europe, however, tells a different story with Windows Mobile taking a surprise lead in terms of CTRs (126), closely followed by the iPhone (122), pushing Symbian in to third (111). This data helps to show that even in it’s home markets, the iPhone, while still strong, is not the top performing OS in terms of CTR – which could well be one of the reasons Apple is looking to try to re-invent mobile advertising to engage its users.

Fill Rates: USA vs. Europe

Chart 7: Smaato Index – Fill Rate of Mobile Ad Networks (USA), April 2010

The average fill rate of mobile ad networks in the USA rose again from March (41%), to 46% in April, almost double that of the worldwide average. However, despite the average increase, only three ad networks out of the top 10 performed above this, with most of the ad networks suffering from a drop in fill-rates, reflecting the worldwide decline.

Chart 8: Smaato Index – Fill Rate of Mobile Ad Networks (Europe: UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain), April 2010

In Europe the average fill rate (25) is much closer to the worldwide average of 26% and again similarly to the ad network fill rates worldwide, six of the top 10 ad networks performed above the average. Similar to the US, Europe has three ad networks performing significantly stronger than the rest, with 22% points separating the top ad network (93%) from the third strongest network in Europe (71%)

Ad Network Response Time worldwide

Smaato has taken another look at the response time of the top-performing ad networks in the Metrics for April 2010. The top 15 ad networks show a broad spectrum of performance.

Chart 9: Smaato Index – Response Time for Mobile Ad Networks (worldwide), April 2010

The fastest response time in April increased to 25 milliseconds, from 11 milliseconds in March. In April there was significantly less of a difference between the top four ad networks with only 13 milliseconds separating AN1 and AN4. The drop in performance from March is noticeable as five out of the top 15 performed below the average, compared to three in March.

Publishers should consider response times when adding several ad networks within a page load and therefore an allotted time to fill the ad space reserved.

This is a significant consideration for mobile publishers as for them, the best user-experience comes with the fastest loading time of a mobile web site or for in-app advertising. If an ad is requested from a mobile ad network and no ad is available, then a faster response time allows sending this request to one or more ad networks for a chance to get an ad delivered.

Do More with Google Latitude and Your Location Using the New Latitude API

Location, location, location. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re really excited about all the ways location can make mobile apps and websites more useful. With Google Latitude, we created a simple way for you to own your location and let you easily share it with whomever you like, display it wherever you like, and even keep a history of it if you want. We wanted to give you even more ways to use your location, so today we’re announcing the Google Latitude API -- an easy and safe way for you to use and reuse your Latitude location with any apps or services that you can imagine!

Since launching Latitude, our team has been talking about all the cool things you could do with your continuously updated Latitude location. While we’ve built some of our ideas, there are simply too many exciting ones for us to do alone. Instead, we wanted to let you safely share your Latitude location with third parties who could create apps that do more with your location. Developers could, for example, build apps or services for:

* Thermostats that turn on and off automatically when you’re driving towards or away from home.
* Traffic that send alerts if there’s heavy traffic ahead of you or on a route you usually take based on your location history
* Your credit card accounts to alert you of potential fraud when a purchase is made far from where you actually are.
* Photo albums so your vacation photos appear on a map at all the places you visited based on your location history.

We want to help developers build all these applications and more, but our first priority is keeping you, the user, in control over your location. That way, you only use it when, where, and how you choose. Before any application, website, or feature you’ve chosen to use can access your Latitude data, you must specifically grant access to the developer and will see exactly what access or data they’re requesting. This includes whether you share your current best available vs. city-level location or your location history if you’ve opted in to using Google Location History. If you change your mind, you’ll be able to both see which developers have access to your Latitude data and revoke access from any developer at any time from your Google Account’s personal settings. Just like with Latitude, you always choose who can see your location.

We’ve also learned that making your phone’s continuous location available in the background is tricky to do accurately and efficiently -- just imagine your phone’s battery life if several apps were continuously getting your location in different ways? With this in mind, we built a free and open Latitude API that lets the third-party developers you choose start using your updated location in new ways without reinventing the wheel.

If you’re a developer, go to code.google.com/apis/latitude to get started and read our documentation. Join the Latitude API Google Group to ask questions, discuss the API with the community, and give us feedback. The Latitude API is being launched in Labs so we can listen to developer and user feedback before it graduates. We’re excited to see what you can do with Latitude and location so please do let us know what you think!

If you’re a Latitude user, check out our existing Latitude apps and keep an eye out for future apps and services that you can choose to use and do even more with your Latitude location. If you haven’t started using Latitude yet, get started so you too can start using your location in new ways.

* In smartphones, Android takes No 4 spot from Microsoft

* Android beats Apple in North America

* Q1 cellphone sales grew fastest pace in four years

* Raises 2010 handset market growth view to 14% from 11%

PARIS - Google Inc's (GOOG.O) Android took fourth place in the first quarter in the number of smartphones sold which use it, research showed on Wednesday, showing the increasing success of the search group's push into cellphones.

Android overtook Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Windows Mobile, the data from research firm Gartner showed, leaving Google well placed amid the increasing popularity of mobile browsing as handsets look set to soon surpass computers for accessing the web.

The Android operating system, which was in 10 percent of smartphones sold in the quarter, still lags Nokia Oyj's (NOK1V.HE) Symbian as well as products from Research in Motion Ltd (RIMM.O) (RIM.TO) and Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

Gartner said Android beat Apple in the North American market in the first quarter and would catch the iPhone maker globally soon.

"You have one vendor with one model and eight to nine vendors with many models -- of course you get bigger volumes," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. All top handset vendors except Nokia have either launched or are planning to unveil smartphone models running on the Android operating system.

The growth of Android -- whose features include easier access to Google services -- helped smartphone sales jump 49 percent in the January-March quarter, Gartner said.

The global cellphone market grew 17 percent year-on-year in the quarter, its fastest pace in four years, as demand started to recover following last year's recession.

Market leader Nokia saw its share slip to 35 percent in the three months, while closest rival Samsung (005930.KS) raised its market share to 20.6 percent, Gartner said. [ID:nLDE64I04T]

Milanesi said Gartner raised its view for global phone market growth in 2010 to around 14 percent from a previous 11 percent.
