Brightcove Launches Android SDK, Supports Flash 10.1 for Mobile

Video platform provider Brightcove June 22 released a software development kit for smartphones based on Google's Android operating system and new mobile templates for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which launched with support for Android 2.2 devices in the Android Market. Brightcove's support for Android comes as multimedia consumption on smartphones are on the rise. This is particularly true on the iPhone and Android devices, which are powerful enough to serve video, animations, games and other content without a hitch.

Brightcove, who seeks to put its Web-based video platform anywhere businesses require it, released a software development kit for smartphones based on Google's Android operating system June 22.

The Brightcove App SDK for Android is accompanies by new mobile templates for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which launched with support for Android 2.2 devices in the Android Market.

Brightcove President and COO Dave Mendels told eWEEK the Brightcove App SDK for Android provides developers the software tools to write native video apps that consumers can run on their Android devices. Tools include pre-built components for playback, content discovery, and hooks into the Brightcove Media API services.

Over time, Brightcove App SDK for Android will allow developers to install sharing capability to Facebook and Twitter with a single touch on the device app. Cover Flow playlist navigation and the ability to surface related and popular video content will also be added.

Brightcove's support for Android, following the launch of a similar SDK for Apple's iPhone last November, comes as multimedia consumption on smartphones are on the rise.

This is particularly true on the iPhone and Android devices, many of which feature 1 GHz processors to serve video, animations, games and other content without a hitch.

Indeed, Mendels noted that 66 percent of the world's mobile data traffic will be video playback by 2014.

The increased interest in viewing video from smartphones makes it imperative for Brightcove and others in the industry to support iPhone, Android and any other device users buy to navigate the Web on the go.

"We believe Android will be the major other mobile Web browsing platform at least for the next year alongside the Apple [iPhone and iPad] devices," Mendels said.

Brightcove has also launched mobile templates for Flash Player 10.1, allowing companies to run video for native applications and mobile Web browsing that adapts on demand to the playback environment.

The player templates feature user interface controls designed for improving video viewing on compact screens from Android and other smartphone platforms except for the iPhone, which will now support Flash.

Flash Player 10.1 is available on the Android Market now for smartphones and tablets once users are able to upgrade to Android 2.2, which Google unveiled last month with support for Flash Player 10.1.

Adobe said devices supporting Android 2.2 and Flash Player 10.1 include the Dell Streak tablet/smartphone hybrid, Google Nexus One, HTC Evo, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, DROID by Motorola, Motorola Milestone, Samsung Galaxy S and others.

Flash Player 10.1 is also now supported on devices based on BlackBerry, webOS, Windows Phone 7 Series, MeeGo, LiMO and Symbian OS platforms, and will come pre-installed on smartphones, tablets and other devices this year and into 2011.

Flash Player 10.1 Now Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Today I'm thrilled to announce that Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. You can get it now. Flash Player 10.1 for Android will be coming later this month - the beta release is currently available in the Android market.

In this post, I'd like to share some of the top new PC-specific features, many of which have mobile implications as well, as I discussed in an earlier blog post about the engineering efforts behind Flash Player 10.1. In this post, I'll cover the work we did to improve performance, power management and video, and discuss the new multi-touch and private browsing capabilities, as well as our work to provide a better Flash Player experience for Mac users.

Performance and Power Management
With Flash Player 10.1 we aligned our development efforts to create a single runtime that works across desktops and devices. Performance and power efficiency was a huge focus since different devices have varying sized processors and memory, and we needed to ensure Flash Player 10.1 would work across all of them. So we made a number of changes to Flash Player that directly translate to faster execution and reduced resource consumption. We achieved some large gains in reducing the amount of memory used at runtime, particularly for bitmap-intensive apps. The ActionScript virtual machine received some targeted optimizations, which directly benefit typed AS3 code. And, our release wouldn't be complete if we didn't improve the garbage collector - where we tuned its behavior to run more efficiently and better amortize its processing over the application's lifetime.

As noted above, the team invested a lot of time in memory optimization. Tabbed browsing is common for PC users, who often have many pages open in their browser at the same time. This is a great timesaver but also uses up lots of RAM. With Flash Player 10.1, we added new functionality that detects when memory is running low. Now, content that runs in Flash Player will automatically shut down when the available memory is running low.

The Flash Player team made a number of improvements to conserve resources, reduce power usage and extend battery life. For example, Flash Player can now automatically reduce the power consumption for content running in the background on a non-visible browser tab to improve performance when users are multitasking. In cases where audio is playing in the background, playback fidelity is maintained.

Some significant changes were made to Flash Player 10.1 to re-architect the system for managing timers and events. Without going into the details here (Tinic Uro will share a post next week that covers this topic more comprehensively), the end result is that apps for Flash Player and Adobe AIR will use significantly less CPU when the content is idle and consume less power in the process. These improvements are most pronounced on Macs.

Video improvements
From hardware decoding to better buffering, p2p video, multicast and http streaming -- there are many improvements in Flash Player 10.1 with regards to web video delivery and playback. For desktops, Flash Player 10.1 introduces hardware-based H.264 video decoding to deliver smooth, high quality video with minimal overhead across supported operating systems. Using available hardware to decode video offloads tasks from the CPU, improving video playback performance, offering smoother frame rates, and reducing system resource utilization.

The addition of HTTP Dynamic Streaming expands the delivery options for high quality live and on-demand media with full adaptive bitrate functionality. This new option enables media publishers to leverage standard HTTP networking infrastructure to help increase capacity, reach, and quality of service for video delivery using standards-based MP4 fragments. Using the Open Source Media Framework, Flash developers can easily leverage this new technology to deploy your video much more quickly. You can download the free tools for HTTP Dynamic Streaming here.

Peer-assisted networking and Multicast is available for Flash Player 10.1 by leveraging Real Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP), which enables peers on a network to assist in real time communication and content delivery over the web. Flash Player now supports peer-assisted networking groups, which allows an application to segment its users and send messages and data between members of the group. Application level multicast allows for one (or a few)-to-many streaming of continuous live video streams as well as real-time audio/video chat applications.

Enhanced RTMP streaming and buffering features will also greatly improve the video viewing experience for Flash Player users. Stream reconnect lets Flash Player 10.1 allow an RTMP stream to continue to play through the buffer even if the connection is disrupted, thereby making media experiences more tolerant of short term network failures and enabling uninterrupted video playback. When a connection is re-established, the stream resumes playback. Developers can add stream re-connection logic in ActionScript to re-establish server connection and resume streaming with limited disruption in the video.

New to Flash Player 10.1, Smart seek can easily make using Flash Player a DVR-like experience. Smart seek allows the video viewer to seek within a new "back" buffer so viewers can easily rewind or fast forward video without Flash Player calling back to the server, thus reducing the start time after a seek. Smart seek can speed up seeking performance of streamed videos and enable the creation of slow motion, double time, or "instant replay" experiences for streaming video. With buffered stream catch-up, developers can set a target latency threshold that triggers slightly accelerated video playback to help ensure that live video streaming stays in sync with real time over extended playback periods. Finally, Fast Switch benefits Dynamic Streaming with RTMP to improve switching times between bitrates, reducing the time to receive the best viewing experience for available bandwidth and processing speed. Users no longer need to wait for the buffer to play through, which can result in a faster bitrate transition time and an uninterrupted video playback experience, regardless of bandwidth fluctuations or client computing power.

Multi-touch
Many companies are beginning to rollout touch enabled devices, and not just smartphones, but tablets as well as PCs like the HP Touchsmart. With Flash Player 10.1, you can take advantage of the latest hardware and operating system user interaction capabilities using a new set of ActionScript 3 APIs for multi-touch and native gesture events, creating the ability to interact with multiple objects simultaneously or work with native gestures, such as pinch, scroll, rotate, scale, and two-finger tap. Multi-touch may be one of the most important features for developers and designers creating new content with the Flash Platform, knowing your implementations may be easily extended to devices with touch capabilities. To get started using multi-touch with Flash Player 10.1, check out this ADC resource.

Browser Privacy mode
Flash Player 10.1 abides by the host browser's private browsing mode (where local data and browsing activity are not cached on the local system) providing a consistent private browsing mechanism between SWF and HTML content. Private local shared objects (LSOs) behave like their traditional variants as long as Flash Player is in memory, and LSOs created during private browsing are removed when the user returns to conventional browsing mode. Existing shared objects are preserved but inaccessible until private browsing is turned off.

Mac-specific improvements
Our Mac engineers, with some help from the Safari team, made significant changes to Flash Player for Macs. Here's a partial list of the work we completed for Argo. First and foremost, Flash Player 10.1 is a full-fledged Cocoa app (though legacy Carbon support remains for some browsers that require it). We now leverage Cocoa events, use Cocoa UI for our dialogs, leverage Core Audio for sound, Core Graphics for printing support, and use Core Foundation for bundle-style text.

Mac performance was also an explicit focus for us. One improvement we made is the use of a double-buffered OpenGL context for improved full screen playback efficiency. We also investigated a number of compile-time optimizations using Xcode to improve our overall execution speed of Flash Player on Macs. Rendering performance was improved by our use of Core Animation. For Macs running OS X 10.6 or greater, we leverage the hardware acceleration in Core Animation to dramatically improve the efficiency of displaying web pages which combine both SWF and HTML content. The details and performance implications of the Core Animation work are outlined in Tinic's blog post . The overall performance improvements of Flash Player for Mac users will result in faster video playback, more efficient CPU utilization, and greater battery life.

As you can see, don't let the version number fool you! Flash Player 10.1 is more than a "dot upgrade." It was a monumental undertaking including some significant architectural improvements and a long list of enhancements that will help the more than 3 million Flash designers and developers continue to move web innovation forward. We can't wait to see what you develop. Be sure to check out the new Flash Player 10.1 product pages and ADC content to learn more.

Additionally, today we announced the immediate availability of the Adobe AIR 2 runtime. Starting today, you can download and install the new version at get.adobe.com/air/. Developers can now deploy applications built for AIR 2 on Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Read more about AIR 2 on the AIR Team blog.

Smartphones become the new LBS battleground, says iSuppli

With smartphones emerging as the strategic computing platform for the next decade, the usage of smartphone-based OEM and aftermarket on-board navigation systems is set to soar by a factor of 10 in 2010 and by nearly fortyfold in 2014, iSuppli predicts.

The number of smartphone-based OEM and aftermarket on-board navigation systems in use is projected to rise to 81 million units in 2010, up from eight million in 2009. By 2014, usage will increase to 297 million.

"Smartphones over the next decade will rival PCs as a market for hardware, software, communications and location based services (LBS)," said Danny Kim, analyst and global manager for automotive research at iSuppli. "In the last two years alone, the smartphone has become the most important platform for map and navigation usage. With maps becoming a standard feature in a growing number of smartphones, the number of smartphone map users is increasing sharply."

The smartphone is also rapidly pioneering new LBS applications. "iSuppli also believes - for several reasons - that the smartphone is likely to generate many innovative LBS apps in the next five years," Kim added. "First, Apple's iPhone is the most successful LBS battleground so far with more than 6,000 LBS apps available. Furthermore, the iPhone's dominance is primarily in the aftermarket downloadable navigation application market. Finally, Nokia and Android devices will lead the OEM preloaded navigation application market."

Smartphone on-board navigation market: OEM vs aftermarket

Navigation software can be included by smartphone manufacturers and embedded into the smartphone - an approach iSuppli calls OEM on-board smartphone navigation, similar to the terminology used in the auto industry. Most on-board navigation software will be included as a feature by smartphone manufacturers and preloaded onto the device. To this end, OEM or preloaded on-board navigation will be the largest segment of the overall market for on-board smartphone navigation, driven mainly by Nokia.

Navigation applications also can be downloaded by the smartphone user after the device is purchased, a model iSuppli terms as aftermarket on-board smartphone navigation. While the segment is much smaller, aftermarket on-board smartphone navigation is expected to get a big boost in 2010 given that Nokia made available its Ovi Map with turn-by-turn navigation a free download earlier this year. More than 10 million Ovi Map navigation applications were downloaded in the first quarter, although download volume in the second quarter will decline because Nokia already has preloaded the navigation application on all of its smartphones.

Most of the paid aftermarket on-board activities are currently on the Apple iPhone given that navigation is not a preloaded app. To date, the iPhone accounts for nearly 50% market share of the total number of aftermarket on-board navigation sales, estimated at more than 2.9 million applications in 2009.

A large opportunity

Such numbers offer considerable opportunity for navigation software companies. And because Apple gets 30% of the navigation app retail value, the business model also benefits Apple significantly. In 2010, the iPhone on-board navigation market is forecasted at 5.8 million units with an average price of at least US$50 per app, which translates into around US$290 million in retail value or approximately US$87 million for Apple.

In contrast, Nokia receives no revenue for its preloaded Ovi Map navigation software. Because Nokia owns its map supplier, Navteq, Nokia can afford to give away a free navigation program. Other smart phone companies will also need a low-cost map source to compete with Nokia's free navigation application.

The increasing availability of low-cost maps will allow many smartphone manufacturers to offer free preloaded on-board navigation software as the open-source maps expand their coverage. Such availability means that aftermarket on-board navigation will see a declining market share in smart phones.

Symbian^3 – Main Applications and Features

Mobile-review have posted an article on the Main Applications and Features of Symbian^3. Here is their final conclusion.

A lot of effort has been put in the S^3 to optimize the code and its work speed. Compared to the fifth edition of the S60 platform, everything appears several times faster, which is a great advantage. In addition, the increased RAM size allows one to run a dozen of applications and keep them active in the memory after that, which is another advantage.

As for the disadvantages, the S^3 is none other than an evolutionary development of S60 5th edition with a few minor features added (e.g. an updated player, single tap, pinch-to-zoom, HDMI output, several widget desktops). The situation is analogous to the Android updates from version 2.0 to 2.2 through 2.1, which happened within half a year or slightly more than that. What was added is a new gallery with support for geo-tags (version 2.1) plus minor updates to other functions, as well as extra speed in version 2.2. It took Symbian about two years to do exactly the same.

Unfortunately, the browser didn't undergo any significant changes and yet remains Symbian's weak spot, as well as the icon appearance, interface and its animation. The widgets and the way the desktops are organized are both beneath criticism, too. The developers must have concentrated on the unsuccessful Nokia N97 experience overlooking more fruitful solutions. Does the interface bring anything new to the market? No it doesn't. Are there any comparative advantages? There are none. For example, by adopting the idea of a video editor from the Samsung i8910, Nokia did add extra functionality to the S^3. Yet that is a single example of such successful adoption, there's hardly any other to mention. Improving the music player to the level of 2007's Apple iPhone can't be considered an advantage; it's an attempt to catch up with the competitor but not to claim the leadership.

I can come up with many other such attempts. Yet the final conclusion will remain the same. The S^3 appears an intermediate version of the platform unfortunately, one that has been delayed several times. What is presented in the end, has been available in other OS' for a long time, Symbian is just trying to catch up with the competition (e.g. the newly released social services in the phonebook could be seen in the N97 prototypes two years ago). For the Nokia fans who are satisfied with S60 5th edition it is a great improvement (it's faster, more stable, adds some new features), but for the whole market the platform comes out outdated, both in terms of its interface and many inbuilt software capabilities. It is functionally inferior to iOS 4 (e.g. in terms of games, social services, interface, e-mail functionality, amount of third-party software), Android (e.g. in terms of interface, extra phonebook and calendar features), Bada (e.g. in terms of interface, Social Hub functionality, etc.). Unfortunately, the number of updates in this version of Symbian is not enough to qualify for its own name; Nokia used to call such updates Feature Packs. Now the company is trying to make a splash since it is lacking resources and that is all it's got. All the effort has been put into S^4. However, taking into account the fact that the latter is based on S^3 to some extent, the company won't be able to build a new platform from scratch. Nokia is also dissipating its energy on MeeGo, which doesn't leave much chance for improving the services and platforms. All those observations put together provide the necessary justification for the meager Symbian update that we have.

The S^3 platform is a real gift to the competition from Nokia itself. Products based on S^3 will be widely advertized and have huge sales, which should have an impact on the product generations to come after them. Let me explain that. Having bought a phone with the outdated interface, the customers will soon get acquainted with the alternative interfaces and OS functionalities. And Symbian will only lose from such comparison, even in the low-end. There's no need even to mention the new Android version due at the end of the year. The new Symbian is inferior to the already existing solutions.

In addition to the traditional forum discussion option, we have prepared a questionnaire, in which you can personally evaluate the level of improvement in S^3. I believe it to be an objective measure of whether the new Symbian platform is bliss or miss. The Symbian and Nokia people will have an opportunity to get your feedback and draw conclusions otherwise unavailable to them due to their firm belief that the Nokia name can be selling products for years by itself, without having to make major improvements to those. It will also be a measure of how objective our editing team and I personally are. That is why I would like to kindly ask you to spend five minutes to answer the questionnaire and write a few lines on the forum. I don't ask for that often but will appreciate your time and opinion. Thank you in advance.

Google Maps for Android Helps You Find the Right Place, Catch a Train, and Add Latitude Friends

Hot off the presses, Google Maps for Android version 4.3 has added a couple new features to help you quickly choose the right place to grab dinner, catch the next train, and find friends to add in Latitude.

Have you ever had to make a split decision for dinner plans while on the go? Now, you can see a snapshot of what people are saying about places right on search result pages. Instead of poring through full reviews, you can start by looking at what the most frequently mentioned aspects about a place are, such as food, service, atmosphere, or anything else people keep mentioning. Just like on Place Pages for your computer, the color-coded bar gives an overview of how positively people are talking about any individual aspect. Tap one to see more details like the actual review snippets. Whether you’re looking for top-notch service or a vibrant ambiance, you can now pick just the right place to go.

You’ll also find a new addition to public transit station pages: upcoming schedules. Select any transit station icon directly from the map and open its page by tapping the window. You’ll find a handy list of the next departure times for any subways, trains, or buses that are leaving from that station where transit info is available.

In Google Latitude, we wanted to make it even easier for you to find friends and family with whom you’d like to share your location. Right at the bottom of your Latitude friend list, you’ll be able to quickly start sharing your location with long lost friends, loved ones, and others from your Google Contacts. Add any suggested friends by tapping the + icon and sending them a sharing request. Tap the x and they’ll be dropped from your suggested friends list. Don’t worry -- you can always add them later by choosing “Add friends” from the Latitude menu.

Get the latest version of Maps by searching for Google Maps in Android Market from Android 1.6+ phones. If you’re reading this on your phone, just tap here. Version 4.3 is available in all the countries and languages where Maps is currently available.

A Million Users Strong, Google Voice Opens To All

When Google launches new services, they often gets a lot of hype (see: Wave, Buzz). Unfortunately, they don’t always live up to that hype (see: Wave, Buzz). But one service that Google launched last year definitely has: Google Voice. Sadly, it has only been open to those with invites. But starting today, it is open to all.

Google Voice started as GrandCentral, a startup launched in 2006 to revolutionize phone management on the web. Google quickly snapped it up in 2007 for over $50 million. For the next two years, it went through a metamorphosis. During that time, some wondered if it was yet another service that Google bought and let die. But in 2009, it emerged as the Google Voice butterfly.

The “early preview” of Google Voice that Google unveiled last year has since undergone a number of changes. Notably, SMS now works better, a Chrome extension makes it simple to keep on top of everything, and there’s a great mobile web app. Most importantly though, Google Voice now works seamlessly with all Android-based mobile phones. The solution is brilliant — and was the central figure in Google’s falling out with Apple (after they rejected the native Google Voice app).

There are also some features we’re still waiting for — such as full number portability and a desktop app (which may be scrapped now).

Google says that there are now over one million people actively using the service. You can expect that number to balloon now that anyone can go to the site and sign up.

In fact, why are you still reading this? Go sign up (well, if you’re in the U.S. – yes, it’s still U.S.-only). After all, according to the chart below, Google Voice is the pinnacle of human communication.

With the reality of man-made and natural disasters, businesses and organizations across the U.S. are responding more to the need for business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) planning. Communication service providers (CSPs) with the most well-defined BC/DR portfolios are looking to take on a greater role in enterprise BC/DR, especially in cases where they are the primary network provider, according to Frost & Sullivan.

AT&T* has been awarded the Frost & Sullivan 2010 Product Leadership of the Year Award in Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Services North America, recognized for its business continuity services features and functionality, innovation, acceptance in the marketplace, customer value, and quality. “Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plans are about business survivability. In the case of a disruption, large or small, BC/DR needs to address topics, including technology, organizational decision-making, workflow continuity, and communication,” said Lynda Stadtmueller, Senior Research Analyst, Business Communications, Frost & Sullivan. “In defining its portfolio, AT&T has taken a broad, comprehensive view of BC/DR, offering a wide range of valuable services as well as professional consulting services and guidelines that help a company identify critical business processes that go beyond IT.”

SAN FRANCISCO -- Location Labs Inc. announces the launch of its Location-as-a-Service Platform today, providing location APIs for developers to build next-generation location features in their applications. The platform is a product of many decades of cumulative research by the company's UC Berkeley PhD-heavy engineering team, led by Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Scott Hotes.

"The continuous stream of location data now available on many smartphone devices presents both a tremendous opportunity as well as a unique challenge to mobile developers," noted Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of Location Labs. "We have created useful tools that help developers capitalize on the power of background processing of location data on multiple platforms."

The Location Labs Platform includes the following services for developers:

* Geofencing Service: Allows developers to leverage background processing on smart phones to create location-based triggers for their applications. For example, developers can create a Geofence around a favorite place and automatically "check-in" subscribers when they enter the place.
* Universal Location Service: Allows developers to locate over 180MM devices in real time through a cloud-based API. There is no download required for the end user, and the service can locate ALL types of devices: both smartphones and non-smartphones.
* Location Privacy Service: Provides developers a simple set of user interface widgets that lets users control how their location is shared, offering end-user control and transparency in sharing location. The Location Labs Privacy Service lets users opt-in or out of location sharing via SMS, mobile web, or even a web portal. Leverages industry-standard OAuth for easy integration.

Developers across the board are already using Location Labs' services to enhance and build innovative location-based applications in a variety of vertical markets including social, marketing, gaming, and logistics tracking. Location-based applications continue to explode in popularity among smartphone users; in fact, as indicated by a recent Apple iTunes report, an estimated 12% of the apps in the iPhone® App Store had a location component.

"The Location Labs Geofencing Service made it incredibly easy to implement geofencing for the upcoming update to our iPhone application," reported Navneet Aron, founder and CEO of MobiQpons, Inc. "Our icon will automatically light up when the user is nearby a local coupon—it's going to add an entire new dimension to our application."

Matt Chasen, CEO and founder of transport marketplace uShip, is leveraging the Universal Location Service. "In a matter of weeks, we began displaying the locations of transporters so customers could track their shipments through a map on our website. And there was no need for truckers on uShip to install or download an app on their devices—they simply opted-in for it to start working. Ultimately, uShip tracking has been a huge hit with all of our members."

Access to Location Lab's Location-as-a-Service Platform is currently in private beta and is available by invitation only. Public availability of the platform is expected in Q3, 2010. If you would like to request an invitation to the private beta, or would like to be notified when the platform is made public, visit: http://www.location-labs.com/signUpForm.php.

911ETA Receives International Accolades and More Than $500,000 Towards Product Development

Local company recognized as a runner-up in NAVTEQ's prestigious Global LBS Challenge.

DENVER -- 911ETA (Emergency Traffic Alerts) was named second runner-up in the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge. 911ETA is a Denver-based technology company, developing a system that would alert the motoring public about responding emergency vehicles. NAVTEQ is the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world. 911ETA was second runner-up out of nine finalists in a competition that received more than 200 entries.

B&C Electronic Engineering developed 911ETA after years of creating microprocessor-based controls for the embedded environment. Before starting B&C Electronic Engineering, its executives had extensive background working for emergency management and developing response policy for the Denver Fire Department. The combination of technology and emergency response lead B&C founders Juan Gutierrez and Carl Johnson to see a need for and conceive of 911ETA. Currently, 911ETA is in a pilot program with Denver West Metro Fire Department as the company continues to develop the product for a public launch.

"On average, response time of an emergency vehicle is increased by at least 43 seconds because of traffic delays. In an emergency, 43 seconds can be a lifetime. Plus, there are frequent accidents between responding emergency vehicles and drivers, creating unnecessary hazards. This technology is about public safety and saving lives," said Gutierrez. "The money we've won from the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge will allow us to further develop this product and launch it sooner."

The nine finalist applications in the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge were evaluated by a prominent panel of seven judges consisting of executives from leading wireless, technology and venture capital companies, including deCarta, HTC, Imagination Technologies, Intel, Microsoft Bing Maps, Sony Ericsson and Tanla.

The technology behind 911ETA is patent pending and leverages GPS technology to inform the motoring public of responding emergency vehicles in the area. When fully functional, the system will alert drivers via GPS, smartphones, and Personal Navigation Devices (PND) of any emergency vehicles responding to a call. Additionally, the system will reroute traffic around emergency scenes that are blocking streets or intersections. Ultimately, 911ETA will save drive time, fuel, greenhouse gases and most importantly, lives.

First launched in 2003, the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge is a worldwide competition conducted by NAVTEQ Network for Developers™ (NN4D), daring application developers around the world to build innovative location-based services (LBS) using dynamic positioning technology and NAVTEQ® maps. Integrating the accuracy and richness of NAVTEQ digital map data and LBS content facilitates the timely evolution of the next wave of location-aware applications. The Global LBS Challenge has become the premier event in the LBS industry for shining the spotlight on global LBS innovation and opportunity. Over 32 percent of the finalists from the past six years have gone on to receive venture capital funding or launch commercially-distributed applications. For more information on this year's competition, go to www.LBSChallenge.com.
