Hotmail gets Exchange ActiveSync support

Windows Live Hotmail is slated to officially receive Exchange ActiveSync support sometime this summer. However, while nothing has been announced, it appears this support is already active.

Liveside.net is reporting some users are having success in syncing their Hotmail accounts through ActiveSync. Through trial and error, the server address has been identified as m.hotmail.com, SSL should be enabled, and you leave the domain blank. Obviously you enter in your username and password accordingly.

If you're feeling adventurous, give it a try but remember, this isn't an official announcement so there may be performance issues present. Also, with ActiveSync only able to sync with one Exchange Server, you will have to delete your existing data. Make sure you have things backed up before giving it a whirl.

In reading the Windows Live Hotmail FAQ Sheet, calendar and contact support is also present with Exchange ActiveSync. There's no mention of task synchronization which may be a downside for some.

It's nice to see ActiveSync support coming to Windows Live and Hotmail. It may make the choice between Windows Live and Google a little more difficult to make.

Fedora 13 Boasts Many Leading-Edge Enhancements

Red Hat's Fedora 13 open-source software can serve in a full gamut of Linux roles, as long as users are prepared to upgrade their systems about once a year.

Since its first version, in 2003, Red Hat's Fedora Linux has been the best place to track what's on the leading edge of Linux and open-source software. Of course, the trouble with running on the leading edge is that it's easy to get cut, and the Fedora distribution's fast development pace has required a certain amount of bug-squashing tolerance from its users.

Fedora 13, which began shipping in late May, boasts many of the leading-edge enhancements—and few of the rough spots—that I've come to expect from the popular Linux-based operating system. In particular, I appreciated the work the Fedora team has done in the area of security and permissions, with progress toward more granular rights management through Fedora's PolicyKit framework, and an implementation of the SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) framework that remained, for the most part, tucked away unobtrusively in the background.

In addition to serving as a sort of first look at the latest and greatest in Linux and open-source software in general—and future Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases in particular—Fedora 13 can serve in a full gamut of Linux roles, as long as Fedora-embracing users are prepared to upgrade their systems about once a year.

For this reason, smoother edges notwithstanding, enterprises in search of a more long-lived Linux distribution for production roles would do best to turn to RHEL, or, for organizations prepared to provide their own support, the freely available RHEL clone CentOS.

The fast-moving nature of Fedora 13 fits best with desktop and developer workstation roles, where users are most likely to appreciate the up-to-date versions of the desktop-oriented open-source software that ships with the distribution, including Version 2.30 of the GNOME desktop environment, Version 3.2 of the OpenOffice.org productivity suite and Version 3.6.3 of the Firefox Web browser.

Fedora 13 is available as a free download from http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora, with separate versions that support the x86 and x86-64 platforms. Beginning with Fedora 13, the Power PC CPU architecture has been reduced to secondary architecture status, where its ongoing development will depend on volunteer efforts.

Searching for football connections

In a previous post, we talked about popular World Cup search queries. It turns out that people who search for one player frequently follow that immediately with a query for another player. In this post, we explore these timely connections between queries. Below, a thick line connects Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi because a lot of people followed a search for one of them with a search for the other. A thin line connects Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona because fewer people searched for them together.

Why are some players connected while others aren’t? Here are some of our discoveries:

The world’s most popular players are well-connected. The highest paid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) is tightly connected to other popular players including Lionel Messi (Argentina), Fernando Torres (Spain), Wayne Rooney (England) and Didier Drogba (CĆ“te d'Ivoire). These players form a nucleus connecting all the other players.

A country’s players are usually connected—but not always. For example, Arjen Robben connects all the Netherlands players. In contrast, Ronaldo connects Brazilian player KakĆ” to his teammates Robinho, Nilmar and Grafite. France’s players Thierry Henry and Yoann Gourcuff are likewise connected through Ronaldo.

Players in the same football club are connected. Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard play together on Chelsea but represent CĆ“te d'Ivoire and England in the World Cup. Similarly, Steven Gerrard (England) and Fernando Torres (Spain) both play for Liverpool.

If you’re interested in exploring how players connect to each other, try searching for a player’s name using Google Insights for Search and look at the “Top searches” in the bottom left to see if other footballers are listed. For example, Clint Dempsey, the U.S. player who made the match-tying goal against England last Saturday, is connected to Landon Donovan.

Google Apps highlights – 6/18/2010

Over the last couple of weeks we introduced several new features to Google Docs, and made updates to Gmail, Buzz and Blogger. The Google Apps Marketplace expanded, and we brought many new businesses and schools onboard. Here’s the scoop:

New Google Docs editors rolling out to everyone
Just a couple months ago we started previewing Google Docs’ new editors for documents and spreadsheets, and on Monday we began turning on these faster, more feature-rich editors for everyone. In new documents, you’ll see character-by-character real-time collaboration, a ruler for custom margins and tab stops, and the files you import from your computer will be much higher quality. The new version of spreadsheets is faster, and includes a formula editing bar, cell auto-complete and much more. If your university, employer or organization provides you with a Google Docs account, you’ll start seeing the new editors by default in the coming weeks, too.

New sharing settings in Google Docs
Just yesterday we launched a streamlined way to share your files more easily in Google Docs. You can set a document, spreadsheet, presentation or drawing to be “Private,” available to “Anyone with the link,” or “Public on the web,” and then customize who has access by inviting specific collaborators. If you’re using Google Docs at work or at school, you’ll also see options that make it easy to share your files just with other people within your organization. Learn more about the new sharing options on the Google Docs blog.

New features for drawings in Google Docs
We introduced several new features for the drawings editor in Google Docs, too. Now you can center objects on the page, resize your entire canvas, view thumbnails of your drawings in your doc list, search across your drawings by text contained within and quickly view a list of handy editing keyboard shortcuts. We also added the ability for you to share drawings in the Google Docs template gallery, so other people around the world can use your creations.

Blogger Template Designer available to all
Back in March we introduced Blogger Template Designer in Blogger in Draft, and last week we made it available to everyone. You can choose from more than 19 stock templates and further customize your design with hundreds of free, professional background images, custom color schemes and pixel-perfect layout manipulation. Customizing your blog and making it “your own” is now much easier.

Google Maps previews in Gmail and Buzz
Last week, we added a new Labs feature in Gmail that automatically displays a Google Map below messages that contain street addresses—saving you the trouble of copying and pasting of addresses from Gmail to Google Maps. You can enable this feature and many others from the Labs tab under Gmail Settings. Google Buzz also integrates Google Maps now too; when your buzz includes a Google Maps link, you’ll automatically see an image of the map that you can choose to include in your post.

Apps Marketplace
For the businesses, schools and organizations using Google Apps, cloud-based functionality continues to expand through the Google Apps Marketplace. There, developers around the world can offer business- and process-enhancing apps that seamlessly integrate with Google Apps. The Marketplace has everything from accounting applications and CRM solutions to marketing automation and project workflow tools. Last week we added five new applications, and this Tuesday we tacked on over a dozen more.

Who’s gone Google?
We’re thrilled to welcome Brady Corporation, a globally distributed safety and security products company with more than 7,000 employees and 90 globally distributed business locations, to Google Apps. Cost savings were a factor in the decision, but Brady’s IT team chose Google Apps to simplify their worldwide IT operations, to streamline the integration of future acquisitions and to offer employees advanced sharing features like real-time collaboration.

In addition to the big guys, tens of thousands more small and medium size businesses have also gone Google since our last update, including Hiatus Spa + Retreat, Goble & Associates and MĆ©todo DeRose Matosinhos. Welcome!

And school’s out for summer, but many colleges and universities are using the quiet months to reinvigorate their student technology. Sonoma State University, Meharry Medical College, Tokyo Keizai University (translated), Santa Fe Community College, Great Basin College and Colby College are all going Google.

Whether your company or school has already gone Google or if you’re just starting to contemplate the move, tune into our live webcast next Tuesday, June 22 at 9:00 am PDT to hear more about the improvements and new features we’ve added to Google Apps during the first half of 2010.

For more details and updates from the Apps team, head on over to the Google Apps Blog.

Welcome to the Device Tune-up Beta - Info and FAQ's

Background:
T-Mobile is continually looking for ways to bring new innovation to our customers. Within the My Account application, we are adding new functionality in the My Device section called Device Tune-up. Device Tune-up is built to run in the background at all times and ‘tune-up’ the device by closing unused services that are running.

Device Tune-up is different from most task killers because it does not require you to do anything. Device Tune-up will default to 'on'. While on, Device Tune-up proactively closes services to help the device and battery perform at their best. Most pre-loaded applications will not be affected by Device Tune-up. For our non-technical users, this may mean you never even realize Device Tune-up is running; your device may simply run better.

Getting Help & Providing Feedback:
Do not contact Customer Care for help or feedback regarding the Device Tune-up Beta.

We are looking for as much feedback as we can get! If you need any help at all, please post any questions, issues or suggestions you have in our Device Tune-up Beta board. We will do our best to help you as quickly as we can. :smileyhappy:

Requirements:
* This beta will work on all T-Mobile Android devices running 2.1 and below. If installed on a device using 2.2, the you may see the My Device BETA icon but you will not have the Device Tune-up functionality.
* This beta has not been tested on any devices running custom software outside of T-Mobile approved versions. It is recommended you do not install this beta if you are running a custom ROM.

Logitech Revue with Google TV

Yes, it’s true. The name of our Google TV companion box will be Logitech Revue with Google TV.

Why did we choose Logitech Revue?

At Logitech, we’re known for certain kinds of products – peripherals, video calling, entertainment control, streaming media….

Logitech Revue does everything we’re known for and more. So it couldn’t just be the Harmony Box or Squeezebox TV or, even worse, the Logitech TV Hub (although believe me, we’ve discussed them all).
The meaning of Revue is a type of multi-act theatrical entertainment that combined music, dance and sketches – wildly popular between 1910 and 1930.

Logitech Revue is a companion box and controller that brings the experience of Google TV to your TV screen. It combines everything on the Web, cable or satellite content, apps, video calling and more that will be wildly popular between 2010 and 2030, until we reinvent interaction again.

And there you have it – Logitech Revue with Google TV. We can’t wait to tell you more about it this fall.
In the meantime, to get all the latest updates about Logitech Revue with Google TV, please sign up at logitech.com/news/googletv.

Android Owners Can Now Listen to Over 50,000 Radio Stations and Shows on WunderRadio – Available in the Android Market for $6.99

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Weather Underground launched its popular mobile application, WunderRadio, for the Android platform, providing users with the same interactive features and reliable radio streams that iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile owners already enjoy. The application is available in the Android Market for $6.99.

Awarded the title of Best iPhone Radio Application (terrestrial division) at last year’s MacWorld Expo and dubbed the “Best radio hub around” by Rolling Stone magazine, WunderRadio has already been downloaded by over 400,000 iPhone users who use it to listen to AM/FM and Internet radio stations from across the world. The Windows Mobile version of the app won Handango’s award for Best Entertainment App in 2009.

Android owners can now browse the enormous directory provided by RadioTime, to find radio stations that meet their needs and tastes, searching by location and over 400 different genres such as music, talk, sports and entertainment. Users can save presets for faster tuning to their favorite stations and use the RadioTime Guide to automatically detect what is airing on their local stations, browse by affiliates like the BBC, AOL Radio, Bloomberg or Sirius and search for specific programs or on-air personalities.

“The multi-tasking capabilities of the Android platform showcase the many interactive features of WunderRadio,” said Josh Carroll, President of Jeyo, the developer of the Android version of the software. “Users can access the built-in Twitter directory to connect with an on-air DJ, while streaming their favorite station in the background, and never miss an e-mail or phone call.”

WunderRadio for Android provides playback of more media types including global broadcasts and podcasts and easily connects to your Bluetooth speaker system or headset. It also allows users to listen to radio in the background while using other applications on the phone and elegantly handles incoming calls. Additionally, when listening to music, the application provides song information and convenient links to the iTunes Store.

“With the addition of the Android version, WunderRadio is now accessible to the majority of smart phone users and continues to set a new standard for listening to radio on mobile devices,” said Alan Steremberg, President of Weather Underground, the developers of the original application.

Bill Moore, CEO, RadioTime, explains: “WunderRadio leverages the RadioTime Guide to provide a wider selection of stations than any other tuner available for Android. Everything that made WunderRadio for the iPhone and Windows Mobile so popular is available for Android: the most comprehensive worldwide channel list, a wide range of audio formats, reliable listening and integration with your device.”

If you would like a free version of WunderRadio for Android to review, please email press@wunderground.com.

HTC threatens handset hackers with legal action for distributing ROMs

Leaks happen — especially in the mobile world. There are just too many people involved in the process of creating a mobile device to keep things under wraps. Take any given new phone’s OS installation package (known as its “ROM”), for example; when something is as easily copied and distributed as any other piece of software, it’s bound to find its way out eventually.

When these ROMs pop up on developer/hacker forums, it’s generally no big deal — in most cases, the manufacturer doesn’t notice or, if they do, don’t bother to do anything about it. Once someone makes an effort to gather up all these ROMs and distribute them from one unified outlet, however, things get hairy. Such is the case for the popular HTC ROM distribution site Shipped-ROMs, who allegedly just received a Cease & Desist order straight from the desk of HTC’s Legal Counsel.

According to HTC, Shipped-ROMs is stepping out of line by “illegal copying … HTC¡¦s original art work.” Do they use “art work” literally (as in the visuals)? Or are they ambiguously using the term to classify all of their code and other work as art? Who knows. One way or another, HTC is pissed.

If nothing else, you’ve got to praise HTC for their speed: the site, operated by the increasingly well-known hardware hacker Conflipper, is only about a month old. More impressive than HTC’s speed, however, is the site’s: in that month, they’ve managed to accumulate ROMs for just about every HTC handset imaginable, from antiques like the MDA Compact to the just-friggin’-lanched HTC Aria.

So, who does one root for? On one hand, these ROMs allow the hacking community to “cook” up their own custom installs for the hardcore crowd, often unlocking or adding in features that the manufacturer didn’t — and rarely, if ever, do these leaks result in anything malicious trickling down to the end user. On the other, these ROMs are jam-packed with HTC’s intellectual property, which they’ve got some duty to protect.

In the end, I’ll always be rooting for the little guy. My time with a number of HTC devices has been vastly improved by the efforts of the faceless geniuses in the hacking community. If HTC decides to make a misguided effort to stop the hacking community that satiates their poweruser’s thirsts, so be it — but this is the wrong way to go about it. C&D’ing one site won’t do a damn thing; these ROMs will be up on another site (or a torrent tracker, or any one of a bajillion other distribution methods) in the blink of an eye. It’s the classic Napster problem; in making a fuss about these ROMs, you’ve just alerted a bunch of people to their existence. Oh well.

The full text of the C&D can be read at Shipped-Roms. Conflipper says he’ll “do what he can” to keep the site online, but things aren’t looking too good.

The 100% Mobile Xbox Live Project

[Proof of Concept] We played Xbox Live on the middle of a bridge on top of the Missouri River via my Droid Incredible's Internet connection. This is the result of my project I've been working on for the past 3 weeks.

How it works: The actual Pod is built from a standard storage rack which consists of a top & bottom rack with 4 legs. On each corner, I took twine, and connected the top rack with the bottom. This prevented the bottom rack from falling out when we lifted it up. On the bottom rack, I have my APC UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) which powers everything on the Pod via it's built-in battery which is charged prior to the trip. (It can also be charged in the car via a power inverter plugged into a standard cigarette lighter in the car.) Also on the bottom rack is the Xbox 360, 13" MacBook Pro, (Which is running Windows 7 Ultimate) and the Bose Companion 3 Subwoofer. On the top rack, there is a 19" 720p Samsung HDTV, my HTC Droid Incredible, and 2 satellite speakers (which are connected to the sub below)

How it really works...:
My Xbox 360 is connected, via ethernet cable, to my 13" MacBook Pro which is running Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer is connected, via USB, to my HTC Droid Incredible. The Incredible provides internet to the computer via the PDAnet application. The computer then bridges the connection it's receiving from the phone with the Xbox 360. (Phone --) Computer --) Xbox 360) This allows the Xbox to connect to Xbox Live anywhere the phone has a data connection. I built this Pod so I can bring everything with me. It's portable, so I can basically play Xbox Live, anywhere. Everything is powered via the UPS, and that can be recharged in the car while in transit. So really, this is the 100% Mobile Xbox Live Experience.

It should be noted that I bought the tethering service from Verizon before I did this.

Android Market not available on Google TV devices this year

The Logitech Revue is a big reason to get excited about Google TV, but Android fans may be disappointed with the service this year. Something we completely failed to report during the Google TV announcement was the fact that Android Market will not be available on any of the devices planned to launch this fall.

Not only will the Android Market not be included, but Android application downloads from a URL will not be officially supported. Only pre-installed applications will be available when Google TV launches.

So what is the hold up? Google wants to allow developers adequate time to test their apps so that users enjoy the best possible experience. The Google TV SDK add-on will not be available till early 2011 and then Google will roll out the Market through a future over-the-air upgrade.

It’s not clear if Google will outright block manual installation of Android apk files, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do. I’m sure hackers will fall in love with these devices, but Google does not plan to release the source code for Google TV till sometime next year so it could be a difficult road.

If you were expecting the Android Market on your TV this year, does this news affect your buying decision at all?

New Foursquare update lets you flag venue info on the fly

An update to Foursquare just came down the pike, and this one's a goody if you're anal about your check-ins. (Wonder which side of the fence we're about to be on?) You now have the ability to fix those blasted incorrect, inaccurate or otherwise just plain wrong locations.

Now your old friend Jeremy, who fled his beloved hometown for the Midwest, can't become mayor of his forsaken airport merely because he misspelled it and you were too squinty-eyed for your 6:30 a.m. flight to notice and check in at the proper location. (Hey, warned you about our anal-check-in thing.)

Anyhoo, you can now tell Foursquare of your buddy's transgressions and suggest that the venue info be flagged, market it as closed, as in incorrect address or as a duplicate.

Google music store could launch this fall

With the iTunes' banner waving supremely over the digital music landscape, Google continues to build its own music service, CNET has learned.

According to multiple music industry sources, Google could launch a music service that offers song downloads and streaming music as early as this fall.

Google has already signaled that it wishes to give users of phones equipped with Google's Android operating system a better music offering. At Google's I/O conference last month, the search engine offered attendees a demonstration of a Web-based iTunes competitor. Also TechCrunch reported two weeks ago that it discovered a "Google Music" logo hosted on Google's domain.

But Google's plans go beyond Android, say music sector insiders. CNET has learned that Google first stoked excitement among executives at some of the top four major labels during the Consumer Electronics Show in January. That's where they revealed some of the features that a Google music store might include, such as tying digital downloads and streaming music to Google's search results.

Google did not respond to interview requests.

Google knows music
Google first tried wedding songs to search last fall. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company launched Music Onebox and enabled people searching for song titles to stream the tunes via online music stores Lala.com and iLike. The experiment seemed to be derailed after those companies were acquired by competitors; Apple and MySpace respectively.

A Google-backed challenge to Apple's dominance of legal online music sales would be warmly welcomed by the top labels. They have tried for years to convince heavy hitters such as Google, Facebook, and AOL to take on iTunes.

The other top digital music stores, Amazon and MySpace Music, have yet to cut into Apple's huge market share. Those two big names, however, don't possess Google's reach with Web consumers.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt can already boast some success in music with YouTube. Before three of the four top labels launched Vevo and took control of their videos, YouTube was by far the Web's most successful streaming music service. Zahavah Levine, YouTube's general counsel who previously worked with RealNetworks' Rhapsody music subscription service, has a prominent role in helping to develop Google's new music store, the sources said.

The other piece of Google's music puzzle is software company Simplify Media, which Google acquired earlier this year after kicking the tires on several cloud-based media services. Simplify enabled PC and Mac users to stream songs from their computer-based iTunes or WinAmp libraries to other Web-enabled devices. Vic Gundotra, a Google engineering exec, said during I/O that Google would build Simplify Media's technology into a future version of the Android OS and thereby boost Android's music features.

Google is racing iTunes to be first with a cloud service. Sources in the music and movie sectors have said Apple is working on a Web-based iTunes service that could enable users to store music and video on digital shelves and then stream the content to Web-enabled devices.

So, while Apple works on a cloud service, CEO Steve Jobs might be surprised to find Google has begun serenading iTunes users.

Android Team “Laser Focused” On The User Experience For Next Release

Google’s Android team has been pushing new versions of the operating system at a furious pace since the first Android device hit the market in 2008. Lots of features have been added over the last couple of years. But the user experience hasn’t evolved much.

That’s all going to change in the next version, we’ve heard from multiple sources close to Google.

The team more or less has the core features they want at this point, say our sources, although more tweaks are certainly coming. But Google wants to put an end to the desire of handset manufacturers and carriers to add their own UI layer on top of Google – things like Sense, Motoblur, Ninjablur, etc.

Most of the time their shells aren’t all that great anyway (see HTC EVO), and they tend to slow down the device.

Google is focusing the bulk of its efforts on the user experience for the upcoming Gingerbread release to counter this. And they want to get the Android experience closer to the iPhone.

It’s unlikely that third parties will ever completely resist the temptation to meddle to differentiate their products and to get more control over the user. But Google’s goal is to make those “skins” as pointless as possible.

That’s a big goal, particularly since Android is a flexible operating system that is designed to handle a variety of hardware options. When you don’t lock down the hardware it’s very hard to make the UI perfect. Which is why Apple’s Macs, with locked down hardware, have always been a better experience than the hugely hardware-flexible Windows operating system.

Android Devices: Droid Dominant, Evo Catches Nexus

Which Android-based smartphones are ruling the market? According to new data from online ad network Chitika, the Motorola Droid is by far the most popular handset, and Sprint’s newly released HTC Evo has made enough of a splash to catch the Google-branded Nexus One.

Android Distro by Handset

The Droid’s dominance is no surprise – the device has been in the market since November of 2009, backed by an overwhelming advertising and marketing campaign and bolstered by the tech frenzy of holiday shopping. It currently accounts for just over a third of all Android traffic. What is surprising is that the Evo – launched on June 4th – has already reached 1.93% of the Android market, swiftly catching up with the Nexus One (2% of the market), Google’s first self-branded and self-promoted mobile device.

Among the cellular networks, Verizon has so far taken the most advantage of Android’s popularity, with Verizon phones accounting for 49% of Android traffic coming into the Chitika network. T-Mobile ranks second with 23%, followed by Sprint with 19%. AT&T, which has seen great success as the iPhone’s exclusive network, contributed a mere 1.1% of Android traffic to the sample looked at for this study – even less than U.S. Cellular, which clocked in with 1.4%.

Android Distro by Carrier

In order to come up with these results, Chitika looked at a sample of 821,201 impressions from the first two weeks of June coming into their advertising network. It should be noted that, true to Android’s open-source and incredibly diverse nature, some 8% of the operating system’s traffic in the sample was from unrecognizable devices or devices with extremely low usage. Cellular provider market share is based on the provider most strongly associated with individual handsets (for the purposes of this study, Nexus One is considered a T-Mobile device).

With the official idea of the telephone of iPhone 4 somewhat surprising was the absence of model with the capacity of storage 64 GB, although the corresponding module was presented by the company Of toshiba of also in December last year. However, it cannot be excluded that about the telephones and the plane-tables with 64 GB of the built-in memory we still will hear, and at the same time also about the models with the doubly large volume. Today the company Of toshiba officially represented the modules NAND Of flash with capacity 128 GB. The new modules of memory, as it communicates, ideally will approach for equipping by them of both the cell phones and plane-tables and other devices, by which is required the large volume with maximum compactness.

The sizes of 128 GB of the modules of the memory Of toshiba are 17 x of 22 x of 1.4 mm and consist of the blocks of equivalent 8 GB to the modules NAND of memory by the company for 32 nm produced to technical process. In the same physical volume it was possible to place the controller, which makes it possible not only to reduce the number of errors with the work of memory, but also to reduce the cost of chip itself. Orders for iPhone 4 too much and he does stay with the output?

Initially it was planned, which into sale of iPhone 4 will enter on June 24 and at the same time it will be obtained those designed of [predzakaz]. At first the American and European on-line stores Of apple they transferred the period of the delivery of the previously ordered telephones since June 24 on July 2. But the new displacement of periods today in the American store occurred. Now according to the data OF US Of apple Of store the delivery of ordered iPhone 4 will begin not previously on July 14. The sites of British and French departments thus far continue to indicate on July 2, but it is highly improbable that iPhone will leave in Europe earlier than to the USA.

The official commentaries apropos of delay it did not act, but it became yesterday known that the company Of apple as in the case with the plane-tables of iPad underestimated the popularity of its devices. Initial calculation was built on what from the subscribers of operator AT&T (precisely through its network it realizes iPhone 4 V of the USA) not more than 600 000 orders will enter; however, this number was already achieved, but orders continue to enter. It is obvious that to the outlined date on June 24 Apple simply cannot place the larger number of apparatuses. There is not relative to a quantity of [predzakazov] in Europe of official information.

MeeGo Handset Interaction Guidelines
Introduction
How to use this document

Purpose Ultimately this document will act as a guide for both Nokia services and 3rd parties who wish to design an application for MeeGo devices. This document is written primarily for interaction and visual designers. Visual design guidelines may be added on a future version, or may also be a companion document.

This is not a Specification Document This is not meant to replace detailed technical specifications. Instead, it is meant to represent a description of the overall interaction model for MeeGo in an at-a-glance fashion. It is the expectation that technical specifications will be available as a companion to this document, including a detailed description of each available tool and a recommendation of when to use it.
Introducing MeeGo

MeeGo has been designed for the new mobile world, where people are at the center of fast flowing streams of information, where they expect to tailor their device with a myriad of applications and where new economies are evolving around those applications.

These guidelines have been written to help you design and develop applications for the new mobile world.

MeeGo is a direct touch UI, meaning that users manipulate objects, such as a thumbnail of an image, directly through touch interactions. Content is surfaced and navigation hierarchies should be shallow and accessed through simple navigation systems. In addition to direct touch, MeeGo is optimized for multi-tasking usage and provides a rich platform integrated Applications.

The MeeGo interface is scalable for different screen sizes, resolutions, and aspect ratios and it supports both portrait and landscape orientations.
What Makes MeeGo Great?

Multi-tasking People’s daily lives are complex and busy. We tend to do a lot of things at once and often the things we want to do on our mobile devices – making an appointment over the phone, sending a link to a friend, finding a listing on the map - involve two or more of its applications. The heart of the MeeGo UI is the switcher, which allows people to quickly move around the applications they need to get something done.

Connected, vibrant and alive MeeGo is designed to be connected to the web all the time. MeeGo’s applications should feel ‘alive’ with activity, making the mobile device a true life hub. This empowers people and makes them feel connected.

Personal and expandable MeeGo provides users the ability to make the device their own by adding applications, extending applications, and by easily arranging quick access to favorite applications. Personal touches can be added through content and social feeds, profile customization, and standard features, such as ringtones and wallpaper.

Comes with Ovi Understanding that a mobile device is so much more than calls and text messages is key to MeeGo’s value. Ovi services and applications feel like part of the device because they are integrated with core components like search and sharing through integration with each other, allowing people to flow across several applications and services to do what they need to do. The Ovi store helps people discover and expand their device, offering a large range of applications and extensions.
Design Principles

Direct Objects are manipulated directly with your finger. Never hide object-related functions away from the main object. Hiding related functions/actions in menus should be avoided. All actions should take place near the object itself. Touch is an analog control (well, almost).

Responsive Direct UI must give immediate feedback to the user’s actions. When scrolling or panning, the moved objects need to follow user’s finger without a noticeable lag. Visual, audio, and haptic feedback must feel that they are in perfect synch. The multimedia playback has high resolution and frame rate that gives a feeling of performance.

Simply beautiful The UI must please all senses. Visual, aural, and haptic feedback must be beautiful, yet simple. Visual and aural (and haptic) metaphors and effects must be consistent. Decoration should have meaning, for example show what can be touched. The UI is alive, for example showing subtle animations.

True Human Design The key attributes of MeeGo's design vision are: human, simple, and friendly. MeeGo prioritizes people over any other content.

Getting the basics right People still need to meet the demands of every day life, calling their mom, remembering the milk, and messaging a colleague from the bus stop. MeeGo should make these things a joy and never let its power get in the way.

NAVTEQ Expands Coverage in Eastern Europe, Middle East

Digital map maker NAVTEQ announced this week a range of new map releases and improvements across Eastern Europe and Middle East, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria.

Full navigable map in Egypt
NAVTEQ accelerated its map building program last year in Egypt when the government allowed GPS in mobile phones and navigation systems. The digital map maker now offers coverage of the country's entire road network of around 75,000 kilometers. Stretching from the Mediterranean Sea in the North to the Aswan Dam in the south, the map includes over 75,000 Points of Interest (POIs). In addition, the database features over 90 3D Landmarks of well-known locations in 14 key cities and tourist sites such as the Great Sphinx in Giza and the El Karnak Temple in Luxor.

New addressing system in Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia NAVTEQ has made significant changes to accommodate changes in the address system. Traditionally, there has not been a home and street address structure with people depending on Post Box numbers to receive mail. As a result they have tended to use POIs rather than addresses to select a destination in a navigation system. To match this local habit NAVTEQ has increased the number of POI to nearly 150,000.

The new Saudi Post addressing system has now assigned a unique grid number to every residential house and commercial or government building. So NAVTEQ has also developed a map database based on that system. Once people become familiar with the new Wasel addresses, they will be able to use them to select destinations in their navigation systems and be routed directly from door to door.

“In addition to the work in Saudi Arabia, other recent developments include the first NAVTEQ Discover Cities product in the Middle East with the completion of a pedestrian map of Dubai." explained Frank Pauli, vice president EMEA map & content products.

Bulgaria
NAVTEQ also has completed its full navigable map coverage of Bulgaria. Drivers will now have access to routing along the country's entire road network of nearly 100,000 kilometers. The company has gathered over 33,000 Points of Interest too.

The NAVTEQ map links seamlessly to the road networks of the five bordering countries: Romania, Serbia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey.

The map also features many attributes to support efficient routing, including speed limits, stop signs and traffic signals. NAVTEQ is also offering truck-specific attributes for routing large vehicles on the main road network. The data includes legal, height, width, weight, hazardous materials and time or date restrictions.

"We have established a base in Sofia as local presence is a key factor in understanding and incorporating country specific nuances whilst maintaining the company's global specification and high standards: we recognise the importance of local intelligence," commented Frank Pauli.

In the rest of Eastern Europe, NAVTEQ already has full coverage of Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

NAVTEQ map analyists are also continuing to expand coverage in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, the Ukraine and Romania. As an example, NAVTEQ now has over 167,000 kilometers of road network in its Romanian database.

Gigabyte GSmart S1205 review: A smart duo

Gsmarena have posted a review of the Gigabyte GSmart S1205. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and their final impression.

Key features:
* 3.2" 65K-color resistive touchscreen at WQVGA resolution
* Dual-SIM dual standby quad-band GSM/EDGE support
* Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional OS with Smart Pack UI
* MediaTek MT6516 416MHz CPU
* 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM
* 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera and VGA@30fps video
* Wi-Fi connectivity
* FM radio with RDS
* Stereo Bluetooth 2.1, standard microUSB port
* GPS receiver
* 3.5mm audio jack
* Office document viewer and editor
* Good audio quality

Main disadvantages:
* Low-end display resolution
* Poor sunlight legibility
* Smudge-prone screen surface
* No 3G connectivity
* No Back button
* Task manager buried deep in the Settings menu

The Gigabyte GSmart 1205 isn’t a phone you’ll instantly like. The cheap finish and the poor screen are no match for most other PocketPC’s out there, not even some pretty old ones.

But then, it’s not this phone’s job to lure and seduce. It’s simply waiting to be discovered by the practical buyer. It may take a while before you know it’s a PocketPC, and Dual SIM isn’t inscribed in gilded letters. But that’s what it is – a dual SIM PocketPC. Now, good luck trying to beat that, HTC, Sony Ericsson and the like.

Now, not only is the Gigabyte GSmart 1205 a dual SIM PocketPC – it’s one of the cheapest PocketPCs ever. Seems the right thing to do really when you know you can’t compete with HDs and XPERIAs. A bargain is welcome – no doubt about that, but the GSmart 1205 is cheap and it means it.

And we think it’s up to every user to make up their mind about all the implied compromises.
Good's Bad's
Cheap And it looks it
Dual SIM No 3G
Fair dual SIM management Poor screen, bad graphics
GPS Choppy performance
Wi-Fi Limited video codec support
Smart Pack UI with nice customization options Dated OS version
Full Office Package Not quite thumbable, stylus often a must
Reasonable video, VGA @ 30 fps Poor application package
Good battery life Poor still imaging

There isn’t much going on in the dual SIM market, and the GSmart S1205 is virtually competition-free considering it’s a smartphone too. Potential shoppers should have that in mind too.

The year-old Acer DX900 is in fact the only real rival. It has a smaller but higher-res display, faster processor and 3G connectivity with HSDPA support. The Acer runs the older Windows Mobile 6.1 though. Available for only about 30 euro more than Gigabyte’s phone, the Acer DX900 is worth checking out.

The LG GX500 and Samsung B5722 are feature phones with dual SIM support. The LG handset comes with Wi-Fi and a similar screen, while the Samsung’s B5722 has no premium features and a smaller QVGA display. The LG GX500 is priced about the same as the GSmart S1205, so the smartphone is perhaps the better choice. Samsung B5722 on the other hand is some 70 euro cheaper and budget-conscious users might want to consider.

Finally, there’s plenty of decent smartphones on offer in this price range. If dual-SIM isn’t a must, you’ll do well to check out the equally priced HTC Tattoo and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

The Gigabyte GSmart S1205 is an easy phone to bash. There’re so many things about it that are not up to scratch. But in the same time it is as good as bullet-proof thanks to a single unique feature. It always takes something extra to keep a phone afloat – be it looks, imaging, you name it. Dual-SIM is the insurance policy of the Gigabyte Gsmart S1205. The gentle price tag gives it a good start. It isn’t going anywhere further than its narrow market niche. But it’s a niche it can call its won.
