Apple sells 600,000 iPhone 4s in one day

Websites crash in the US and UK as Apple’s latest device goes on sale.

Apple sold 600,000 iPhone 4s in one day on Tuesday, beating its previous record.

Ordering websites crashed in both the UK and the US as the device went on sale. When the iPhone 3GS went on sale last year, one million were sold in its first three days - but it debuted in eight countries, and the iPhone 4 has only gone on sale in five.

In the UK, the cheapest version Apple is offering customers is the Sim-free deal for £499 through its online store, which crashed as overwhelming demand hit the manufacturer.

Apple said it was the largest number of pre-orders it had ever taken in a single day and was ‘far higher than we anticipated’.

Orange revealed its UK iPhone 4 tariffs yesterday, with the cheapest model only available for free on a two year, £75 per month contract. The operator is offering the handset for £480 on its pay as you go animal tariffs.

The device will cost £29 on a £45 per month, 24 month contract. It will cost £89 on a £40 tariff, £119 on a £35 tariff, and £169 on a £30 per month deal.

Meanwhile, Orange has reduced the price of the older 3GS model, which is now free on a £35 per month, two year contract.
