Android Steals Market Share from iPhone

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Online tracking firm Quantcast has just released new data that shows mobile operating systems' current market share in North America, with the newly renamed "iOS" (originally called "iPhone OS" - the OS powering the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) in the lead...by miles. The Apple mobile OS dominates its competitors with a huge chunk of mobile market share, at 60%.

But don't let these numbers fool you. It's not how much or how little of the mobile landscape each OS has claim to, but how fast this picture has changed over the preceding months. The real winner here is Android, the OS whose rapid gains have come at Apple's expense.
Only 20% for Android?

The latest stats - 58.8% for iOS, 19.9% for Android - may be a bit of an initial letdown for Android fanboys who didn't read through the whole report. (And yes, Google's mobile operating system now has its own fanboys too, sporting a level of fanaticism once seen only among those who bought Apple products.)

Android has just 20% market share? What? When there are 8.7 million Android handsets here in the U.S. compared with 10.7 million iPhones? Shouldn't the numbers be a bit closer? Well, if you were only comparing mobile phones to mobile phones, they would be.

In this case, though, Quantcast is comparing mobile operating system market share and that means counting the web surfing done by both the iPod Touch and the iPad, too. Combined with the iPhone device count, you're looking at 18.3 million unique "iOS" devices. And the iPad is built for Web browsing.

Now, whether or not we should even be counting the iPad when talking about "mobile" market share is a debate for another day (are tablets more computer than mobile handheld?). Today, the big takeaway from the report shouldn't be the numbers themselves, rather how they've changed.
When it Comes to Growth, the Winner is Android

As the Quantcast blog post explains, "the biggest winner is clearly Google's Android." How can this be?

The fact is that Google's mobile OS has climbed rapidly over the prior months, having gone from around 5% in January 2009 to 20% in May 2010, stealing away market share from other mobile OS's, most notably Apple's, whose iOS dropped from 75% share to 59% during that same time frame.

Also of note, these numbers were calculated prior to the EVO's launch, the highly anticipated "4G" Android smartphone which sold out within days of its launch. Adding that into the fold, the next Quantcast report will likely offer even more gains for Android at iOS's expense.

Sprint cans employee for leaking EVO 4G sales numbers

The tales surrounding the launch of the EVO 4G have been intriguing, to say the least. On June 4th, the device launched. By June 7th, Sprint was touting the phone’s sales as mammoth, claiming that it had broken their previous one-day sales records (as held by the Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre) by as much as 3 times. Just two days later, they recanted that story, declaring that they had “erred” in their original estimations, and that the sales numbers were inline with those of their previous top sellers.

There was, however, a bit of the story which we didn’t see: the part where a Sprint employee used the inventory system to figure out exactly how many EVO 4Gs were sold and posted that number online, resulting in a speedy investigation by Sprint HQ and the employee’s immediate termination.

We’ve reached out to Sprint for a comment on the matter, but here’s the story as we’re hearing it so far from a trusted source: On the afternoon of June 6th (before Sprint had released any sales numbers), a Sprint retail employee posted a note to the growingly infamous phone hacking forum, XDA-Developers, with sales figure details gleaned from their system. The post has since been removed, but bits of it are still lingering in Google’s cache:

“according to sprint we as a [company] have sold 66,483 theres a whole bunch of stores though that dont have any more inventory i dont think any major city sprint does”

According to this employee’s perusing, Sprint had dished out roughly 66.5 thousand EVO 4Gs after a little more than two days following launch. (Note that, as far as I know, this number only accounts for Sprint stores — not third party sellers like WalMart, RadioShack, etc. Even then, this number could be incorrect, depending on how the employee uncovered the number and any updating latency involved. I doubt Sprint’s going to confirm its accuracy, so take it with a grain of salt.)

Now, this post went mostly unnoticed by blogs and other media outlets — but it didn’t go unnoticed by Sprint HQ. As leaks are becoming more and more prevalent, carriers and manufacturers are dedicating more resources toward keeping an eye on forums like these for any breadcrumbs leading back to the source. Unfortunately for this given leakster, the breadcrumbs were all there.

Within a few days, an internal Sprint team (which, we’re told, is known around the carrier as “Forensics”) had traced the employee back to his Florida store. One of Sprint’s internal security task force members was immediately flown from Kansas to Florida; the employee was pulled in, their posting habits literally laid all out on the table, and they were terminated on the spot.

We see leaks each and every day; they are, after all, the lifeblood of any good gadget blog. Just because they’re a regular occurrence, however, doesn’t mean that employers are going to let them slide. They’re well within their rights to let any red-handed info-leakers go — and if any NDAs are involved, there very well could be some litigation involved. If the breadcrumbs are there, they’ll find’em.

Android Now Outselling iPhone [REPORT]

Smartphones carrying Google’s Android operating system outsold the iPhone in the first quarter of 2010, according to new research out today from NPD.

During the quarter, Android (Android) handsets accounted for 28% of smartphone sales, beating out iPhone OS and its 21% share. BlackBerry was the bestselling OS, with its devices capturing 36% of the market. NPD attributes the shift to strong sales of the Motorola Droid and Droid Eris.

The news follows a report last month from AdMob that showed Android’s share of the mobile OS market had actually grown past that of iPhone OS, at least in the U.S. Worldwide, iPhone OS still has a big lead, however, with 46% share compared to Android’s 25%. AdMob’s data is based on ad requests across mobile websites and applications.

With the new Droid Incredible reportedly selling quite well, this trend may continue in the near-term. However, the fourth-generation iPhone is expected to debut next month. Rumors that the iPhone will soon come to Verizon also continue to intensify, with that carrier’s customers indicating they are ready to welcome the device with open arms. If all of that happens, the numbers could quickly swing back in Apple’s favor. Stay tuned.

Motorola XT720 is a good example of this trend. This smartphone has its unique design, commendable features and its distinctions in the form of camera add-ons, is offered in metal body and at a reasonable price. Moto?

Motorola FlipOut. First Look at Toy Smartphone

Mobile-review have posted a preview of the new Motorola FlipOut. Here are the phone's features and their final impression.

To tell the truth, I don't know who this device is aimed at and don't understand what it can attract with other than its toy appeal. Nor do I know who can be attracted to the SE X10 mini and mini pro or the Nokia X5 announced yesterday. Those are all toys, impulse buy models. As a phone, the Moto FlipOut is moderately convenient; due to its square shape, its plumpness and small size, the device is not that suitable to hold against one's ear, which makes talking for a long time not comfortable. In contrast to that, typing messages turns out to be quite neat.

Overall, the FlipOut makes a toy phone for those who need exactly that; as a present to one's girlfriend or kids it is an interesting model, but as a man's tool – I don't think so.

No Tablet with Ubuntu planned

Mark Shuttleworth has denied that there will be a tablet version of Ubuntu. In an interview with Golem.de on the edge of the LinuxTag, he reiterated Canonical's plans for the use of the Linux distribution on desktops and netbooks.
Ubuntu is the future for desktop PCs, netbooks and use are developed on servers, said Mark Shuttleworth Golem.de. Same time, Ubuntu will be optimized for use on netbooks. There were discussions with OEM partners how to distribute a new version, called Ubuntu Light, in parallel with Windows on netbooks.

Canonical Ubuntu will bring neither on smartphones or on tablets, so Shuttleworth. His colleague Chris Kenyon had been misunderstood in an interview. There were developers who uses Ubuntu on different devices, such as in video streaming devices, and, indeed, Tablets. Ubuntu plans to develop a special version for Tablets, there was not.

Ubuntu tablet threat to iPad? Nah

Apple mops sweat from brow, puts down smelling salts.

The founder of Linux Ubuntu has laid to rest stories of a tablet version, no doubt causing widespread relief in Cupertino.

Rumours of an Ubuntu tablet circulated over the weekend, based on an interview with Canonical's VP of Alliances and OEM Services. But those rumours have now been scotched by the man in charge, Mark Shuttleworth, who told Golem.de that Ubuntu remains about desktops, netbooks and servers.

Canonical is the company that funds and manages Ubuntu. Canonical's VP reportedly said that a touch screen version of the distribution was in the offing, and mentioned all sorts of places where the distribution might turn up including tablets. At the time we commented that this would seem in contradiction to previous statements, and sure enough Shuttleworth - the man behind Canonical and sometime amateur astronaut - has clarified the matter.

In the interview with Golem.de Shuttleworth makes it very clear that while Ubuntu will be working on a lightweight version for netbooks there is no tablet-specific version planned. The original interview, it seems, was referring to the habit of Ubuntu developers to run the platform on all sorts of hardware, as Linux hackers are wont, including tablets.

Competing with Android and Meego, not to mention iOS, would seem optimistic to the point of self-delusion. Any company, open source or otherwise, who decides to take on Nokia, Microsoft, Apple and Google for ownership of a market that might not even exist is surely fanciful at the very least.

Canonical developing Ubuntu OS for tablets

Canonical is preparing a version of the Ubuntu OS for tablet computers as the company looks to extend its presence in the mobile space, a company executive said on Wednesday.

Tablets with the Ubuntu OS could become available late in next year's first quarter, said Chris Kenyon, Canonical's vice president of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) services. The OS will be a lightweight version of Linux with a simplified, touch-friendly user interface.
Norton Healthcare : Download now

Tablets are handheld devices with multitouch screens and on-screen keyboards. This would be Canonical's first foray into the tablet market, where it will compete with Google's Android, Intel's Meego and Apple's iPhone-based OS, which is used in the iPad.

Canonical currently offers Ubuntu 10.04 for servers, PCs and netbooks. However, the company has "broader and bigger ambitions than just netbooks," Kenyon said.

With touch input and varying screen sizes, tablets are fundamentally different from PCs, Kenyon said. The focus will be on developing an OS with a simplified user interface that provides quick access to the most-used applications. Development efforts will also focus on adding on-screen keyboard features and compatibility for multitouch drivers.

"The devices world is a really exciting space right now and we're really bullish on it," Kenyon said. "Hats off to the iPad team for doing what they did."

On the hardware side, the company is also talking to tablet makers and component manufacturers for the OS to run faster while consuming less power, Kenyon said. The company has signed deals with chip makers Freescale, Texas Instruments and Marvell, which make chips based on the Arm processor for devices like tablets and netbooks. The company is also collaborating with Intel to improve power-states, and display companies like Pixel Qi, which develops battery-saving screens for laptops and tablets.

Canonical already provides cloud storage through the Ubuntu One service, and users can purchase music through the Ubuntu One Music Store. Canonical may look to make deals to bring more content to users, but Kenyon did not provide further details.

The tablet OS will be based on Ubuntu's upcoming version 10.10, which is code-named Maverick Meerkat. The company also will merge the tablet and netbook OS under a lightweight Linux version called Ubuntu Light. Canonical already offers a version of Ubuntu Light, but it is being pitched as a quick-boot companion to Windows, or as a lightweight OS for netbooks and PCs.

Canonical developed an edition of Ubuntu in 2008 for mobile Internet devices, but the category of devices failed to take off. The company is taking a renewed look at the mobile space with a new generation of mobile products and form factors emerging. However, there are no plans to release a version of Ubuntu for smartphones.

"It's a crowded space with a lot of powerful players," Kenyon said.

Microsoft Office 2010 Now Available for Consumers Worldwide

Millions of beta users help Microsoft deliver the best experience for getting things done across the PC, phone and browser.

NEW YORK -- Today, Microsoft Corp. announced the worldwide availability of Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Visio 2010 and Microsoft Project 2010. Consumers can now purchase Office 2010 at more than 35,000 retail stores across the globe, such as Best Buy, Fnac, Harvey Norman and PC World; through online retailers, including Amazon.com; and direct from Microsoft at Office.com.

Office 2010 can also be purchased with the most popular desktops and laptops from leading PC makers including Acer Inc., Asus, Dell Inc., HP, Lenovo, Samsung and Sony Corp. In the next year, more than 100 million PCs will ship with Office 2010 preloaded, which can easily be activated with the purchase of any one of the three versions of Office 2010, including Office Home and Student 2010, Office Home and Business 2010, or Office Professional 2010.

"Working with major retail partners and PC makers, we've made dramatic changes in the way we deliver Office 2010 to give consumers more buying choice, making it easier than ever to unlock the power of Office on new and existing PCs," said Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division. "For the first time, people can purchase a Product Key Card at retail to activate Office 2010 preloaded on new PCs. For those who want to download Office 2010 direct from Office.com for an existing PC, the new Click-to-Run technology will have them up and running in a matter of minutes."

Office 2010 Represents a Great Growth Opportunity for Microsoft and Its Partners

"Recent comScore Tech Metrix™ data confirms that more than 1 billion PCs worldwide have Office software installed, making it the most widely used productivity suite in the world," said Mike Hurt, senior vice president of comScore. "This milestone helps illustrate the importance that software products like Microsoft Office have played in shaping the digital world to date."

Considering there are approximately 1.8 billion Internet users worldwide, Microsoft and its channel partners see an incredible opportunity to deliver Office 2010 to existing and new Office customers around the world.

From a survey of Office 2010 beta users, Microsoft found that 75 percent say they plan to buy Office 2010 within six months. The Office 2010 beta program had more than 9 million downloads — more than six times the size of the 2007 Microsoft Office beta program — indicating strong consumer interest in Office 2010.

"Following the great response to the Office 2010 beta and the success of Windows 7, we predict this will be the biggest consumer release of Office, ever," Elop said.

Productivity Solutions Across the PC, Phone and Browser

Throughout its development cycle, customer feedback has been critical to the improvements found in Office 2010. Based on this valuable input, Microsoft has made considerable enhancements to help users do the following:

* Create great-looking documents and presentations. Express creativity in PowerPoint 2010 presentations with new video and photo editing features. Add extensive text effects and table formatting options in Word 2010. Reveal important trends in data with Sparklines in Excel 2010. OneNote 2010 makes everything you need simple to find, organize and share.

* Connect and work together more simply. Advanced e-mail management and calendaring capabilities in Outlook 2010 and the new Outlook Social Connector help people stay productive and in touch with personal and business networks. Work with others more efficiently using new co-authoring in Word 2010, PowerPoint 2010 and OneNote 2010. Deliver presentations over the Web with new PowerPoint Broadcast Slideshow.

* Get things done from virtually anywhere. With Office 2010 and the Office Web Apps — the online companions to Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote — people have the freedom to save documents directly from Office 2010 to Windows Live SkyDrive, then view, edit and share those documents in the cloud. The Office Web Apps preserve the look and feel of Office documents, so valuable content and formatting are not compromised while moving between the PC, phone and browser*

Office Mobile 2010 also is available from Windows® Phone Marketplace for all

Windows Mobile 6.5 phones. People using Office Mobile 2010 can perform

lightweight editing of Office documents and take notes on the go, or work on Office

documents stored on their phone or attached to an e-mail.

Today, Office 2010 is available in 10 languages and will expand to 94 languages.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

* An appropriate device, Internet connection and supported browser are required. Some mobile functionality requires Office Mobile 2010, which is not included in Office 2010 applications, suites or Web Apps. There are some differences between the features of the Office Web Apps, Office Mobile 2010 and the Office 2010 applications.

ABBYY(R) Offers Recognition Server iFilter to Extend Capabilities of Microsoft(R) Search Systems Beyond Text Formats

New Solution Enhances Indexing Capabilities of Microsoft Office SharePoint® Server and Windows® Search to Make Image Files Easily Discoverable throughout Corporate Networks.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- ABBYY®, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic software, announced that it is expanding its offering for enterprise search systems with the new ABBYY Recognition Server iFilter solution. Integrated with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) Search or Windows Search, it unlocks image files such as TIFF, JPEG, DjVu, and PDF for full-text content indexing and therefore enables faster and more complete search of all documents in a corporate network. As a result, corporate users have a reliable tool to easily sort through volumes of image files accumulated in their organization.

"Enterprise search systems give corporate users quick access to information contained in a variety of documents necessary to perform everyday tasks. A document that cannot be quickly retrieved is usually considered to be lost even if, nominally, it still exists somewhere in the archives. But some documents are stored in formats that are not convenient for search and retrieval, such as image formats," commented Andrey Isaev, director of Technology Products for ABBYY. "Our product, designed to enhance Microsoft systems with the image search support, provides an easy solution to simplify access to corporate information and knowledge, and increase work efficiency in an organization."

Many important documents, such as scanned faxes, agreements, correspondence, etc., are stored as images and, therefore, cannot be indexed by the Microsoft search engine. The ABBYY solution provides the iFilter plug-in to integrate with the Microsoft search system and gives access to a background optical character recognition (OCR) service which is performed by the award-winning ABBYY Recognition Server software.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server indexes text documents which are located in the corporate network itself, and utilizes ABBYY Recognition Server iFilter when image files need to be processed. iFilter transmits the image-based documents to Recognition Server for OCR processing and then submits the recognized text back to the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server for indexing. This processing makes the documents available for full-text search. To avoid the possibility of overloading the search system, ABBYY Recognition Server is installed on a separate computer and can be scaled up with additional capacity at any time.

ABBYY Recognition Server iFilter also works with Microsoft Windows Search, a system for searching files on desktop PCs and connected recourses. One copy of ABBYY Recognition Server can perform OCR for all Windows Search clients installed on the corporate network, and therefore is enough capacity for all employees of the organization to be able to search through images on their computers. The background image processing is performed on the server and does not consume resources of the users' PCs.

For more information about the product's functionality and availability, please visit http://www.abbyy.com/recognition_server/scenarios/OCR_iFilter_for_Microsoft

Industry Leaders Launch UTI, Home to the Java Verified Program, as an Independent Organization

UTI appoints Executive Director, announces enhancements to the Java Verified program, and moves forward as a self-funded organization to advance proven high-quality mobile applications.

LONDON -- Today, the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI), home to the Java Verified program, announced that UTI has become an independent organization. Oracle and the UTI management board, which consists of representatives from AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone, have been collaborating for the past year to ensure the new self-governing and self-funded organization meets the evolving quality assurance requirements of mobile application developers worldwide.

Signaling this new chapter, UTI has appointed an Executive Director who will be responsible for all UTI program management, with financial and legal support provided by the standards organization, IEEE-ISTO.

UTI is committed to continuing to provide Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME) developers and the mobile industry with testing and resources for delivering more high-quality mobile applications to market faster. Java ME is the world's most broadly deployed mobile runtime, utilized by nine of the top 10 handset manufacturers and powers nearly three billion phones in over 150 countries worldwide.

"The Java Verified program has always been the global standard for ensuring mobile application quality based on stringent application testing and signing procedures," said Martin Wrigley, chair of UTI and director of developer services, Orange. "Now, as Java Verified moves 'full speed ahead' within an independent organization, we salute Oracle and the UTI management board for providing the industry with new opportunities for advancing more high quality mobile applications."

As an independent organization, UTI has increased flexibility for more easily adding new capabilities and functionality to the Java Verified program. This new structure also lays the foundation for UTI to quickly develop, implement and manage new quality assurance programs for mobile application developers, carriers and handset manufactures working across the mobile ecosystem.

"Java technology powers 85 percent of all mobile phones, including almost a billion new devices shipped in the last year. Empowering the UTI, as an independent organization, to run the Java Verified program is a very important step in the continued growth and success of the Java open mobile ecosystem," said Hasan Rizvi, senior vice president, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Java. "Oracle is committed to making Java an even more attractive investment for developers, who have already built more than 100,000 mobile Java applications, for the over 400 operators who have deployed Java ME and for the growing number of handset manufacturers who rely on Java technology. We look forward to collaborating with the members of UTI to ensure that the Java Verified Program provides developers with even more of the resources they need to rapidly deliver new, high-quality business and consumer applications into the global marketplace."

Announcing UTI's first Executive Director

As part of today's news, UTI is announcing the appointment of Ruth Cattell as the organization's first Executive Director. Cattell is working with the UTI management board to assist in driving the strategic direction of the organization on a global basis. Based in the UK and with ten years of telecom marketing and program management experience, Cattell has worked with mobile application developers worldwide, managing a variety of technical and marketing support programs. Cattell is responsible for UTI program management as the organization moves to enhance the Java Verified program and readies a variety of new quality assurance programs for mobile application developers.

"The launch of UTI as an independent organization represents a significant step forward in the evolution of Java Verified," said Cattell. "As UTI continues to grow, developers around the world will regularly have access to new industry-leading resources for advancing mobile applications that have met a wide range of quality assurance requirements."

New Java Verified Website and developer tools launched today

With today's news, UTI is announcing the launch of an updated Java Verified website and new features for Java ME developers. These enhancements are designed to make it easier for Java ME developers to test mobile applications in the Java Verified program. The new site allows developers to find relevant information more quickly and includes educational and "how to" videos featuring Java Verified experts discussing a wide range of topics.

Enhancements released today include an updated version of the Testing and Signing Portal featuring an improved user interface. Also available today is an automated version of the Java Verified device matrix, which includes all of the handsets and devices Java Verified supports. The automated device matrix makes it faster for manufactures to add new devices and handsets to the matrix, and easier for developers to locate the devices they should test their applications against. The device calculator allows developers to price testing before they begin the application testing process.

About UTI

UTI is an industry-approved, not-for-profit mobile application testing body, run for the industry by the industry. The organization develops testing and de-fragmentation initiatives for the mobile industry and is working to provide a common testing standard for mobile platforms: initially, but not exclusively, for Java ME. UTI leadership includes representation from AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone. More information about UTI is available at www.javaverified.com.

About Java Verified

As a program of UTI, the primary goal of Java Verified is to provide developers with testing and resources for delivering more high-quality Java ME applications to more devices faster. Java Verified membership is open to all organizations interested in advancing high-quality mobile applications in a collaborative environment. For more information about the Java Verified program please visit our website at www.javaverified.com.

SCM World Release Chief Supply Chain Officer Report 2010: Elevation of Supply Chain to the C-Suite Sighted as Critical Step to Achieve Best-in-Class

Global Operations.

LONDON -- SCM World (a RaptureWorld Company) released the 2010 Chief Supply Chain Officer Report - a survey of 400 senior global supply chain and procurement executives. The report has been designed and developed to draw out critical insights that drive C-level supply chain executives in 2010 and beyond. With such a rapidly shifting macro economic climate, the report uncovers how companies are re-defining the role of the supply chain officer, and in turn how those executives are positioning their organizations to remain competitive in an increasingly globalized and complex operating environment.

Download the full report here (http://www.scmworld.org/?page=cscoreport)

Key Findings:

Technology Investment to increase in 2010: 49% of respondents say that they will increase investment in supply chain related technology this year.

Responding to customer and demand volatility crucial: 54% of respondents site this as the number one issue driving the focus on Supply Chain Management within their organizations

Cost-center to competitive advantage: 31% of overall supply respondents report that their companies still view supply chain management as a cost center, today 33% of C-Level respondents view supply chain management (SCM) as a market strategy differentiator.

Best-in-Class Organization Capabilities: In this study, Best-in-Class firms are 50% more likely than all others to have an executive position with end-to-end SCM responsibility. Even though 81% of Best-in-Class companies report having a centralized supply chain organization, only 34% of these companies have a Chief Supply Chain Officer.

'The results of the SCM World Chief Supply Chain Officer (CSCO) Report are simply fascinating,' said Oliver Sloane, Co-CEO of RaptureWorld. 'It is clearly a fact that the most forward thinking organizations have, or are in the process of, positioning a supply chain role at the very highest level within their company. The centrality of the supply chain to competitive advantage is key, and whilst the tough market conditions of the last 18 months may have changed the emphasis and focus within individual supply chain organizations, they have only served to further cement the significance of the function as a whole to the overall performance of global businesses.' Sloane continued, noting that 'the SCM World CSCO Report is an absolute must-read for global supply chain, procurement and logistics executives, to give a real insight into what your peers are doing to tackle the same challenges you face today.'

Nari Viswanathan, Vice President/Principal Analyst at Aberdeen Group, and the report's primary author said, 'Aberdeen is happy to adopt its proprietary PACE research methodology to develop this important report on behalf of SCM World. Given both the level and volume of executives that we have reached through this survey, the results should stand as a very clear indicator as to the changing role of the supply chain leader and the key priorities and action points to consider.'

Verizon Wireless Names Randall Miller Executive Director Of Network In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Region

TREVOSE, PA — Verizon Wireless has named Randall Miller executive director of network for the Philadelphia Tri-State Region, a territory which includes central, northeastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

In this position, Miller will be responsible for all aspects of network operations, engineering and system performance to meet the growing demand for the company’s wireless voice and data services in the region which allows more customers to use their wireless phones – including the latest, advanced smartphones – concurrently to make calls, surf the Internet, update social networking sites, send and receive text and picture messages, and download apps, music, and games. Previously, he served as executive director data services operations where he was responsible for the daily operation of the national Verizon Wireless core data network, data applications and services.

Miller began his 16-year wireless telecommunications career as a system performance engineer with Nynex Mobile Communications in New England. At the merger of Bell Atlantic with Nynex Mobile, Miller moved into management leading the system performance team in New England. Later, he assisted with the network integration of Frontier Cellular with Verizon Wireless as the director of performance and engineering in Rochester, NY.

Since that time, Miller has held different director level positions in Philadelphia as well as Verizon Wireless’ National Network Operations.

“Randy’s extensive knowledge and experience in the wireless industry brings additional depth to our region as we continue to invest in our 3G network to meet the needs of our growing customer base,” said Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State region.

Miller will be responsible for the continued expansion and enhancement of the company’s wireless network across the region, including oversight of the company’s real life test men and women who proactively test the company’s network and those of its competitors to ensure the Verizon Wireless network remains the nations most reliable. He will also oversee the region’s launch of Long Term Evolution (LTE) fourth generation network launching later this year.

These network enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless' aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company's voice and data services. Verizon Wireless invested more than $163 million to enhance services and in the Philadelphia Tri-State Region during 2009. The network investment is part of more than $1.3 billion invested in the region and more than $59 billion invested across the nation since the company was formed in 2000.

A Montgomery County Pa. resident, Miller holds a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and a master’s of business administration from Rivier College.
