11 Gb / s transmitter millimeter from Sony

Sony has announced the development of a system of data transmission in the millimeter range, which will provide high speed. Among the expected benefits of the new system - decrease in size and cheaper actual transmitters. Also, states and greater reliability. Used in the transmitter frequency - from 30 GHz to 300 GHz (wavelength - 1.10 mm). High frequency provides high-speed data transfer, and the use of millimeter waves allow for a maximum compact antenna.

High technology is already used by Sony. In the future, such as data transmission systems can be embedded in appliances, such as, for example, televisions. Currently, a prototype system was implemented on a chip using the rules of 40 nm CMOS (CMOS) process (the total area of the transmitter and the receiver was 0.13 mm2), with data transfer rate is 11 Gbit / s at a distance of 14 mm, and antenna size did not exceed 1 mm. The use of such transmitters instead of wired connections will increase the reliability of the system during transportation, as well as reduce weight and reduce the volume of the device, which will increase their mobility.

Acer’s Google Android Phone Sales Beat Expectations

-- Acer Inc., the world’s No. 2 computer vendor, said stronger-than-expected sales of its Google Inc. Android phone, named Liquid, have led to shortages of the device.

“Liquid is doing much better than our expectation,” Gianfranco Lanci, president of the Taipei-based company, said in an interview yesterday. “This is why we’re a little bit short of supply.”

The Liquid touch-screen handset, unveiled in October, competes against models from HTC Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. and Motorola Inc. in the market for phones using the free Android platform. Acer expects its smartphone sales, including those using Microsoft Corp.’s Windows system, to total between 2 million and 3 million units this year, Lanci said.

Acer expects to ship at least 250,000 Liquid handsets by the end of this quarter, compared with initial expectations for 150,000 to 200,000, Lanci said. Smartphones will account for 10 percent of Acer’s revenue in about three years, one year later than initial company predictions because of last year’s global economic slump, the executive said.

“It’s a very competitive market and depends a lot on feedback from customers,” said Angela Hsiang, who rates the company “outperform” at KGI Securities Co. in Taipei. “If you launch a product and it’s successful, that’s very positive in helping marketing for the future.”

Acer shares lost 2.3 percent to NT$84.80 as of 11:40 a.m. in Taipei today, taking its decline this year to 11.8 percent compared with a 12.4 percent slide in the benchmark Taiex index.

Liquid is manufactured by Taipei-based Compal Communications Inc. while Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. will make a second Android handset for Acer this quarter, Jim Wong, president of Acer’s IT Products division, said Jan. 22.

Technical problems and slow consumer acceptance of Android led to Taoyuan, Taiwan-based HTC posting a 5 percent drop in revenue last year, its first annual sales decline. HTC, maker of Google’s Nexus One handset, shipped 11.7 million smartphones in 2009, it said in a Jan. 26 statement.

IMPORTANT SOFTWARE UPDATE AVAILABLE FOR ROGERS' HTC DREAM AND MAGIC DEVICES

Rogers Communications customers who have purchased the Rogers HTC Magic or HTC Dream are advised to update the software on their handsets to ensure that 911 calls complete. An issue has been identified in these products that will prevent 911 calls from completing in certain situations. Specifically, calling 911 may reboot the phones if:

a) GPS is enabled on the phone; and
b) a customer is connected to the Internet either through the network or a WiFi connection.

Rogers disabled network internet access on these devices as a short-term fix. Rogers is strongly advising customers who have not yet updated their software to turn off GPS and WiFi connections and to update the software as soon as possible.

Rogers has reached out directly to Dream and Magic customers through multiple SMS text messages and voicemail messages, urging them to install an update that repairs this known issue. Internet service has already been restored for thousands of customers who have completed the update.

For detailed instructions on how to complete this update, customers should click the link for "Rogers HTC Dream/Magic Required Software Upgrade Instructions" below on this page. Customers will need to backup any personal items before the update process. Users of Windows 7 or Macintosh will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions. Rogers has also removed all Dream and Magic inventory while updated software is installed on these handsets.

Rogers customers who are using HTC Dream and Magic devices that were not purchased from Rogers need to be aware that the same safety issue is present in some of these devices. HTC has reached out to some Rogers customers to advise that a mandatory software update is now available. As a precautionary interim measure, Rogers strongly recommends that customers turn off the GPS and WiFi capability to ensure 911 call completion. Customers with Dream or Magic devices not purchased from Rogers should contact HTC for further details at 1-866-449-8358. People who purchased HTC Dream or Magic devices from Rogers that are now being used on other networks should also disable GPS and WiFi and contact HTC for more information.

Rogers top priority is protecting the safety of its customers. Rogers sincerely apologizes for this inconvenience. Dream and Magic customers on data plans will automatically be credited for one month of data fees (excluding roaming). This credit will show up on invoices within 60 days.

However, Archos said this is "special developer edition firmware" and warned that the operating system "consists of proof-of-concept software intended for experienced software developers only.

"If you are not a programmer/developer and would just like to try it out, understand that it will have capabilities inferior to that of the standard Archos operating system."

Angstrom was ported to the Archos platform late in 2009, but this is first time Archos has itself made the OS available to users. Angstrom was specifically developed for handheld devices, set-top boxes and the like.

Archos has provided the firmware as a standard software update, but cautioned that installation will remove Android and all Archos media software.

Android can be restored by booting the 5 into USB Mass Storage mode and copying over a .AOS firmware file from a connected PC.

Google leaps language barrier with translator phone

GOOGLE is developing software for the first phone capable of translating foreign languages almost instantly — like the Babel Fish in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

By building on existing technologies in voice recognition and automatic translation, Google hopes to have a basic system ready within a couple of years. If it works, it could eventually transform communication among speakers of the world’s 6,000-plus languages.

The company has already created an automatic system for translating text on computers, which is being honed by scanning millions of multi-lingual websites and documents. So far it covers 52 languages, adding Haitian Creole last week.

Google also has a voice recognition system that enables phone users to conduct web searches by speaking commands into their phones rather than typing them in.

Now it is working on combining the two technologies to produce software capable of understanding a caller’s voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language. Like a professional human interpreter, the phone would analyse “packages” of speech, listening to the speaker until it understands the full meaning of words and phrases, before attempting translation.

“We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years’ time,” said Franz Och, Google’s head of translation services.

“Clearly, for it to work smoothly, you need a combination of high-accuracy machine translation and high-accuracy voice recognition, and that’s what we’re working on.

“If you look at the progress in machine translation and corresponding advances in voice recognition, there has been huge progress recently.”

Although automatic text translators are now reasonably effective, voice recognition has proved more challenging.

“Everyone has a different voice, accent and pitch,” said Och. “But recognition should be effective with mobile phones because by nature they are personal to you. The phone should get a feel for your voice from past voice search queries, for example.”

The translation software is likely to become more accurate the more it is used. And while some translation systems use crude rules based on the grammar of languages, Google is exploiting its vast database of websites and translated documents to improve the accuracy of its system.

“The more data we input, the better the quality,” said Och. There is no shortage of help. “There are a lot of language enthusiasts out there,” he said.

However, some experts believe the hurdles to live translation remain high. David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics at Bangor University, said: “The problem with speech recognition is the variability in accents. No system at the moment can handle that properly.

“Maybe Google will be able to get there faster than everyone else, but I think it’s unlikely we’ll have a speech device in the next few years that could handle high-speed Glaswegian slang.

“The future, though, looks very interesting. If you have a Babel Fish, the need to learn foreign languages is removed.”

In the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the small, yellow Babel Fish was capable of translating any language when placed in the ear. It sparked a bloody war because everyone became able to understand what other people were saying.

HTC Bravo - Orange internal documentation appears

The HTC Bravo has received a surge of interest since we first found out that it was about to appear on Orange. Many of you have been told the same by Orange customer service, and Nick Butcher has even stepped up with this PDF. The fact sheet was sent to him by Orange and appears to show the phone only having 320MB of memory.

A few other things are a little weird, like the Copyright notification reading 2008 and the actual image itself is pinched from a website (note the watermarks). However, we've seen little indiscretions on internal paperwork before and the email source info definitely stacks up, so we feel that this is legit infor.

Set to arrive in March, this is effectively the same specs as the Nexus One but with the added HTC Sense interface. The weeks just can't pass quickly enough!

HTC Espresso being renamed for use on the MyTouch 2?

The thing about rumors is that sometimes things change, and what was once good intel fades to black - disappears without ever seeing the light of day. That may or may not be the case with this, I guess only time will tell.

It is not new news that the HTC Espresso will be in T-Mobiles 2010 handset line-up. Noteworthy enough though, is that we have now had two sources tip us that internally T-Mobile is prepping to launch the Espresso as the myTouch 2, NOT to be confused with the myTouch 1.2 which will be launching any day now. The Espresso is generally considered to be a refresh of the Hero, the 'with QWERTY' version. Spec'd as a device with that same old Qualcomm 528 Mega-Hertz processor, I would have to question the reasoning behind putting marketing dollars, let alone any other dollars into a device with an aging processor in a world of Tegra and Snapdragon. Yes...I said Tegra, but thats another story, for another day.

Nokia C5, C6 To Be Announced Soon

Nokia, as most of you might be aware, is not participating at the Mobile World Congress scheduled for next week at Barcelona. However, the company seems to be all set to launch its new range of phones from the C-Series.

Images of the first C-Series handset, the C5, was already leaked last week. The line-up is expected to include two more handsets as of now that will be known as the C3 and the C6. Just to refresh your memory, this has nothing to do with the Nokia C6 that the Finnish handset-maker had in its line-up back in 1997. The interesting thing about the C6 is that it will be a touchscreen handset - a cheap one at that. In fact, it seems, the entire C-Series is aimed at the budget market and will feature phones that will have as many features as other higher-end models - but at a cheaper price tag.

Nokia's existing lineup has the 5230 that holds the title of being the cheapest touchscreen phone from Nokia as of now. Will C6 replace 5230's reign? We will hopefully find that out at the Nokia event post the MWC this year!
