NVIDIA showed the prototype of plane-table on you [chipsete] Tegra 2

On one of its recent measures the company NVIDIA showed an example of the use of its apparatus platform Of tegra 2. this the plane-table, which designed for NVIDIA the company Of foxconn. It will be hardly released into sale, all the more, under its own stamp Of foxconn. But possibly, it will take as the basis other companies with the development of our own products on the base NVIDIA Of tegra 2. Pravda, it is not clear, when such solutions are released, most probably, this will happen nearer toward the end year.

Plane-table from Foxconn is equipped with 8,9- one inch sensory screen with the support of control of multi-touch and works on the basis of the program platform Of android. The volume of the working storage of device is 1 Gb; also he has frontal camera even two joints USB. I.e., model from Foxconn possesses a number of the possibilities, not occurred, for example, in the plane-table of iPad, but to the competition with it the similar solutions will be calculated. Apparently, nearer toward the end year into sale will leave several plane-tables on the basis NVIDIA Of tegra 2 from the different producers.

HP: [netbukov] from webOS it will not be, but will be HP Of slate in October

Official communication, that the company Of hewlett-Packard plans to inject the operating system of webOS to the plane-tables and even printers was. But here that, who expects it on [netbukakh], it is necessary either very it takes a long time to wait or and to completely forego the similar to idea. At least, To [monti] [Vong] (Monty Of wong), which is been the Vice President of the regional department of company NR in Taiwan, reported that in the nearest plans of any [netbukov] from webOS the company does not have any. Reason to that is simple: contemporary [netbuki] in larger degree of [rodstvenny] to valuable computers than to [smartfonam] and KPK and to adapt [smartfonnuyu] OS under them does not have a sense. To so that develop this direction NR will not be. Then it will produce [planshetnik] NR Of slate.

From Mr. [Vong]'s words, it is possible to understand that the discussion deals not about the plane-table from webOS, but with that plane-table itself with Windows 7. in this case the resource Of digiTimes, which published its words, designated writing Slate (plane-table) precisely from the capital letter, which can mean that HP Of slate - official name of model. On the market it must appear the in October present year and immediately with the large number of programs and applications for it. Which also tells in favor in OS Windows 7, since applications for webOS not so there are many.

If plane-table from Hewlett-Packard will work under control Windows 7, then this will refute the previously passed rumor about that which from the use of an operating system Of microsoft was decided to refuse, by in favor acquired together with Palm operating system of webOS. In any event, it will become finally clearly at the end July, when HP completes the absorption Of palm - after Mr. [Vong]'s this according to, will be reported the details of the development OS of webOS.

Nexus Of one will obtain Android Of froyo in the next weeks

After the official announcement of the new version of operating system for the cell phones Of google Of android of 2.2 Froyo came up the question, what precisely [smartfony] and when this version OS is obtained. Analyst Rodman & Renshaw predicts reduction OS for the cell phones

At the present moment the user can select among the sufficiently large number of platforms of [smartfonov]. Among them basic are Symbian, Android, iPhone OS, Windows Of mobile, BlackBerry OS, Maemo, webOS and another number those of less extended. The communications appeared relative to some of them, that the producers plan to turn from use to one or other volume or another. Relative to others, on the contrary, it communicated about the increase and the propagation. While some companies reduced the number of utilized platforms, others enlarged [portfolio] or started its own. However, the analyst of the agency Of rodman & Of renshaw Of [ashok] coumarone resin (Ashok Of kumar), counts that soon situation radically it will change.

This expert assumes that the producers will refuse from the present abundance, and fight on the market will be conducted between only by two: iPhone OS from Apple and Android from Google. Accordingly the selection of user will be limited by these two platforms. This for the following reasons will occur. The company Of apple by the starting of iPhone of the fourth generation and iPhone OS 4.0 will draw to itself the significant attention, which will bring to the increasing propagation of its production. If the new version Of symbian from Nokia is not able to draw users, then the reduction of interest in it will follow, and company will be is forced to make basic OS either Of android or Windows of Mr. [Kumar]'s Phone 7. I, in the opinion, at the present moment of circumstance are added not in favor Symbian.

Concerning by the recently acquired company NR of the operating system of webOS, this analyst is inclined to evaluate its prospects is too optimistically. Without a radical increase in the expenditures for mobile subdivision, the purchase Of palm will bring nothing good. Still less than prospects Mr. [Kumar] sees in BlackBerry OS. RIM “hardly will be able to strive for more, than to hold its portion”. And only relative to the prospects for that not yet left Windows Of phone 7 followed no commentaries, besides the fact that it " remains dark horse”.

How to Install Android on Your iPhone

Here's how to install Google's Android OS on your iPhone. Be forewarned, though: This hack isn't for the faint of heart.

Maybe you want to liberate your iPhone from Apple's clutches. Maybe you just want to tinker with something new. Either way, you've seen Android running on the iPhone, and you want to try it for yourself.
Still a Work in Progress

Android in a bagAlthough this port does everything that you expect your smartphone to be able to do, it isn't usable for day-to-day activities just yet--I haven't implemented any power-management functions, so a fully charged iPhone running Android will last only an hour or so.

A few bugs and performance issues remain, too, so while the phone will be usable, it won't be fast. If you do something unexpected (such as forcing the iPhone off), there is a small chance that you may end up restoring your device. However, it is impossible for any bugs to brick or disable your iPhone permanently.

Finally, media syncing is not working, so loading your media onto your phone is kind of a pain. I'm working as hard as I can, though, and I expect to fix these issues soon.
Required Reading

Start by brushing up on the fundamentals of iPhone maintenance: how to get your iPhone into Recovery Mode, how to put it into DFU Mode, and how to perform a firmware restore from those modes.

The iPhone is a well-engineered device, and it is virtually impossible to brick if you know these techniques. If all else fails, remember that you can always restore using DFU Mode.

You'll also need to be reasonably comfortable working in a command-line interface, and unless you're confident in trying to compile your own binaries, you'll need a PC running Linux (or a Linux virtual machine).
What You Need

1. A first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G with firmware versions between 2.0 and 3.1.2, jailbroken with Redsn0w, Blacksn0w, or PwnageTool. If you already updated your handset to 3.1.3 or to a 4.0 beta, you must use PwnageTool to create a jailbroken 3.1.2 .ipsw file to restore down to.

The Spirit jailbreak won't workNote that I am explicitly excluding the iPhone 3GS, all iPod Touch models, and the iPad. This hack will not work with those devices (yet). I am also explicitly excluding iPhone OS 3.1.3 and all of the 4.0 betas. It will not work with the Spirit jailbreak, either.

If you haven't yet jailbroken your iPhone, don't worry--it's a simple process that consists mainly of pressing buttons on the device when prompted and clicking the next button in a wizard. I humbly recommend Redsn0w, since I wrote much of the code for that program.

2. A 32-bit Linux system or virtual machine (I recommend Ubuntu). See "How to Easily Install Ubuntu Linux on Any PC" for instructions if you don't already have Ubuntu.

Although much of the process can be conducted on any machine, one of the tools involved (called 'oibc') has not yet been ported to Windows. In addition, the binaries I provide are compiled on a 32-bit Ubuntu machine.

All of the utilities compile for Linux and Mac, however, so if you're feeling adventurous, compile the sources at github.com/planetbeing/iphonelinux and github.com/planetbeing/xpwn instead of using the binaries.

3. The prebuilt images and binaries; the exact files you use depend on whether you have a first-generation iPhone or an iPhone 3G.

4. The iPhone OS 3.1.2 .ipsw file for your device, namely either iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw. Chances are, you already have this file somewhere on your computer, but if you need it, you can download it.

5. The firmware for the Marvell WLAN chip inside the iPhone. Go to the URL, and on the right side of the page you should see a drop-down menu labeled 'Choose your platform'. Select Linux 2.6 - Fedora from the drop-down menu and click the Search button underneath. Download the file labeled SD-8686-LINUX26-SYSKT-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45-GPL. You'll get a file called SD-8686-LINUX26-SYSKT-9.70.3.p24-26409.P45-GPL.zip.

Exclusive: Yahoo Poised to Unveil “Project Nike” Partnership Deal With Nokia at Monday Event

Yahoo sent out an invite for a press conference in New York on Monday with a mysterioso tone:

It read, vaguely:

“Please join Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz for an exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected.”

That’s all it took to get BoomTown on the horn to find out what that meant.

And, according to sources, that will be a deal with Finland-based mobile phone giant Nokia (NOK) to build Yahoo (YHOO) email, search and other applications and services into a range of its devices.

While the pair had once discussed Nokia making a Yahoo-centric phone, sources said that is unlikely to be part of this deal.

Such a partnership–code-named “Project Nike” after the Greek goddess of victory and not the sneaker–has been batted around for many years between the companies without result, even as Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) have grabbed the spotlight and business in the exploding smartphone market.

Yahoo has had a range of various mobile initiatives and has had many, mostly failed, partnerships with carriers and telecom makers.

But without its own phone or mobile operating system, such as Google’s Android, the Internet giant is essentially nowhere in what has become the most important digital sector today.

Nokia, which makes more mobile devices–mostly “feature” phones, not smartphones–than any other company, has also struggled to keep up the lightning-fast pace of innovation and has been looking for ways to compete as the landscape shifts dramatically.

That’s why the long-festering deal was placed again on the fast track, especially by Bartz, who has put a lot of emphasis of late on showing Yahoo to be more relevant and cutting-edge.

Thus, the Nokia deal is likely to be a splashy centerpiece of next week’s investor day on Wednesday in Silicon Valley, which will feature Bartz and her senior management, including Americas EVP Hilary Schneider.

Schneider has played a lead role in the Nokia deal, which sources said closed two to three weeks ago.

Bartz will also be appearing at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York next week, a speaker addition that will be announced soon, where she is likely to discuss the deal.

Yahoo has been on a bit of a deal tear of late, purchasing social publishing start-up Associated Content for $90 million earlier this week.

And while the Nokia deal will likely garner a lot of attention when announced, execution will–as usual–be key in determining if this works, especially since both companies are now in a much weaker position.

“Recently, Nokia has offered devices that people don’t want and Yahoo has launched mobile services that they don’t want,” said one person familiar with the talks. “Perhaps in working together, they will find a way to finally create some value.”

Yahoo declined to comment and Nokia has not responded to an email I sent tonight.

Sprint Nextel Announces New $2.1 Billion Credit Agreement

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S) announced that it has entered into a new $2.1 billion unsecured revolving credit facility. The new credit facility expires in October 2013 and replaces the company's $4.5 billion revolving credit facility that was due to expire in December 2010.

In the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010, Sprint generated $666 million and $506 million of Free Cash Flow, respectively. The company ended first quarter 2010 with cash, cash equivalent and short-term investments of $4.4 billion that reduce the need for a larger credit facility and its related costs.

The new credit facility will provide supplemental liquidity for general corporate purposes and will be used to support the $1.6 billion letter of credit required by the Federal Communications Commission's Report and Order to reconfigure the 800 MHz band. The credit facility does not have an outstanding balance, but letters of credit reduce the facility's available borrowing capacity.

The new credit agreement includes a ratio of total indebtedness to trailing four quarter EBITDA adjusted for certain other non-recurring charges to a maximum of 4.50 to 1 through March 2012, subsequently reduced to 4.25 to 1 through December 2012, and thereafter reduced to 4.0 to 1 for the remaining term.

The company simultaneously amended its $750 million credit agreement with Export Development Canada, originally entered into in March 2007, to incorporate the same changes in covenants.

Alltel’s 3G data network has been upgraded to the latest revision of wireless broadband technology to enable faster delivery of data applications, including e-mail and browsing the Internet.

Verizon Wireless invests more in its network than any other wireless service provider in the United States. The company has spent more than $59 billion since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. During the first quarter of this year, the company invested nearly $62 million in its Ohio network.

GoogleTV Invigorates the IPTV Market and Genos' CEO, Rob Shambro, Dissects the AlternativeTV Space

-- Five Kinds of IPTV: TV Embedded, Media Extender, Stand Alone, Computer Monitor Out to the TV and Hybrid

-- Internet TV Providers: GoogleTV, Roku, AppleTV, Vudu, Tivo, XBOX360, Boxee, Linksys DMA, Niveus EDGE, HP MediaSmart, Samsung MediaLive, D-Link DSM and GenosTV

-- 'Apple Won Music, by putting it where it is supposed to be, on the hip. GenosTV will win IP/ traditional video by putting it where it is supposed to be, ON THE TV,' stated Rob Shambro at Digital Hollywood, May 5, 2010

LAS VEGAS, HONG KONG and AMSTERDAM --Today, after fielding tons of calls regarding GoogleTV's announcement yesterday, Rob Shambro, GenosTV's CEO decided to dissect the "AlternativeTV" market. Genos, the world's first broadband cable TV network, decided to dissect the players and their offerings due to several misconceptions in this space.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20100521/AQ08961LOGO)

First, define IPTV, Internet Protocol Television. It comes in three main groups: Live TV, time shifted programming and video on demand. Essentially it is the playing of Internet Encoded Media on a traditional television. Most video starts off the same way. It is the way that it is encoded or encapsulated that makes it different. The rules, regulations and the intentions of the content rights holder is the most important differentiator. Most IP media is in the form of video on demand and internet generated content, like you would see on YouTube. Getting this media to play on the TV is what most of the players are focusing on. IP media is awesome since it typically can be played when and how you want it. More video is available in IP form.

Getting the video from the Internet to play on the TV comes in many flavors. First, one can take a computer, set it close to the TV and connect its video and audio outputs to that of the TV. Often this is not an easy process since every TV and computer has different inputs and outputs. Secondly, we have the extender concept which addresses this issue. Extender for Windows Media Center is available on the Media Center Edition, Vista and Windows 7. It allows a computer to connect to a network and an authorized device like the XBOX360, Linksys DMA, Samsung Media Live and the HP MediaSmart. The process still requires the end user to make the selection at the computer level.

Now for the Hybrid, stand alone and embedded solutions providers. The GoogleTV platform will be made available through various TV service providers and hardware manufacturers -- as a separate box or integrated into TVs and other provider boxes. The service seems to have two offerings -- indexing your stored media and provide search capability of your subscribed channels from your cable provider, YouTube and other web content. It's a browser for your TV. A quick Google search on GoogleTV today, shows very mixed emotions on the service, leaning towards the "not so impressed.".

AppleTV is a stand-alone Internet-to-TV service -- heavily weighted by iTunes and offering lot of IP movies on demand and a decent selection of television episodes, that are Internet Encoded, for sale. So you can buy last week's episode of House for $2.99. However, the TED speeches are awesome.

The Roku box is driven by Netflix. Netflix and Roku work like an extender. You have to plug your Roku box number into the Roku website for it to be authorized, then you choose the movies from the Netflix site that are internet enabled. Next the Roku box is notified and you can watch your chosen movies from Netflix on your TV. They do have Pandora, which plays on the TV, which is cool since it makes it easy to connect your music to your entertainment center. Don't lose the remote!!

If the box has a browser it is most likely NOT an extender. If you have to use your computer to search or choose in any way, and that decision is send to another box like the Linksys or HP, then it is an extender.

Now GenosTV has two services that are very different from the offerings of the above players. GenosTV is a Cable TV Provider, WORLDWIDE. You would cancel your cable or satellite service and order GenosTV. The difference is that you will only have to pay for the channels that you want. Genos is unbundling Cable TV. "You buy the Genos box for under $100 after the company's launch at CES Jan., 2011. You connect the box to your TV and broadband Internet. You sign up. You pick your language. You pick your channels, which run between 2-3 dollars per month. Then you THANK THE BOX", says CEO, Rob Shambro, "Imagine the cost savings!" The Genos Service comes with TVME, the next killer app, which allows anyone in the world to create their own television station for free. When our video guide comes up on the TV, you will be able to choose from your cable channels, TVME Business Channels, TVME Celebrity Channels, Licensed Web Content and then “your” channel and your friend’s channels. Shambro said, “We are creating the New Video Internet. The Genos cable box and video guide is the new browser and TVME is our way of getting people to build a video website for the new VNET (video internet) that Genos is creating. Our exclusive channels will be created by you, the consumer.” Genos has filed 6 patents that surround the service and its offerings. We are not really focusing on Internet Media Search and Indexing like GoogleTV, or DVD by mail with and Internet Backup like Roku/Netflix. Genos will change the way you view the television.

Genos is the leader in the Internet audio and video space. Releases like this are necessary to keep the consumer educated.

BBC Highlights E-Waste in Africa as an International Scandal

- BBC 3 programme alleges malpractice in UK public sector recycling and raises questions about how you ensure that your IT equipment is recycled safely and responsibly states Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone -

STAFFORD, England -- In the recent BBC3 programme, "Blood, Sweat & Luxuries: Gold and E-Waste" on 11 May 2010 and viewable here: http://bbc.co.uk/i/sch78/?t=38m46s IT equipment from several high profile UK public sector organisations was alleged to have made its way to site in Ghana as e-waste in Africa, where young children were seen scavenging for recoverable electronic components to sell for scrap value. This alleged illegal transportation of IT waste from the UK as has raised questions about how any organisation can ensure that its unneeded equipment is recycled, re-used or disposed of, in an acceptable and responsible fashion.

Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone http://stonegroup.co.uk, the UK's largest privately-owned computer hardware manufacturer and public sector specialists, comments, "European laws exist to prevent such UK IT waste ever reaching countries such as Ghana in this way. But, as this programme has highlighted, these laws may not be controlling the recycling market as well as they could be, with some recycling providers operating in the UK transporting waste illegally rather than recovering or disposing of it correctly."

Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone, continues, "I am bitterly disappointed and upset to see that IT hardware from highly reputable organisations has somehow made its way to rubbish sites on another continent, such as those shown in Ghana. I am certain that those organisations who were highlighted, had entered into an agreement with their recycling providers in good faith, fully trusting that the old hardware would either be recycled or that any working units would be deployed to countries like Ghana, or other African countries in desperate need of actual working IT equipment."

Howell adds, "These UK public sector organisations and bodies have been let down badly by "cowboy suppliers" who have not taken adequate care to ensure that the systems being replaced will be responsibly recycled, and not left as e-waste in Africa. Not to mention the harm that such irresponsible behaviour is doing to the environment as a whole and specifically to the countries in which the waste is dumped."

Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone, explains, "There are recycling companies out there for the UK public sector who will take responsibility for recovering appropriate IT hardware and re-deploying it through the proper channels. Any equipment that is not fit for recovery will be recycled in line with the present stringent legislation and put back into manufacturing processes where possible."

Following the full implementation of the WEEE (Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment) Directive in 2007, Stone met the challenge head on and invested in excess of 500,000 pounds Sterling to equip its own Authorised Treatment Facility, fully licensed by the Environment Agency.

Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone comments, "Whilst every other UK IT manufacturer engages third parties to discharge their producer obligations, Stone manages the entire lifecycle of the hardware it manufactures from 'cradle to grave', which in turn affords us control over the environmental impact of our products. In the past twelve months absolutely nothing has even gone to UK landfill."

Stone has collected over 500 tonnes of redundant IT from its UK public sector customers over the last 12 months and, in line with the recovery/re-use objective of the WEEE Directive, recovered 74%. The remaining 26% underwent a volume reduction and segregation process in-house, before the various output streams were returned to the remanufacturing industries. 0% went to landfill, and the majority of recovered (working) equipment is supplied by Stone to UK public sector customers.

Stone also recently became the premier sponsor of IT Schools Africa (www.itschoolsafrica.org), a branch of the Isbourne Foundation (registered charity no. 1051622). IT Schools Africa supplies and supports IT donations to school projects throughout Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania. Its support not only provides for the supply of equipment and training the teachers, it also ensures the kit is responsibly disposed of at the end of its secondary life, preventing e-waste in Africa.

Andy Howell, Group Recycling Manager at Stone, concludes, "Through our in-house recycling plant and partnership with IT Schools Africa, Stone is able to offer its UK public sector customers the assurance that redundant IT hardware will be recovered, re-used or recycled in line with the WEEE legislation and ethical standards, and that their equipment will never appear as e-waste in Africa in scenes such as those portrayed in the recent BBC3 programme."

Vision HTC Android phone with physical QWERTY keyboard

HTC Android has a high-end device with physical QWERTY keyboard in development. The device has yet codenamed Vision, but will probably have a different name if it's in the shops.

HTC Vision

The HTC Vision has a screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels, according to the device profile Tweakers.net into his hands. There is in addition to the physical presence of the qwerty keyboard is not much to do from the profile, which is almost identical to that of the HTC Desire. The Vision will run on Android, though not to the version that will be. Probably the 2.1 or 2.2, depending on when the power suits.

The code name of the device came up in a screenshot of an internal page on the site of HTC. Other code names in the screensot be seen, its LED and Glacier. Nothing is known about these devices.

Major operators to roll out LiMo phones this year

Wireless Linux group LiMo expects three major operators to offer handsets using its platform this year, to compete with news rivals Google and Apple, its executive director said. So far only Vodafone has launched a model in Europe, using its Linux-based operating system, while 60 handsets were launched using the platform, mostly in Japan and South-Korea.

Technology

"The first one was Vodafone and three other carriers will follow this year," Morgan Gillis, Executive Director at LiMo foundation, said at the Reuters Global Technology Summit.

He said three companies from the group of France Telecom, Telefonica, Verizon or SK Telecom would introduce new models using the alternative operating system by the end of this year.

LiMo is an alternative to leading operating systems from Nokia, Apple, Google or Microsoft. Mobile operators are betting on LiMo, where they have more control over software development.

Gillis said he expected that Nokia's Symbian could make a good come-back. "I think clearly there is scope and a lot of possibility to move Symbian forward and it will take another 12-15 months before we know how succesful all the efforts are," he said at the Summit, held at the Reuters office in Paris.

In the mid-term he expects a consolidation in mobile operating systems. "I think that the eventual number of industry device operating systems will be no more than five, probably four. Within that ... one platform that is not owned by any one company ... LiMo is definitely a candidate to perform that role," Gillis said.

He added Symbian, Android, Windows and Apple were the most likely candidates for other positions.

HP Faced Tough Competition in Palm Bid

Palm was hardly without suitors before HP came along with its $1.2 billion bid, according to a proxy statement Palm filed with the SEC. The statement shows that 16 companies expressed interest, six entered non-disclosure agreements and three gave Palm a serious run for its money.

New details have emerged regarding Hewlett-Packard’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm. While the smartphone maker may have been financially struggling, it was hardly an unnoticed wallflower before HP came along, according to a proxy statement Palm filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The statement reads a bit like a novella, detailing the advancements, negotiations and refusals that occurred in the weeks leading up to HP’s April 28 announcement.

According to the statement, 16 companies expressed interest in Palm between Feb. 25 and April 1, and six — HP included — entered into nondisclosure agreements and met with Palm and its advisers to review private information. HP is the only company directly named in the statement, with the others referred to as Company A, etc.

On April 13, HP made its first move for Palm, offering $4.75 per share, or approximately $1 billion, and requesting a 30-day period of exclusive negotiations. Company A followed by offering $600 million in cash, while Company B proposed a stock-for-stock transaction that “did not specify the value of the proposed consideration,” according to the statement.

Following the offers from companies A and B, Palm told HP that it wouldn’t consider an exclusive negotiating period unless HP upped its offer. On April 17, however, HP reaffirmed its proposal for $4.75 in cash for each share of Palm.

Offering its respects to A and B, Palm declined both deals, and on April 18 a Company C offered $6 to $7 cash per share, with the stipulation that a deal take place within 14 days. The next day, Palm sent both HP and Company C draft merger agreements.

On April 20 and 21, senior management at Palm, HP, Qatalyst Partners and Goldman Sachs met again, and on April 22 HP increased its offer to $5 per share, with the request that “Palm agree to up to a 28-day period of exclusive negotiations with HP with an objective of entering into a merger agreement as soon as practicable.”

Company C countered with a reduced offer of $5.50 per share and the request that “Palm agree to a period of exclusive negotiations lasting until April 26.”

Courted from both sides, Palm looked to sweeten the deal. On April 24 it told HP that “to remain in the process, HP must improve its offer significantly and immediately.” That same day, HP financial advisors responded with an offer of $5.70 per share and the request of a five-day exclusivity period. The following day, reports the statement, “HP delivered a letter confirming this proposal with a target announcement date of close of business on April 27 and sent a draft exclusivity agreement covering such period on April 26.”

On April 28, the two made their big announcement.

"We anticipate that with the webOS [Palm's proprietary mobile operating system], we'll be able to aggressively deploy an integrated platform that will allow HP to own the entire customer experience, to nurture and grow the developer community, and provide a rich media experience for our customers," Tom Bradley, executive vice president of HP’s Personal Systems group, said in a Webcast that day.

While the comment suggested that the Palm purchase could offer HP a way into the exploding smartphone market, it’s rumored that HP additionally has plans to relaunch its cancelled Slate tablet, which was to run Windows 7, as the HP Hurricane, a tablet running webOS.

Since the launch of the Apple iPad, the tablet market has been rejuvenated, with Sony the most recent electronics maker to admit it’s considering joining the fray and research firm BCG reporting that within the next three years, its expects 50 to 75 percent of consumers to purchase a tablet-style device.

While the identities of the Palm suitors may remain a secret, thanks to Palm’s discretion, a company referred to in the statement as Company D contacted Palm on March 18 to “discuss an intellectual property transaction but did not make a proposal to acquire Palm.” Further, says the statement, “Company D did not enter into a nondisclosure agreement,” which means new details — or at least the identity of Company D — may yet still emerge.

Immediately following the mid-April news that Palm was available, HTC, Lenovo, Motorola and Nokia were all named as potential purchasers.

HP Envisions webOS-Powered, PC-Less Printers

Hewlett-Packard has grand designs on how to radically change the laser printer, a product it brought to the mass market after Xerox invented it in the 1970s.

Following its acquisition of mobile device maker Palm, HP (NYSE: HPQ) has made no secret of its intention to take Palm's webOS beyond the smartphone, but a business printer was probably not the first device people had in mind.

While laser printers have advanced in areas of color support and speed, some things haven't changed, such as how to print to one. Today's laser printers require a network connection through a PC, which in turn is connected to a network.

But with webOS, a lightweight Linux implementation that has native Wi-Fi support, HP is envisioning a new approach: Add a Wi-Fi antenna to the printer and it can talk directly to the Internet, with no intermediate PC needed.

HP CEO Mark Hurd made the first hints of using the webOS in printers on Tuesday's earnings call with analysts.

"When we think of printers, you’ve now got a whole series of Web-connected printers that, as they connect to the Web, need an OS. We prefer to have that OS in our case to be our IP, where we can control the customer experience as we always have in the printing business, and that’s a big deal to us," he told analysts.

The second hint came from Vyomesh "VJ" Joshi, executive vice president of HP's Imaging and Printing Group, during a Reuters technology summit in San Francisco. He said a Web printing initiative was in the works but declined to provide any further details. He did say that webOS would not be limited to HP's consumer products, like phones and tablets.

One of the obvious choices for such printing capabilities is making it simpler to send photos from a phone straight to a printer, without requiring a PC as an intermediary. "A lot of images are trapped in smartphones," Joshi said at the event.

HP came out with what it called "the world's first Web-connected printer" in mid-2009, called HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web. It was operated by a group of widgets created in HTML5 and Java and was aimed at printing Google maps, tickets from Fandango, coupons, recipes, and other minor stuff.

Charles King, principal analyst with Pund-IT, found the idea intriguing and fitting. "It's a logical extension as we move away from traditional PCs and even notebooks onto tablets and other wireless-enabled devices, figuring out how to seamlessly include printers into the circle of machines makes great sense," he told InternetNews.com.

People don't want to be tied to a desk, and likewise, freeing up a business printer from a PC only increases the flexibility of an office layout and infrastructure, he added. "That's part of the point of mobility is not to be tethered to a central computing device. Creating some interesting interconnections between printers and other machines makes great sense," King said.

Palm Pre Plus Arrives on ATandT, Day After App Catalog Bogs

The Palm Pre Plus went on sale May 16 on the AT&T network, the day after the Palm’s App Catalog store was felled by technical difficulties. The problem was said to be resolved in time for the Pre Plus’ big debut.

The Palm Pre Plus is now available on the AT&T network.

As promised, the Pre Plus is priced at $149.99. While that’s $100 more than Verizon charges for its version of the smartphone, the AT&T package includes the Palm Touchstone — its neat-o charger that, like an electric toothbrush, charges through induction — free overnight shipping and a waived activation fee.

The Pre Plus’ details include a 3.1-inch touchscreen, a slide-out QWERTY keypad, backlit keys, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, firmware that updates over the air, 16GB of internal storage and world phone capabilities.

There’s also mobile email support, including Microsoft Direct Push, a 3-megapixel camera with video capture, text and instant messaging, a Web browser, a music player and of course the well-liked webOS operating system.

Pre Plus users also have easy access to the Palm App Catalog — though some may have had an awkward introduction to the app store, which experienced some technical difficulties over the weekend.

“If you’ve experienced any issues downloading or updating apps from the Palm App Catalog recently, rest assured that Palm is actively working to remedy the situation,” Joe Hayashi, Palm’s product manager, posted to the Palm Blog May 15.

“If you’ve purchased an app, the transaction has been properly recorded and as soon as this issue is resolved, you’ll be able to access all apps you’ve purchased (or, in the case of free apps, requested to download),” Hayashi continued. “We believe the situation will be resolved soon, although some apps may begin working properly again sooner than others.”

The post was updated later that day to say that the App Catalog is once again “fully operational.” According to MyPre.com, there are now about 1,700 apps in the App Catalog — which trails well behind Google’s Android Market, at approximately 38,000, and Apple’s App Store, with its 185,000-plus offerings.

The Pre Plus’ arrival on the AT&T network marks its third official launch — it’s additionally available on Verizon and Sprint — though Palm says you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

“We’re just getting started. As noted at the unveiling of the Palm webOS platform at the 2009 CES, this platform was designed to evolve and scale to drive at least the next decade of innovative mobile devices,” Jon Zilber wrote on the Palm Blog May 16. “But as Abraham Lincoln noted, ‘The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time." So if you’ve been waiting for the day you could pick up a Palm webOS phone on AT&T, the future arrived today.”

Palm is in the process of being bought by Hewlett-Packard for $1.2 billion.

ATandT to Begin Selling Palm Pixi Plus June 6

AT&T will join rival Verizon Wireless in offering the Palm Pre’s younger sibling, the Pixi Plus. The Pixi, which features webOS and a $49.99 price tag, will go on sale June 6.

The Palm Pre Plus won’t be on the AT&T Wireless network without the Pixi Plus—its less-expensive, non-sliding younger sibling—for very long. According to the carrier’s site, the Pixi Plus will make its AT&T debut June 6.

The June 6 arrival will make AT&T the third network to offer the smartphone—Sprint and Verizon Wireless were the first two, though in fairness Sprint offers the original Palm Pixi, minus the Plus.

At either rate, however, users get a 3G-running, WiFi-connecting smartphone running Palm’s webOS—which was said to be a major incentive for HP’s recent purchase of Palm. The OS features perks such as the ability to multitask between multiple applications and calls; a universal search feature that will hunt through phone contacts, apps and even online sources such as Google, Google Maps, Wikipedia and Twitter.

The Pixi Plus also pairs its full QWERTY keypad with a 2.63-inch multitouch screen with a 320 by 400 resolution. GPS is built in, as is a 2-megapixel camera with flash, geo-tagging and video capture. The Pixi Plus supports multiple types of e-mail accounts, including Microsoft Exchange, Direct Push technology and POP3/IMAP accounts, such as Gmail and Yahoo. IM, SMS and MMS are also supported, along with multiple audio and video players, and there’s an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor and an accelerometer.

On board are 8GB of memory, and on the AT&T network users can expect 5.5 hours of talk time—versus 5.2 on Verizon. A 3.5mm stereo headphone jack is also built in, and the device weighs 3.26 ounces and measures 2.17 by 4.37 by 0.43 inches.

Also like Verizon Wireless, AT&T signed on with the then-struggling Palm to try and get the Pre Plus into more hands than Sprint managed with the original Pre. Shortly ater posting a terrible fiscal third quarter March 18, Palm went looking for a buyer, and on April 28—after considerable negotiations—Hewlett-Packard announced it was acquiring the smartphone maker.

AT&T customers can sign up to receive a reminder when the Palm Pixi Plus officially goes on sale.

HP Windows-Based Slate Tablet Alive and Well: Report

An HP vice president has reportedly confirmed that HP still plans to release its Windows 7-based Slate tablet in late October. While the timing of an HP tablet with webOS is uncertain, the exec confirmed that HP is planning for webOS tablets and smartphones, though not netbooks.

The Hewlett-Packard Slate, a tablet device running Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS, will go on sale toward the end of HP’s fiscal year in October, DigiTimes reported May 21, citing Monty Wong, vice president of personal computing systems at HP Taiwan.

Following HP’s April 28 announcement that it was acquiring smartphone maker Palm, rumors began to swirl that the company’s planned tablet, the HP Slate, had been canceled and that a webOS-running tablet would replace it.

On May 10, citing “an insider at HP,” The Examiner reported that HP could be releasing a tablet running webOS as early as the third quarter.

While Wong offered no word on the timing of a webOS tablet, he reportedly did confirm that HP plans to, at some point, roll out such as a device, as well as webOS-based smartphones. However, he said HP doesn’t find the OS to be a suitable fit for netbooks, which it believes to be more like traditional computers.

Wong added that HP will announce more details about its plans for webOS once its acquisition of Palm is completed toward the end of July, and that, alongside the HP Slate’s October launch, consumers could see a variety of supportive software and applications.

With Apple’s iPad rejuvenating the tablet form factor and enjoying strong sales, many believed HP could have a better chance at a hit with a webOS-based tablet, rather than one with longtime partner Microsoft. IMS Research analyst Anna Hunt wrote in a May 3 research note that HP’s use of Windows 7 “would translate to a higher cost to the consumer and could mean more strain on the processor.

Analyst Chris Schreck, also with IMS, additionally pointed out that the easy-to-develop-for webOS might also better attract application developers. “[WebOS] uses standard development languages already common among PC developers,” Schreck wrote. “If HP can create a compelling tablet offering that people are willing to buy, the barriers to entry might be fairly minimal."

Analyst with Ken Hyers, with Technology Business Research, has likewise noted that HP’s acquisition of Palm gives it new leverage with which to compete against Apple.

"[The] tablet computing space has not yet been well defined by any single manufacturer or OS, giving HP, with its extensive PC manufacturing expertise, a chance to become a key player in the new market segment," Hyers wrote in an April 29 report.

There is, however, a certain safety in offering a Microsoft-based product, Hyers later told eWEEK on a call. “No enterprise IT manager has ever been fired for buying Microsoft products," Hyers added.

HP CEO Hurd Sees Palm WebOS in Printers, Other Devices

During a conference call to announce strong quarterly earnings, HP CEO Mark Hurd said that the goal of HP’s proposed $1.2 billion acquisition of ailing Palm is the company’s mobile operating system, WebOS, which HP plans to spread throughout its stable of connected devices, including Web-enabled printers.

Hewlett-Packard has plans for Palm’s WebOS mobile operating system that go well beyond smartphones and tablet PCs, such as Web-connected printers.

During a conference call with analysts and reporters to announce fiscal second-quarter 2010 results May 18, HP President and CEO Mark Hurd said that while he certainly wants to grow Palm’s smartphone business, the real key to the proposed $1.2 billion deal is Palm’s WebOS.

"[The proposed deal] isn't precisely a smartphone play, as I've seen some people write," Hurd said. “It is, for us, strategically broader.”

HP offers a wide range of connected devices that would benefit from having a common operating system, he said.

“We expect to leverage WebOS into a variety of form factors, including ‘slates’ and Web-connected printers," Hurd said.

HP had been developing a tablet PC called Slate that was set to run on Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system and challenge Apple’s popular iPad. However, once HP announced its intentions to buy struggling Palm, the industry soon heard that the technology giant had ditched the Slate in favor of creating another tablet, dubbed Hurricane, which will run on the widely praised WebOS platform.

Reports have said that a WebOS-powered Hurricane could hit the market as early as the third quarter. Hurd said that HP’s intention is to be a player in the tablet market, and that he saw a space that would not be dominated by a single product, but rather it will be a robust space with a number of alternatives from different vendors.

As the world becomes more mobile, there will be a wide range of preferences in what customers want from their devices. They will demand choice, he said.

Hurd said that despite the change of direction in HP’s tablet plans, Microsoft is still an important partner for HP.

"Microsoft is probably one of the best relationships we've got in our company, and they're still extremely important to us," he said. "There are a couple of form factors, though, that are very attractive for us, and these small form factors are where we think the IP can be very additive."

Hurd said the real driving force behind the Palm acquisition is WebOS. With so many connected devices in their product portfolio, HP officials believe it’s important to have a common operating system on which to run them, he said.

“It really has more to do with the intellectual property and the fact that when you look across the HP ecosystem of interconnected devices, it is a large family of devices and we think of printers, you’ve now got a whole series of Web-connected printers, and as they connect to the Web, [they] need an OS,” he said.

He also hinted that HP could use Palm’s app store for the printers and other devices.

The Palm acquisition, which is still pending, was one of several deals that were topics of discussion during the earnings call. Hurd noted that HP’s $2.7 billion deal for networking vendor 3Com closed in April 12, and that since that time, 3Com had added about $50 million in revenue to HP’s bottom line in the second quarter.

He reiterated that a key benefit is that by combining HP’s ProCurve products and VirtualConnect technology with 3Com’s portfolio, HP will have a strong presence not only on the edge of the network, but also in the data center.

Hurd also countered a question from an analyst who suggested that HP’s $13.9 billion acquisition of services company EDS is not working out as planned, as growth in services is not as fast as in other divisions. He said that EDS—now called HP Enterprise Services—gives the company a stronger services arm.

“We feel really good about the services business,” he said.

Cathie Lesjak, HP’s chief financial officer, suggested that HP’s acquisitions won’t end with Palm.

Overall, HP had a strong quarter, earning $2.2 billion in profits on $30.8 billion in revenue, significant jumps over the same time last year, when the worldwide recession was in full swing. During that quarter, the company earned $1.7 billion on $27.4 billion in revenues.

HP saw a 28 percent jump in profit and 13 percent increase in revenue.

Hurd said the strong performances were felt in each segment of HP’s product portfolio, and in each region.

The strong numbers also convinced HP to up its revenue targets for the year, to 8 to 9 percent over 2009. For the current quarter, HP is expecting revenue of between $29.7 billion and $30 billion.

Google Apps highlights – 5/21/2010

It’s been an active and exciting week on the Google Apps team, including the release of several new features at Google I/O, our annual developers conference.

Google Calendar gets a new look
The Google Calendar team has been doing some spring cleaning. On Wednesday, we revealed Google Calendar’s new cleaner design. We streamlined text that appears in the interface, made the controls more compact and created more space on screen to display information from your calendar.

New themes for forms in Google Docs
We also spruced up forms in Google Docs with the addition of 24 new themes for online surveys that you create. As you’re editing your form, just click the “Theme” button to browse the gallery and change the look and feel of your form.

Drag images into Gmail messages
On Tuesday, we simplified a common action: inserting images in a Gmail message. If you use Google Chrome, now you can drag images files from your computer’s desktop or folders onto the body of a message you’re composing, and Gmail will add the image to your message. You can easily resize the image right in the Gmail compose window before hitting “Send.”

Google Voice open to students
We’ve heard from many students how Google Voice makes it easier to deal with the process of getting a new dorm phone number and moving back and forth between school and home each year. Voicemail transcriptions that students can glance at while in class are also useful. To help more students take advantage of these tools, last Friday we opened up Google Voice for students with .edu email addresses. Try it out!

Google Wave (Labs) open to all
Google Wave is a new team collaboration application that brings discussion and debate right into the context of content people are working on together. For the last year, Google Wave has been available to a limited set of testers and early users, but on Wednesday we moved Wave to Google Labs and now anyone can sign up. If you use Google Apps at your business, school or organization, your IT manager can enable Wave from the Google Apps control panel now, too.

More Google applications coming for Google Apps customers
Speaking of new applications for businesses, schools and organizations, we also just announced that starting this summer, Google Apps customers will be able to sign into Blogger, Picasa Web Albums, Google Reader, AdWords and many more Google services with their Google Apps accounts. If you’re the Google Apps administrator for your organization, read more about how this change will work and sign up to start testing. We welcome your feedback.

Contextual gadgets in Gmail
Gmail can already display previews of documents, videos and photo albums so you don’t have to switch back and forth between windows, and now Google Apps customers can add other contextual gadgets from the Google Apps Marketplace. There are already gadgets for project management, social networking, rich contact profiles and much more, and we hope developers will build their own contextual gadgets with the new Gmail API.

Apps Script
Google Apps Script lets customers automate business processes ranging from expense approvals to time-sheet tracking to ticket management and order fulfillment. On Tuesday we launched Google Apps Script improvements, including Java database connectivity, custom user interfaces for scripts, the ability to invoke scripts from any web page and integrations with more Google services, like Google Maps. To help you get started with scripts, we also released a new set of script templates with pre-built functionality.

Google Calendar Connector for Lotus Notes®
Many companies still using old legacy technologies are looking to make a seamless switch to the cloud, and now Lotus Notes customers can move to Google Apps in phases, at their own pace. Last week we launched the Google Calendar Connector for Lotus Notes®, which allows businesses to switch to Google Apps department by department. Google Apps users in your organization can look up free/busy info for coworkers still on Lotus Notes and vice versa.

Who’s gone Google?
Thousands more businesses and schools have “gone Google” since our last update, including Arista Networks (where Andy Bechtolsheim serves as Chairman) and Smart Furniture. Both of these companies had a common motivation for moving to Google Apps: being able to focus their precious resources on core business challenges by letting technology experts at Google handle the day-to-day operations of running an email system.
