Most 2010 HTC Android phones will get Froyo ...in 2010

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Like many of you, we are already wondering if and when our favorite Android phones will get the Froyo Android 2.2 upgrade. By "favorite Android phones" we naturally mean the hotness made by HTC. So, we asked and here's the deal: if your phone was released in 2010, you have a good chance of getting Froyo. Definitely on deck: The Desire, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G, MyTouch Slide, and future models. We don't have a specific ETA yet, but "second half of this year" is certainly a lot more promising than "someday, maybe."

Here's the official word:

[...] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet.

Android Army Gaining Ground

Mobile ad network Millennial Media published its latest report on the mobile device space this morning and it reveals some intriguing trends in smartphone market leadership. It has a particularly interesting story to tell about Google’s (GOOG) Android OS.

According to the Millenial Media’s April MobileMix report, Android ad requests on its network rose 77 percent month-over-month, and have grown 282 percent since January. During the same period, ad impressions from Android devices also rose, and Android smartphone manufacturer HTC grabbed a large enough number to become the fifth-largest device maker on Millennial Media’s network.

The buffet of new Android devices that have arrived at market over the past few months, Droid and Nexus One among them, has clearly spiked adoption of the OS.

With a 10 percent share of ad impressions, Android is now the third largest operating system among those the company tracks, falling between RIM’s (RIMM) BlackBerry OS with a 17 percent share and Windows Mobile OS with a five percent share.

Android may not be the leading OS on Millennial Media’s network–that honor belongs to Apple (AAPL) with its 62 percent share of U.S. smartphone impressions–but it is the fastest growing.

Another mobile advertising market research study, I realize. But Millennial currently reaches 83 percent of the U.S. mobile audience. That makes it the largest mobile ad network in terms of reach, so these metrics are worth paying attention to.

A few other data points worth noting:

* iPhone OS ad requests decreased 17 percent month-over-month in April. Still, since January, they’ve risen 1.5 percent.
* BlackBerry OS ad requests grew 10 percent month over month. Since January, they’ve increased more than 36 percent.
* iPad ad requests spiked 77 percent week over week for the first full month the device was available for purchase.

What is WebM?

WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed for the web. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure is based on the Matroska media container.
What is the VP8 video codec?

VP8 is a highly efficient video compression technology that was developed by On2 Technologies. Google acquired On2 in February, 2010. For more information, see the “VP8 Video Codec” section below.
What is the Vorbis audio codec?

Vorbis is an open-source audio compression technology. It is an independent project of the Xiph Foundation. For more information about Vorbis, please visit www.vorbis.org.
A valid WebM file can only contain VP8 video and Vorbis audio in a .webm container. Why did you define WebM so narrowly?

We decided to define WebM files in this way because we wanted to do what’s best for users. Users just want video to work, they don’t want to worry about supported codecs, file formats, and so on. After much discussion with browser makers, tool developers and others, we reached a consensus that a narrowly defined format would cause the least confusion for users. If a user has a .webm file, they can be confident that it will play in any browser or media player that supports WebM.
Why do I want WebM?

A key factor in the web’s success is that its core technologies such as HTML, HTTP, and TCP/IP are open and freely implementable. Though video is also now core to the web experience, there is unfortunately no open and free video format that is on par with the leading commercial choices. To that end, we started the WebM project, a broadly-backed community effort to develop an open web media format.

WebM was built for the web. By testing hundreds of thousands of videos with widely varying characteristics, we found that the VP8 video codec delivers high-quality video while efficiently adapting to varying processing and bandwidth conditions across a broad range of devices. VP8’s highly efficient bandwidth usage and lower storage requirements can help publishers recognize immediate cost savings. Also, the relative simplicity of VP8 makes it easy to integrate into existing environments and requires comparatively little manual tuning in the encoder to produce high-quality results.
How do I play WebM files?

To play WebM files, all you need is a supported web browser or media player.
Where can I watch WebM videos?

YouTube is supporting WebM in addition to its existing formats as part of its HTML5 experiment. For instructions, see our Users page.
How can I convert my personal video files to WebM?

Creating WebM files is easy. You can use any of the supported software products on our Tools page.
How can I judge WebM video quality for myself?

Download our VP8 SDK, which includes scripts that are preconfigured to get the best out of VP8. The kit includes links to the same files used in our own testing. You can test VP8 decoding speed using FFmpeg and tools in the Chromium source tree (for example, media_bench).

Also, playback performance is still not optimized in the Developer Preview releases of the browsers that support WebM. The computational efficiencies of the VP8 codec are more accurately measured today using codec-level development tools in the SDKs. Optimizations of the browser implementations are forthcoming.
If I use publishing tools that do not handle WebM today, how should I incorporate WebM into my workflow?

Visit our Tools page for a list of open source and commercial products that support creating WebM files. In the coming weeks we will release QuickTime and DirectShow plug-ins that will enable many third-party encoding applications to produce WebM files.
How do I build my website in a way that takes advantage of WebM but still supports other formats?

There are open-source libraries such as the Kaltura HTML5 Media Library, Open Standard Media (OSM) Player, Projekktor, Modernizr and others that make accommodating multiple video formats in a single page very easy.
Encoding WebM videos seems really slow. What are you doing about that?

For the Developer Preview we focused on optimizing the VP8 decoder. Today, encoding VP8 in “best quality” mode is the slowest configuration. Using “good quality” mode with the speed parameter set between 0 and 5 will provide a range of speeds. Best Quality is admittedly slow. We have room for great improvement on both the encoder and the decoder. We have only begun to optimize the VP8 encoder and believe that we will make very substantial speed improvements soon — especially with your help!
The WebM project is labeled “developer preview.” What does that mean?

Today we are releasing APIs, source code, and specifications that will be useful to you if you are a developer; they are much less useful if you are not. We hope developers will use what we’ve released to build WebM as a “preview” feature in their products.

While we’re proud of our quality and performance today, there is more work to be done. The VP8 bitstream is final, but some features of the WebM format are not yet complete. We expect to achieve better visual quality and performance in an official release soon while also doing a lot more testing. You can help us get there by helping us tackle our roadmap.
Are VP8 or WebM subject to change?

The VP8 and WebM specifications as released on May 19th, 2010 are final. We believe that the code and tools can evolve and improve for many years without requiring changes to the core specifications. We’ll maintain a separate branch of the code, however, for bold new ideas that could alter the specifications. If there are significant improvements to warrant a new revision we might adopt them, but only after careful consideration and after discussing suggested changes with the WebM community.
Are you encouraging people to simply test WebM or actually use it?

The VP8 and WebM specifications as released on May 19th, 2010 are final and we encourage everyone to use them for developing applications. Google, Mozilla and Opera are all adding WebM support to their browsers and all videos that are 720p or larger uploaded to YouTube after May 19th will be be encoded in WebM as part of its HTML5 experiment. The WebM/VP8 source code and content creation tools are a Developer Preview with room for further improvement of the code. We encourage the community to help us complete the work items on our roadmap.
When do you expect WebM to evolve from the “developer preview”?

We expect to provide regular updates, and when the WebM community is sufficiently happy with our joint results and is ready to move forward, the developer preview will end.
WebM and VP8 are open-source. How do I get the source and contribute code?

The code, specifications and development guidelines are available on our Code page.
Do I have to be a programmer to use WebM and VP8?

You only need to be a programmer if you want to build WebM support into a software application or contribute improvements to the VP8 or Vorbis source code. To play WebM files, all you need is a supported browser or media player. To create WebM content you can use the software listed on our Tools page. Also, YouTube is supporting WebM as part of its HTML5 experiment.
Is the WebM project owned by Google or is it independent? What if Google changes its mind?

WebM is an open-source project sponsored by Google. Google licenses its intellectual property that is covered by VP to VP8 users for free, under a BSD-style license. These licenses are revocable only if the licensee files a patent infringement lawsuit against the VP8 code that Google released.
If I convert my video files to WebM, can you guarantee that they won’t become obsolete in the future?

WebM is a new format and will likely evolve over time. We will try to keep the bitstream constant and provide re-encoding tools as appropriate.
VP8 Video Codec
Is VP8 the codec that Google bought as part of the On2 Technologies acquisition?

Yes.
If I have a video card that accelerates video playback, will it accelerate VP8?

The performance of VP8 is very good in software, and we’re working closely with many video card and silicon vendors to add VP8 hardware acceleration to their chips.
Can I use VP8 with a file container other than WebM or an audio codec other than Vorbis?

Yes, the license gives you the freedom to use VP8 in virtually any way you like. It should be noted, however, that when VP8 is used in a container other than WebM it will not play in browsers that support WebM.
If other applications on my system use VP8, does this mean my WebM files are compatible with those apps?

VP8 is an an open-source technology and developers are free to use it in any application, but the only applications that will play VP8 video inside WebM files are those that support WebM.
What are the limits of VP8 in terms of resolution, datarate, and framerate?

VP8 uses 14 bits for width and height, so the maximum resolution is 16384x16384 pixels. VP8 places no constraints on framerate or datarate.
WebM playback seems to use a lot of processor resources on my computer. Why is this?

The Developer Preview releases of browsers supporting WebM are not yet fully optimized and therefore have a higher computational footprint for screen rendering than we expect for the general releases. The computational efficiencies of the VP8 codec are more accurately measured today using codec-level development tools in the SDKs. Optimizations of the browser implementations are forthcoming.
WebM Video File Format
How do I know if I have WebM installed on my computer?

WebM isn’t something you install on its own. It’s deployed within application software such as web browsers, media players and media plug-ins. We maintain an up-to-date list of products that support WebM playback.
How do I know if a video I am looking at is encoded in VP8?

A video is encoded in VP8 if it has the file extension .webm. If you don’t have access to the file extension, reading the file properties (for example, using Get Info on Mac OS) will reveal a MIME type of video/webm. If you are playing WebM video from YouTube, a “WebM” icon will appear in the player toolbar.
Will WebM files play on my TV, set-top box, PVR, etc.?

Stay tuned! The WebM community is working with hardware manufacturers to bring WebM support to a wide range of devices.
Are there any portable media players that can play WebM files?

There are none in the market today but we’re working with hardware manufacturers to bring WebM support to a wide range of devices.
When will other Google products support WebM and VP8?

WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements.
Licensing
Please explain how WebM is “royalty-free.”

Some video codecs require content distributors and manufacturers to pay patent royalties to use the intellectual property within the codec. WebM and the codecs it supports (VP8 video and Vorbis audio) require no royalty payments of any kind. You can do whatever you want with the WebM code without owing money to anybody. For more information, see the License page.
What does this license let me do?

Like most BSD-style licenses, this license allows you to use the VP8 code with a minimum of restrictions on your use. You can use the code in proprietary software as well as open source software. The main difference between the standard BSD license and the VP8 license is that this license grants patent rights, and terminates if patent litigation is filed alleging infringement of the code.
Do I need to release the source if I make changes?

No, the license does not require you to release source if you make changes. However, we would love to see any changes you make and possibly incorporate them, so if you want to participate please visit the Code page and submit some patches.
Why didn’t you use the Apache license?

The Apache license is somewhat similar in effect to this license. The main reason it was not used is that filing patent litigation against someone using the Apache 2 license only terminates patent rights granted under the license. Whoever filed the litigation would still be able to use the software they are suing over and still be in compliance with the license. This license, however, terminates all rights when patent litigation is filed. Rather than modify the Apache license to meet our needs, which would probably lead to significant confusion, we went with the simpler approach of a BSD style license + patent provision.
Why didn’t you use the GPL license?

One of the goals of having this code licensed as liberally as possible is to encourage adoption by as many users as possible. This includes both proprietary and free software. Using the GPL license would not be a good match for this goal.
Doesn’t this cause license proliferation?

We could not identify a license that met the specific needs of this project as described above, so we based this License on two well-known licenses (Apache and BSD) instead of completely starting from scratch.
Can I take this code and re-license it under my favorite license?

We strongly urge you not to try to re-license this code under a different license. The choice of license was carefully thought out and preserving one license will lead to the greatest flexibility and adoption of the code.
What if someone gets the code from Google and gives it to me without changes. Do I have a patent license from Google?

Yes, you still have the right to redistribute and you still have a patent license for Google’s patents that cover the code that Google released.
What if Google receives or buys a patent that covers the code I receive sometime after I receive the code. Do I have a patent license for that patent?

Yes, you still have the right to redistribute and you still have a patent license for Google’s patents that cover the code that Google released.
What if someone makes a change to the code and gives it to me. Do I have a patent license from Google for that change?

You still have the right to redistribute but no patent license for the changes (if there are any patents covering it). We can’t give patent licenses for changes people make after we distribute the code, as we have no way to predict what those changes will be. Other common licenses take the same approach, including the Apache license.
What if my competitor brings patent litigation against me for something unrelated to the code. Does he or she still have a patent license?

Yes, he still has the right to redistribute and he still has a patent license for Google’s patents that cover the code that Google released.

The Engineering Behind Flash Player 10.1

Today represents an exciting milestone for the Flash Platform as we officially launch the public beta release of Flash Player 10.1 on Android-based devices. The Beta release is now available and as soon as Google releases their update to the Android OS, code-named "FroYo", users will be able to get the new Flash Player installed over the air from the Android Market. The public beta release is your opportunity to try out our dramatically updated browser-based runtime with a deep focus on performance, battery life, memory management, user experience on mobile devices, and other mobile-specific features. With the pervasive use of Flash Player content on the web today, users will be able to experience the full extent of the web that Flash enables including video, games, animations, Rich Internet Apps, data presentations and visualizations, commerce, music, and so much more. It's great to see that our extensive technical collaboration on this with our partners is now becoming a reality. To give you some perspective on the magnitude of this release, let's look at some of the performance improvements and optimizations we made for Flash Player 10.1.

Power and Battery Optimizations

Mobile platforms are carefully tuned to deliver a broad range of capabilities while minimizing battery consumption. Flash Player 10.1 was developed to seamlessly integrate into this environment. To deliver on this objective, we added a new capability called instance management to intelligently load and play back Flash content only after it comes within view on the web page. This capability also allows us to work in conjunction with the browser to ensure the web page is loaded as quickly as possible.

A related capability we added is called pause and resume. Flash Player will automatically pause the content that is running when the browser is hidden from view or the current tab is placed in the background. Not only does this conserve power, but it allows the content to instantly hibernate should an important trigger event occur, such as an incoming phone call. Once the user returns to their browser session, the HTML page and the Flash content are returned to their exact point prior to the trigger event.

Another example of a power-saving capability we have developed is called timer throttling. Flash Player makes use of timers to control the speed of content execution. When the screen display dims, Flash Player utilizes this signal to automatically throttle back the speed at which the content is executing while the device is in this power-saving mode. In the case where the content is playing back audio or video, Flash Player will not throttle it back to ensure a seamless media playback experience.

These new capabilities in Flash Player 10.1 offer some insight into the priority we placed on conserving power and staying true to the goal of maximizing battery life on mobile devices.

Maximizing Performance

The architecture of mobile platforms is very different from desktops, laptops, and netbooks. To take advantage of these highly integrated hardware environments, we took a very comprehensive look at how Flash Player uses the CPU, GPU, memory, and storage. The Flash Player team, with engineering cooperation across our Open Screen Project partners, meticulously optimized the machine instructions used in our virtual machine, rendering engine, and media codecs to run efficiently on mobile hardware.

In the case of the ActionScript 3 virtual machine, we updated our just-in-time compiler to emit native ARM instructions to maximize the execution speed of applications on these platforms. With a significant portion of the Flash content on the web having been written in ActionScript 1 and 2, we also invested in increasing the execution speed of this content.

In addition, Flash Player will take advantage of the purpose-built hardware on the mobile device including the media decoders to optimize the playback of content such as H.264 video and AAC audio streams. This specialized hardware can often perform a specific task more efficiently than the CPU. Not only does this result in higher fidelity playback, but it can yield a nice power savings.

The investments we made in execution speed will be apparent in a broad range of content, from Flash applications to games to video, and everything in between. We took an extensive look at the performance characteristics of Flash Player in many different scenarios and drove considerable improvements in the execution speed. As a result of this work, most Flash content on the web today will execute more efficiently with no changes required to receive these benefits.

Conserving Memory

Mobile platforms have considerably less memory than most personal computers and Flash Player 10.1 includes numerous optimizations to minimize the amount of memory required for content and applications. We have added automatic compression of media in memory to matchthe typically smaller screen size and color depth of a mobile device. We have also enhanced the memory garbage collection system to work more effectively, particularly in low memory situations. We made changes to more aggressively release temporary buffers and media caches for images and audio data. These changes have translated into some dramatic improvements. In some cases, you'll see content that now automatically consumes 50% less memory with Flash Player 10.1 when compared to our previous release.

Another important enhancement we made relates to streaming media. In some cases, content such as video is buffered in memory to allow the user to quickly seek forward or backward. In the case of mobile platforms, we added a new circular buffering capability that allows Flash Player to constrain the size of the media buffer and recycle this memory as the content plays. This new capability strikes a balance between allowing the user to navigate within sequential media, like video, and the amount of memory that content can consume.

The Flash Player team also did a lot of development around low memory support, as this is a common situation on mobile devices. To protect against content that requires too much memory for the device, we added a new system that detects when memory is running low so defensive actions can be taken to prevent a crash. In this case, the Flash Player now has a set of heuristics to shut down content when resources are running low or depleted and gracefully exit the content. This work will also benefit personal computer users that have many tabs open in their browser such that their PC is operating in a low memory situation.

Usability and Interactivity

The last topic I'll cover is usability. In this case, it's critically important that Flash content on a smart phone both behave consistently with the HTML page and enable rich interactivity with media in Flash. For example, as a web page can be zoomed using a multi-touch gesture by the user, the Flash content needs to enable that to happen seamlessly. If the user rotates the phone to switch into landscape mode, the Flash content responds as you'd expect. If the user double-taps to zoom in or out, the Flash content responds in a consistent, intuitive way. We have enhanced this interaction to enable a new smart-zoom capability, bringing zoomed Flash content to the best width/height dimension for the device to enable easy viewing of video and other content in Flash. We have also added the ability for content to specify that it should automatically go into full screen mode on first interaction in order to enable easy full screen interactivity with games. This new mode is indicated to the user with a message about how to exit full screen mode on their particular device.

The Flash Player team added a number of new capabilities that are essential to smart phones. Text fields in Flash will automatically take advantage of virtual or soft keyboards for text entry when a physical input device is not available. In this case, the text field is intelligently repositioned on the screen to facilitate text input.

In addition, Flash Player exposes some of the unique capabilities of mobile platforms, including access to the accelerometer. This will allow the Flash development community to create content that leverages some of the unique capabilities. We've got more work to do here, but we're off to a good start and look forward to exposing new capabilities in the future, such as geolocation support.

These examples demonstrate the importance of ensuring that Flash content on a mobile device offers a predictable and intuitive experience to the end-user. To help ensure that we got the experience right, we conducted multiple rounds of usability testing to try out new ideas and improve the experience based on the feedback we received. Our goal was to ensure that existing content simply works as expected and ultimately allow smart phone users to experience the full glory of the web.

Looking Ahead

As we look forward, it's important to note that this is just the start of our work to bring the full Flash Player to mobile devices. We will continue to improve on this effort as we support a broad range of smart phones, tablets, televisions, and other devices. Of course, a number of these optimizations and improvements will also directly benefit Flash Player on desktop and netbook platforms. At the same time, we've seen content publishers like Sony Pictures, Nickelodeon, Miniclip, Warner Brothers, Kongregate, South Park Studios and others already optimizing their sites to deliver the best possible experience within the context of smaller screens. Developers, who are looking for tips about optimizing Flash content for mobile devices should check out this document.

Smartphones in market today that will be able to run Flash Player 10.1 include the Nexus One, DROID by Motorola, HTC Evo, HTC Incredible, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Milestone and others, but will depend on FroYo availability for a given device. Upgrade mechanisms and timing will vary by device and device manufacturer. To make it as easy as possible to install Flash Player, we are enabling over-the-air downloads which include content-initiated downloads, system software updates, and on-device app catalogs. Over time, a number of new phones are planned to ship with Flash Player 10.1 preinstalled. We're thrilled to take the first step today and can't wait to see how millions of Flash developers will innovate for mobile devices.

I hope you're as excited about the future and the opportunities ahead as we are.

Sr. Director, Flash Player Engineering

HTC Legend GSM/UMTS Smartphone Review

Mobile-review have posted a review of the HTC Legend. Here are the phone's features and their final impression.

The reception quality had no problems. The use of aluminum casing has not affected it, which could have been expected. Speech quality during the call is not bad, nothing more to say. The speaker has some extra volume left, under normal conditions (home, office) the maximum level is superfluous. Loudspeaker has medium volume, should you need a very loud ringtone you can select a tune from a standard set, most of them sound very loudly. Vibrating alert is medium or a bit stronger, when the device is in the jean pocket you feel it vibrating even while walking.

When I just met HTC Legend before the mobile congress in Barcelona, the device caused very warm feelings and seemed like something unusual against the background of other modern smartphones, most of which are look alikes. Now the way I look at the Legend changed not because of its similarity with HTC Hero. The reason is another Taiwanese manufacturer’s device – HTC Desire. If there was no such smartphone and in its place in Europe we had HTC EVO 4G, the HD2 analog running Android, the real flagship, the impressions from the Legend could have been totally different. But the Desire exists and it is available, and costs only 80 Euro more than the Legend. Now it is clear that it is with the Desire the company hit the jackpot - the device became popular immediately after the sales began.

Against the Desire background the Legend doesn’t look that much of a legend, it is just HTC Hero in aluminum case with two reasons that can get you to buy one. The first is if you are already using HTC Hero from its very first days and you became so close, all you need from a new device is the same Hero, just a bit updated. And the second one is that you are really eager to have a smartphone in the aluminum casing. Should one of the two reasons suit you, then HTC Legend is what you have been looking for; if not, but you are searching for an Android-based device, you’d better look towards the Desire. Taking into account all my love towards HTC I could not understand the logic of these two existing at the same time at the same place.

Apple keeps ahead of Android as global smartphone sales surge in Q1

Apple has maintained its lead over Google’s Android in the global smartphone operating system market, according to new first-quarter data from Gartner. The data will be a boost to Apple after a separate study earlier this month found that Android has overtaken Apple in North America. In today’s study, Android and Apple were the only two OS vendors among the top five to increase market share year-on-year, Android’s share rising from 1.6 percent a year ago to 9.6 percent and Apple’s iPhone OS rising from 10.5 percent to 15.4 percent. Android moved to the number four position, displacing Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform for the first time. Symbian remained in first position but continued to lose share as its main backer – Nokia – continued to struggle in the high-end devices market. According to Gartner, smartphones accounted for 17.3 percent of all mobile handset sales in the first quarter of 2010, up from 13.6 percent in the same period in 2009.

The study found that total mobile sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the first quarter, a 17 percent increase from the same period in 2009. Smartphone sales to end users reached 54.3 million units, an increase of 48.7 percent. "In the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales to end users saw their strongest year-on-year increase since 2006," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice-president at Gartner. “This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile devices manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points. Android’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707 percent year-on-year.”

Android 2.2 and developers goodies.

Today at Google I/O we announced that Android 2.2 is right around the corner. This is our seventh platform release since we launched Android 1.0 in September 2008. We wanted to highlight five areas in particular:

Performance & speed: The new Dalvik JIT compiler in Android 2.2 delivers between a 2-5X performance improvement in CPU-bound code vs. Android 2.1 according to various benchmarks.

New enterprise capabilities: We’ve added Exchange capabilities such as account auto-discovery and calendar sync. Device policy management APIs allow developers to write applications that can control security features of the device such as the remote wipe, minimum password, lockscreen timeout etc.

Faster, more powerful browser: We have brought the V8 JavaScript engine to the Android browser as part of 2.2. This has resulted in a 2-3X improvement in JavaScript performance vs. 2.1.

Rich set of new APIs and services: New data backup APIs enable apps to participate in data backup and restore, allowing an application's last data to be restored when installed on a new or a reset device. Apps can utilize Android Cloud to Device Messaging to enable mobile alert, send to phone, and two-way push sync functionality. Developers can now declare whether their app should be installed on internal memory or an SD card. They can also let the system automatically determine the install location. On the native side, a new API now gives access to Skia bitmaps.

Additions to Android Market: Android Market provides Android Application Error Reports, a new bug reporting feature, giving developers access to crash and freeze reports from users. Developers will be able to access these reports via their account on the Android Market publisher website.

For a complete list of everything we’ve included in Android 2.2, please see the platform highlights.

Developers can now download the Android 2.2 SDK and Android NDK, Revision 4 from the Android developer site.

Tools update

We are releasing new version of the Android SDK Tools, Revision 6, Eclipse plug-in ADT 0.9.7 and Android NDK, Revision 4.

Android SDK Tools, Revision 6, Eclipse plug-in 0.9.7

These new versions include support for library projects that will help you share code and resources across several Android projects.

Android NDK, Revision 4

Workflow improvements The new NDK brings a host of workflow improvement, from compilation, to debugging. Starting with 2.2, the NDK enables debugging native code on production devices.

ARMv7 instruction set support This release enables the generation of machine code for the ARMv7-A instruction set. Benefits include higher performance, as well as full use of the hardware FPU for devices that support it.

ARM Advanced SIMD (a.k.a. NEON) instruction support The NEON instruction set extension can be used to perform scalar computations on integers and floating points. However, it is an optional CPU feature and will not be supported by all Android ARMv7-A based devices. The NDK includes a tiny library named "cpufeatures" that can be used by native code to test at runtime the features supported by the device's target CPU.

For more information, please see the releases notes for the SDK Tools, ADT, and NDK.

As I said at the beginning, Android 2.2 will be here soon, and some devices will get the update in the coming weeks. I invite application developers to download the new SDK and tools and test your applications today.

Check out the video below to learn more about Android 2.2.

Open Source Software for Automation and Other Industries

Once upon a time, a project manager ...

Project Manager: "We need to get someone to develop a Linux driver for our new machine controller. Here's a purchase order for the work."
Purchase Department: "Okay. Let me check the purchase order to make sure it follows our standard procedure: NDA to be executed, source going into company's safe ... "
Project Manager: "Nope, we're going with Open Source - source gets published to the Internet."
Purchase Department: "What? We're paying for the development but the source code goes out to the Internet? If everybody can use the source code, why are we the only ones paying for this? No way this can fly!"
The solution

Open Source is a way to get a broader community to help with development and to share in its costs. OSADL allows those members interested in developing particular Open Source software to come together in an OSADL project supported by membership fees. With the agreement of a majority of members, OSADL can delegate the development of Open Source software components. Thus, what is (financially) impossible for the individual (company), many (OSADL members) can do.Read who said such famous words

Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Grew 17 Per Cent in First Quarter 2010

RIM Made Its Debut into the Top Five Mobile Handset Manufacturers.

Worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totalled 314.7 million units in the first quarter of 2010, a 17 per cent increase from the same period in 2009, according to Gartner, Inc. Smarpthone sales to end users reached 54.3 million units, an increase of 48.7 per cent from the first quarter of 2009. Among the most successful vendors were those that controlled an integrated set of operating system (OS), hardware and services.

"In the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales to end users saw their strongest year-on-year increase since 2006," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile devices manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points. Android’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707 per cent year-on-year.

Growth in the mobile devices market was driven by double-digit growth of smartphone sales in mature markets, helped by wider product availability as well as mass market price tags. “Increasing sales of white-box products in some emerging regions, in particular India, also drove sales of mobile phones upward. We expect sales of white-box products to remain very healthy for the remainder of 2010, especially outside of China,” said Ms Milanesi.

The first quarter also saw some movement outside the top five mobile handset vendor rankings (see Table 1), Hong Kong-based manufacturer G-Five made its debut into the top 10, grabbing 1.4 per cent of market share in the first quarter of 2010. The rise of white-box manufacturers from Asia has also helped the "others" section, as a proportion of overall sales, increase its market share to 19.20 per cent in the first quarter of 2010, up 2.7 percentage points. “This is having a profound effect on the top five mobile handset manufacturers’ combined share that dropped from 73.3 in the first quarter of 2009 to 70.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2010,” said Ms Milanesi.

Source: Gartner (May 2010)

In the first quarter of 2010, Nokia's mobile phone sales to end users reached 110.1 million units, a 1.2 per cent decline in market share year-on-year. Although Nokia's midtier products sold well, Nokia lacks a high-volume driver in the high-end. “MeeGo based devices and other high-end products will not rejuvenate Nokia's premium portfolio until the end of the third quarter of 2010 at the earliest, and Nokia will continue to feel pressure on its average selling price (ASP) from vendors such as HTC, RIM and Samsung,” said Ms Milanesi. The reorganisation announced last week demonstrated that Nokia is trying to streamline the reporting process to deliver results quickly, which we believe shows its recognition of the pressure it faces from investors.

Samsung sold 64.9 million devices in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 26.3 per cent year-on-year. Samsung was one of the five vendors in the top10 vendors ranking to grow its market share, which increased by 1.5 percentage points year-on-year. Samsung saw healthy margins in the first quarter of 2010 and was also able to grow its presence in developing markets such as India and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

RIM’s mobile phone sales reached 10.6 million units in the first quarter of 2010, a 45.9 per cent increase year-on-year. RIM is making its debut into the top five worldwide mobile handset manufacturers ranking. RIM's focus this quarter was centred on its ecosystem strategy, its tightly integrated control of store, OS and device played to RIM’s strengths.

Sony Ericsson sold enough units to remain in the top five mobile handset manufacturers, but its market share declined 2.3 percentage points in the first quarter of 2010. The channel held some inventory for Sony Ericsson in the first quarter of 2010 as some new products reached the channel late into the quarter. One of Sony Ericsson's most important future differentiators is its relationship with its parent company, Sony. This partnership, combined with Sony Ericsson’s ownership of the strongest portfolio it has had since 2007, place it well to lead the trend toward increasingly connected consumer devices.

The first quarter of 2010 was Apple’s strongest quarter yet, which placed the company in the No. 7 position with a 112.2 per cent increase in mobile devices sales. “Growth came partly from new communication service providers in established markets, such as the UK, and stronger sales in new markets such as China and South Korea,” said Ms Milanesi. “The second quarter of 2010 will be a very important one for Apple. We expect that Apple will present its new iPhone in June during its Worldwide Developer Conference, which will be the first to feature the latest release of the iPhone OS that includes welcome improvements for developers and users, such as multitasking.”

In the smartphone OS market, Android and Apple were the winners in the first quarter of 2010 (see Table 2). Android moved to the No. 4 position displacing Microsoft Windows Mobile for the first time. Both Android and Apple were the only two OSs vendors among the top five to increase market share year-on-year. Symbian remained in the No. 1 position but continued to lose as Nokia remains weak in the high-end portfolio.

Smartphones accounted for 17.3 per cent of all mobile handset sales in the first quarter of 2010, up from 13.6 per cent in the same period in 2009.

As seen with the iPad and web books based on Google's Android platform, mobile OS ecosystems are developing and will move beyond smartphones to continue to deliver consumer value and a rich user experience,” said Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner.

Mobile e-mail, rich messaging and social networking will continue to drive demand for smartphones and enhanced phones that feature full qwerty hardware keyboards. “To compete in such a crowded market, manufacturers need to tightly integrate hardware, user interface, and cloud and social networking services if their solutions are to appeal to users,” said Ms Cozza. “Just adding a qwerty keyboard will not make a device fit the communication’s habits of today's various consumer segments.”

iPhone Programming for Windows

DragonFireSDK succeeds where Adobe Flash failed.

DALLAS -- Zimusoft, Inc. has created a product to build a bridge between Windows and the iPhone: DragonFireSDK.com (SDK: Software Development Kit). For the first time, Windows developers can fully code and debug iPhone Apps without ever leaving Windows.

Apple published an SDK for the iPhone, but it only runs on a Mac and it requires programmers to learn a variant of the C/C++ language called Objective-C. Of the 5 million programmers worldwide, over 80% work in Windows and do not know Objective-C. With DragonFireSDK, C/C++ programmers can develop for the iPhone using the Windows computer they already own and the language they already understand.

The DragonFireSDK product consists of a cross-platform Library and an iPhone Simulator. Windows programmers see an on-screen iPhone Simulator running their code. When the App is complete, an App Bundle is prepared that will run on the iPhone and is ready for submission to the Apple iPhone App Store. Games made in Windows with DragonFireSDK are already being shipped.

DragonFireSDK costs only $99.95. Many Windows programmers will pick it up and create a small game in a weekend. High schools and colleges are excited about filling "Introduction to Programming" classes that teach how to write a game for the iPhone. The Library of functions will allow programmers to easily create the kind of leisure games iPhone users enjoy while waiting for their coffee at Starbucks. Popular maze games like PacMan as well as side scroll games like Nintendo Mario Bros can be created using DragonFireSDK.

Clint Brock, Zimusoft's DragonFireSDK Product Champion said, "We understand that there are thousands of programmers who would enjoy entering the iPhone digital playground. We also know that they have day jobs programming in Windows and would prefer a solution that they can enjoy this weekend - not after weeks of learning Objective-C and spending thousands of dollars to buy a Mac."

Apple has been supportive of DragonFireSDK apps made in Windows. The bridge from Windows to iPhone simply enables more people to cross over. Apple rejected Adobe Flash because they failed to use one of the 3 approved languages for the iPhone: 1) Objective-C; 2) C; 3) C++. DragonFireSDK supports both C and C++. "Apple has been criticized for their restrictions, but they have not excluded us, nor have they excluded cross-platform tools such as OpenGL and OpenAudio. We love the iPhone and we are not only on the band wagon, we are behind it pushing!" [Dave Edwards, Zimusoft CEO]

The team at Zimusoft.com is comprised of specialists in creating mobile simulators, having previously created Windows Simulators of Nokia and Samsung phones. The company name, Zimusoft, is derived from the word Simulator. Edwards concluded, "We are thrilled to find such a great use for our mobile simulator technology. The interest in our Windows iPhone Simulator and software developer's kit far exceeds any previous mobile platform."

DragonFireSDK is Zimusoft's bridge between iPhone and Windows
