Xperia X10 To Get Multitouch and Android 2.1 in September?

Friday, April 16, 2010

According to mobiles.co.uk, during the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, a rep said that the X10 is due for a very "big" update come second half of 2010, around September maybe. A lot have been speculating that this is Android 2.1 and according to mobiles.co.uk's inside man, multi-touch is also on the table as it seems the limitations is not hardware based. But does this mysterious employee know more than Sony Ericsson's product manager? Then again, this could be a ploy to get more people to buy the X10 over the HTC Desire, Nexus One, or the Legend.

I know what you're thinking--September?! That's 5 months from now and by that time, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 would be overshadowed by something much more--Incredible? And if not something incredible, maybe something EVOlutionary?! But still, it's good news for current owners of the X10 but then again, if I were you, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Sliding iPhone Concept Packs a Keyboard, Looks Neat

Olivier Demangel is a 3D artist from the UK and you absolutely have to check out his work. Aside from the beautiful iPhone concept pictured below, the man also created the Nintendo 3DS, a possible follow-up to the current portable console. However, the gaming iPhone design steals the show, through its cool looks.

This futuristic iPhone features a small sliding QWERTY keyboard, plus an iPod-like scroll wheel and it still manages to keep that cool touchscreen. We have no info on the specs of this device, but in case you’re wondering, you can check out the Nintendo 3DS concept at the end of the article, since it’s pictured there, in all its splendour.

Let’s just hope that Apple, Nintendo or maybe a third party will adopt these designs…

Messenger Dog

Messenger dog is an informal messaging system for disastered cities.

Soon after a disaster happens, such as an hearthquake, family members and beloved ones could get displaced in the city and in different refugees camps, being not able either to reconnect physically due to the collapsed roads or to phone each other due to the network not working.

In those very first hours of fear and displacement, people may just want to send a message to their beloved ones only saying that they are alive and safe, hoping the same for them as well.

Messanger Dogs can help in recording those messages as video message and delivering them to the refugee camp they are assigned to.

Messanger Dogs wear a particular uniform to identify them, equipped with a device that can record messages, store geolocation of where each message was taken and the time as well. Messanger dogs are trained to sit when in front of a person, so as soon as one of them meets a person, it sits, allowing the accelerometer inside the recording device to trigger the interface software to start. In our prototype we used an IPod running Nada Mobile from Tellart to simulate the device.

The Messanger Dogs are divided into team, assigned to different refugee camp. At the end of their work, they can come back to the camp, where volunteers will download the video and make them available to the people to browse among and watch. In this way people could get to know a familiar is fine before the formal communication would be restored.

This concept was developed by me, Mary and Li during Matt Cottam GUI course at CIID.
The video for this project was developed during Timo Arnall, Jack Schulze and Matt Cottam workshop called "very Short Stories" soon after the concept and graphical interfaces development during a very intense weekend.
Special thanks for the shooting to Timo Arnall and props movements and acting Matt Cottam.

What is FISHLABS up to with smartphones in 2010?

We started the new year with a bang: Our most successful iPhone ad game, Barclaycard Waterslide Extreme, has cracked 10 million downloads, Rally Master Pro™ will be released – for free (!) – in an extra high resolution Symbian version for Sony Ericsson Satio™ and Vivaz™ in a few days, and we recently launched a new iPhone game for Volkswagen: Volkswagen Think Blue. Challenge. This iPhone promotional game we are particularly proud of, because usually promotional games are inferior to regular commercial games for reasons of budget, and the subject of fuel saving is rather uncommon in games. Nevertheless, we were able to turn all that into a high-quality, exciting game, as even the folks at toucharcade declared (a great honour!). You see, promotional games can be quite entertaining, and so you can look forward to at least two more free casual games, that will be launched by this summer.
Fresh games for iPhone, iPad & friends

Of course, this year, we aren’t just developing ad games for iPhone and iPad and revamping existing iPhone games for other smartphones; we are also working on several completely new titles. With a racing game that has music as an essential component, we are entering new territory. We can’t tell you too much, but the first playable version caused quite a sensation both in-house and with marketing partners.

Along with our iPhone and iPad developments, we also want to put out feelers towards Android this year. As with the iPhone before, we will first port our casual games, like Burning Tires™, to get a feel for the new platform. If the effort proves worth the trouble, we will definitely follow up with more titles. Beyond that, we are working on a AAA title closely together with Nokia featuring OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics for a large screen.
Reunion with Keith on iPhone, iPad and Nokia Smartphones

It’s been at least a year since we ported our most important brand to the iPhone: Galaxy on Fire™. Our 3D space shooter with open gameplay and RPG-like equipment options for spaceships is still unchallenged in the AppStore. But despite heavily pepped up graphics and crisp sound, GoF on the iPhone cannot deny its Java origins and its five-year old design. Sci-fi action fans will be glad to hear that we have been working on converting Galaxy on Fire™ 2 to the iPhone and other smartphones since October.

The sequel to the space epic has set standards in the Java field similar to Part 1 and, thanks to the even more open game design, offers significantly greater potential to be a megahit on the iPhone. So you can look forward to seeing Keith and other acquaintances from the first part once again later this year and play the Alien part for the first time in the Mission Pack in summer. And to keep the wait from being all too boring, we will keep you up-to-date with the status of the development with a regular developer’s diary.

HTC: Android Tablet, 1080p Video Recording, 5.1 Sound in the Works

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - During a press conference unveiling the HTC Smart, Desire and Legend for the South African market, local MD Quinton Leigh revealed to PhoneReport that the manufacturer is preparing a Google Android-based tablet, 1080p video recording and 5.1 surround sound for its upcoming mobile phones.

The market has clearly understood that mobile giant Samsung will always be the first to innovate when it comes to actual mobile hardware - its camera upgrades and project-equipped handsets are examples of that. HTC, not falling behind, will incorporate 1080p full HD video recording in its smartphones by next year, possibly by second quarter of 2011, said Leigh. Surround sound built by Yamaha for the handsets may come earlier than that, delivering an excellent 5.1 experience, according to the excited MD. Samsung already offers the latter technology, thanks to its in-house semiconductor company, able to develop its own chips, therefore HTC has to purchase them from Yamaha. HSPA+ speeds of up to 14.4mbps on HTC devices could be seen on the third quarter of this year.

Leigh wasn't very clear on the Google Android "tablet". He said it might not be an actual tablet, although it is clear that the company wishes to counter Apple in a market which is expected to grow to great proportions. Specifications of the devie were not made available to us, but the MD did hint that it may not reach the South African territory, owing to the high price of wireless connectivity - from this, we can assume that the "tablet" will incorporate Wi-Fi, and possibly HSPA as well.

HTC has in the fast launched UMPCs (Ultra Mobile Personal Computers), which ran on Windows XP/Vista. These were not very successful, therefore the entire market is actually moving towards tablets or smartbooks.

HTC Smart

The much-awaited HTC Smart, an affordable smartphone expected to redefine how HTC addresses the market, is said to cost half of the price of the Tattoo, which was HTC's first attempt in the lower-end of the smartphone segment.

As the Smart is quite small, it fits perfectly in one hand, and it has just enough buttons to enable comfortable usage, without overcrowding the frontal section. The user interface is excellent, well-managed so that the screen doesn't feel packed, even though it is slightly small. If HTC was looking for "smart simplicity", it has achieved that.

The phone features a 2.8" touchscreen display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with support for video recording, HSDPA connectivity, microSD memory card support, Bluetooth, FM radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, and runs HTC Sense on top of the Brew operating system. Wi-Fi and GPS had to be excluded in order to keep the price low.

HTC Smart hands-on

HTC Desire

The HTC Desire, a variant of the Google Nexus One, is quite a powerful smartphone, having a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 576MB of RAM. HTC specifically stated that the device will not have a weak battery life, even though it is more advanced than most high-end phones. It also brings a 3.7" AMOLED touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth, a 5 megapixel camera with video recording capability, a 3.5mm audio jack, GPS, and microSD memory card support.

Upon inspection, the Desire proved to be a very fast phone, opening apps and displaying transition effects without any lag. For a high-end phone, it has an appropriate number of buttons, while the on-screen keyboard could have been as good as a hardware one - all it takes is practice, of course.

HTC Desire hands-on

HTC Legend

Lastly, the HTC Legend, a device similar to the HTC Hero in form factor, is a high to mid-end smartphone. It features a 5 megapixel camera with video recording support, a 3.2" touchscreen display, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS, a 3.5mm audio jack, microSD memory card support, and is powered by a Qualcomm processor at 600MHz, with 384MB of RAM.

The handset felt heavier than the latter two, although just like the Desire, everything felt fast, and the on-screen keyboard deserved nothing less than five stars.

HTC Legend hands-on

HTC Legend live image

User Interface: HTC Sense

Both HTC Legend and HTC Desire run on Google Android 2.1, the latest version of the operating system, covered by HTC"s Sense user interface.

Sense was thoroughly showcased by HTC at the event, a well-studied user interface, much better than TouchFLO, used for the company's past Windows Phones.

The right widgets of the right size can be placed on the home screen, which is a feature of Google Android, blended with Sense. What is rather unique with Sense is the integration of social networking: friend stream brings Facebook, Twitter and Flickr updates to one of the home screens, while the photo gallery allows quick upload of images to Flickr.

Emails, weather and other widgets can also be intuitively be placed on the home screen. These won't be simple icons or preview windows, but actual useful tools that ease the access and use of the functions, be it reading emails or messages, checking the weather, etc..

A detailed review of these handsets and their software will be published in the following weeks.

Pricing for the devices will be made known soon, while the South African market release date is scheduled for the 7th of May, this year. In other world regions, the handsets are already available.

Android and Linux Discuss Code Reunion

The guardians of the Linux Kernel Archive, repository for the source code for the Linux open source operating system, turned the code for Google's Android phone out the door last year. The guardians felt they were getting too little cooperation from Google and too few patches from its engineers.

However, at the Linux Collaboration Summit, taking place today and tomorrow in San Francisco, Google has apparently broached the topic of bringing it all back home.

Both Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, and Chris DiBona, open source and public sector engineering manager for Google, reportedly believe it will be done. DiBona, however, told a reporter that he believed the restoration would be a "multi-year process."

DiBona even told ZDNet's Paula Rooney that Google was hiring two engineers just to work on the kernel.

He dismissed worries over forking and fragmentation, "noting that smart phone operating system code is not all appropriate for the operating system kernel." In fact, that seems to lie at the kernel of the fuss over the kernel, the fact that Google, he says, is shipping millions of Androids per day. The exigencies of the profit-driven corporation and the clean code values of the guardians don't seem like they will ever fit together seamlessly.

Android Market Coming To Many New Countries

About 2 weeks ago we wrote about the introduction of paid apps in the Canadian Android Market and as it now turns out, Android Market for free apps will be introduced in many other countries as well. This brings the number of countries where Android Market is available to 46, from 25 a few weeks ago. New countries in the Market are, among others, Brazil, Israel and Thailand.

Besides this expansion for free applications, support for paid apps is introduced in Australia for operator Telstra, bringing the number of countries with paid apps to 13. The top 10 most popular paid apps and top 10 most popular games doesn’t differ much from the Canadian top 10 we published recently:

Top10 AU

For more information about which countries are already supported you can have a look at appstores.info. At the Android Market support page, more information is available as well.

Ministry may seek interim relief and 2.6 GHz auction to proceed

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Radiocommunications Agency have the interim order that KPN and Vodafone had brought me. The auction of frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band can therefore continue and start Tuesday.

The judge in Rotterdam, the request of KPN and Vodafone to postpone the auction of 2.6 GHz frequencies dismissed reports KPN Tweakers.net. The court has been ruling by the content provider is not substantiated, the text of the statement follows probably until Tuesday.

The providers had filed a lawsuit to postpone the auction, because existing telecom providers by KPN and Vodafone at a disadvantage compared to newcomers. The latter group may get relatively more frequency space. ISPs also want to know what the Ministry of Economic Affairs wants to take another spectrum that is auctioned next time. Thus, there is 55MHz of spectrum in 1800 - and 2100MHz bands on board and 55MHz from the same band would later become available. The court, however, these objections are rejected.

The auction starts next Tuesday and will probably take several weeks. Providers may choose which network they use a network technology to rig the 2.6 GHz band. Presumably they choose while for LTE or WiMAX, the intended successor of the current UMTS. These techniques can be used for fast mobile Internet.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced pleased with the judge's ruling. "There is more competition and more services come on the market. This is good news for consumers."

Vodafone speaks in a written response to disappointment at the verdict: "Despite the ruling remains Vodafone considers that there are too many unknowns for the spectrum to be able to appreciate and also that the caps imposed an equivalent auction with fair opportunities in the obstacle. " KPN wants to await the reasoning of the court before the provider gives a response. The provider shall not accept the design of the auction: "KPN had in the autumn of 2009 appealed to the Ministry of Economic Affairs on the design of the auction. This procedure is still ongoing."

HTC Desire user interface demo

The Google Nexus One was given the grace of a market head start but it’s no longer standing lonely at the top. And even if it looks like a brotherly reunion, the HTC Desire is in fact a formidable rival. That’s between HTC and Google though. Users have hardly reasons to complain.

The limited availability of the Nexus One only works in the HTC Desire’s favor. The HTC Desire ships worldwide and its current street price is around 440 euro. That’s just a bit more than the Google Nexus One and it won’t be long perhaps before they’re level.

As to the differences, the HTC Desire seems to get the upper hand but it’s not just quite as capable as promised. DivX support and 720p video recording didn’t make it on time, although there’s word of including them in a future update. The HTC Desire comes with the company’s proprietary Sense UI on top of the E'clair and Flash support in the web browser. We do prefer the hardware buttons to the Nexus One’s capacitive controls but the trackpad doesn’t quite cut it. We’d take the trackball any day.

Now, the complicated family issues aside, let’s look at a real competitor. The recently unveiled I9000 Galaxy S is Samsung’s most powerful Android smartphone – and quite keen to challenge for the top spot. Featuring a breathtaking four inches of Super AMOLED display and a fast 1GHz processor, the Galaxy S also runs E'clair and offers a 5-megapixel snapper. What’s more, codec support and high-res video are all there so HTC better hurry with that upgrade.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has the older Donut (Android OS v1.6) and its price is steep. The X10 is still quite a catch though. It has a Snapdragon inside and a bigger screen too. The real edge over the Android rivals however is the 8-megapixel autofocus camera.

So, this is the latest in Android and we have no reason to be disappointed. The Desire is confidently taking charge of the HTC Android lineup. With gadgets like the Hero and the Legend behind it, this is one of the most impressive droid fleets these days. The HTC Desire has the background and the inspiration, and it has some bonus hype, courtesy of the Nexus One. Out of two identical phones, most users will of course get the one that’s more readily available.

redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA

What is it?

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we've been using since the 2.x days. Nothing new is revealed to Apple, and it's not applicable to the iPad. Don't go near it if you use yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w, or blacksn0w.

Please not that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now (that's the real reason we showed “Veency” in the 4.0 jailbreak demo video last week, instead of say MobileTerminal.app, which is broken!). This beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps (like MobileTerminal.app!) to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it's meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You'll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don't pirate Apple software.

Anyone other than developers of jailbroken apps porting their software to 4.0beta1 should still be using our previously-released redsn0ws for 3.0 through 3.1.3
What devices, platforms, and FW versions are supported?

This BETA release supports:

*
iPhone 3G only (for now)
*
Mac OSX only (for now)
*
the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That's because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you've already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.
How do I use it?

If you're a developer for jailbroken apps and you've already updated your iPhone3G to iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw, the next steps are:

1.
Make sure you've already activated your iPhone3G with iTunes and your developer UDID
2.
Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.5
3.
Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you've already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)
4.
Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
5.
When your iPhone3G comes back up, you'll notice Cydia has a blank white icon (we told you many things were broken right now!) You'll also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

Help! I should have listened and just left this for JB app devs!

If you find that you want to back down from the 4.0beta1 until it's more useable, here's how to do it.

1.
Restore to official 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Your baseband won't be downgraded, so you'll get error 1015 at the end of the restore.
2.
Use rslite or irecovery to get past error 1015. Using rslite, you'd do:

% rslite
rslite v0.2 - by the iPhone Dev Team, 2009.
--THIS IS AN UNSUPPORTED TOOL--

Connecting...
[Recovery] setenv auto-boot true
[Recovery] saveenv
[Recovery] reboot

Your baseband will still be at 05.13 from the stock 4.0beta1, but FW 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 will work fine with it. The current carrier unlocks will not.

Investment increases consumer value as demand grows for calls, e-mail, text, Web, video and music.

DENVER, CO — South suburban Denver residents, businesses and visitors are enjoying improved wireless service thanks to enhanced Verizon Wireless network coverage in the Cherry Hills area. The expanded 3G wireless network improves coverage and increases network capacity in:

* Cherry Hills Village, including E Quincy Avenue between Happy Canyon and Downing Street; University Boulevard between Sunset Drive and Cherry Hills Farm Drive; and S Holly Street between Quincy Avenue and Piedmont Drive

The increase in coverage and capacity also means the network can carry more calls, e-mails, text and picture messages in more places, and offer greater wireless access to the Web.

The company’s ongoing network investment in Colorado now totals more than $909 million. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $55 billion since it was formed – $5.5 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. The result is the nation’s largest, most reliable 3G network that powers services such as Mobile Broadband and e-mail.

Businesses of any size can tap into the power of Mobile Broadband. The service allows users to connect to the Internet wirelessly while on the go to download music over-the-air, and access e-mail or corporate data.

Small business owners interested in Mobile Broadband, and other wireless solutions, can visit http://smallbusiness.vzw.com where they will find:

* An online forum to share experiences and connect with other business owners
* Access to Small Business Specialists in each Verizon Wireless store
* Discounts and promotions to help businesses stretch their budgets
* Summaries of mobile solutions like e-mail, wireless Internet and Push to Talk service
* 24/7 tech support

Verizon Wireless tests its network and those of its competitors. The company determines if voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected.

Nationally, Verizon Wireless’ real-life test men and women drive 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1,000,000 miles annually. They drive on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and streets in high-population areas, based upon U.S. Census counts. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.

Verizon Wireless Expands Network Coverage In New York City

• Network expansion will make service faster and more reliable for Verizon Wireless customers
• Verizon Wireless continues to add new cell sites and capacity to bolster its already industry-leading 3G network
• Enhanced cell sites keep customers connected to e-mail, music & mobile Web

ORANGEBURG, NY — Verizon Wireless, provider of the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G network, announced the activation of a new cell site in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Wireless calling, text messaging and mobile Web surfing is now easier and faster for residents and visitors on the Westside of Manhattan located in the new coverage zone. The cell site will serve the area from Ninth Avenue to Tenth Avenue from 15th Street to 23rd Street.

The expanded coverage and increased data capacity enables customers in this area to enjoy clearer reception, fewer dropped calls and quicker download speeds when using their wireless devices to talk, text, e-mail, view high-quality videos and access VZ Navigator®’s turn-by-turn directions. Additionally, these network enhancements further boost Verizon Wireless’ network reliability, particularly during emergencies such as power outages and extreme weather conditions when wireless communications are needed the most. These network enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless’ aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company’s voice and data services.

“As smartphone usage continues to grow, coverage areas and data capacity are now more important than they’ve ever been in order to maintain quality in the wireless network,” said pat Devlin, regional president. “Verizon Wireless is constantly working to improve its industry-leading 3G network in order to stay ahead of the competition and prepare for the future. Even here in New York City, where our network is head and shoulders above the other carriers, we’re still making improvements to provide our customers with the best service possible.”

Nationally, Verizon Wireless’ real-life test men and women drive 100 specially-equipped vehicles nearly one million miles each year on the country’s most frequently traveled roadways to confirm that voice calls and data connections are successful on the first attempt and stay connected. Vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.

AT&T Brings 3G Mobile Broadband Network to Ames and Iowa City

Local Wireless Network Upgrade Extends Access to Advanced Products, Services and Applications.

AT&T* announced the availability of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Ames and Iowa City, opening the door to a new era of mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content for customers in the area.

The activation of 3G technology on nearly 20 cell sites across the Ames and Iowa City areas will enhance wireless coverage for residents and businesses. The 3G network has also been enhanced along major roadways, including I-35, Highways 30 and 69 in Ames, and I-80, Highways 1 and 6 in Iowa City/Coralville.

AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation’s fastest 3G network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an amazing wireless voice and data experience.

The network expansion in Ames and Iowa City is part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive investment and innovation to deliver the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Iowa wireless and wireline networks was nearly $55 million.

“These investments in smart networks are enabling the innovation of today and tomorrow that will enhance economic growth and stimulate jobs in Iowa,” said Beth Canuteson, Director, External Affairs, AT&T Iowa. “We commend the work of the Iowa state legislature and the other leaders of our state who are creating a positive economic environment that provides opportunities for companies to continue to invest aggressively across the state.”

Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to the increasing popularity of advanced smartphones and the performance of AT&T’s 3G network, the nation’s fastest.

“Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing, whether it’s for sharing video and photos with friends, watching a movie, checking the latest scores, or listening to music on a phone, netbook or other mobile devices on the go,” said Hardmon Williams, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Iowa. “With this expansion, our customers can enjoy the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience with emerging devices and tens of thousands of mobile applications.”

AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 as AT&T combines the new technology with the increased deployment of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic technology.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, delivering voice service in over 220 countries and data service in more than 190 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on 130 major cruise ships, as well as 3G services in 115 countries.

For more information about AT&T’s 3G coverage in Iowa or anywhere in the United States, consumers can visit http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer. The online tool can measure the quality of coverage based on a street address, intersection, ZIP code or even a landmark.

AT&T Offers to Have Two Trees Planted for All U-verse TV Customers who Go Paperless

AT&T and Sundance Channel Launch Another Paperless Billing Promotion that Doubles the Trees Planted for U-verse TV Customers Who Opt In To Paperless Billing.

AT&T* is giving AT&T U-verse® TV customers double vision when it comes to supporting the environment. Thanks to a new promotion with Sundance Channel — and with the help of The Arbor Day Foundation — the first 140,000 new or existing U-verse TV customers who switch to paperless billing through April 30 will have a tree planted in their honor in a national forest.

This builds on the ongoing paperless promotion launched last month, in which AT&T announced a company-wide initiative with The National Arbor Day Foundation to have a tree planted in honor of AT&T residential home phone, U-verse TV, and wireless customers who opt in to paperless billing — up to 1 million trees in 2010. The AT&T and Sundance Channel promotion means U-verse TV customers who opt in through April 30 will actually have two trees, total, planted in their honor — one generated by the AT&T promotion, and a second generated by AT&T’s partnership with the Sundance Channel.

Nokia Siemens Networks sets up industry’s first TD-LTE Open Lab

Provides smart phone and terminal testing facility to accelerate TD-LTE ecosystem.

Nokia Siemens Networks has inaugurated a TD-LTE Open Lab at its Hangzhou R&D facility. The first such lab in the industry aims to provide practical know-how that will help telecom operators and TD-LTE device manufacturers across the globe deploy commercial TD-LTE quicker. Major TD-LTE smartphone and terminal manufacturers can use the lab to test the interoperability and functionality of their devices across TD-LTE networks.

“The development of terminals and devices has always been a bottleneck in the roll-out of new mobile technology,” said Mr. Sha Yuejia, vice president of China Mobile. “We are thus more than happy to see that Nokia Siemens Networks has established a cutting-edge terminal testing environment, an initiative that we support wholeheartedly. After all, a healthy ecosystem needs efforts from all stakeholders.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Open Lab will provide an end-to-end testing environment for verifying the compatibility of terminals and devices with the company’s TD-LTE network products and solutions. The lab will also provide consultancy and testing services to device manufacturers. Nokia Siemens Networks’ TD-LTE R&D center in Hangzhou is fully integrated into the company’s global network of LTE Centers of Competence. It is an ideal location for the new Open Lab, as the company can use the R&D center’s existing competencies, resources and assets to speed deployment of TD-LTE.

“This initiative will facilitate the holistic development of TD-LTE technology,” said Wang Tong, chief technology officer of Samsung China. “We are working hard to build-up the TD-LTE ecosystem. TD-LTE Open Lab will provide us with a common testing platform to prove the interoperability of our terminals with its networks before commercial rollout.”

“We are at the forefront of driving TD-LTE deployments, as we were the first to conduct a call fully compliant with the 3GPP Release 8 (March 09 baseline) standard using commercial network hardware,” said Zhang Zhiqiang, president of the Greater China Region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “The TD-LTE Open Lab is a key cooperation initiative that will help us align our solutions with major user equipment vendors and ensure that our networks fully interoperate with their devices for the benefit of all TD-LTE operators.”

While Nokia Siemens Networks will focus on a quick ramp-up of the Open Lab by leveraging existing R&D teams and assets, it is also putting in place an expert pool of interoperability testing (IOT) professionals to ensure optimum quality standards and define a long-term strategy for the lab.

Providing a live TD-LTE experience to operators in the region, Nokia Siemens Networks also recently kicked off a nationwide TD-LTE road show in China. Beginning in Beijing, the road show will cover more than ten provinces in three months, demonstrating the most advanced TD-LTE technology and applications.
