The HTC Desire’s coming soon...

It’s the phone everyone’s talking about and it’s coming to O2 very soon – here are the tariffs it’ll be available on...

The HTC Desire is one of the most anticipated phones of the year and we’ve been working to make it available as soon as possible. Unfortunately the testing we carry out to make sure the phone’s ready for launch has taken longer than we had hoped, meaning we won’t be able to launch it at the end of April like we originally planned. Instead, we’re aiming to get it launched for mid-May and we’ll update this page as soon as we have an exact date.

In the meantime, here are the tariffs you’ll be able to buy the HTC Desire on once it’s launched. With the Desire’s big touch screen, powerful processor and combination of Android software and HTC Sense user interface, it’s perfect for browsing the web, keeping up to date with your friends or downloading any of the more than 30,000 apps available in the Android Market.

That’s why we’re launching the HTC Desire on our range of dedicated smartphone tariffs that all offer free unlimited data and Wi-Fi as standard as well as unlimited texts. Available with either an 18 or 24 month minimum term, there’s a tariff to suit every pocket.

Google acquires Labpixies

Not everyone likes to start their day with just a search box and logo (no matter how cool it is!). Many users want email, videos, news, weather, games, and other information to be at their fingertips each time they open up a browser window. We launched iGoogle in 2005 to address this need by providing a truly personalized homepage with access to any RSS feed and well over a hundred thousand gadgets.

One of the first developers to create gadgets for iGoogle was Labpixies. Over the years, we worked closely together on a variety of projects, including the launch of a number of global OpenSocial based gadgets. Recently, we decided that we could do more if we were part of the same team, and as such, we're thrilled to announce the acquisition of Labpixies.

The team will be based in our ever-growing Tel Aviv office and will anchor our iGoogle efforts across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. We are looking forward to working with Labpixies to develop great web apps and leverage their knowledge and expertise to help developers and improve the ecosystem overall.

In the meantime, have fun trying to beat me at Flood-It!

Google’s Andy Rubin on Everything Android

Andy Rubin, a vice president for engineering at Google, leads one of the search giant’s most important efforts—the development of Android, Google’s open source platform for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Android, of course, is Google’s primary weapon in its escalating battle with Apple over the smartphone market. Android currently runs on 9 percent of smartphones in the United States, according to Comscore.

It is also likely to be the company’s software choice for the emerging worlds of tablet computers and set-top boxes.

In a wide-ranging conversation on Google’s campus last week, Mr. Rubin talked about openness, support for Adobe Flash, Chrome, the upcoming Froyo release, and seemed to compare Apple to North Korea.

He predictably said that the Android platform was taking off because it was open to many manufacturers running many different architectures.

“It’s a numbers game. When you have multiple O.E.M.’s building multiple products in multiple product categories, it’s just a matter of time” before sales of Android phones exceed the sales of proprietary systems like Apple’s and R.I.M.’s, he said.

As to when the number of Android phones sold would exceed the number of BlackBerrys and iPhones sold, Mr. Rubin said, “I don’t know when its might be, but I’m confident it will happen. Open usually wins.”

I also asked him about the Apple chief executive Steve Jobs’s recent comment that “folks who want porn can buy an Android phone.”

“I don’t really have a rationale for that,” he said. “It’s a different style of interacting with the public and the media.”

Mr. Rubin also addressed many other topics — like whether consumers actually care if their mobile phone software is “open” or not. He insisted that they would, comparing closed computing platforms to totalitarian governments that deprived their citizens of choice. “When they can’t have something, people do care. Look at the way politics work. I just don’t want to live in North Korea,” he said.

When asked whether Android apps from Google might have an advantage over other companies’ apps in the Android Market, the discussion again seemed to implicitly veer toward Brand X.

“We use the same tools we expect our third-party developers to,” Mr. Rubin said. “We have an SDK we give to developers. and when we write our Gmail app, we use the same SDK. A lot of guys have private APIs. We don’t. That’s on policy and on technology. If there’s a secret API to hook into billing system we open up that billing system to third parties. If there’s a secret API to allow application multitasking, we open it up. There are no secret APIs. That is important to highlight for Android sake. Open is open and we live by our own implementations.”

He also promised that full support for Adobe’s Flash standard was coming in the next version of Android, code-named Froyo, for frozen yogurt (previous Android releases were called Cupcake, Donut and Eclair, and are represented outside Building 44 on the Google campus with giant sculptures of the desserts). Sometimes being open “means not being militant about the things consumer are actually enjoying,” he said.

Of the fear that Android could “fork” into various different versions, making it difficult for application developers to create one program for all Android devices, Mr. Rubin compared the platform with every other PC operating system.

These systems naturally evolve, causing newer applications to not be compatible with older devices. “But compatibility for us means more than it does for other people,” Mr. Rubin said. “We have to run on a screen the size of a phone and a 42-inch plasma display — and still be compatible. I think we have the world’s first moment where an app written for phone can run on TV.”

I also asked about how Google was viewing its Android and Chrome operating systems – and which was the company’s preferred software for devices like tablet computers. He said the two platforms represented two different ambitions at Google – improving access to information on mobile phones, in the case of Android, and pushing forward the open Web in the case of the Chrome operating system.

The efforts are not necessarily mutually exclusive, Mr. Rubin said. “I don’t know if there will be Chrome and Android tablets, but if a consumer walks into store and two of those tablets are my company’s choices, I’m all good.”

Mr. Rubin said he owned an iPad; he purchased one for his wife. He said that such tablets should have traction among “a certain demographic that consumes more than produces,” but that they will likely eat into laptop sales, instead of creating an additional market. “I don’t think people want to charge another device,” he said.

At the end of the hourlong chat, I joked with Mr. Rubin that his press relations colleague, who was in the room, wanted to confess that he had left a prototype Android phone at a local bar.

“I’d be happy if that happened and someone wrote about it,” Mr. Rubin said. “With openness comes less secrets.”

Nokia asks ever so nicely for return of missing prototype

A Russian website famous for for getting its mitts on re-production versions of mobile phones has stolen some of Nokia's N8 launch day thunder.

Making its debut today, the N8 is the first mobile phone anywhere built on the Symbian S3 platform - and it's very big news for Nokia.

But Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin had already obtained a prototype of the N8 and published a savage assault on his website Mobile Review, in which he accused Nokia of sabotaging its own brand (Google translation here).

Murtazin's preview picked up a lot of link traffic, if not at the insane levels that Gizmodo experienced with its recent found-in-the-bar iPhone 4 scoop.

And Nokia's response? No police raid and no firings.

Just a mild mannered riposte, entitled One of our children is missing, via the company blog, "Doug" writes: "So now that the official news is out, we’d like our prototype back. Please."

Not unnaturally, Dough points out that the software on the pre-production prototype is decidedly unfinished.

When it goes on sale this summer, we’re confident that the N8 is going stand out for its ability to create and consume media, and stay connected with social networks. We’re also confident that the products that make their way to our customers are going to be the best possible quality: Refined, tested, re-tested, evaluated, tested again, and then – once we’re all perfectly happy – shipped.

Nokia is hunting for the source of the leak to Mobile Review - which it does not mention by name, but notes that this "particular site openly flaunts its ability to acquire our property".

But, and here is where it get's really interesting, Doug writes:

However, whilst we are determined to protect our intellectual property and maintain the surprise when a shiny new gadget is introduced, we are not going to do so at the expense of the working conditions we enjoy here at Nokia. We are not the Secret Police, and we want to maintain our culture of openness. We won’t let days like yesterday alter that.

A whiff of a hint of a sub-text, possibly?

Police warrant issued for Jason Chen’s home is 100% kosher

In response to the California police raid on Gizmodo editor Jason Chen’s home, Gawker Media is arguing that the search and seizure was illegal because California law precludes a warrant being used to ascertain the name of a journalistic source.

Gizmodo’s interpretation of the law, however, entirely misses the point. The impetus for the warrant appears to be rooted in Gizmodo’s commission of a felony, namely the purchase of an iPhone they had reason to believe was stolen property.

Shield laws in the US were designed to protect sources, but by entering into a contract with said source (5 grand in exchange for the iPhone), Gizmodo was no longer just the recipient of information, but an active participant in the commission of a felony - hence the warrant.

Despite Giz’s arguments to the contrary, the warrant is 100% kosher.

Intel's latest Classmate: Who needs an iPad?

In addition to improved hardware, the availability of Windows 7 makes a real difference in the performance of the new Classmates. Boot up is quick, applications are generally snappy, and multitasking is certainly tolerable. Windows 7 also has native support for touch, making the tablet interface even more appealing.

So is this actually an iPad killer as I called it above? Watch the brief video review below to find out why I think most educational settings can benefit from one of these new Classmates at least as much, if not considerably more, than an iPad.

So, do we have an iPad killer on our hands? At least in education, the Classmate’s competitive price (final pricing hasn’t been released yet, but should be comparable to the $499 of the previous generation), physical keyboard, full-blown OS (as opposed to a phone OS that relies on Apps), a touch screen/stylus combination that feels remarkably like writing on paper, built-in webcam, and expandable components all make the iPad hard to justify. There are plenty of use cases to which the iPad is well suited, even in schools. However, my money is on the new and drastically improved Classmates for most situations.

Wind River is the Signature Sponsor of the Multicore Expo Pavilion at this year's Embedded Systems Conference. Multicore in embedded has been a topic of interest for years. We've all heard that it is the future and that it is complex. This year we'll demonstrate that not only is Wind River doing multicore, we have the most complete multicore software solution in the industry.

Visit Our Booth
Wind River's industry-leading solution for multicore software includes fully integrated technologies and tools, ranging from hardware virtualization to VxWorks, Wind River Linux to the multicore-ready Wind River Workbench On-Chip Debugging as well as Wind River Hypervisor. In the Multicore Expo Zone, we'll demonstrate these solutions in symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) configurations on Freescale's P2020 processor, Kontron's NanoExpress board for Intel Atom, and a virtualized Freescale P4080 using Simics, the only virtual platform technology that simulates the Freescale QorIQ product line, including P2020, P4040, and P4080.

Software programmers, overall system architects, and managers interested in consolidation or doing more with less in any embedded application should visit the Wind River booth. We won't deny the complexity or risk inherent in multicore, but we will demonstrate a broad suite of solutions to reduce risk and increase time-to-market.

MMC Acquires BGR.com, One of the Top Mobile & Gadget Sites in the World

Boy Genius Report and Jonathan Geller join MMC, Jay Penske's growing digital media and publishing network.

LOS ANGELES -- Mail.com Media Corporation, (MMC), the digital media company that owns and operates the Mail.com portal and email service as well as a growing portfolio of lifestyle brands including, Deadline.com, HollywoodLife.com, Movieline.com and OnCars.com, announced today its acquisition of BGR.com, one of the top mobile/gadget sites in the world. MMC also begins a long-term, multi-year partnership with Jonathan Geller, the highly respected founder known as Boy Genius from Boy Genius Report.

Launched in October 2006, BGR.com has grown quickly to become one of the top three sites in the mobile category. Demonstrating its appeal to a broad audience that extends beyond mobile, Technorati also lists BGR.com as one of the Top 50 most influential content destinations in the world, across all categories.

Like many kids with a fascination for technology and gadgets, Geller owned his first cell phone from the young age of 10 years-old. At 17, he began writing for Engadget. Not long afterwards, he started BGR as a passion project that quickly transitioned into the "go-to" site for breaking news for mobile devices and gadgets.

Now reaching over 1 Million users per month, BGR.com is the leading source for breaking news and analysis on products in-market as well as prior to launch. The site has also broken the news first on almost every new BlackBerry handset. In 2006, BGR.com was the first to report on AT&T's second half product launches before the news broke in mainstream media. Over the last four years, BGR.com has been the first to break news and provide exclusive content about many of the most significant product launches--months before the release and formal announcement.

Commenting on the move to MMC, Geller said, "I'm excited to be able to partner with Jay Penske and MMC on the BGR property. I look forward to continuing to grow BGR globally with the support of MMC's talented team and extended network. Our new platform will allow us to deliver the same high quality exclusive breaking news that we're known for, but to an even larger audience. I'm also excited to have the opportunity to expand BGR beyond just the mobile category to reach a new core of ferociously dedicated readers".

The impact of the expansion cannot be underestimated. RIM's stock price increased by over 30% immediately after BGR.com broke the news of their new devices. Motorola's stock price grew by 8% following BGR.com's review of the DROID. Testament to the fact that the immediacy with which new media sites like BGR.com and Deadline.com, that break news and report on major events first, does in fact, move the needle in the financial sector.

"We're thrilled to announce our acquisition of BGR, and partnership with Jonathan. Very much in the mold of Nikki Finke of Deadline.com, Jonathan has singlehandedly built an influential site with original content that appeals to an extremely engaged and loyal following in one of the largest and most exciting categories online--and he's done it all before his 23rd birthday," said Jay Penske, the founder, Chairman and CEO of MMC. "I believe MMC is a perfect fit for Geller and BGR.com--because we provide the most original and conversational content on the web, and have the skill-set, infrastructure and reach to accelerate the scale of the BGR brand."

About BGR.com

BGR, or Boy Genius Report as it was formally known, was founded by Internet phenomenon and journalist Boy Genius (Jonathan Geller). Starting off writing for Engadget and Engadget Mobile, the then anonymous blogger quickly gained a massive online following by constantly breaking stories in the mobile gadget space. With the rise in popularity of Boy Genius' columns, a formal website became a necessity. Visit the BoyGenius at www.BGR.com & Follow BGR at http://twitter.com/boygeniusreport

About Mail.com Media Corporation (MMC)

MMC is a leading digital media company founded by CEO Jay Penske in 2004. The company owns and operates Mail.com, a global multi-media publishing platform. In addition, MMC owns a unique portfolio of lifestyle brands that provide the web's best original content in categories including entertainment, automotive, breaking news, mobile, tech/gadget, media, finance, health, beauty, style and sports. Verizon Enhances FiOS TV With YouTube and Internet Radio

Verizon Further Redefines Home Entertainment by Expanding Internet Content on TV and Making Media Manager Available to All FiOS TV HD Customers.

NEW YORK -- Verizon is taking the next step in redefining the way people watch TV by adding YouTube to its innovative FiOS TV Internet Video capabilities. Qualified customers can now simply use their remote controls to search for and enjoy any YouTube video -- right on their TV screens. Verizon is also introducing Internet Radio, for FiOS TV subscribers, providing access to hundreds of stations nationwide and the ability to stream music from the PC to the TV.

Verizon's Internet Radio and Internet Videos services are both accessible via Media Manager, which already allows subscribers to search and view on their TVs user-generated content from online video-sharing sites blip.tv, Dailymotion and Veoh. In addition, Verizon has expanded the Media Manager service, making it available to all FiOS TV HD customers. Previously, it was available only to DVR customers. The availability of YouTube, the world's most popular online video community, will add thousands more daily videos to the service.

(For screen shots and video, visit http://verizon.mediaseed.tv/Story.aspx?story=37370.)

"Adding YouTube and Internet Radio to FiOS TV further expands our customers' digital home-entertainment world by giving them access to an unprecedented amount of online content on the biggest screen in their home – their TV," said Shawn Strickland, vice president of consumer strategy for Verizon. "When customers connect their homes to our all-fiber network, their TV and Internet worlds seamlessly come together to create experiences cable can't deliver. We are working with some of the most popular companies on the Web to create a high-quality, engaging Internet-to-TV experience that will only grow richer with time."

Internet Radio, Internet Videos and all other FiOS TV features can be controlled via Mobile Remote, which Verizon introduced in February. Customers who have a Droid by Motorola or HTC Imagio mobile phone can use those devices as a television remote control. The mobile remote has virtually the same functionality as the standard FiOS remote, plus additional features including instantly transferring photos from the handset to the TV screen.

According to Steven Hawley, principal analyst and consultant of the industry research firm tvstrategies, these latest additions will markedly increase the value of FiOS TV to its customers and move FiOS TV further ahead of competing cable TV products.

"While other providers see the Internet as something of a threat, Verizon has embraced it in order to deliver the kind of socially-enabled personal media experience that so many of today's consumers want to see, and have been asking to have on their TV," said Hawley. "Rather than blurring the line between TV and the Internet, Verizon has moved the line to embrace them both, and has raised the bar against its competition."

Setup Is Easy

To watch YouTube on FiOS TV, customers need a FiOS TV DVR or high-definition set-top box and Verizon's Media Manager software – accessible for Window-based PCs. Users visit http://www.verizon.com/MediaManager to download and install free Media Manager software on their PC. They then access the service by selecting the "Media Manager" option on the FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide menu or through the Widget carousel. Subscribers already using Media Manager simply click on the upgrade prompt to receive the free software update, which will be automatically added to their service by Verizon.

Users can search YouTube and other available video-sharing sites individually, or all sites at once, using key words or by selecting "Most Watched" and "Top Rated" categories; view thumbnail screen grabs of videos that appear in search results and bookmark favorite videos – among other features. Consumers also have the option to watch videos in full-screen mode. Using the FiOS TV remote control, customers can log onto their YouTube account and view their favorite or self-uploaded videos stored with their online account.

In addition to the video-sharing features, Media Manager for PC includes Photo Manager and Music Manager features that help customers organize, manage and enjoy multimedia both on the PC and on TV. The service also includes a library of all personal videos, Internet videos from select websites, photos and music stored on a PC.

FiOS provides next-generation interactive services including an advanced interactive media guide; social-networking, news and entertainment widgets; remote DVR management via broadband or cell phone; multi-room DVR; Internet videos on TV; streaming of personal videos, photos and music from home computers to the TV; and many others.

For more information on FiOS TV, consumers can visit www.verizon.com/fiostv or call their local Verizon sales office or 888-438-3467. News Reflects Blockbuster's 28-Day Availability Advantage on Certain New Releases and Allows Customers to Buy or Rent Movies While They are Still New.

DALLAS -- Blockbuster Inc. ( BBI, BBI.B) announced availability of the hit movie, It's Complicated, from Blockbuster in stores, by mail, or digitally, a full four weeks before it will be available through some competitors. Blockbuster's early advantage reflects its ongoing agreement with Universal Studios to provide customers with the opportunity to rent hit movies the day they are released. Blockbuster also has early availability of other box office hits like Sherlock Holmes and the highest grossing film of all-time, Avatar, as well as other upcoming new releases such as Tooth Fairy, Valentine's Day, and Invictus.

"Blockbuster is thrilled to give our customers immediate access to It's Complicated on April 27, 2010 and truly deliver the multichannel options that only we can provide through BLOCKBUSTER® Stores, BLOCKBUSTER® By Mail, as well as digitally through BLOCKBUSTER On Demand®. Providing a four-week advance of new releases for our customers reflects Blockbuster's strategy to be the leading multichannel provider for movies and is possible because of our long-standing business relationships with the major studios," said James W. Keyes, chairman and chief executive officer, Blockbuster Inc.

It's Complicated is a romantic comedy directed by Nancy Meyers starring Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin, about a divorced couple reigniting their relationship. The movie garnered 2009 Golden Globe® Award nominations for best actress – motion picture, musical or comedy, best motion picture – musical or comedy, and best screenplay – motion picture. The movie was a hit at the box offices, with more than $112 million in ticket sales.

"Our customers can make plans now for at-home screenings for It's Complicated and other hit titles. Customers can expect to see all types of innovations from Blockbuster as the leading multi-channel provider of entertainment including the immediate availability of new movies from the major studios, the addition of BLOCKBUSTER On Demand® for more than 60 models of Samsung Blu-ray Players, HDTVs, and Blu-ray Home Theater Systems, and the addition of BLOCKBUSTER On Demand for smartphones launched recently on T-Mobile's HTC HD2," said Keyes.

Blockbuster is the only multichannel provider that has every hot new movie on the day of its release. For example, customers can rent a movie like Avatar through the BLOCKBUSTER By Mail service, return it to a BLOCKBUSTER store after watching, and exchange the movie for It's Complicated for more home entertainment. In addition, customers can access movies through BLOCKBUSTER Direct Access, a new service that gives customers in-store access to the more than 95,000 titles carried in Blockbuster's distribution centers. Cellcrypt Launches Secure Mobile-to-Office Voice Calling

Protects business executives traveling to regions with high risk of interception.

PALO ALTO, Calif, -- Cellcrypt (www.cellcrypt.com), the leading provider of secure mobile voice calling, launched Cellcrypt Enterprise Gateway™ which enables business executives to securely call office desk phones from their cellphone. The solution is aimed at senior executives traveling to hostile countries where phone interception is widespread.

In addition, mobile executives can securely access standard office telephony features – such as voicemail, conference calls and calling out to the public telephone network – allowing them to seamlessly continue their normal business routine when abroad assured that confidential corporate and personal information is kept private.

Cellcrypt Enterprise Gateway™ is an enterprise software application that interfaces with office phone systems (Public Branch Exchanges (PBXs)) and provides encrypted voice calling to BlackBerry® and Nokia mobile phones running Cellcrypt Mobile™ software. It also passes commands to and from PBXs via keypad tones (DTMF) and interactive commands (IVR) to enable secure remote access to existing PBX telephony features such as conference calling.

Executives increasingly recognize the risk of call interception by foreign states, competitors, journalists and kidnappers, especially when traveling abroad. As recently as April 2010, an unauthorized spy centre was discovered in Latin America containing sophisticated cellular interception equipment used for spying on businesses, politicians and journalists. This is the latest example of illegal phone interception whose breadth and depth is only recently coming to the public stage. A 2005 report to U.S. Congress showed that far from being restricted to a few rogue nations, state sponsored interception is widespread, stating, for example, that 108 countries are actively engaged in collection efforts against U.S. technology assets.

Another reason for business travelers to secure cell phone calls when abroad is to protect personal information from kidnappers in high-risk regions, such as South America. In 2009, an estimated 9,000 kidnappings took place in Venezuela alone*.

"The issue of phone interception is often thought to be restricted to government agencies but it has recently become clear that the equipment and software required is now available to the general public," said Dr. Larry Ponemon, Chairman & Founder, Ponemon Institute. "The widespread availability of both the GSM encryption codebook and a complete base station software stack has brought mobile interception within reach of any graduate IT student with $2,000 of readily available equipment, substantially increasing the scale of the threat to the enterprise."

Cellcrypt provides encrypted voice calls on mobile phones such as BlackBerry® and Nokia smartphones delivering government-grade security in an easy-to-use application that makes highly secure calling as easy as making a normal phone call. Utilizing the IP data channel it supports all major wireless networks including 2G (GPRS/ EDGE), 3G (HSPA, CDMA/EV-DO), Wi-Fi® and satellite. Cellcrypt's encryption technology is compliant to FIPS 140-2 security standard, approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

"As business is increasingly conducted over mobile phones and on a global scale, it is a corporate responsibility to both the individual and the organization to protect private information," said Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO at Cellcrypt. "With the threat growing at an alarming rate, organizations need to adequately protect all types of calls ranging from board of director conference calls through to itinerary discussions with personal assistants. Cellcrypt Enterprise Gateway allows important office communications to continue normally even when key executives are out of the office or travelling abroad."
