Marvell Shows a New Android Tablet Design

I’m spending the day at the Future of Publishing Summit in New York City, a conference on the digital transformation of books, magazines, and newspapers. The room is packed with execs from the New York publishing industry, plus a few Silicon Valley types. Among the latter are the folks from chipmaker Marvell, who are showing off some prototype devices based on the company’s low-cost, power-efficient Armada processors.

The newest of these is a reference design for a 10.1″ Android-based color tablet that Marvell just finished putting together. Here it is:

As a reference design, this (rather chunky) tablet is mostly about technological guts rather than industrial design: I’d expect the companies who build devices based on it to make them sleeker and sexier.

Marvell says that it expects tablets based on this design to go on sale by the end of this year. It’s not talking about pricetags yet, but with the iPad starting at $499, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the starting price for tablets from other companies will be substantially lower. Manufacturers should certainly be able to sell an Armada-based tablet running the free Android OS for less than a “Slate PC” running full-blown Windows 7.

Marvell’s version runs Android in a form that looks pretty much like the Android on phones such as the Nexus One and Droid, only on a bigger, higher-resolution display. Assuming that tablets are here to stay, I hope that Google–or someone–builds an Android interface that was designed with big touchscreens in mind. Despite the theory that the iPad is merely a big iPhone, the most interesting thing about it is that Apple went to the trouble of designing a new interface tailored to its needs. I don’t think tablets running a stock copy of Windows 7 or Android are going to be anywhere near as interesting as ones that rethink the experience for a new class of gizmo.

United Kingdom, France, India Among Cheapest for Mobile Broadband

Where are the best deals for mobile broadband? Comparing mobile data pricing in a number of countries, ABI Research found that the UK, France and India have among the world's lowest prices for mobile broadband plans. In India for example, where 3G mobile broadband services launched in the middle of 2009, an unlimited download plan costs just over US$17 per month.

“ABI Research expects emerging markets with low Internet penetration to price mobile broadband aggressively to drive usage,” says ABI Research analyst Bhavya Khanna. “However, in developed markets the widespread use of data dongles has created strains on mobile networks; and one could see data plans change to throttle data consumption.”

Operators in some countries are already using this approach, limiting data to 5 GB or even as low as 3 GB per month, even for their most expensive plans.

Vice President of Forecasting Jake Saunders, adds, “Another consumer concern is confusing overage charges for data plans: consumers often do not know how many megabytes of data they are downloading. Once again, there is room for innovation here from operators by simplifying overage costs and educating consumers to encourage uptake of such services. For example, operators in Singapore have a fixed “cap” on overage costs per month; ensuring that users do not get ‘bill-shock’.”

Edgecore Networks Launches a Multi-Access Business Gateway Delivering a Converged Gateway, Security and Controller Platform to SMBs and Enterprises

Edgecore Networks' Wireless Multi-Access Business Gateway (MBG) with Dual WAN Securely Connects Wired and Wireless Clients for Secure Network Ecosystems.

IRVINE, Calif. -- Edgecore Networks, a joint venture between LG-Nortel and Accton Technology, announced that it is re-entering the wireless networking industry with the launch of its family of Edgecore Wireless Multi-Access Business Gateways (MBG) featuring combined network gateways and wireless controllers. The Edgecore Wireless MBG (G4420-22 and G4430-24) combines both a network gateway and wireless controller to provide a robust high-performance wireless network infrastructure that is secure, cost-effective and easy-to-manage. The Edgecore Wireless MBG will be demonstrated next week at Interop 2010 in Las Vegas at Edgecore's booth (#2313).

The scalable Edgecore Wireless MBG solutions, which support roaming for voice applications including wireless phones in Edgecore's upcoming portfolio of unified communications solutions, are designed to provide secure, high-performance wireless network infrastructures for companies ranging in size from small businesses to enterprises with more than 500 users. The Edgecore Wireless MBG supports from 50 to 150 wireless access points, including Edgecore's family of enterprise- and business-class 802.11n access points, to extend wireless coverage and enable seamless layer 2/3 roaming to deliver anytime-anywhere access to business-critical applications.

The Edgecore Wireless MBG solutions combine the functions of both a network gateway and wireless controller into a single solution, reducing hardware costs and enabling IT administrators to centrally manage all functions of the controller and gateway in the main office and regional remote offices through a single intuitive interface to drastically reduce deployment and maintenance efforts. The Edgecore gateway/controller employs user authentication and enforces per-user policies to provide access control for a secure enterprise network.

"Our new wireless solution rounds out our overall product solution offering," said Mike Boissiere, VP of Enterprise Data Sales at Edgecore. "Some have asked why we would want to release a new solution when there are so many wireless players already in the market. We've created a solution that was designed by and created for our partners. Unlike most competing WiFi vendors that cannot provide a full infrastructure offering, Edgecore will deliver to its partners the ability to install wired or wireless infrastructures into any environment. For example, we now deliver performance wired and wireless Ethernet solutions, VDSL2 (which includes wireless), Unified Communication, NMS and UDM Software to manage the infrastructures, and a service platform for increased partner margins. It's not just the technology, but our partners we're concerned about supporting."

"The convergence of various data and voice applications into the network infrastructure is driving the demand for a wireless infrastructure that delivers a critical combination of performance, security and reliability, while at the same time being affordable and easy-to-manage," explained Keith Alexis, general manager at Edgecore. "Our new family of gateway/controller solutions enables businesses of all sizes, from SMBs to enterprises to deploy cutting-edge data and voice solutions over a wireless infrastructure that delivers on every one of those points. By combining the functions of both a gateway and a controller into a single solution, we've enabled companies to cut hardware costs and reduce network deployment and management time significantly."

About the Edgecore Wireless Multi-Access Business Gateway

The Edgecore Wireless MBGs provide a robust set of features and functions making them ideal wireless network infrastructure solutions for SMBs and enterprises. To ensure maximum system reliability, the Wireless MBGs support WAN failover to ensure network availability, load balancing to optimize network performance, advanced roaming to ensure seamless mobility across subnets, and VoWLAN Quality of Service to deliver true voice quality over wireless.

Access control can be enforced on a per-user and per-user group basis including controls for firewalls, bandwidth limitations and scheduling. Client management can be controlled via multiple user groups and multiple service zones. Management of access points is centralized giving administrators the ability to configure, control and manage multiple types of access points.

Offering a host of security capabilities, the Wireless MBG can authenticate users based upon a built-in local/on-demand database or by accessing an external authentication database. The system supports local VPN, remote VPN and site-to-site VPN, and provides additional security through WPA, rogue AP detection, wireless intrusion detection and prevention.

Now similar models only begin to appear at the market, but they thus far sufficiently expensive. Nokia promises to let out [kamerafon] with this function during the next year. It is completely probable that the discussion deals with [smartfone] Of nokia N8 from 12-[Mp] by camera, which now is prepared for the release.

Android 2.2 is coming. What features do you want?

The majority of Android phones are still running an outdated firmware, but that hasn’t slowed Google from advancing their mobile operating system. Everyone knows the next version of Android (codenamed Froyo) is on the way and the rumors (1, 2) are beginning to pick up that the Nexus One will receive it soon.

Based on the data from our analytics reports it appears Google has already begun testing on their next firmware – Android 2.2. Google engineers have routinely given codenames to future builds of Android (Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.), but they don’t receive a point release till they are finalized and nearing distribution.

Android 2.2 started showing up early this month.

We have shared this reporting data before and people are always quick to point out that it can be easily faked, but I have spoke with additional sources familiar with the matter who confirmed Android 2.2 is currently being tested.

The feature set for Android 2.2 was frozen long ago, but it remains mostly unknown. Google decided last year that they would no longer publish public roadmaps for future versions of Android. Based on the information we can gather, it appears Android 2.2 will mainly focus on performance enhancements.

Some of the rumored features for Android 2.2 include:

* JIT compiler
* Free additional RAM
* OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
* Flash 10.1 support
* Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
* Activation of Color Trackball
* Enable FM radio

Some of these features are plausible and others we have no clue.

The JIT compiler has already been confirmed by Google and we expect to find out new details during Google I/O. Android engineers will be leading a discussion that informs devs how to test and tune their apps to work with the new compiler.

Additional free RAM should come thanks to the new Linux kernel being used in Froyo. Google is moving from 2.6.29 to the newer 2.6.32 which makes it possible to address the extra RAM. This has already been done in custom ROMs like CyanogenMod so expect this feature for sure.

I’m no expert on OpenGL, but it has long been rumored that Froyo (or a future build) will add new APIs to the Android NDK which will let Java devs have full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.

Flash 10.1 is coming in the first half of the year. It is entirely possible it could be tied to a future Android firmware and be included with an OTA update.

We have already addressed the HTC touch sensor issues. It sounds like a future software update could be used to clean this up a little.

Multicolor trackball notifications are definitely coming. Android hackers like ChainsDD have already unlocked this feature for users of custom ROMs. Google advertised the multicolor trackball during its launch of the Nexus One, but the feature was cut from the final Android 2.1 build.

When it comes to the FM radio, I have no idea. Other HTC phones on a similar Snapdragon platform (Desire and Incredible) include the FM radio so it’s not out of the question that the N1 has it too.

I spoke with Google’s Eric Tseng during CES and he told me there were many secrets left in the Nexus One that we would discover later.
When is it Android 2.2 coming out?

Circle May 19th on your calendar. This is the opening day of Google I/O and I’m anticipating the release of Android 2.2 (and maybe the Flash 10.1 beta) will be tied to this event. Google has provided every developer attending the event a free Droid or Nexus One, so it is possible to see a simultaneous release on both devices.

I’m really curious how first generation devices are going to play with this release. We are expecting most phones to receive Android 2.1 this month, so it will be interesting to see how Froyo fits in. Some of the Android engineers have been talking about Froyo on the Google boards and it is unclear if the HTC Dream and Magic will be able to support it since they only have 192 MB of RAM.

Android doesn't play nice (yet) with 32-gigabyte microSD cards

If you were thinking about shelling out some serious jing (translation: spending a lot of money) on one of those new 32GB microSD cards, you might want to hold off for a little bit. Google confirmed to CNET that Android can't actually format a card that big, which could lead to some trouble. The good news is that a fix is on the way and "will be part of our next over-the-air update." Google didn't say when that might be. [CNET]

Update: Yes, folks, let there be no confusion: You in fact can use a 32GB card. Never said you couldn't. You just can't format it. It's not a huge deal, but it's something that needs to be fixed.

ZoneScreen: Use HTC HD2 as secondary screen

Video of me using my HD2 as a secondary screen on Windows XP. PS: I'm not the developer of the software, just a user ;)

More info @ www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm

Installation steps:
1. Make sure you're running Windows XP, I couldn't get this to work on Windows 7 :S
2. Connect your device via USB using Active Sync, this gives the best performance (WiFi & Bluetooth should work though)
2. Go to the website and download the ZIP for Windows Mobile & MSI installer for Windows XP
3. Install ZoneScreen on PC, start the wizard.
4. Select "Run as server" in PC wizard
5. Select "Display 2" and set resolution (in my case I had to add a new resolution, using the Options menu in the wizard; 32 bits, 480 width, 800 height)
Use default TCP port
6. Leave frames per second as is, tweak later. My HD2 works @ 32 fps.
7. Click start in wizard, minimize window to taskbar
8. Extract downloaded ZIP to Mobile device, run zserver.exe
9. Select "Run as client"
10. Use default TCP port, enter host computer name (use Winbutton + Pause on PC, go to second tab to find the computername)
11. Click next
12. Enjoy!

Microsoft in talks to buy mobile ad network

Microsoft is close to finalising a deal to buy US mobile advertising network Millennial Media say industry insiders, a strategy that mirrors recent moves by arch rivals Apple and Google. According to sources at Business Insider, Microsoft has been negotiating with Millennial for the last two months and the companies have agreed on basic terms. The deal has been a long-standing rumour in the mobile advertising industry and follows Google’s US$750 million acquisition of AdMob last year – a deal still being looked at by US anti-trust regulators – and Apple’s US$275 million purchase of Quattro Wireless in January. Such deals have been made to capitalise on the fast-growing market for delivering advertising over smartphone platforms. According to Nielsen, Millennial reaches more than 80 percent of US mobile Internet users.

Despite the rumours of an impending deal, experts are sceptical whether Microsoft needs to acquire Millennial Media to compete in the mobile ads space. Business Insider notes that the software giant already has mobile ad products in-house, including some via its acquisition of mobile ad firm ScreenTonic in 2007. It also pointed to Millennial’s likely high price tag – estimated at over US$500 million – suggesting that even cash-rich Microsoft may decide it is money best spent elsewhere. However, the report notes that a deal would be useful in expanding Microsoft’s mobile ad business beyond the deals it strikes with operators such as Verizon Wireless to use its Bing search engine. “Acquiring Millennial could quickly give Microsoft broader reach across more publishers and in mobile apps on the iPhone, Android, and other platforms,” the report said.

Nokia 6303i classic review: Retro chic

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Nokia 6303i. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and their final impression.

Key features:

* Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
* 2.2" 16M-color QVGA display with excellent sunlight legibility
* 3 megapixel camera, fixed-focus and LED flash
* QVGA video recording at 8fps
* Refreshed S40 user interface, 6th edition
* Stereo FM radio with RDS
* Bluetooth (with A2DP) and microUSB port
* microSD card slot (16 GB supported, 2GB included)
* Standard 3.5mm audio jack
* Rich preinstalled application package
* Ovi Maps, Store, Contacts and Share
* Solid metal casing, nice oval shapes
* Web browser is WebKit-based and plays YouTube video
* Respectable BL-5CT battery (Li-Ion 1050 mAh)

Main disadvantages:

* No 3G
* Memory card slot under the back cover
* Below par camera image quality
* No smart dialing
* No multi-tasking of any sort
* No office document viewer

Now, we’re at a place we’ve been before. Some things have changed but essentially it’s the same experience. We’re pleased with the refreshed UI, but that’s pretty much it for the updates.

The price is the attention grabber for the Nokia 6303i classic – given its metal build. The 6303i is very good at what it does but S40 UI has inherent limitations which you may need to consider. They are unlikely deal breakers though – at this price point and for the intended target audience.

But before you run off to the store, here are several alternatives you should consider.

The Nokia 6303 classic is an obvious option – it’s got an auto-focus camera and VGA video recording @15fps. The smaller microSD card and the older UI aside, the 6303 classic has the same features as the 6303i.

Or you could go with the newer series that succeeded the classic line. The Nokia C5 is a bit pricier, but puts GPS and Symbian in an equally compact package.

You could of course go for a phone from a couple of years ago. The kind that used to be top-of-the-line but now cost and do more or less the same as the 6303i classic.

The Samsung U800 Soul b (if you can still find it in stores) offers some improved UI features such as Smart dialing and an office document viewer plus it has a 3 megapixel auto focus camera, 3G and a similar all-metal design.

Touchphones have gotten really cheap too, so you can get one for about the same amount of cash. The LG KP500 Cookie, LG GD510, the Samsung S5230 Star and even the Nokia 5230 fall squarely into this category.

Even though a bit overpriced at the moment of writing, we guess Nokia 6303i still has its market segment – it’s exactly what many people are looking for. It won’t make you feel guilty about spending a pile of cash on a gadget, but it’s not a cheap-looking compromise either.

BLUETOOTH CORE SPECIFICATION VERSION 4.0 READY TO ROLL

New Specification Extends Range of Bluetooth Technology, Enables m-Health, Sports and Fitness, Security and Home Entertainment Wireless Markets.

KIRKLAND, WA – Today from its annual All Hands Meeting in Seattle, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) unveiled more information about its forthcoming Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, with the hallmark feature of low energy technology. Bluetooth v4.0, expected to be brought to market by the end of Q2, will feature a powerful low energy mode designed to enable expansion of the technology in m-health, sports and fitness, security and home entertainment scenarios where button-cell battery devices proliferate.

“Bluetooth v4.0 throws open the doors to a host of new markets for Bluetooth manufacturers and products such as watches, remote controls, and a variety of medical and in-home sensors. Many of these products run on button-cell batteries that must last for years versus hours and will also benefit from the longer range enabled by this new version of the Bluetooth specification,“ said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG.

Bluetooth v4.0 is like three specifications in one – Classic Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth low energy technology, and Bluetooth high speed technology– all which can be combined or used separately in different devices according to their functionality. For example, sensors like those in pedometers and glucose monitors will run only low energy technology, thus saving power, cost and space within the device. Watches will take advantage of both low energy technology while collecting data from fitness sensors on the body as well as Classic Bluetooth technology when sending that information to a PC, or separately displaying caller ID information when wirelessly connected to a mobile phone. Mobile phones and PCs, which support the widest range of uses, will utilize the full package with Classic, low energy and high speed technology running side by side.

As with previous versions of the specification, the range of the Bluetooth v4.0 radio may be optimized according to application. The majority of Bluetooth devices on the market today include the basic 30 foot, or 10 meter, range of the Classic Bluetooth radio, but there is no limit imposed by the Specification. With Bluetooth v4.0, manufacturers may choose to optimize range to 200 feet and beyond, particularly for in-home sensor applications where longer range is a necessity.

Bluetooth v4.0 was recently named one of the “10 Mobile Technologies to Watch in 2010 and 2011” by Gartner, Inc. Technologies chosen for the list were selected on their potential to evolve and impact short-term mobile strategies and policies. Specifically, Bluetooth v4.0 is cited to have significant impact on the fitness, healthcare and environmental control industries.

Availability
The specification for Bluetooth v4.0 with the hallmark feature of low energy technology was first introduced in December 2009. Samples of sensors utilizing this specification are available from some silicon manufacturers today. Integration of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology within the Bluetooth specification will be completed before June 30, 2010. Upon completion, mobile phone and PC manufacturers may enhance their Bluetooth product offerings with support for Bluetooth low energy wireless technology. End-user devices with Bluetooth v4.0 are expected to reach the market in late 2010 or early 2011.

About Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to evolve, building on its inherent strengths – small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. This evolution now provides manufacturers and consumers with three options for connecting wirelessly – Classic Bluetooth technology for use in a wide range of consumer electronics; Bluetooth high speed technology for the transfer of video, music and photos between phones, cameras, camcorders, PCs and TVs; and Bluetooth low energy technology for low power sensor devices and new web services within the healthcare, fitness, security, home entertainment, automotive and automation industries. More than eight new Bluetooth enabled products are qualified every working day and more than 19 million Bluetooth units are shipping per week. There are nearly three billion Bluetooth devices in the marketplace and that number climbs daily, making it the only proven wireless choice for developers, product manufacturers, and consumers worldwide.
