Sony Ericsson launches 'ambassador' programme

Manufacturer starts new training scheme.
Sony Ericsson has launched a new retail incentive scheme, called the ambassador programme.

To kick off the programme, the manufacturer has been touring the country, visiting key locations to raise retail staffers awareness of its products.

The Insider on Tour initiative started at the beginning of April and has seen a Sony Ericsson branded bus visiting retailers in Southampton, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and London.

The tour coincides with the launch of an online retail portal called the Insider.

The aim of the initiative is to educate retailers about software as well as hardware.

Sony Ericsson marketing manager, Simon Gilbert said: We want store staff to understand our products a little bit more and wanted to bring them to an exclusive band of store staff with the aim of making them Sony Ericsson ambassadors.

Retailers who have been visited by the Insider Tour over the last few weeks have learnt about the X10, and were given free Sony Ericsson merchandising and taken to a local bowling alley.

One retailer said: Last time Sony Ericsson did something massive was when they did the W series, this time round they have started to do something similar.

Gilbert added: This is the start of the Sony Ericsson ambassador programme and we wanted it to be a bit of fun as well. Four people will be taken to Las Vegas to the CES show, but they will have had to have demonstrated that they are Sony Ericsson ambassadors by training up colleagues and taking part on to the Insider website.

The Insider website launched on 3 March and 4,000 people have registered since then to learn about Sony Ericsson products.

Court Bans Man from Owning a Mobile Phone

A British man has been banned from using a mobile phone for five years after he ignored repeated warnings to stop making silent and fake calls to the emergency services. Barry Docherty, 24 from York has already been previously jailed for making 50 silent calls to the police control room in just one hour.

Following his continued actions, the Crown Prosecution Service applied to York magistrates for an antisocial behaviour order, comonly known as an ASBO which imposes conditions on his life if he wants to stay out of jail.

He is now banned from contacting the emergency services save in case of a genuine situation and is forbidden from being in possession of either a mobile device, or a SIM card that could be put into someone else's mobile phone.

A North Yorkshire spokeswoman said: "We are pleased with today's result, the order sends a clear warning of the consequences of wasting the emergency services' time.

"Valuable police time and resources have been taken up by this individual, and he deserves the restrictions imposed on his ability to carry out nuisance and time-wasting communications."

Coroner rules messages contributed to schoolboy's death

A coroner has found "distressing and disturbing" late-night texts were a "significant factor" in the lead-up to the suicide of a 15-year-old boy.

Katikati College student Michael Powell took his life in a toilet block near his Waihi Beach home on April 20 last year.

At an inquest in January, his parents Heather and David told coroner Peter Ryan they believed Michael killed himself after misinterpreting text messages between him and two girls, aged 13 and 14.

The girls discussed a suicide pact and the 13-year-old sent Michael a series of texts, including one that said: "If she's gone then so am I."

In his findings, Ryan said the extent of the "highly charged emotional outpouring" was considerable and the texts caused Michael "extreme anxiety".

At the inquest the Powells asked Ryan to recommend changes to the Telecommunications Act to encourage young people to take texting seriously.

Ryan said any legislative move to ban messages that caused another person distress would be "unworkable".

But he endorsed the Powells' concerns over the content and timing of teen texting.

"Young teenagers especially should not be texting each other late at night," he said. "Not only is this disruptive to their sleep patterns, but it is also conducive to causing emotions to run wild."

Ryan said texting was different from other forms of communication because people could not read body language or interpret a tone of voice.

"These clues to a person's emotional state are not available to someone who simply receives a text message," he said. "For that reason, people who send text messages should carefully consider the effect on the recipient."

Heather Powell said teenagers should be allowed phones only if they were mature enough to understand the consequences of using them and called on parents to take more control.

She said it was also crucial for teens to get help if they received worrying text messages.

"They absolutely have to seek help for their friends; they've got to take it seriously.

"That text could have been sent because the person is in trouble and trying to seek help, or because they are being dramatic. Either way, they have to be addressed. They must tell someone."
