Win tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ with Sony Ericsson.

Friday, February 5, 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup™ is only months away and this could be your chance to be at the heart of the action, as you watch the teams warm up, pitch-side, before taking your seats for the match.

For a shot at the prize, simply watch a 20-second video in which the cup appears three times. Then use the camera in the on-screen Satio to capture it just once and enter the competition.

We'll be showing a different video every day until 4 March. The more often you come back and snap the cup, the more chances you have of being on the way to South Africa.

And, remember, the prize is for two, so why not get a mate to have a go and double both your chances?

Prospective batteries will serve 20 years?

Japanese company Eamex announced that its engineers managed to develop a technology that can significantly extend the life of Li-Ion batteries. According to available data, the technology will bring the number of cycles to 10 000, which will provide up to 20 years of operation. The basic idea is to stabilize the electrodes and prevent the thinning of the layer of tin, which will provide an opportunity to increase the number of charge / discharge cycles the battery. In today's batteries are used negative electrodes made of gum-coated tin and restraint lithium ions emanating from the positive electrode. The positive electrode is made of silicon and tin, and the emission of ions degrades.

According to the Eamex, they are ready to release the first samples of batteries already this year.

INSIDE CONTACTLESS RELEASES OPEN-SOURCE NFC PROTOCOL STACK

Open NFC for Android, Windows and Linux Platforms Available Under Apache License.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France – Reflecting a clear and growing trend in the mobile industry, INSIDE Contactless, a leading provider of advanced, open-standard contactless chip technologies, announced it is making its Open NFC™ commercial-grade NFC protocol stack (formerly MicroRead Software Foundation) available in a free and open source edition under the Apache™ License, Version 2.0. Offering a consistent API across all NFC hardware, faster time to market and greater flexibility for OEMs and ODMs, INSIDE’s Open NFC 3.4 is available now for WinCE 6.0 (compatible with Windows™ Mobile 7) and Linux 2.6 platforms, and an Android™ implementation will premier with the planned release of Open NFC 3.5 at the end of March.

“Our decision to release Open NFC under the Apache license demonstrates our willingness to lead the way in bringing high quality, well documented NFC software into the open source arena,” said Philippe Martineau, executive vice president of the NFC business line for INSIDE Contactless. “Open NFC fits right in with the trend toward open platforms in the mobile industry, and will benefit device makers as well as software developers and others in the mobile ecosystem in several ways, providing greater impetus to implementing NFC solutions across a broad range of consumer products.”

Martineau anticipates that the availability of an open source NFC protocol stack should also improve the interoperability of NFC devices, and thus accelerate market adoption.

The Open NFC protocol stack provides a complete NFC middleware solution for mobile phones, embedded products and other devices. Open NFC supports several levels of functionality, from low-level RF control to high-level NFC Forum tag handling, peer-to-peer communications as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing, interactions with single-wire protocol SIMs and other secure elements and compatibility with smart cards and RFID tags based on Felica, Mifare and ISO 14443 standards.

“Having an open-source NFC stack like Open NFC is a game-changing development, providing greater flexibility in sourcing NFC controllers and a consistent programming interface,” said Gary Koerper, vice president of Engine Systems, Motorola Mobile Devices. “We congratulate INSIDE Contactless for their contribution to the open source movement.”

“Orange believes Open NFC will be a catalyst for change in the NFC marketplace by reducing market fragmentation and removing barriers to adoption of this promising technology,” said Yves Maitre, senior vice president, Mobile Multimedia and Devices at Orange. “INSIDE Contactless has made a major contribution to the advancement of NFC.”

“Qualcomm understands the increasing importance of open source and community-driven software to the mobile industry, particularly as customer demand for open and flexible software coupled with powerful mobile hardware platforms continues to increase,” said John Elliott, Senior Director of Emerging Connectivity Technologies at Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “It is a great pleasure to see NFC move closer to the open source community, and INSIDE Contactless is one of the visionary companies making this happen.”

Qualcomm now offers two complete NFC handset reference designs, one based on an HSUPA Mobile Station Modem™(MSM™) chipset and one based on a Qualcomm Single Chip™ (QSC™) solution for CDMA2000™. The two reference designs leverage INSIDE Contactless’ NFC solution enabling device manufacturers to bring next-generation NFC handsets to market more quickly and at significantly reduced development cost.

Open NFC was originally developed for INSIDE’s third-generation MicroRead NFC chip that provides the broadest range of NFC options, enabling numerous new contactless applications, and was the first NFC solution to support the single-wire protocol (SWP). The award-winning MicroRead suite combines third-generation silicon, a full set of interfaces, NFC software libraries and APIs, a field-proven reference design and robust standards support to provide a turnkey contactless reader solution.

According to a report from Juniper Research, open source operating systems are now running on 60 percent of the smartphones on the market, and the number of smartphones shipped with open source operating systems will increase from 106 million in 2009 to 223 million by 2014. (See: http://www.juniperresearch.com/shop/viewpressrelease.php?id=185&pr=158).

Availability

The Open NFC protocol stack and the WinCE 6.0 and Linux 2.6 reference implementations are available now under Apache license directly from INSIDE Contactless. The Android reference implementation, also under Apache license, will be available by the end of March 2010. Please contact INSIDE for more information.

Wind River to Add Virtutech Simics Products to Comprehensive Embedded Software Portfolio

ALAMEDA — Wind River, a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel Corporation, announced it will add the Virtutech product line to its embedded software product portfolio after the completion of Intel Corporation’s acquisition of Virtutech signed earlier this week. Virtutech, founded in 1998, is based in San Jose, Calif. and operates a development center in Stockholm, Sweden.

Wind River will sell and support Virtutech’s flagship development platform, Simics, as a stand-alone product and will continue to support all current architectures including ARM, Intel, MIPS and PowerPC. Simics will allow Wind River to offer a market-leading virtual systems development solution in a growing market segment of virtualization and simulation tools for device software development.

“The addition of Virtutech’s development platforms to our product line will allow Wind River to offer greater value to customers across the entire product lifecycle and deepen current relationships with our broad set of silicon partners,” said Ken Klein, president, Wind River. “Time-to-market remains the single most challenging issue that sophisticated electronic equipment manufacturers need to address and ultimately control in order to remain competitive. With the addition of the Simics products, Wind River adds a key solution to further help customers improve time-to-market, as system complexity and ever more stringent demands upon overall system quality rapidly increase.”

“Through our long-standing partnership with Wind River, it became evident that both companies shared a vision of how we can help the electronic systems market rethink how it goes about complex product development by deploying virtual platforms,” said John Lambert, CEO, Virtutech. “Time and again, Virtutech has helped customers and partners improve time-to-market by enabling the full sweep of systems development activities to take place on a virtual platform, freeing them up to apply new and innovative ways of running systems development projects. By combining with Wind River, we now have the opportunity to dramatically accelerate the spread of this key market trend and to bring the benefits of virtual platforms to a broader audience.”

Simics provides binary-compatible hardware simulations that operate completely within a virtualized environment running on standard laptop or desktop PCs. This strategy allows OEMs to undertake critical software development activities on a virtual platform, independently of any hardware development schedules, semiconductor availability constraints or other limitations. This also allows semiconductor manufacturers to redefine complex system-on-chip development with greater ecosystem support and customer engagement. Virtutech therefore enables customers to manage complexity, drive improved quality and achieve higher productivity, all while lowering capital expenditure and shortening total development time.

Acquired by Intel last year, Wind River develops operating systems, middleware (software found between an OS and software application), and software design tools for a variety of embedded computing systems. Its main products include VxWorks, the market-leading proprietary and multicore-ready real-time operating system, and commercial-grade Linux software platforms. The company also provides design services and software expertise, including custom-built solutions, development tools and device testing products. With thousands of customers, Wind River technology is relied upon by most major computer and networking communications companies, and is used by corporations and government agencies such as Alcatel-Lucent, BMW, Boeing, Bombardier Transportation, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NASA, Sony, Verizon and many more.

Intel’s acquisition of privately-held Virtutech is expected to be completed this quarter. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.
About Virtutech

Don’t Be Left Out In The Cold: Stay Connected With The Verizon Wireless Network

Videos on VerizonWirelessTV YouTube Channel Tell Stories of Customers Who Counted on Nation’s Most Reliable Network in Wintertime.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — With Punxsutawney Phil predicting six more weeks of winter, cold weather fans are gearing up for end-of-season getaways. Verizon Wireless customers travel with the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless network, keeping them connected and at least a little more secure whether heading cross-town or cross-country.

The VerizonWirelessTV channel on YouTube (www.youtube.com/VerizonWirelessTV) features three video vignettes about wireless communication and the important role the Verizon Wireless network played when weather got rough for customers, both away and at home.

Winter Weather Can Change Quickly, Affecting Travel
In Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, driving conditions can change fast. During a road trip, one Verizon Wireless customer and her fiancĆ© found out that a reliable network can truly be a lifeline. View the video, “He Wouldn’t Be Here Today If It Wasn’t For Verizon Wireless,” here.

Ice and Snow Storms Make Winter Wonderlands; They Also Make Communication More Important Than Ever
During last year’s devastating ice storm in Kentucky, Verizon Wireless’ network stayed up and running, even as ice-covered trees and roads and electrical power was lost across the state, and kept visitors, residents and safety officials connected throughout the storm. View the video, “Verizon Wireless Network Keeps Customers Connected During Ice Storm,” here.

One winter, Colorado was snowed in, but Verizon Wireless’ network team kept going. Two network technicians used a snow cat to reach a mountaintop location to refuel an emergency generator that powered cell sites along a snowy stretch of interstate to ensure customers stayed connected during the record-breaking Rocky Mountain storm. See the video, “Verizon Wireless Network Weathers Colorado Storm,” here.

Tips to Brace Your Wireless Communications for the Cold
Customers’ wireless phones can be life savers in winter. Verizon Wireless offers the following tips to prepare wireless phones to work best when it’s cold outside:

* Charge phones frequently. Cold temperatures can run down the phone’s battery charge more quickly. Use a car charger to keep the phone’s charge if you get stranded or stuck in traffic on icy or snowy roads.
* Handle your handset with care. The display screen can become brittle when exposed to cold temperatures for long periods of time.
* Keep your phone in a warm place; avoid leaving it in an outside pocket or backpack or in the car overnight. Prolonged exposure to the cold may affect the phone’s display screen. When outside in the cold weather, carry your phone in an inside jacket pocket, keeping it close to your body for warmth.
* Maintain a list of emergency phone numbers – police, fire and rescue agencies; power companies; insurance providers; family, friends and coworkers; etc. – and program them into your phone. Add highway department and school numbers to check for local road and school closings and “no tow” orders.
* Be prepared before heading outside by checking weather, traffic and news reports available on most wireless phones.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $55 billion since it was formed – $5.5 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. In 2009 alone, Verizon Wireless invested $7 billion to expand and advance its network. For more information about Verizon Wireless, visit www.verizonwireless.com.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 to launch on Vodafone

XPERIA X10 available on the network this spring.

Vodafone has confirmed that the Android wielding Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be available in April. Continuing the Android advance, joining the likes of the Google Nexus One, LG InTouch Max and Motorola Milestone, keen punters can "register their interest" on the network's website now.

There's no word on pricing yet but with Vodafone's previous form of being a tad pricey don't expect it to be a bargain. But what will you get for your buck?

Running on Android 1.6 (a 2.0 update will come along later) with a 1.6GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the X10 is expected to be a speedy powerhouse. Ericsson has also added a pair of new menu overlays; Mediascape and Timescape and a best-in-class camera at 8.1-megapixels.

Not bad for a first Android effort we think. With 2010 shaping up to be a year of Android-powered comeback kids, do you think Sony Ericsson can steal the march on the HTC trailblazers?

AT&T and Sling Media Collaborate on SlingPlayer Mobile App for 3G Mobile Broadband Network

SlingPlayer Mobile App Optimized to Conserve Wireless Spectrum.

AT&T* announced that its 3G mobile broadband network will support Sling Media, Inc.'s SlingPlayer Mobile™ app.

Sling Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ: SATS), originally developed its wireless app to make efficient use of 3G network bandwidth – and to conserve the finite wireless spectrum available to the wireless industry. Since mid December 2009, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media -- as well as Apple – that the optimized app can run on its 3G network. The SlingPlayer Mobile app already is available for use today on AT&T’s Wi-Fi network, the nation’s largest with more than 20,000 hotspots.

"Just as we've worked with Sling Media in this instance, we look forward to collaborating with other developers so that mobile customers can access a wider, more bandwidth-sensitive, and powerful range of applications in the future," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. Collaboration with developers like Sling Media ensures that all apps are optimized for our 3G network to conserve wireless spectrum and reduce the risk that an app will cause such extreme levels of congestion that they disrupt the experience of other wireless customers. Our focus continues to be on delivering the nation's most advanced mobile broadband experience and giving our customers the widest possible array of mobile applications."

"We're delighted with AT&T's decision to approve the SlingPlayer Mobile app on their 3G network," said John Gilmore, senior vice president and general manager at Sling Media. "SlingPlayer Mobile on AT&T's 3G network gives customers the best experience possible for watching their home TV while on the go."

AT&T will provide developers with wireless network optimization requirements for video and other applications by the end of the first quarter via its AT&T Developers Program website (http://developer.att.com).

AT&T's announcement today further demonstrates its commitment to fostering the development of a wide range of mobile applications for smartphones, quick-messaging devices and other mobile devices. In January, AT&T hosted its fourth annual Developers Summit, where it announced a range of initiatives to support app development.

Verizon Wireless Communications Store In Columbia, Maryland, Awarded Energy Star® Rating From EPA

• 47 Verizon Wireless Stores Nationwide Now Have Energy Star rating
• Company’s green practices include recycling wireless devices, batteries and accessories through its HopeLine program
• Verizon Wireless named Top Green IT company by IDG Computerworld

LAUREL, MD — The Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Columbia, Maryland is among the first wireless retail stores to rate in the top 25 percent of commercial facilities for energy efficiency and to earn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR®, the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. The Columbia store is one of more than 47 Verizon Wireless retail stores nationwide to receive the ENERGY STAR label.

“The changes we have implemented in our stores are significant because they impact our business, the environment and our ability to provide customers with an industry-leading experience,” said Mike Maiorana, regional president for Verizon Wireless in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. “By being more energy efficient, we can keep operating costs down and redirect those resources to improve the customer experience.”

The Communications Store located at 9021 Snowden Square Dr. in Columbia replaced incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps and installed light-emitting diode (LED) exit signs and motion sensors to activate lighting in portions of the store that are not in constant use, such as the storage room and back offices. In addition, the store’s entire lighting and display systems are controlled by a digital timer system to ensure that lights turn off when the store is closed to avoid energy waste.

Additional energy-saving initiatives included insulating the water heater and piping and replacing the service bay doors with energy efficient glass to reduce the loss of heated or cooled air.

The EPA’s national energy performance rating system provides a 1-to-100 point scale that helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. A building that scores a rating of 75 or higher and occupies 5,000 square feet or more is eligible for the ENERGY STAR. Commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR use an average of 40 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The EPA’s ENERGY STAR is yet another recognition of Verizon Wireless’ ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly Green practices. In 2008, Verizon Wireless was the only wireless carrier named to IDG Computerworld's first-ever list of top Green-IT Companies. Research firm Frost & Sullivan also awarded the company with its 2008 Green Excellence of the Year Award in the Corporate Leadership category for the telecom services industry.

In addition, Verizon Wireless helps the environment and survivors of domestic violence through its HopeLine® program. Verizon Wireless collects no-longer-used wireless phones and equipment from any wireless service provider. The phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates cash grants, wireless phones and airtime to non-profit domestic violence agencies for use by survivors. Through HopeLine, 6.7 million phones have been collected and either refurbished or properly disposed of in an environmentally sound way. More than 200 tons of electronics waste and batteries have been kept out of landfills since 2001.

AT&T Examines Healthcare Technology Solutions with Virtual CIO Roundtable

Senior Healthcare it Executives in Six Major Markets Discuss Leading Strategies and Challenges for Healthcare it in the Coming Years.

Demonstrating the power of new technology to facilitate ‘face-to-face’ meetings more quickly, more often and expand participation in the dialogue on important global and domestic U.S. issues, AT&T* yesterday used its AT&T Telepresence Solution to bring together leading information technology executives and healthcare experts from across the U.S. to participate in a dialogue about the ever-increasing role of technology in healthcare solutions.

“As the national conversation surrounding the U.S. healthcare system continues to develop, technology innovations and applications will be central in creating greater operational and cost efficiencies, as well as improving patient care,” said Dr. Denise W. Hines, vice president of government solutions and education, HealthNovation.

Eight technology and healthcare executives located in six U.S. cities met via AT&T Telepresence Solution to discuss current and future strategies for addressing growing healthcare needs and rising costs. The AT&T Telepresence Solution, an immersive video technology enabled by Cisco TelePresence™, allowed participants to interact face-to-face through ultra-high definition 1080p screens, creating the experience of being in the same room with other participants.

CIOs across the U.S. shared similar situations and strategies for enhancing their companies’ patient care and operational efficiencies through healthcare IT solutions. Some of the main themes from the roundtable included:

Using Resources Efficiently. Time, financial and human resources must be used efficiently and with prioritization to achieve aggressive implementation deadlines to receive grants and other funding. Some organizations are targeting internal departments or groups with a strong technology appetite to lead adoption efforts.

Establishing a Solid Infrastructure. Health information exchanges (HIEs), the transfer of electronic medical records and patient portals depend on a solid, reliable network infrastructure. Without this network foundation, companies compromise physicians’ and customers’ experience.

Sponsoring Technology Adoption. A knowledgeable and on-board healthcare workforce is necessary to reach improved healthcare goals. In addition to training, companies are seeking internal physician or practitioner sponsorship of new technology to expedite its integration into daily practice.

Connecting Multiple HIEs. Several HIEs exist within a state or even single healthcare system. Senior IT executives must work collaboratively with partners and vendors to ensure quick customization and compatibility of disparate systems into larger health ecosystems.

Developing Information Highways.Data warehousing and mining are current areas of exploration for some healthcare IT executives. Many are not looking to create new electronic repositories, but rather develop information highways that combine multiple information input into a meaningful, useful output of relevant, accurate information.

Measuring Success. In addition to traditional financial metrics, healthcare CIOs are examining quality controls, user adoption rates and improved patient care indicators to measure the success of healthcare IT initiatives.

“AT&T understands the importance of technology in improving healthcare efficiencies and increasing collaboration across the country,” said Mike Coffey, senior vice president of compensation, benefits and policy, AT&T. “Sharing information – whether visually via AT&T Telepresence Solution or through an electronic medical record – is an essential element in achieving America’s common healthcare goals of decreased cost and improved care.”

Roundtable participants included senior IT executives in New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Orlando, Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area. Bernie Monegain, editor of Healthcare IT News, served as moderator, and Hines, vice president of government solutions and education at HealthNovation, shared key insights into the current healthcare reform landscape.

Technology CEO Council Calls on Congress to Act on National Export Initiative and Competitiveness Package

Technology Leadership Group Focuses on Innovation Agenda Critical to Economic Recovery, U.S. Competitiveness in Global Marketplace.

WASHINGTON -- CEOs from the nation's leading technology companies called on Congress to act on the Obama Administration's National Export Initiative to double U.S. exports in five years.

In a speech on Thursday outlining the National Export Initiative, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said, "Increasing the export of American products and services to global markets can help revive the fortunes of U.S. companies, spur future economic growth and support jobs here at home."

The Technology CEO Council, a CEO policy advocacy group focused on ensuring U.S. competitiveness through technology leadership, applauded the Administration's National Export Initiative, adding that a critical factor in reaching the goal of doubling exports are policies that ensure that the United States remains the destination for investment, innovation and new job creation.

"Access to world markets is key to the economic growth of American high-technology companies. Current economic projections indicate that by 2013 over 72 percent of spending on information and communications technologies will be outside the United States," said Bruce Mehlman, Executive Director of TCC. "The Administration is to be applauded for its commitment to rigorous export promotion programs, removing our own outdated controls on high-tech exports and implementing favorable trade deals as aggressively as other countries."

The United States cannot achieve its export goals, however, unless it creates a business climate that is competitive globally. In addition to the trade promotion initiatives outlined by President Obama, TCC believes the Administration and Congress should support tax policies that improve the international competitiveness of American companies and workers.

"To double our exports, U.S. companies need worldwide operations and supply chains that span the globe," added Mehlman. "Tax policies that increase the burden on U.S. companies' global operations make American workers less competitive and undermine export-led economic recovery. By contrast, efforts to improve our tax competitiveness – such as passage of an R&D tax credit that increases the Alternative Simplified Credit to 20% – will create jobs here at home and more than pay for themselves over time."

The Technology CEO Council has laid out an innovation agenda to ensure that the United States remains the destination of choice for investment, talent and business growth. According to the Technology CEO Council that agenda should include:

* Tax policies that enable American innovators to compete and win in the global markets, ensuring U.S. jobs and growth.
* Trade policies that give U.S. workers and entrepreneurs greater opportunities to access worldwide customers.
* Export control policies that place U.S. companies on an even playing field with overseas competitors while protecting national security.
* Education efforts and research initiatives that prepare U.S. citizens for 21st Century jobs and create new industries.
* Immigration to ensure that the best and brightest that come to America are educated and create businesses that add to the U.S. economy.

"The trade speech by Secretary Locke highlights efforts that will complement research and education investments promised in the FY2011 budget, all designed to help Americans compete and win in the global economy," added Mehlman. "We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to turn these market opening proposals into reality."

About the Technology CEO Council

The Technology CEO Council is a CEO policy advocacy group focused on ensuring U.S. competitiveness through technology leadership. Corporate Departments Left Open to Voice Call Interception Despite Being 'Prime Targets'

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sensitive departments within organizations are being left vulnerable to mobile phone call interception. A recent survey conducted by ABI Research on behalf of Cellcrypt, (www.cellcrypt.com), the leading provider of secure mobile voice calling, found that fewer than one in five people in departments that handle sensitive information such as financial, legal and research and development have deployed some form of voice encryption solutions.

The survey, conducted amongst 250 senior executives in both medium and large organizations showed that despite regularly discussing financial information (78%), employee data (66%), as well as IP (51%) and commercial secrets (50%), the majority of these conversations are unprotected despite over 80% of respondents believing mobile phones to be as vulnerable, if not more so, than e-mail communications if leaked. Of those who admitted to regularly discussing sensitive information, 80% believed, if leaked, this information would have a major impact on the organization.

In addition to other interception methods such as man in the middle scams and on-device taps, the threat of mobile voice interception has intensified recently with the cracking of encryption on GSM mobile phone calls. In December, the Chaos Computer released the GSM Codebook, a large lookup table of pre-generated GSM encryption keys which allows hackers to rapidly crack A5/1 – the encryption standard for GSM mobile phone call security. Just two weeks later, leading cryptographer Adi Shamir, published a white paper detailing a practical method for cracking the next generation of encryption standard, A5/3, in less than two hours.

"The inherent insecurities of GSM encryption have been well publicized, even though most governments and enterprises have been aware of this threat for a while," said Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO Cellcrypt. "However, this research shows there is still confusion out there about whom, when and how people should be protected from this threat. Organizations need to start taking serious steps to consider coherent security strategies that protect multiple weak spots against attack. This work needs to start sooner rather than later as standard GSM encryption becomes unreliable and open to easier interception within the next six months."

Despite 92% of respondents considering it the organization's duty to provide employees with mechanisms to protect information or their own personal safety when travelling to high-risk areas, several admitted confusion over who was responsible, with Heads of IT, Security, Networking and Operations all being assigned responsibility**.

"Despite sometimes being viewed as something for the movies, crimes such as corporate espionage, kidnap for ransom and extortion by organized criminals can and do happen," commented Stuart Quick, Operations Manager at Henderson Risk Limited. "Mobile voice interception is one way in which these crimes can be facilitated. The increasing interception risk underlines the need for organizations to adopt a robust approach to securing these calls, especially when the senior managers in departments such as finance and legal are prime targets."

*When asked whether senior managers in key departments use voice call encryption solutions for mobile phone voice calls, the survey found that just 13.5% of financial, 17.1% of legal and 18.3% of research and development departments had solutions deployed.

**When asked who in their organization is responsible for ensuring the security/preventing the interception of voice calls, 53% responded the Head of IT, 21% responded security, 7% responded Networking and 6% responded operations.

The number of fixed broadband subscribers will rise to 501 million at the end of 2014, according to new market data released by ABI Research. Of those, about 106 million will subscribe to services delivered via fiber. Fiber broadband subscribers totaled 44 million at the end of 2009.

The number of fixed broadband subscribers totaled more than 422 million at the end of 2009, a 9% increase from 2008. ABI Research industry analyst Serene Fong notes that, “Broadband penetration continues to increase since more service providers are offering triple-play services and driving down access prices.”

Among the three broadband technologies, 65% of worldwide fixed broadband consumers subscribe to DSL, 25% to cable and 11% to fiber broadband services. The number of fiber broadband subscribers is increasing fastest, showing a compound annual growth rate of 20% from 2008 to 2014.

“File sharing, music downloads, IPTV, online gaming and video conferencing are all acting to increase the user demand for high speed Internet. The number of fiber broadband subscribers is increasing with growing popularity of these services,” comments research associate Khin Sandi Lynn.

The Asia-Pacific region has the highest fiber broadband penetration, followed by North America. Asia-Pacific represents nearly 84% of worldwide fiber broadband subscribers. South Korea and Japan have the highest fiber broadband penetration. NTT is the largest fiber broadband operator with approximately 12 million subscribers.

In 2009, Western Europe had only about two million fiber broadband subscribers — a very low penetration compared to North America and Asia Pacific, although Western European countries are planning to accelerate fiber broadband penetration.

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) plans to expand the number of its Wi-Fi access points to 5,000 by the end of 2010 compared to 1,300 units currently, according to company president Shiao-tung Chang.
