Naming the baby and some other bits

Saturday, May 8, 2010

LONDON, England – Over the last two days Rhiain has been trawling the suggested names for the Design by Community project. We have 148 entries to choose from, and we’ve come up with what we think is the fairest way of giving you the chance to choose them. Starting on Monday, we’ll present a poll with the first 30 names. Voting will be open for 24 hours at which point we’ll put up a new poll with the next 30 names, by Friday next week we’ll have run five polls. You’ll be able to vote for your three favourite names in each poll. When the first round of voting is finished, we’ll then take the top three from each poll and put them into a shortlist for the final vote to find a winner. Sound complicated? It is, a bit. But we’re confident it’ll be fair to all those who put names (and reasons) forward and give you the best opportunity to choose your favourites.

Now, things have been a little quiet on here today. That’s ’cause we’ve been in a Nokia Conversations workshop for the last two days, working out what we’re going to do over the next few months. The good news is we’ve got a bunch of exciting things coming up on the site, many of which will involve you directly. No, we’re not hinting at new products or services, but some potential changes to Conversations. More on that later. The bad news is that there is no news. Sorry, normal service will resume tomorrow.

When the cows go moo

DEVON, England – So here’s an odd one to ponder for the weekend – could cows have mobile phones? Last week I got to stay on a dairy farm for the weekend (city kids need to smell some country air from time to time). Whilst there, we got a tour of the milking parlour and, even though I’m no stranger to such places, I was surprised to see the technology in use. But I was also struck by the potential that adding mobile phone technology to the process could help improve things further. Read on after the jump.

Each cow in the herd wears a special collar containing a unique transmitter, so when she enters the milking parlour, this passes a bunch of information to the milking system (a bit like the one written about here). First and foremost is efficiency. Thanks to the cow’s transponder, the computer knows how much milk each one is producing. As such, it then dictates how much feed she’s allowed to have whilst in the parlour. In a game of efficiency, and when there are 160 cows to feed in the parlour twice a day, this matters a lot over the course of the year.

One of the key parts of dairy farming particularly when, like the herd I visited, it’s a “closed herd” (where all the animals are bred on the farm, not bought in) is ensuring the cows get pregnant at the right time. Now, the transponder on the cow knows more than just how much milk the cow is producing. It also measures “activity” and will alert the farmer when the cow shows abnormal activity. Why? Well, it seems cows are creatures of habit, except when they’re “bulling” (the term that describes when they’re ready to become pregnant). When a cow is “bulling” the farmer has a 12 hour window to get her inseminated. Time is of the essence. Thankfully, given her two visits to the parlour every day, there’s an opportunity for the farmer to be alerted. Previously, the herd would need to be observed multiple times daily to find out when cows were ready. Not much fun when you consider that much of this type of activity happens at night time.

So what does this have to do with mobile phones? Well, having a transponder which sends information twice a day is one thing, but why couldn’t it be instant? Why couldn’t the cow have a mobile device (probably without a screen and keypad) instead of a simple transponder. Mobiles already have accelerometers, which would help with the activity detection, and GPS which would help with locating the cow. Add in a sim card and data could be sent to the farmer instantly. Using SMS, the farmer could get a text message telling him what’s happening with a cow as soon as it happens. I’m not talking about reinventing any wheels here, really. All the technology already exists, simply by thinking about it (and using it) in a different context could make a big difference.

This isn’t just about efficiency, it’s also about animal welfare. Unlike humans, cows can’t tell us when they’re sick, it’s up to farmers to observe and know their cows and then get the vet when help is needed. Having better information, faster, can help farmers better look after the animals, and ensure they’re having a healthier, happier life.

My knowledge of cows doesn’t stretch very far and what I’m writing about is only what I learned at the weekend. However, to me it seems like a very obvious use case for mobile devices, going beyond what we’d consider them for today. Why couldn’t an animal have its own mobile phone? It might not be able to read text messages, but the information the phone could provide the farmer could be invaluable. The only question that remains, obviously, is whether the cow’s mobile should have a 3.2-megapixel or 5-megapixel camera.

Ovi Life Tools lands in China

BEIJING, China – Today sees the introduction of Ovi Life Tools in China with mobile content covering health care, agriculture, education and entertainment. The service, which uses SMS to deliver content to users daily, is available from today on the Nokia 1616 and Nokia 1800. The recently announced devices are designed to be affordable yet packed with features.

Ovi Life Tools brings good quality affordable and locally relevant information to rural users. Nokia’s Ovi Life Tools now boasts over 1.5 million subscribers across India and Indonesia, where it’s been available since its official launch last year. Expanding the service to China is sure to see a big uplift in users.

For many living in rural communities, experiencing the internet happens for the first time on a mobile phone. Whilst in the west we might squabble over screen size or the type of browser we have access to, for rural users in emerging markets, the internet is simply about having access to information. In many parts of the world where Ovi Life Tools exist, people don’t get access to newspapers, TV or radio. Accessing information such as the latest crop prices, or educational information to help kids learn is hugely valuable.

One of Ovi Life Tool’s key strengths is its delivery of locally relevant information. In both India and Indonesia, this has been a key driver of the rapidly increasing subscriber numbers. In China, users will be able to access the service on a subscription basis, or pay as they go, making the service easy and affordable to access for a wide range of potential users.

We’ve written before about innovation on Nokia Conversations. Whilst many of us might view innovation as being about creating the latest smart phone, for Nokia it means so much more. Expanding the internet to a wider group of people, with services that are tailored and relevant to them, delivered through devices that are affordable, is innovation that matters.

Samsung Caliber (SCH-R860) Review

Mobile-review have posted a review of the Samsung Caliber (SCH-R860). Here is their final impression.

Samsung Caliber is very far from a perfect phone. It lacks many features that are considered standard in most phones. The screen is so/so, the processor is not the fastest, there are some software issues, but let’s not forget what and who this phone is for. It is designed to deliver the most contemporary look and feel to the lower cost CDMA carriers and does what it is supposed to do greatly. In this particular case, MetroPCS did not have such a feature rich phone from a great brand name in its limited lineup of phones and while the pre-rebate price of $249.99 is high in comparison to what is available to GSM network users for the same money, there is not too many phones of similar caliber among prepaid CDMA offerings that can match this Caliber at this price. Plus, the rebates MetroPCS is running at this time do make Caliber a good value.

MetroCast Expands Capacity and Supports Rich Media Services with Motorola High-Density Downstream Solution

MetroCast is latest MSO to adopt Motorola solution for DOCSIS® 3.0 high-density downstream and channel bonded solutions.

HORSHAM, Pa. – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that MetroCast, a family-owned cable television operator with more than 100,000 internet subscribers in nine states, will deploy the Motorola BSR 64000 TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module to cost-effectively and efficiently scale its Internet service across its broadband network. Rolling out DOCSIS® 3.0 with the TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module will ultimately provide MetroCast customers access to higher-speed internet tiers supporting rich streaming and potential on-demand services through additional downstream capacity and channel bonded-enabled broadband connectivity.

The growing demand for increased bandwidth – combined with competition – is prompting cable operators to seek cost-effective technologies that deliver a substantial boost to both peak downstream Internet speeds and average downstream capacity available to subscribers. The Motorola TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module enables up to eight times existing peak rate and six times average throughput capacity to MetroCast’s existing BSR 64000 chassis. By doing this, Motorola’s integrated cable modem termination system (I-CMTS) solution addresses two key business needs for cable operators today: higher speed service rates to attract new customers and greater capacity to alleviate network congestion and maintain customer satisfaction.

"A straight-forward migration of our broadband infrastructure to support the advances in broadband services is a priority,” said Josh Barstow, vice president of Advanced Services, MetroCast. “The Motorola TX32 addresses the economics associated with network expansion by greatly reducing port costs and leveraging existing BSR 64000 and 2:8 modules found across our CMTS environment today. The result is our ability to provide customers with very high-speed Internet access supporting richer streaming and on-demand services while greatly reducing the complexity and cost of deployment.”

As the highest-density, integrated downstream technology on the market, the Motorola TX32 supports 32 QAM channels in a single slot within the Integrated Motorola BSR 64000 CMTS/Edge Router. The solution enables cable operators to deliver significantly increased bandwidth to new DOCSIS 3.0 modems, such as Motorola’s next-generation SURFboard® SB6120, SBV6220 and SBG6580 cable and digital voice modems and integrated gateways, while preserving operator investment in legacy DOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 modems.

“MetroCast is the latest MSO to take advantage of our simple and economical migration path to an integrated DOCSIS 3.0 platform,” said Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. “Motorola’s I-CMTS offers the industry’s highest-density downstream capability that dramatically reduces the cost to deploy additional network bandwidth, which is important for operators wanting quicker time to market and the ability to leverage and protect existing assets.”

The Motorola BSR 64000 TX32 Decoupled Downstream Module is a DOCSIS 3.0-qualified product. Click here for more information on Motorola’s DOCSIS 3.0 ultra-broadband products. For updates visit www.mediaexperiences2go.com and follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/motomedia2go.

Verizon Wireless Delivers $1.2 Million Check To Complete $1.5 Million Pledge To National Law Enforcement Museum In Washington, D.C.

• Verizon Foundation Grant Will Fund Educational and Technology Programs at Museum
• Program Will Include Key Focus on Domestic Violence Prevention
• Museum to Break Ground in Washington, D.C. Fall 2010

WASHINGTON, DC — Verizon Wireless delivered the final installment of a $1.5 million grant to the National Law Enforcement Museum. The $1.2 million check, presented by Verizon Wireless Regional President Mike Maiorana and Mark Harris, Vice President, Federal Government Sales, follows an earlier $300,000 donation given last year. The funds, provided by Verizon’s philanthropic arm, the Verizon Foundation, will be used to create educational and interactive technology programs at the new museum, to break ground this fall in the nation’s capital.

“This month, we’ll commemorate National Police Week, and I can’t think of a better way to mark that occasion than by delivering a check for $1.2 million dollars to the group responsible for building what promises to be the world’s most comprehensive museum of law enforcement,” said Mike Maiorana. “The educational programs we’re funding will include an emphasis on domestic violence prevention, an issue of enormous importance to Verizon Wireless’ 81,000 employees nationwide.”

Verizon Wireless works with law enforcement and government agencies to support domestic violence prevention and awareness efforts in communities nationwide. Since 2001, Verizon Wireless has collected seven million no-longer-used wireless phones and donated nearly $8 million dollars to domestic violence prevention agencies and organizations through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® phone recycling program. The phones – from any carrier, in any condition – are collected in Verizon Wireless stores nationwide and in special collections, often organized with the help of law enforcement officers.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is spearheading the construction of the National Law Enforcement Museum. Craig W. Floyd, chairman of the fund, said: “The Verizon Foundation grant will fund the development of interactive learning tools and educational programs that will enhance the museum experience and meet national standards of learning in history, civics, science and math.”

This week in search 5/7/10

This week was a big one for search. We announced a number of new enhancements:

A new look for Google.
By now, you've probably noticed Google has a fresh look and feel. This week, we announced a new contextually relevant left-hand panel on the search results page that brings together all of the most relevant search tools and refinements for your particular query. It makes navigation quick and easy — you can seamlessly jump to and from different types of results, from Books to Images to News, or dig deeper by narrowing down results by time or topic. The new “Something different” feature at the bottom of the left-hand panel helps you find other topics that are related to your query, broadening the possibilities for your search. In addition to this new navigation, we also slightly changed our logo, which is now brighter, simpler and overall more modern.

Ultimately, this latest evolution of Google makes it much easier to pinpoint more precisely what you’re looking for. We hope you're as excited as we are about these new changes!

Sites with images feature
Having more information upfront can be helpful in choosing the best webpages to visit, particularly when you're searching sites rich with images. So this week, we introduced a new way to view search results for sites with lots of images. Each result will now include a strip of images from the website, so you can get a better preview of what each page has to offer. To enable this new feature, simply do your image-focused query on Google, click on "more search tools" in the left-hand navigation, and then click on "sites with images." You'll notice the search results page completely transforms.

Example searches: [orchids] and [salt ponds]

Translate with Google Goggles
We launched Google Goggles in December as a new way to search by sight, with your mobile phone's camera. From identifying landmarks, books, artwork — even wine bottle labels — Goggles is an interesting tool for expressing your queries beyond just text. This week, we released a new version of Goggles with translation capabilities built in. To use it, point your phone's camera at a foreign word or phrase and use the "region of interest button" to draw a box around specific words. After Goggles detects the text, select the source and destination languages and press the "translate" button. To use this, you'll need Google Goggles v1.1 on an Android device that's running version 1.6 and higher.

We hope that you enjoy the features we launched this week, and that they make your search experience even better.

Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® Presents Financial Grant To Rutgers University Department Of Sexual Assault Services And Crime Victim Assistance In

New Jersey.

Rutgers University Facilities Department Contributes 300 Cell Phones to the UHopeLine Recycling Program to Support Domestic Violence Victims
• Verizon Wireless donates $5,000 through its HopeLine program to the Rutgers University Department of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance
• Rutgers University Facilities department donates 300 recycled cell phones through Verizon’s UHopeLine program
• The phones will be recycled or refurbished and sold to raise money to support domestic violence victims

ORANGEBURG, NY — Verizon Wireless, provider of the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G network, announced it is presenting a $5,000 financial grant through its HopeLine® program to the Rutgers University Department of Sexual Assault Services & Crime Victim Assistance. HopeLine was founded with the goal of assisting community agencies and organizations that support survivors of domestic violence.

From its work with UHopeLine, an extension of HopeLine that places permanent collection points on college campuses for the recycling of cell phones, Rutgers is also donating 300 devices that were previously used by the school’s Facilities department before its recent upgrade to the Verizon Wireless network. As part of HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects wireless phones, batteries and accessories from any wireless service provider and puts the nation’s most reliable wireless network to work in our communities by turning these unused phones into support for victims of domestic violence.

“UHopeLine helps raise awareness among young men and women about domestic violence issues at a time when many young adults may not be aware of the support options available to them,” said Pat Devlin, regional president at Verizon Wireless. “We thank Rutgers University and the School of Social Work for taking a leading role in this effort. The generosity of the Rutgers community, along with consumers nationwide, has helped HopeLine collect over $7 million and properly reuse or dispose of over 1.6 million phones since the program began in 2001, all of which has been used to support domestic violence victims.”

Verizon Wireless presented Ruth Anne Koenick, director of the Rutgers Department of Sexual Assault Services and Crime Victim Assistance, with a $5,000 check during a ceremony held at the Livingston campus Student Center. This money will be used by the department to help fund activities that will raise awareness of dating violence and provide aid to domestic violence survivors on campus and in the student community.

"UHopeLine has brought awareness about the seriousness of dating violence on college campuses to the Rutgers community," said Rachel Schwartz, UHopeLine Program Coordinator, Center on Violence Against Women and Children, Rutgers School of Social Work. "The program has allowed Rutgers students, faculty, staff and alumni the opportunity to really come together in taking a community-level stand against domestic and dating violence, while supporting survivors with cell phone donations. With the donation from Facilities, we will have collected over 1,000 phones across all three campuses (New Brunswick/Piscataway, Newark, and Camden) in the first two years of the program and we are excited to have the opportunity to significantly contribute to this important project."

Rutgers became the first school nationwide to join the UHopeLine program in October of 2008. Since then, the university has expanded the program throughout its family of campuses, with collection points at the Rutgers Student Center, Busch Campus Center, Cook Campus Center, Douglass Campus Center, Livingston Student Center, Camden Campus Center, Paul Robeson Campus Center at Newark, School of Social Work and Winants Hall.

In addition to the UHopeLine program, Verizon Wireless established a $100,000 scholarship fund in 2008 at the Center on Violence Against Women and Children for deserving School of Social Work graduate students. Named the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® Scholarship, income generated by the endowment is used to award scholarships, annually, to at least three Rutgers graduate social work students enrolled in the School of Social Work’s Master of Social Work (MSW) specialization on violence against women and children, the first such program in the country.

Wireless customers can also donate devices and accessories to HopeLine at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the New York metro area and across the nation. For store locations and to learn how to donate a phone using a postage-paid mailing label, visit www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
