The new button appears in the application error dialog; if the user chooses to click it, the Google Feedback client running on the device will analyze the offending app and compose a report with information needed to diagnose it. The system is set up with user privacy in mind — the app developer will not receive information which could identify the user in any way. The user can also preview all information that will be sent.

If users choose to do so, they may also send additional system information like device logs. Because there is a chance these may contain private information, they will not be passed on to the developer; they will be used by Google to track down bugs in the Android system itself.

On the receiving end, developers will get tools to diagnose, triage and fix bugs in their apps. A popular app can generate hundreds of thousands of reports. Google Feedback aggregates them into "bugs" - individual programming errors. Bugs are displayed to developers sorted by severity, measured as the rate at which reports for the bug are flowing in.

Clicking on a bug will display information such as stack traces, statistics about which type of hardware the bug occurred on and what versions of the app the user was running. In case of freezes, stack traces for all threads in the app will be displayed. This data should give developers a good idea how well their apps are faring in the wild.

The popularity of the iPad, which starts at $499, will spur a sixfold increase in industrywide shipments of tablet computers by 2014, according to research firm IDC. Worldwide shipments will rise to 46 million from 7.6 million this year, Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC said last week. It expects a total of 398 million portable personal computers to ship in 2014.

AOSON MID M500, New Chinese 3G MID with ANDROID

Aoson a Chinese manufacturer based in Shenzhen which is famous for his clones has unveiled a new MID ordiphone running Android OS.

The Aoson M500 is very elegant and the design furiously remind us the famous lines of Nokia N97. At the front of the unit there are 4 direct access buttons, a joystick, a microphone and a speaker. At the back Aoson implemented a footstand to hold the device.

The M500 has a 5-inch resistive touch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 and you can use the integrated stylus to avoid fingerprints. It adopts the famous operating system Android, and is powered by a Marvell PXA 303-624 MHz. According to the manufacturer, it is possible to install Windows 98, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 7, Mac 9.1 and Linux 2.4 in oder to satisfy multi-boot amateur. The processor is supported by 128MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM. And of course, there is a SD slot to expand storage capacity.


The M500 has a full Internet connectivity as it features a 3G (WCDMA, EVDO) and a WiFi module, plus a GPS chip. Aoson announced that its MID can play HD videos up to 720p and has a HDMI output. Finally, it measures 152 x 83 x 16.5mm, has a G-sensor and its battery of 2500mAh offers an autonomy of 4 hours. It is now available in China for a price of $265.

Seagate to announce SSD-threatening hybrid drive

By your powers combined...

Trying for glory a second time, Seagate is very soon to announce a hybrid solid state and spinning disk drive, the Momentus XT, with no operating system dependencies.

It marries a 2.5-inch, 7200 rpm 250, 320 or 500GB, 3Gbit/s SATA hard disk drive (HDD) with a 4GB solid state drive (SSD), presumably a Seagate Pulsar drive, with data cached in the SSD using a so-called Adaptive Memory algorithm. This monitors data transfers to and from the drive, starting when it's first installed and booted up, and copies the most active files and data into the SSD.

It continually does this and, says Mark Wojtasiak, a Seagate senior product marketing manager: "On the second boot it knows about 80 per cent of your activity and you'll see dramatic increases in the speed of boot, application load and so forth. By the third boot it's nearly 100 per cent there."

Over time as your activity profile changes so do the contents of the SSD. He said that all writes go the hard drive first so that, should the SSD ever fail, the data is still on the drive. The SSD uses single-level cell NAND and Seagate has tested it for five years' worth of use and not seen any loss of performance.

It is a second-level cache as there is a 32MB DRAM cache which, Seagate says, improves write I/O speed with the SSD greatly increasing read I/O speed. The caching operations do not require any support from the host operating system, a requirement which derailed the previous Seagate Momentus PSD drives of 2006 and 2007. They linked a 256MB SSD cache to the spinning disk and relied on Windows Vista making good use of the pair. It didn't.

The pitch then was to save energy - PSD standing for Power Saving Drives. This time around the focus is on performance. How does it do?

Seagate tested the drive on the SysMark 2007 benchmark. The chart shows that, generally, the Momentus XT is within striking distance of SSD performance, and well ahead of raw disk drive performance, both a basic 7200rpm 500GB drive from Hitachi GST and a 10K Velociraptor. Adding up all the times on the tests in the chart, the SSD leads with 140.1 seconds. Next is the Momentus XT with 153.8 seconds, WD's Velociraptor is third with 188.2 seconds and the HGST is fourth with a 7200 rpm drive at 225.6 seconds.

The market aim is to sell the drive into gamers' workstations and high-end notebooks, offering near-SSD performance at much lower prices - a quarter of SSD prices, according to Seagate. ASUS, a Seagate OEM, is to unveil a ROG G73JH system with two Momentus XT drives which should be well-received.

Seagate calculates that a notebook user with 2GB RAM and a 250GB HDD, 5400 or 7200rpm, is best advised to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and the 250GB Momentus XT for the best combination of performance and value, compared to upgrading to a 250GB SSD and/or going to 8GB of RAM.

Toshiba is considering whether to put its own hybrid SSD/HDD product into production.

James Bagley, a senior analyst at Storage Strategies Now, said: "I can see applications in mobile clients like my laptop that only has one drive slot. Using a caching algorithm for hot data, you could get SSD performance and spin the drive only when necessary. I don’t see it as an enterprise solution; better to build a hybrid array."

Claus Egge, an independent storage analyst previously at IDC, said: "This is about boosting throughput on a Notebook. Users have certainly enjoyed the speed of SSD in netbooks. So here is a way of similar performance at a better price. Success? I expect certain high-spec machines to ship with this as standard, and lower down as a config option." Desktop users, beset by lengthy Windows and app load times may well look on with envy and hope that Seagate brings out SSD-enhanced Barracudas.

Seagate is also introducing a 750GB, 7200rpm Momentus drive with a 16MB cache and the SATA 3Gbit/s interface.

There is no detailed information on Momentus XT pricing but our quick rule of thumb is to assume a price of about a quarter of WD's 250GB SSD for now.

Intel intros latest thin'n'light laptop chips

Intel has announced the release of 32nm Core processors for thin'n'light laptops, allowing all of us MacBook Air fans the hope of a major update in the not-too-distant future.

On the list we have the 1.2GHz Core i3-330UM, the 1.2GHz i5-430UM, the 1.2GHz i5-540UM and the 1.33GHz i7-660UM. All four contain two cores and HyperThreading technology to make them appear as four-core parts to the host OS.

All but the Core i7 contain 3MB of L3 cache - the 660UM has 4MB. Each CPU has an on-board GMA 3150 GPU dynamically running at 166-500MHz.

The i5 and i7 parts support Intel's Turbo Boost system, allowing them to overclock themselves should there be thermal headroom available. The 430UM will go up to 1.73GHz, the 540UM to 2GHz and the 660UM to 2.4GHz.

Intel didn't say how much the 330UM and 430UM chips will cost, but the 540UM and 660UM will be $241 and $278, respectively, when bought in batches of 1000. We presume that's because the i3 and unpriced i5 parts are ready just yet, which may hold back the anticipated Air update.

Lucid Puppy 5.0 consists of the popular Puppy Linux architecture that Puppy founder Barry Kauler has been refining through 4 editions of Puppy Linux. But this time Puppy is built with binary packages from the latest Ubuntu release Lucid Lynx, hence Lucid Puppy 5.0. The Puppy architecture is well known to be lean and fast, and friendly and fun, and Lucid Puppy is no exception.

Because of the Ubuntu binary files, the development time to produce program packages that are tested and configured for Lucid Puppy is extremely short. In fact, one thing that is new in Lucid Puppy is Quickpet, offering many Linux programs ready to use with a single click. So, click, and you can be using Gimp to edit pictures, Kompozer to build a web site, Songbird to manage your music collection, and many others. Because Puppy is built for personal computers, there is a choice in browsers: the four main ones, Firefox, Seamonkey, Chromium, and Opera are all also available for one-click installation. Some people even like to alternate browsers so Lucid Puppy has a simple program to select whichever of the browsers you would like to set as default.

Another thing about Lucid Puppy is that it boots directly to the desktop. Many people will not need to do anything more than that in order to begin using Lucid Puppy. However, if there is anything you want to change, the tools to personalize the desktop are all immediately at hand. Locale and Language can be changed with just one click and many of the programs, including the word processor Abiword, the spreadsheet Gnumeric, the text editor Geany, and the browser Chromium, open immediately in the language of choice. For other programs such as Firefox, selecting one’s language involves just a few more clicks than that. Yet another of the tools that needs very few clicks is a new tool for connecting to the Internet, named Simple Network Setup, which it is. Lucid Puppy also has a very simple, one-click Update feature to download and install any necessary bugfixes.

Here is one other thing about Lucid Puppy that is kind of interesting: it is the first major edition of Puppy Linux (1 through 4, and now 5) that was not directly prepared by Barry Kauler. For this 5th Puppy, it was the entire Puppy community that did the work, with Mick Amadio, Chief Developer, and Larry Short, Coordinator.

The packages for Puppy 4.0 were compiled from source using T2 (http://t2-project.org) back in November 2007. There have been upgraded packages since then, however the original base packages (such as Xorg 7.3) are still being used. In fact, the latest official release, 4.3.1, has been and continues to be our most popular Puppy, and is still "going strong", with many puplets (other puppies based on 4.3.1, such as Puppee, NOP and Lighthouse Pup). Arguably, if this guy works for you, why change?

Quirky
Barry Kauler, the founder of Puppy Linux and Woof, created Quirky as an avenue to explore the latest ideas. There may be some features in this distro that you won't find in other puppies, either different applications and utilities, different system scripts/behaviour, or even some fundamanetally new underlying behaviour. This is very much a moving target. Quirky is currently built from packages compiled in T2. Some of the ideas may be a bit strange, hence the name "Quirky"!

Wary and Very-Wary
Wary is intended to be state-of-the-art, built with the latest Woof and recent packages, except for some rollbacks where newer packages are considered less than satisfactory. Currently, Wary uses the same T2 packages as Quirky, but Xorg is rolled back to version 7.3 (as, quite frankyly Xorg 7.4 and 7.5 have a lot wrong with them). Wary may be your better choice for older video hardware. Very Wary goes one step further and also rolls back the kernel to version 2.6.30.5 -- again, this may suit older hardware, also we have a large collection of drivers for old analog modems with this kernel -- we are unable to compile many of these drivers with later kernels.
FatDog64
FatDog64 is recently compiled from source using T2 and optimised for the Intel 64-bit x86 (and compatible) CPUs. This built tends to be leading-edge in terms of features and application versions.
Puppeee
Puppeee is a remaster of Puppy 4.3.1, optimised to run on the EeePC netbook. A lot of work has gone into compatibility with EeePC hardware, so this distro is a good choice if you have one of these netbooks. The developer is also planning "Fluppy", which will target a wider range of netbooks.

So many more puppies!
It is so easy to create a custom Puppy, either by using Woof or remastering the live-CD (there is an super-easy remaster program in the Setup menu), and this has resulted in a huge choice of custom puppies. It is not difficult to describe when to use three applications for iPad. For some people Pages alongside Bluetooth keypad may substitute a massive desktop computer and even a laptop at times. This way we have a light and simple temporary solution for writers, journalists and those who express themselves in words. As to Numbers you don’t have to think twice as the spreadsheets will be useful for tradespeople. Having worked in retail in some not very distant past I appreciated (in days of Win CE or even Palm OS) the advantages of an electronic spreadsheet you can edit over pen and paper, which always got lost. Even here Keynote differs quite radically from the rest. If Pages allows and encourages to start anew, and Numbers allows the import of readymade spreadsheets to fill in on the tablet, Keynote for iPad can be used to demonstrate a finished product. Presentations are better created in normal conditions and iPad connected to a bigger screen or a video projector is quite convenient to show the results of work.

Eventually what we see in Pages, Numbers and Keynote for iPad is three different, but similar applications for the creation of something new, unique and beautiful away from your laptop or desktop PC. This is the way it should be as the tablet is meant to occupy the place between laptops for work and smartphones with entertainment features. It is more comfortable than iPhone and less functional than MacBook. After all the features of a new gadget have to be understood, recycled and taken as they are. These features should be constantly projected onto the numerous application created or adapted precisely for the tablet.

The ringtone volume is enough for the majority of situations, but its sound is not very clear. The same can be said about the performance of the speaker during the talk. There is a bit of vibration and the sound is not clear enough. I deliberately checked it with a number of phones on sale and in every case I had the same result. The quality of connection was normal, but the speaker spoils the picture. The same can be seen in Nokia 6730 Classic. It must be a sign of a low-end phone.

In Europe the handset is priced at 160. This money can buy you different touchscreen models, but we are speaking sliders here. This Nokia handset was created to compete with last year’s Samsung S7350, which sells well even today and costs €30 less. Samsung has in its portfolio a run-of-the-mill model in the shape of Shark 2 S5550, which will be no less popular than this Nokia phone. Samsung doesn’t see any potential for sliders in this price range. People in the company believe that the sliders have to be either cheaper or more expensive than this. Given the fact, that Samsung is the world leader in this form factor and managed to make it so popular, it can be trusted.

This model has no significant advantages. There is no Wi-Fi support, it lacks many features of a modern smartphone – has a small screen, simple functionality accompanied by high price. This is surely a model for impulse buying. It’s difficult to use maps when you have no integrated GPS. You can do it, though it will be everything but comfortable.

This model is interesting as a phone for calls. If your expectations are not too high, the handset will not disappoint you. It is a pleasant phone with expected flaws, but surprisingly without rivals. It is unrivaled, because in this price range similar phones are just not offered. The power of Nokia brand will do the trick and the model will have reasonable sales, at least in the beginning. Then its popularity will subside to a moderate level. Even the multitude of colors will not change the situation. It can’t be helped.

Society for Information Display Reveals Winners of 15th Annual Display of the Year Awards

Proliferation of 3D, Touch and Green Tech Evident in 2010 Selections.

CAMPBELL, Calif. -- The Society for Information Display (SID), the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic display technology, revealed the 2010 winners of the 15th annual Display of the Year Awards, presented to the products deemed to have most significantly advanced the state of the art in display technology during the preceding calendar year. The inventive products selected as this year's honorees highlight the proliferation of several key trends, including 3D, touch technology and power-efficient "green" solutions — all of which contribute to an increasingly personalized user experience.

The six products chosen — two each for Display, Display Component and Display Application of the Year categories — will be honored at the annual SID Luncheon on May 26, to be held during Display Week 2010 (May 23-28) at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Wash. The top, or Gold Award, winner in each category will screen a short video on the winning product during the ceremony.

Display of the Year

Gold Award: LG Display 47-in. 3D LCD Panel

LG Display's 47-in. 3D LCD module is the first commercially available TFT-LCD module for 3D televisions in the mid-40-inch range. The panel works with polarized glasses and provides excellent, bright, and comfortable-to-eye 3D imagery, free from crosstalk and flicker that causes dizziness and eye tiredness. The patterned retarder separates the polarization states between the odd and even lines so that right- and left-eye images can be seen perfect separately. Right-eye images are presented by the odd lines, and left-eye images by the even lines. Viewers' right and left eyes therefore see different images with the polarized glasses, making the images appear three-dimensional. In addition, the panel also uses IPS (in-plane switching) for superior viewing. It employs LG Display's proprietary technology to realize clear imagery, and is brighter than any other currently available 3D LCD panels that use glasses.

Silver Award: Pixel Qi 3Qi Multimode LCD

Like standard backlit AMLCD displays, the 3Qi Multimode LCD from startup Pixel Qi renders quality full-color images, full-motion video, and high screen luminance. However, in environments with high ambient light levels, the 3Qi's reflective mode contributes to the rendered image, allowing the backlight to be turned down or off. This unique capability delivers significant power savings, an attractive screen and a comfortable reading experience, with very high resolution. Outdoors, the 3Qi display's Transflective 2.0 technology comes into play — each pixel is mainly reflective, but has about the same transmissive efficiency as a standard LCD, enabling the user to experience a crisp image with excellent contrast and brightness in any light. This highly "green" LCD consumes 80 percent less power in reflective mode, yet delivers a contrast ratio of 10:1 and a hemispheric reflectance approaching 30 percent — typical of the best electrophoretic displays.

Display Component of the Year

Gold Award: N-Trig DuoSense (for pen, touch and multi-touch)

N-trig's DuoSense solution offers a more natural interaction between people and their computers by enabling pen and true multi-touch capabilities in a single device. Utilizing an all-in-one transparent sensor that integrates on top of any LCD panel, the DuoSense digitizer is sensitive, accurate, low power, and easily integrated into existing solutions. DuoSense is based on projected capacitive touch, and employs highly sensitive pen functionality, with the option of using either an electrostatic pen or a battery-powered Digital Pencil. The Digital Pencil can be provided as an add-on option for systems that did not originally include in-the-box pen functionality.

Silver Award: RealD XL Cinema System

The 2008 Silver Award winner for the first implementation of its stereoscopic 3D cinema technology, RealD was once again selected for its latest 3D cinema projection innovation. Inspired by the need to present high-quality 3D images on larger screens, the XL Cinema System is an efficient polarization modulator that mounts externally to a digital cinema projector. It works in concert with passive, circular-polarizing eyewear to produce cinematic-quality 3D images. A single digital cinema projector using a XL Cinema System is capable of showing 3D movies on screens up to 80 feet in width, an industry-best. Moreover, 2D to 3D changeover is simple and the XL Cinema System utilizes the same lamp and lamp power as 2D projections, conserving resources and allowing theaters to be maintained in a greener and more cost-effective manner.

Display Application of the Year

Gold Award: Nikon COOLPIX S1000pj

The COOLPIX S1000pj is the first compact digital camera to feature a built-in projector. With a simple touch of a button, the camera projects photos or movie clips at up to 40 inches in size on any flat surface. Pictures can be projected individually or as slide shows, complete with music and added effects to enhance the experience. Netflix Taps Microsoft PlayReady as Its Primary DRM Technology for Netflix Ready Devices and Applications

REDMOND, Wash., and LOS GATOS, Calif. -- Microsoft Corp. and Netflix Inc. announced that Netflix has selected Microsoft PlayReady technology and the Protected Interoperable File Format (PIFF) for use in new Netflix ready devices and applications. This adoption will enable Netflix members to instantly watch thousands of TV episodes and movies over the Internet on a wide range of new devices -- Internet TVs, Blu-ray disc players, home theater systems, video game consoles and other devices from a broad variety of consumer electronics manufacturers.

Today's agreement, which makes Microsoft PlayReady the primary content protection technology for Netflix partner devices and applications, underscores the benefits of PlayReady as a flexible, reliable and scalable content protection technology. Netflix already deploys PlayReady to enable all instant streaming scenarios on Windows-based PCs and Macs. TED Announces the 2010 TEDGlobal Fellows
