In the first quarter will be released second Acer smartphone based on Android

Company Acer, apparently soon replenish its portfolio of second smartphone based on the platform Android. He will hit the market in the first quarter of this year and will be manufactured by Taiwan's Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision). This was told by Jim Wong (Jim Wong), president of IT-divisions of the company Acer. True, he did not disclose details about the new Android-smartphone. Not even clear what it is called and how it will look.

The only hook can be Wong's assertion that Foxconn was able to efficiently produce even a compact device that was why she was chosen to create a new model for the Acer. Hence we can conclude that the second Android-smartphone Acer will differ little in size, perhaps it will be less than the first smartphone based on this platform - Acer Liquid. And just this year, Acer plans to release five devices running operating system Android.

Google denies leaving China, seeks negotiations

SHANGHAI - Google Inc enters a second week of high stakes brinkmanship with China's government, amid speculation the firm has decided to pull out of the world's biggest Internet market over cyber-spying concerns.

Google, the world's most popular search engine, said last week it was thinking about quitting China after suffering a sophisticated cyber-attack on its network that resulted in theft of its intellectual property.

The company has said it is no longer willing to filter content on its Chinese language google.cn engine, and will try to negotiate a legal unfiltered search engine, or exit the market.

Most of the filters on google.cn were still in place on Sunday, though controls over some searches, including the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, appear to have been loosened.

The Google announcement captured the attention of China's 384 million netizens, the world's largest Internet market by users, with blogs and local media quoting unnamed insiders as saying Google has already decided to close its offices in China.

Google has denied that, saying the company is still in the process of scanning its internal networks since the cyber-attack in mid-December. Google also said it would hold talks with the Chinese government over the next few weeks.

China has tried to play down Google's threat to leave, saying there were many ways to resolve the issue, but insisting all foreign companies, Google included, must abide by Chinese laws.

Washington said it is issuing a diplomatic note to China formally requesting an explanation for the attacks.

The Google issue risks becoming another irritant in China's relationship with the United States, already strained by arguments over the Chinese currency's exchange rate, trade protectionism and U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

Washington has long been worried about Beijing's cyber-spying program. A congressional advisory panel said in November the Chinese government appeared increasingly to be penetrating U.S. computers to gather useful data for its military.

When Google introduced its google.cn website in 2006 with the decision to self-censor searches, it said the move would benefit the Chinese people by expanding access to information.

"We think we have made a reasonable decision, though we cannot be sure it will ultimately be proven to be the best one," a top level Google spokesman told the U.S. Committee on International Relations in 2006.

Google's move to publicly denounce censorship and accuse Chinese hackers of launching an attack that resulted in the theft of its intellectual property was seen as a bold move.

"We have never seen a company take on the Chinese government in such a public and confrontational manner," said James McGregor, senior counselor to public affairs consultancy Apco Worldwide.

But it may backfire as signs emerge the firm has already damaged its prospects in China regardless of whether it carries out its threat to quit the country.

JPMorgan analyst Dick Wei said he thinks Google's relationship with the Chinese government is already strained and if the firm decides to stay, it could be subject to tighter regulations.

UBS analyst Wang Jinjin also believes Google's relationship with advertisers has been damaged as a result of the threat and that they will choose Baidu Inc over the firm.

On Saturday, Yahoo was dragged into the growing row after its Chinese partner Alibaba Group slammed its statements supporting Google.

Playing down the concerns raised by Google, rival Microsoft Corp said it had no plan to pull out of China.

Microsoft has high hopes for its Bing Internet search engine in China, which has only a small share of the market but could benefit if Google, the No. 2 player behind dominating local rival Baidu Inc, pulls out.

Baidu Market Share Slid, but Google Market Share Rose

BEIJING -- Baidu Inc. (Nasdaq: BIDU) and Google China still led the Chinese search engine market in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The market share of Baidu Inc. (Nasdaq: BIDU), the largest Chinese-language Internet search service provider, slid to 58.4% while the market share of Google China climbed to 35.6%, according to a quarterly report by technology, media and telecom (TMT) market researcher Analysys International.

Baidu switched its advertising system in the fourth quarter, which made negative influence on its revenues. In contrast, Google China and Sogou sustained a stable growth trend.

Notably, Taobao.com, a leading online retail marketplace under the aegis of Alibaba Group, came up with an independent search engine, search.taobao.com, in October-December 2009. Taobao.com may turn out to be the most powerful competitor of online search service providers such as Baidu and Google, guessed industry watchers.

In addition, Google's potential departure from China will not be beneficial to the overall development of the market. If Google stops operations in China, Baidu will be the only titan in the market, explained analysts.

Motorola taps Baidu, others for China search

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Motorola Inc is letting consumers in China use Baidu Inc or other rivals as default Web search services instead of Google Inc, on phones using Google's Android operating system.

The announcement on Thursday of a partnership with Google's arch-rival Baidu, China's No. 1 search engine, and Motorola's promise of more search deals, follows Google's threat to exit China due to a cyber attack and censorship dispute.

Motorola also said it is providing an Android app store in China, that it will offer on its own phones and to rival handset makers who can obtain licenses to offer the store.

The moves should alleviate some investor concerns that the Google dispute would hurt the cellphone maker's turnaround effort, which is heavily dependent on Android and selling phones in the fast-growing Chinese cellphone market.

"It takes away the risk that Motorola's success in China is 100 percent tied to Google," said Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt who estimates that Motorola's share of the China mobile phone market has dropped in recent years to about 2 percent from 20 percent.

Christy Wyatt, Motorola's vice president for software and services, said that the company wanted to give consumers choices for search and had been working on providing alternatives for some time.

"In some cases we have either operator customers or individual consumers who are more comfortable with something different. In the case of Baidu its obviously a brand that's very well known in China," Wyatt said.

The executive also said Motorola already provides search options other than Google on Android phones. For example it offers Yahoo search for phones at Latin American provider America Movil.

Microsoft to Launch Zune Phone in Two Months?

Microsoft has long claimed that its mobile strategy is to provide a software solution, not devices. As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told attendees of a McGraw-Hill (MHP) media conference last spring:

“With Windows Mobile, we want to permit a range of hardware innovation, and yet, still have a pretty good experience end-to-end, with good applications, and we want the ability for software developers to target both a very high-end and a lower range or mid-range phone. And the ability to scale up and down, to work with multiple hardware vendors, to get a range of competition and innovation and price competition amongst the hardware guys is a big asset. It is certainly what our strategy is.”

That being the case, it’s intriguing to learn that talk of Microsoft’s (MSFT) long-rumored “Pink” phone project has started up again. In a note to clients today, Jefferies & Company analyst Katherine Egbert claims that Redmond is gearing up to launch a phone based on Windows Mobile 7.

“Our recent industry checks indicate Microsoft will be debuting its own phone sometime in the next two months,” Egbert writes. “We expect the new phone to debut soon, at either the Feb 15-18 Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona Spain, or possibly at CTIA in Las Vegas one month later.”

The device, “a Zune-like phone” according to Egbert–is likely the result of an OEM partnership similar to the one between Google (GOOG) and HTC that produced the Nexus One. She believes it will boast a five-megapixel camera and support 720p HD video and some music subscription/purchasing scheme.

Beyond that, Egbert is at a loss. “We don’t have any information about the cost of the Pink phone, nor do we know what service providers might be partnered with Microsoft,” she explains.

“Revenue from the phone is also very unlikely to be meaningful for many years,” the analyst adds. “However, the new phone might explain why Microsoft has allowed WinMo to dwindle to <10% mobile OS market share. Pink would be the 'third screen' (after Windows and Xbox) and final component in Microsoft's '3 screens and a cloud' strategy."

Google’s Nexus One muzzles the foul-mouthed

One of the most innovative features of Google’s new Nexus One is the built-in voice recognition. But there’s one major limitation that Reuters discovered while putting the smartphone through its paces: the phone is a bit of a prig.

N1Screen1Try uttering a curse word into the Nexus One, and the well-mannered device will automatically replace the offensive expression with a string of # symbols.

Thus, a jocular text message inquiring about a buddy’s whereabouts is transcribed as “Hey #### where are you?” on the Nexus One; A spirited rejoinder to a dubious assertion becomes “that’s bull #### and you know it.”

While perhaps not as politically charged as Google’s censorship of Internet search results in China (a practice Google recently said it will no longer engage in), this restriction of free speech for the foul-mouthed is puzzling, and somewhat inconvenient.

So why the no-curse policy? After all, what business is it of Google’s if a person chooses to be profane in their private communications?

A Google spokeswoman provided a statement suggesting that replacing curses with # symbols aimed less at enforcing etiquette than to ensure that offensive words don’t accidentally appear in transcriptions – a potential concern given the fact that voice recognition technology is still not perfect.

“We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent,” said Google.

“Ultimately our goal is to return results that show exactly what you said, and we’re constantly working to improve the technology to better fit our users’ needs,” the statement continued.

In other words, until the technology improves, you’ll have to be civil, whether you like it or not.

Microsoft's Bach: Linux to Lose Mobile OS Shake-out

Microsoft mobile boss Robbie Bach sees a shake-out in the mobile operating systems business. And while he predicts Linux will be the loser, others are concerned for Windows Mobile, too.

Bach predicted that Linux-based handsets will fail the "quality" test and not gain traction in the market, adding that the number of Linux variants used on handsets--17 by his count--will be subject to pruning by cellular operators.

While most Linux handsets are low-end "feature phones" the OS has recently been making appearances on smartphones as well, including models from Sony Ericsson. Google's Android is also a Linux-based OS.

Some business customers are choosing these as part of a broader strategy of using open source software in their companies.

Bach predicted that carriers will reject some Linux mobile operating systems--he did not offer specific examples--because they complicate support issues. My guess is that Android will pick-up any slack this creates in the marketplace.

As for Bach's own mobile operating system, Windows Mobile has recently experienced up-and-down market share and is seen as vulnerable to competition from Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry devices that offer better feature sets.

Windows Mobile 7, the next generation of Microsoft mobile OS, isn't due until later this year or sometime in 2011, depending on the rumor you believe. This allows competitors time to widen their lead on Microsoft, worsening its outlook.

Bach said Microsoft would talk more about Windows Mobile 7 at the Mobile World Congress, to be held next month in Barcelona.

"I don't think we have some specific challenge outside of the fact that our (user) experience is very skewed towards business users, and it's not as modern as it needs to be," Bach said.

This means business users should expect more options in Windows Mobile handsets, though how much support Windows Mobile 7 will generate remains to be seen.

Bach, a longtime Microsoft exec who also oversees Xbox and Zune, made the statements during a presentation to financial analysts last week at CES.

"I think everybody would say, there are too many operating systems in the mobile world today," Bach said.

"I'm not talking about the smart phone world necessarily, but if you just look across the million, two million, or billion, two billion, feature phones sold today, I don't think there's an operator in the world that wouldn't tell you that it's a pain to support all the different operating systems they have.

"In particular the 17 versions of Linux they have on feature phones, all of which are a little quirky and a little different, require separate network certifications, network product support, and the like that goes along with that.

"I think some of the current systems will fall away. I don't think that will be because there's not room for another operating system. I think it's because their quality bar won't stack up. And they won't get the scale that they need."

Bach said Microsoft's job "is to make sure we get that scale," but refused to speculate on the number of mobile operating systems left standing after some future shake-out.

"I certainly think we're going to be in that list of companies that are successful and then maybe there will be a few others," he concluded.

Microsoft to Mobile Customers: Choice is a Bad Thing (and Linux will Lose)

Last week, David Coursey reported that Microsoft entertainment and devices boss Robbie Bach made the prediction in an analyst briefing that Linux on mobile will lose. Why? It’s choice is a bad thing for customers and that there is too much Linux in the mobile marketplace

By Bach’s count there are 17 variants of Linux available on mobile phones. He sees this as a bad thing for customers. We, unsurprisingly, see this as a bad thing for Microsoft.

Technology markets are shaped by momentum. When a company bets on a technology, it’s not a one-time decision. They must live with that choice for years. Ecosystems around technology are as important as the technology itself, since you need partners and developers to actually make something of it. This is why I take issue with his pronouncement that Linux will not do as well as Microsoft mobile. He may have a point that individual variants of Linux may come and go. We will likely see moves both up and down for specific versions of a mobile OS using Linux. We’ve seen it in the enterprise distribution market.

But Linux as the underlying platform of such mobile offerings as Android, Moblin and many more is growing exponentially, and precisely because it affords this choice. Palm, Motorola and others have jumped ship from Windows Mobile to Linux-based offerings in recent years. LG is now using Android on 50% of its handsets. According to Gartner Group, Windows Mobile’s market share fell to 7.9 percent in the third quarter of 2009 down from 11.1 percent the same quarter of last year.

The problem with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile is not just the technology, it’s the business model. Bach dismissed the recent decline in marketshare Microsoft has been experiencing as “not a business problem per se,” but people I know in the mobile market disagree.

Here’s why:

- With Windows Mobile, carriers and handset manufactuers have to pay Microsoft a per-device charge. With Linux-based platforms this does not exist.

- Windows Mobile has draconian branding and licensing restrictions. Basically Microsoft wants to “own the glass.” With Linux you have a multiple of ways to brand and market your product, making it your product. Linux is the base of many different distributions because of the flexibility it offers.

Is working with Linux more complex than with Windows Mobile? Probably, since with Linux carriers and hand set manufacturers actually have to make a choice in what technology they use and how they brand their products, instead of getting the technology and pricing dictated to them from Redmond. The current consolidation to Linux on mobile is far less complex than just a few years ago when hand set manufacturers had to build from scratch their own OS if they didn’t want to give up a big percentage of their margins to Microsoft. Linux has given them the flexibility they need while making the building of a handset and ecosystem development simpler. Is it more complex than the one size fits all approach of Microsoft? Definitely. But it’s also more profitable.

Android OS Roils Smart Phone Market

Google’s (GOOG) Android mobile operating system was first introduced more than a year ago, and hardly made a ripple in the smart phone market – until now.

ChangeWave’s December 9-14 survey of 4,068 consumers shows the Android operating system roiling the smart phone market, with Motorola’s new Droid smart phone the biggest and most immediate beneficiary.

Among respondents who currently own a smart phone, 4% say they’re using Google’s Android operating system – a 3-pt jump since our survey in September.

But more importantly, 21% of those planning to buy a smart phone in the next 90 days say they’d prefer to have the Android OS on their new phone – a monstrous 15-pt jump in just three months.

To put this in context, three months ago Android OS was tied for last place in consumer preference among the major mobile operating systems. But since then it has surged into second place ahead of all competitors except the iPhone OS X (28%) – which remains the number one choice for operating systems, although down 4-pts from previously.

In contrast to the Google Android surge, the RIM OS (18%; up 1-pt) is holding steady and the Palm OS/ Web OS (3%) and Windows Mobile (6%) are each down 3-pts since the September survey.

These findings have major implications for smart phone manufacturers – but it’s important to note that they are occurring at a time of robust overall growth for the industry.

IDC Says Android Will Be the #2 Mobile Operating System by 2013

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – By 2013, IDC forecasts that worldwide shipments of converged mobile devices, also known as smartphones, will surpass 390 million units, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.9% for the 2009–2013 forecast period. Underpinning the converged mobile device market is the constantly shifting mobile operating system (OS) landscape. In a market that was once dominated by a handful of pioneers, such as BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, newcomers touting open standards (Android) and intuitive design and navigation (Mac OS X and webOS) have garnered strong end-user and handset vendor interest.

"Mobile operating systems have become the key ingredient in the highly competitive mobile device market. Although the overall look and feel of the device will still play an important role in the buying process, the wrong choice of operating system coupled with an awkward user interface can mean the difference between success and failure," says Stephen D. Drake, vice president, Mobility and Telecom.

Key findings from a new IDC market outlook include the following:

* Symbian will retain its leadership position worldwide throughout the forecast period. Due primarily to the strength of Nokia in markets outside of the United States, Symbian continues to lead all other mobile operating systems.

* Android will experience the fastest growth of any mobile operating system. Starting from a very small base of just 690,000 units in 2008, total Android-powered shipments will reach 68.0 million units by 2013, making for a CAGR of 150.4%. Android will benefit from having a growing footprint of handset vendors supporting it and will finish second to Symbian in shipments by 2013.

* Linux and webOS shipments will struggle throughout the forecast period. Shipments of Linux-powered devices will trend down due to greater emphasis on the Android platform but will not disappear entirely as some vendors will continue to support it. Palm's webOS, despite growing steadily, will capture limited market share due to limited deployment and availability of devices across multiple carriers.

The recently published IDC study, Worldwide Mobile OS 2009-2013 Forecast and Analysis (IDC #220733), reviews each of the major mobile operating systems, including drivers, opportunities, and potential challenges. The report also profiles the principal high-level operating systems (HLOS) platforms and features an updated market share forecast through 2013.

Nokia supports Red Bull Stratos mission to the edge of space with exclusive app

STRATOSPHERE, Planet Earth – Nokia has announced its support for a pioneering new project by Red Bull, that will see one man undertake a record-breaking free-fall jump from the edge of space. Later this year the Red Bull Stratos mission will see world famous skydiver Felix Baumgartner step out of a balloon capsule 23 miles above the Earth’s surface in an attempt to be the first human to break the sound barrier, accelerating over 35-seconds to Mach 1 speed – that’s about 690mph! Why? To see how the body reacts to such speeds and to gather unique medical and scientific data that will help future pioneers and developments pushing new frontiers.

The project neatly resonates with Nokia’s ethos towards research and innovation. So much so that Nokia stepped aboard as the official global mobile sponsor, and has now released an exclusive free Red Bull Stratos app (pictured) via the Ovi Store that will let you follow every step of the Stratos mission from anywhere via your mobile. Read on to get the full lowdown on this landmark project.

It’s been almost 50 years since a mission of this nature has been embarked upon – back in 1960, Colonel Joseph Kittinger performed a similar record-breaking free-fall jump from 19 miles above the Earth’s surface. And one of the great things about this mission is that he’s part of the team supporting Felix in his upcoming attempt to break the sound barrier in free-fall. To give you an understanding of how tough a challenge this truly is, skydivers typically reach a top speed of around 120mph – Felix will be attempting to shoot towards Earth six times faster. Supersonic. Alongside Colonel Kittinger, the Stratos mission sees Felix supported by a world-class team of leading scientists and specialists in aerospace technologies and medicine.

Red-bull-stratos-Nokia-2Part of supporting the mission has seen the release of an exclusive free Red Bull Stratos app through the Ovi Store. Download the bite-size sliver of software to your device and you’ll be able to follow the latest news, updates and scientific facts as preparations are made for the jump – including videos and photos from the mission. You’ll be able to watch live video of the jump streamed to your phone when the mission takes place, as well as keep track of Felix’s pulse as live biometrical data will also be fed live to your handset.

MyDailyApp highlights – Celebrity Tweets, ReMo Recorder and Nokia Energy Profiler

GLOBAL - As Ovi Store matures, one of the key themes that is increasingly emerging is diversity. Apps now come in all shapes and sizes, and cater for every mobile need.

Take this week’s trio from MyDailyApp.com – all have a very different agenda, but all three do their job superbly to add new levels of versatility to your favourite Nokia.

Don’t forget that if this weekly helping of three Ovi apps isn’t enough, you can get your fix daily by heading directly to MyDailyApp.com itself.

How many of you like a bit of juicy celeb gossip? More than are willing to admit, we’d bet. Well, thanks to Celebrity Tweets, you can keep your little secret between you and your Nokia. It puts a star-roll of 1,000 celebs right at your fingertips, from actors and musicians to athletes and politicians.

Virtually stalking your favourites is as simple as adding their names to your personal Favorites from the five category list, and while you don’t have the ability to spread the word yourself via retweet, it’s a simple app that will keep your Symbian S60 series 5 phone in the loop, and costs $1.99 /£1.50 to download from Ovi Store.

Now onto something far more practical – ReMo Recorder. It does a simple job, namely letting you record and label conversations, but it does it well, and adds plenty more power if you go looking for it.

You can record memos, calls or conference calls, making it equally useful as a personal memo-taker or a full-blown business meeting recorder. Better still, should you upgrade from the free two-week trial version, the full app lets you record video calls and store recordings online.

The ReMo Recorder trial version is available for all S60 3rd and 5th edition handsets, and should you like what you see, the $6.99 / £6.00 full version is also on Ovi Store.

Understanding how your device uses power might not be something you want to know everyday, but when you do, Nokia Energy Profiler is designed to tell you.

This handy app gives you a visual representation of your phone’s power use as it goes about its business, with available graphs including power use, current, voltage and processor load so you can see just where your phone is sapping its power supply.

Useful, yes, but when seen in a developer context it’s closer to invaluable, letting you track exactly where your app needs streamlining to reduce its impact on power use.

Best of all, it’s completely free to download and works with Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition phones.

PUSH N900 Mod in the USA challenge

USA – Over the last few months five teams of hackers, who had been chosen from hundreds of entrants, have been working to make the N900 do stuff it wasn’t intended to do. The idea? Simply show how powerful the device is through the medium of hacking. And having fun. Now the folks at PUSH N900 have moved the competition stateside, with a brand new “Mod in the USA” twist. Interested? Read on to find out more.

The initial project brought teams together from all over the world. Now the PUSH folks are looking to see what teams from the USA can come up with. Modders have a little over two weeks to get an entry together and submitted (deadline is Feb 15, 2010) after which a panel of judges will select the best three. What makes it even more worthwhile is that a representative from each of the three finalists will be flown to CTIA in March to present their idea. There, judges will determine the pecking order, deciding on a winner, second place and third place positions. The prize? $10,000 for the winner, $5,000 for second and $3,000, for third.

So what do you need to do? Firstly, gather your team and get your submission together. Meeting the requirements should be first on your checklist (connect the N900 and Maemo to something you love, the idea should be innovative and visually appealing – will it work on YouTube?). Your team needs to be able to make this happen, so choose your cohorts wisely. Of course the PUSH community is there to help too, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. But you’ll need to carry out the bulk of the work required to make this happen.

The ideas need to be brilliantly innovative if you’re to stand a chance of making the finalist places. Think long and hard about it and then compile a crystal clear submission (no more than 1,000 words for the elevator pitch). You can also upload details of your teammates and images, links to videos and project documents as part of your submission. The more thorough you are, the better your chances I reckon.

The Brand New Nokia N900

WATFORD, England -- The N900 (http://www.mobiles.co.uk/nokia-n900.html) is the first handset by Nokia to run on the Maemo operating System.

The Maemo OS allows for multi-tasking, and the user can customise their homepage with widgets, shortcuts and applications, and new apps can be downloaded from Maemo Select, which is a dedicated store for the Maemo OS.

This handset is capable of operating at very fast speeds due to a 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and 1GB application memory. This results in the ability to run multiple applications without the performance of the N900 being affected. Users can be reassured that the N900 will always work to its best potential.

A 3.5 inch WVGA touchscreen is hosted by the Nokia N900, which provides sharp and vibrant colours resulting in very detailed images on screen. The touchscreen is very responsive with the use of your finger, and an accelerometer is built in which changes the screen depending on how the phone is being held. A proximity sensor is also on board, which puts the display on standby when the user is on a call.

A slide out QWERTY keyboard makes composing emails, texts and other messages a lot easier for users. Another advantage of this handset is that the N900 organises messages from multiple channels so that they appear as one conversation.

Connect the Nokia N900 to a Local Wireless Network to get internet access. This is an easy method to keep in touch by email, and to stay up to date with all your favourite websites.

A Mozilla technology powered web browser means you can access the internet from the N900 mobile and the page will look exactly as it does on a PC. Videos and other interactive applications can run smoothly on the handset thanks to Adobe Flash 9.4.

HSDPA connection, otherwise known as mobile broadband, allows speeds up to 10 Mbps which is a similar speed to that of home broadband. Web browsing and downloads can now be done a lot quicker which is ideal for users with a very busy lifestyle.

The built in 5.0 megapixel camera offers a lot of quality features to ensure a fantastic photo is always captured. Autofocus, LED Flash and a Carl Zeiss Lens all contribute to the success of the image, making this a feature of the N900 that you can't get enough of. Share your photos with your friends either by email or upload them onto blogs. To remember those special moments, geo-tagging allows you to write when and where your photos were taken, and any other relevant information you wish. If you want more than just a photo, use the video capture facility that records 25 frames per second.

A massive 32GB memory ensures enough room to store all of your music, movies, photos and videos to look back at. If this isn't enough, an expandable memory of 16GB is available through use of the microSD card, taking the total memory up to a potential 48GB.

A-GPS can locate your position up to 100m by using a technique called triangulation. By sending a signal to three cell masts, A-GPS will work out your location by the location of the cells and your distance from them. This is a very handy tool to use if you want reassurance on your travels.

NEWARK, Calif. -- Applied Seals North America, Inc., a premier supplier of perfluoroelastomer sealing components, has expanded its worldwide network by signing Korean distributor Zeus Co., Ltd. to provide local sales and applications support. Applied Seals' o-rings and other sealing products are critical components used by customers in the semiconductor, flat panel display, solar and other ultraclean manufacturing industries.

This new partnership in Korea further expands Applied Seals' international market presence, following previously announced signings of distributors in Europe and Israel.

"Zeus is already working closely with many customers in semiconductor-processing applications where Applied Seals' products can be used," said Dalia Vernikovsky, president and general manager of Applied Seals North America. "Their expert working knowledge of customers' needs involving ultraclean environments will be invaluable as we work together to help Korea's microelectronics companies improve their manufacturing cost efficiencies with the optimal sealing solution for each application."

Zeus has 30 years of experience providing Korea's semiconductor industry with manufacturing systems such as cryopumps and vacuum-measurement equipment, which use sealing components. Among Zeus' customers throughout Korea are Samsung Electronics, Samsung LCD, Samsung Mobile Display, Samsung LED, Hynix Semiconductor, Dongbu Hi-Tek, Fairchild Semiconductor Korea, LG Display and several Korean original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

"We have an established reputation and in-place service capabilities with all major users of vacuum components," said D. J. Choi, executive director of Zeus. "These same companies also are consumers of vacuum seals and need a reliable supply chain with fast delivery times, which we are uniquely qualified to provide."

Zeus' organization includes approximately 280 employees within several business groups, including its Vacuum Technology Division. This division's experienced application engineers, field customer service engineers and sales engineers are handling Applied Seals' products.

Executive director D. J. Choi has been with Zeus since 1987, when he began his career in the semiconductor industry as a field service and sales engineer. He now leads the Vacuum Technology Division at Zeus. He also is a guest lecturer registered at Samsung, where he conducts several training courses on high-vacuum equipment.

AT&T Makes it Easy and Affordable to Stay Wirelessly Connected During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver

Planning a trip to British Columbia to support Team USA™? With the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver just a few weeks away, AT&T* is reminding customers of the availability ofwireless rate plans that can save customers money while using voice or data services in Canada as well as offering helpful wireless tips to ensure a golden experience abroad.

Rate Plan Options
AT&T offers several voice and data plans that can save customers money while using voice or data services in Canada.

For talkers: For $4.99 per month, the AT&T Canada plan is a great add-on for customers who anticipate frequent calls from Canada to the United States or vice versa. AT&T Canada gives customers low per-minute calling rates when calling from the United States on their mobile phones to any wireline or wireless number in Canada ($0.09 per minute), or when placing wireless calls while traveling in Canada ($0.59 per minute).

For data users: For customers who like to surf the web or check email, AT&T offers Data Global Add-Onpackages, which can save customers money on roaming and data usage in more than 90 countries, including Canada. For example, the 20 MB Data Global Add-On gives provides 20 MB of data usage for $24.99. The rate plans are available for select devices, including smartphones, quick messaging phones and touch screen phones. For more information on device availability and other plan details, visit www.att.com/global. For Data Global Add-On see www.att.com/dataterms. Additionally, folks who are no strangers to Canada may find value in the AT&T Nation with Canada plan. Subscribers enjoy benefits such as no international long distance charges on wireless calls between the United States and Canada. Nation with Canada plans start at $59.99 per month and feature Anytime and 1,000 Nights and Weekend Minutes for use in the United States and Canada, as well as Anytime Minutes with Rollover®. Additional charges apply. See below.†Data usage is charged at a pay-per-use rate of $2/MB.

And for even greater flexibility, customers with Wi-Fi enabled smartphones, laptops, and other mobile devices can purchase an AT&T Wi-Fi Premier plan for only $19.99 per month, allowing wireless Internet connectivity through roaming agreements across the globe, including at more than 96 hotspots in British Columbia and 36 in the Vancouver area. Visit www.attwifi.com for more details and a list of AT&T Wi-Fi and roaming hotspots. Look for the roaming login instructions at each location for more details. One year term required, early termination fees apply.

For all plans, activation, fees, taxes and other charges apply. For more information about either of these voice plans or AT&T’s affordable international data packages, visit www.att.com/global.

International Wireless Tips
Whether traveling to Vancouver or Venezuela, if you’re leaving the United States, AT&T recommends the following tips to ensure the most optimal wireless experience while abroad:

* Verify service is available in the country you are visiting and that your phone will work. AT&T provides voice coverage in more than 215 countries and data coverage in more than 190 countries – more than any other carrier. AT&T also offers voice and data coverage on more than 130 cruise ships. Visitwww.att.com/travelguide to verify service is available as well as to determine if your wireless device has the frequency and wireless technology needed at your travel destination. A GSM quad-band phone (that works on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies) provides the widest coverage internationally. Most AT&T phones in stores today are quad-band. For travel to Japan or South Korea, your phone must operate on 3G technology at 2100 MHz; AT&T offers a good selection of these devices as well.
* Make sure international service is activated on your account. International services must be activated on your account before traveling abroad, so give AT&T a call to verify (800-331-0500).
* Consider adding an international voice or data package. AT&T offers several voice plans and data packages to make traveling with your AT&T wireless phone affordable. For example, for just $5.99 a month, you can enjoy discounted roaming rates in over 85 countries with AT&T World Traveler. AT&T also offers several data add-on packages for international use. Visit www.att.com/global for more details on AT&T’s affordable world packages.
* Know how to dial. Familiarize yourself with international dialing. From your AT&T mobile phone, you can typically hold down the “0” key until the “+” sign appears, then dial the country code and the phone number (the country code for the United States is “1”). For example, a call to the U.S. could be placed by dialing +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Print the Quick Reference Guide and carry it with you.
* Know how to make an emergency call. The 911 emergency number is unique to the U.S. In many European countries, the emergency number for police, fire, or ambulance is 112. Otherwise, emergency numbers will vary by country.
* Familiarize yourself with international roaming rates. Calls placed while roaming internationally will appear on your regular wireless bill. Sometimes charges for international usage take several weeks to process and appear on your bill. For countries available and rates, visit www.att.com/global.If you are an iPhone customer, you can find tips for keeping your international data bill predictable at www.att.com/wirelesstraveltips.
* Know how to access voice mail. When roaming outside the U.S., most phones allow you to reach voice mail by holding down the 1 key. If you are unable to reach voice mail this way, dial your own wireless number (inserting a +1 before the number) and press the * key during the voice mail greeting. You will need to know your voice mail password. Calls to voice mail when roaming internationally are billed at international roaming rates.
* Keep phone turned off or in airplane mode when not in use to avoid international roaming charges. When your device is turned on, calls that you do not answer are routed to the AT&T voicemail system and charged as an international roaming incoming call to your device. However, if your device is turned off or in flight mode and the wireless network is off, when someone tries to call you the network does not try to deliver the call to you in a foreign country and instead the call will go directly to your personal voicemail greeting and there will be no international roaming charges.
* Take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots. Wi-Fi is another way to get online from your Wi-Fi enabled smartphone, laptop or other device while traveling. When planning your trip, identify Wi-Fi hotspots along your route, or find out if your hotel and nearby locations offer Wi-Fi. For a list of locations, visit www.att.com/attwifi/locations.
* Be familiar with local laws. In some countries, using a wireless phone while driving is prohibited. Contact the local tourist information office for regulations that may apply.
* Contact International Customer Care. Contact AT&T’s specialized international help desk if you have problems or questions while roaming outside the U.S. by calling +1-916-843-4685, which is a free call from your wireless phone.

AT&T also offers specific tips for iPhone and Laptop users to help keep wireless bills predictable. For more information on these and more helpful international tips from AT&T, visit www.att.com/global.

†AT&T imposes: a Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge of up to $1.25 to help defray costs incurred in complying with obligations and charges imposed by State and Federal telecom regulations; State and Federal Universal Service charges; and surcharges for government assessments on AT&T. These fees are not taxes or government-required charges.

International Roaming and Dialing - Special credit & tenure restrictions & additional charges may apply. Calling to and from certain countries may be blocked and changed without notice. See wireless.att.com/global for updated countries, rates, charges & full terms & conditions. International Dialing: Airtime or roaming charges are in addition to long distance charges. International Roaming: Requires compatible device. Availability, quality of coverage and services while roaming are not guaranteed. International data roaming can get expensive quickly as international roaming rates apply. Voice and data usage, including data usage incurred from delivery of Visual Voicemail messages, will be charged at international rates. For a complete list of countries visit att.com/dataconnectglobal and rates visit att.com/worldpackages.

20 MB Data Global Add-On gives you 20 MB of usage within over 90 countries for $24.99/month. Overage rate is $0.005/KB within the over 90 discounted countries. Rate outside these discounted countries is $0.0195/KB. Does not include data usage within the U.S. Qualified domestic plan required. Other restrictions and terms and conditions apply for data.

Nation with Canada:
Calls made from or received in Canada do not qualify as Mobile to Mobile Minutes.

Unused Rollover Minutes expire after the 12th billing period of the month minutes have been accumulated. Night and Weekend and Mobile to Mobile Minutes not included.

Calls made from or received in Canada cannot exceed your monthly roaming allowance (the lesser of 750 minutes per month or 40 percent of your Anytime Minutes per month) in any two consecutive months.

Certain eligibility requirements apply. See terms at www.att.com/planterms.
