First look at Nokia C6

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Mobile-review have posted a preview of the new Nokia C6. Here is their final impression.

Being a Nokia device, signal reception, audio quality and call stability are never a problem and this phone is no exception.

Having a single speaker does mean that the maximum volume is a little distorted and being a little louder wouldn't hurt too.

The phone's vibration on the other hand is more that powerfull, in fact "aided" by the phone's mediocre build quality it will also produce a "sqweeaky" sound along with the strong feeling that leaves.

Adobe AIR on the Android Platform

Partnerships have been at the very heart of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive mobile platform, since we first introduced it with the Open Handset Alliance. Through close relationships with carriers, device manufacturers, developers, and others, Google is working to enable an open ecosystem for the mobile world by creating a standard, open mobile software platform. Today we're excited that, working with Adobe, we will be able to bring both AIR and Flash to Android.

Google believes that developers should have their choice of tools and technologies to create applications. By supporting Adobe AIR on Android we hope that millions of creative designers and developers will be able to express themselves more freely when they create applications for Android devices. More broadly, AIR will foster rapid and continuous innovation across the mobile ecosystem.

Google is happy to be partnering with Adobe to bring the full web, great applications, and developer choice to the Android platform. Our engineering teams have been working closely to bring both AIR and Flash Player to Google's mobile operating system and devices. The Android platform is enjoying great adoption, and we expect our work with Adobe will help that growth continue.

We also look forward to all the innovative content and applications created for Android and Flash. Join us at Google I/O in May to learn more about our work together with Adobe to open up the world of Flash on mobile devices.

Search by Voice Comes to Google Maps 4.1 for Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 phones

We understand that typing on phones isn’t as easy or fast as talking into them. As a result, we’re big fans of letting you search in Google Maps for mobile in the most natural way possible -- with your voice! Not wanting the BlackBerry and Android folks to have all the fun, today we’re happy to announce Search by voice in Google Maps 4.1 on Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 phones.

Search by voice lets you easily search for anything by simply speaking your search terms instead of typing them. Just open Google Maps, press your phone’s “call” button, and clearly speak your search term like “Park Plaza.” Search by voice works with all the kinds of searches Google Maps for mobile already supports, including places, addresses (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway), specific businesses (The French Laundry), or types of businesses (sushi restaurants new york).

You may also notice a few other additions, including a redesigned settings page with Search by voice language choices. Choose your preferred language from the supported options, including multiple English accents and Mandarin Chinese. Also, if you find a problem with any information in Google Maps, you can use the “Report a problem” option to let us know.

To get started, install the latest version of Google Maps for mobile 4.1 for Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 by going to m.google.com/maps in your phone’s standard web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile). This update is available in all the countries and languages where Google Maps for mobile is currently available.

Girl Scouts, Chicago Sky, Motorola Partner to Lead Environmental Efforts

Girl Scouts urge community participation starting on April 22, Earth Day.

CHICAGO -- This spring Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is partnering with the WNBA's Chicago Sky and Motorola to give girls an even greater voice on issues that significantly impact the environment.

On April 22, (Earth Day), the Girl Scouts Forever Green Community Action Project will kick-off with a series of social media campaigns, public service announcements and media outreach to encourage the community to take action to protect the environment. The initiative will culminate with the Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival with the Chicago Sky at the Allstate Arena on June 5.

During the six-week campaign, Forever Green "change agents," who are community members who want to inspire others, will be challenged to collect as many cell phones and batteries as possible. Their stories and progress will be tracked through various social media resources. Girls, their families, friends and the community-at-large will have the opportunity to learn about the impact of improperly discarded cell phones and batteries on the environment. Even more, three local Girl Scouts are hosting a Forever Green Blog (www.chicagonow.com/blogs/forever-green/), to educate the public on the importance of environmental issues in Chicago, and offering ways the public can make an impact on various levels.

"This is such an important issue not only for our generation, but for generations to come," explained Girl Scout Joanne Dynak, 15, a Forever Green blogger from Harwood Heights. "We're proud to be part of this national movement, and can't wait to motivate others in our area – school groups, families and other community members – to make changes in our everyday choices that impact the environment."

Throughout the initiative, Girl Scout troops will showcase their own Forever Green recycling projects through local events across the Chicago and northwest Indiana area.

"Our Girl Scouts are taking action on the issues that are important to them. As the pre-eminent leadership organization for girls, that is exactly what we expect them to do. Role modeling environmentally responsible behavior and encouraging others to follow their lead is one way girls are making the world a better place. We're proud to partner with the Chicago Sky and Motorola in supporting girl leadership and the environment," said Maria Wynne, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

The Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival at Allstate Arena on June 5 will serve as the capstone event of the campaign. Forever Green "change agents" will bring the cell phones and batteries they've collected for recycling or proper disposal. Registration for the Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival – which includes a registration packet, admittance to the Forever Green Rally with complimentary food, beverage and music, and one ticket to the Chicago Sky "Go Green" game – is $20. The Chicago Sky has generously agreed to donate $5 to the Girl Scouts for every Festival registrant. Radio Disney, a Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival partner, will launch the Girl Scouts Forever Green Sweepstakes at the Festival, where attendees will be eligible to win fun prizes.

"Our entire professional sports organization and all our women athletes are thrilled to partner with the Girl Scouts on this environmentally focused community action project. Both organizations strongly support girls and women who take on leadership roles in their communities, especially to affect significant change as this initiative does," said Margaret Stender, President and CEO, Chicago Sky.

As a key Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival corporate partner, Motorola will provide cell phone recycling boxes at the festival. "We are thrilled to be a Girl Scouts Forever Green partner. Motorola is committed to designing environmentally friendly products and to educating the public about the importance of recycling discarded cell phones and batteries," said Bill Olson, Director of the Office of Sustainability and Stewardship for Motorola Mobile Devices. Recycled phones, when refurbished and reused, can provide affordable communications to people and communities around the world."

For more information and to register for the Girl Scouts Forever Green Festival, visit www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org. or follow the blog posts about this initiative written by three teen Girl Scouts at www.chicagonow.com/blogs/forever-green/.

Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana impacts the lives of nearly 95,000 girls and 24,000 adult members in 245 communities in six Illinois counties (Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Lake, and Will) and four Indiana counties (Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Porter). Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

Africans in U.S. Embracing Smartphones, New Study Reports

SAN FRANCISCO -- iPhone is the favorite among Egyptians in the U.S., while Ugandans here favor the BlackBerry. Samsung and Nokia phones tie for first preference among Sierra Leoneans living in America, and the Zambians dig Nokias.

Those findings and more come from a just-released study of international calling habits and preferences among Africans living in the U.S., provided by the Internet phone company, Rebtel (http://www.rebtel.com).

* Saturdays and Sundays are the days that most Africans abroad call home, although Zambians prefer Saturdays, while Sunday is more popular among Egyptians, Ugandans and Sierra Leoneans.
* The largest number of calls from the U.S. to Egypt, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia originate in primarily Eastern and Mid-western states.
* The vast majority of calls go to mobile phones in Africa vs. landlines.

Among the survey respondents, 73.2% of calls are to family, 16.1% are to friends, and only 9.6% call business associates at home.

Top Three U.S. States Calling:

* Egypt: New York, New Jersey, California
* Sierra Leone: Maryland, California, Washington D.C.
* Uganda: Minnesota, Massachusetts, Texas
* Zambia: Ohio, Illinois, Maryland

Of the Africans participating in the survey, 65.4 % said Rebtel call quality was noticeably better than other phone services for calling family abroad; 79.7% said Rebtel was easier to use. And well over half – 61.8% – said Rebtel rates consistently beat the competition.

Starting this month Rebtel, which works with any carrier or phone, cut its calling rates to a handful of African nations.

"There is absolutely no need to pay traditional carriers' crazy rates when you want to talk to your family back home," said Andreas Bernstrom, Rebtel CEO. "Nor do you have to risk getting ripped off by calling cards. Just say, 'No' to the old way of calling, and give Rebtel a try."

Founded in 2006, Stockholm-based Rebtel was established to give people around the world an alternative to mobile operators' rip-off rates for making international calls. Today, thousands of Africans living in the U.S. use Rebtel every day to call family at home.

ABC Interactive Working with Verve Wireless to Provide Independently Verified Mobile Publishing Statistics

Newspapers Can Include App, E-Reader, and Mobile Web Data in ABC's Consolidated Media Report.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. and SAN DIEGO -- With use of mobile media growing dramatically, the Audit Bureau of Circulations' interactive unit, ABCi, announced it is teaming with Verve Wireless to audit newspapers' mobile content delivered via the Verve publishing platform. As a result, ABCi is now able to provide newspaper publishers and advertisers with independently verified mobile usage data generated from apps, e-readers, and mobile browsers.

A growing number of newspapers are using ABC's Consolidated Media Report (CMR) to detail the reach and breadth of their multimedia advertising channels, including mobile platforms. Now publishing clients of Verve can report on their CMRs such measurements as:

* Mobile audience by device type
* Mobile audience by day and day part
* Audience access points (app, mobile browser, e-reader)
* Unique visitors
* Page views

Verve Wireless is a leading provider of mobile publishing and advertising technologies to local media companies. It works with more than 600 newspaper publishers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. According to Verve:

* It anticipates serving more than 2.2 billion mobile news pages in 2010.
* Mobile advertising revenues have grown across Verve's network of media partners 30 percent each month since November.
* In March, more than 160 million mobile news pages were served, a 214 percent increase year over year.
* More than nine million readers accessed news from mobile devices via Verve's mobile publishing platform in March, representing a 243 percent increase compared to the prior year.
* More than four million of its mobile news apps have been downloaded to devices like the iPhone®, iPad®, Blackberry®, Nokia, and Windows smartphones.

"It's clear that mobile represents the next generation of publishing," said Art Howe, CEO of Verve Wireless. "In order for advertisers to have confidence in the medium, there has to be accountability and verifiable usage statistics. ABC's interactive audit services are ideally suited to audit user data across all mobile technology platforms, all devices and all networks."

According to a 2009 ABC survey on the mobile publishing market, more than 80 percent of respondents said consumers would rely more heavily on mobile devices as a primary information source in the next three years. Nearly 70 percent agreed that mobile was receiving more attention at their publication, with one third convinced that mobile would have a significant revenue impact within three years.

"With all the buzz around the iPad and with use of mobile browsers exploding, newspapers and their advertisers are increasingly interested in seeing mobile metrics detailed in ABC reports," said Michael Lavery, ABC president and managing director. "We're pleased to be working with Verve to provide a valuable new audit service to our members in the U.S. and Canada."
