GSmart Android handset 'fake'!

GSmart Fake! Last week a few pictures of a new Gigabyte GSmart handset surfaced, claiming to be GSmart's first Android powered smartphone offering. I was pretty pleased to see these images as they seemed to support my prediction that we'd see an Android handset sometime this year and this was earlier than I would have expected. We reported the news of the new GSmart handset as did a lot of other sites at the time.

However, yesterday I had a long conversation with my good friend over at GSmart. She is the GSmart PR guru based over in Taiwan. We spoke for a while about upcoming handsets etc. and she confirmed to me that the images and specs we all reported last week are fakes, they aren't anything to do with GSmart.

She went on to say that the next few handsets to be released by GSmart will run Windows Mobile and although there will be an Android OS handset from them at some point it would not be until later in 2010 at the earliest and the prototypes they are working on at the moment look nothing like the fake images in circulation. GSmart have promised to keep me informed and will let me know when they are able to confirm specs of both the new Windows Mobile handsets and the Android one.

Perhaps a bit of a shame that we'll have to wait a while to see what GSmart can do with Android but I'm not disappointed to learn the the images we have are fakes and I thought the handset looked pretty naff and dated!

iPad Parts May Yield Tidy Profits for Apple

Apple's recently launched iPad could yield a tidy profit for the company thanks to its relatively low cost for parts, if an analysis of the components proves accurate.

According to BroadPoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall, the low-end $499 version of the new tablet costs about $270 in materials and manufacturing.

Marshall concluded the most expensive piece in the iPad's bill of materials (BOM) is the 9.7-inch touch-sensitive display, which he put at $100. Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) most profitable item, meanwhile, is the 3G radio: Models carrying the unit cost $130 more than those without, while it only costs the company $16.

The total BOM for the 16GB WiFi-only iPad is $270.50, plus a $10 line item dedicated to manufacturing and another $20 set aside for warranty service costs. The 16GB of memory and the aluminum case are estimated to cost about $25 each, while the Apple A4 processor chip is put at $15.

Profitability appears to scale up as the lineup increases in capacity, since the 32GB and 64GB iPads only see their costs rise another $25.50 and $76.50, respectively, but their suggested prices go up $100 and $200.

The 3G iPad provides a bigger margin at every price point than does the same memory configuration in a WiFi-only device. The 32GB, $599 WiFi-only iPad costs Apple $316, yielding a margin of 48.1 percent. With a 64GB device, the iPad costs $332 but has a $729 price tag, giving Apple a margin of 55.1 percent.

Marshall is estimating, of course. A clearer idea of Apple's real costs won't be known until the device arrives and can be dissected by analysts in the popular "teardown" ritual. But if his estimates are anywhere near accurate, it's clear that the iPad will yield tidy profits for Apple.

As a result, Marshall is raising his estimates for Apple unit sales and earnings.

"It was not until we actually used the iPad for about 15 minutes were we convinced this will be another grand slam product for Apple," Marshall wrote in his research note. "The ergonomics and the 'media' experience of the device (i.e. Internet browsing, e-reading and watching videos on the 9.7-inch screen) stood out the most to us."

He had originally estimated that Apple would sell 2.2 million units in 2010, but now believes sales will be an order of magnitude higher, with a corresponding impact on Apple's earnings. If Apple sells seven million units, calendar year earnings per share (EPS) would rise from $12 to more than $13.

Marshall has Apple rated a "buy" with a target price on its stock of $264 -- but Apple is a long way from that level. In the post-iPad launch hangover, Apple's stock has been pummeled. It peaked at $213 on Tuesday, the day before the announcement, but at press time trades at $194, losing ground all last week following the announcement.

Symbian Open-Sources Smartphone Platform

The Symbian Foundation has announced its completion of the open-sourcing of the Symbian Platform with the release of Symbian 3.

On Feb. 4, Symbian Foundation officials said the organization had successfully completed the open-source release of the source code for the Symbian Platform, which has become the world’s most widely used smartphone operating system.

Indeed, the Symbian Platform, which has been developed over 10 years and has shipped in more than 330 million devices around the world, is now completely open and the source code is available for free under the EPL (Eclipse Public License).

Initially, the foundation projected that its effort to open-source the Symbian Platform would take until June of 2010, but the team was able to beat that mark by four months.

“We are pleased to see the release of such a significant code contribution under the Eclipse Public License," said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, in a statement. "The rate at which the Symbian Foundation has worked to make its platform fully open has been very impressive."

In an interview with eWEEK about the move, Larry Berkin, director of Global Alliances at the Symbian Foundation, said he believes the effort to open-source the Symbian source code was the biggest open-source migration project ever.

Berkin said any individual or organization can now take, use and modify the code for any purpose, whether for a mobile device or for something else entirely.

Ultimately, Berkin said this strategic move provides the Symbian ecosystem with greater potential for innovation, faster time-to-market and the opportunity to develop on the platform for free. Symbian’s commitment to openness also includes transparency in future plans, including the publication of the platform roadmap and planned features up to and including 2011. The Symbian Foundation already is at work on Symbian 4, the next major version of the platform, and has begun sharing the road map for that, Berkin said.

However, analysts note that Symbian will face increasing competition from the likes of Apple, Google's Android, Palm, Microsoft and Research In Motion. In fact, IDC predicts that the Android platform will move into second place in the market behind Symbian by 2013.

In a statement, Lee Williams, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, said: “The development community is now empowered to shape the future of the mobile industry, and rapid innovation on a global scale will be the result. When the Symbian Foundation was created, we set the target of completing the open-source release of the platform by mid-2010 and it’s because of the extraordinary commitment and dedication from our staff and our member companies that we’ve reached it well ahead of schedule.”

"It's ahead of schedule and that can be attested to the open forum," said Berkin of the development process the Symbian Foundation has adopted.

"It's increasingly important for smartphone platforms to offer developers something unique," said John Delaney, an analyst with IDC. "The placing into open source of the world's most widely used smartphone platform emphatically fits that bill. It will be exciting to see where this takes the industry."

Despite maintaining a leadership position in terms of smartphone platform market share, the Symbian Platform has not been as successful in the United States as it has been in the rest of the world, particularly in emerging markets. However, the foundation is working to change that.

Berkin acknowledged that that have been some missteps earlier in the efforts to tap the U.S. market, but that the foundation sees the United States as a major opportunity. Additionally, "The U.S. is a focus for a lot of our partners," he said.

In a statement, Peter Ropke, senior vice president of Devices R&D at Nokia, said: “Nokia congratulates the Symbian Foundation on the completion of its platform migration to full open source well ahead of schedule – a significant milestone for the Symbian platform, the foundation and the entire mobile industry. With this achievement, the world’s most popular smartphone platform is available in its entirety for developers around the world to innovate on and contribute to, enabling new opportunities for engagement and monetization. For Nokia, this truly open platform environment brings the promise of exciting new user experiences for our Symbian-based smartphones.”

All 108 packages containing the source code of the Symbian platform can now be downloaded from Symbian’s developer Website under the terms of the EPL and other open-source licenses.

Also available for download are the development kits for creating applications, known as the Symbian Developer Kit, and the kit for mobile devices, known as the Product Development Kit. These kits are compatible with Symbian 3, the very latest version of the platform, which is now fully open source and will be feature complete during the first quarter of 2010.

Acer Liquid review: Android breed

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Acer Liquid. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and final impression.

Key features:
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
* 3G with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps
* Android OS v1.6 with Acer UI 3.0
* 3.5" capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution
* Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 768 MHz CPU, 256 MB RAM
* 5 megapixel autofocus camera with video recording
* Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and GPS receiver
* Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and turn-to-mute
* Digital compass
* Standard miniUSB port for charging and data
* Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)
* microSD card slot with support for up to 16GB cards (2GB one included)
* Standard 3.5mm audio jack
* Direct access to the official Android Market

Main disadvantages:
* Camera lacks flash or lens cover, has outdated features
* No smart dialing, no voice dialing, no video calling
* No web Flash support
* Acer UI 3.0 offers only minor changes to the original interface
* Somewhat limited 3rd party software availability
* No DivX or XviD video support or a third-party application to play that
* Poor MP4 playback performance - any videos over QVGA res are barely watchable
* No proper file manager out of the box
* No TV-out port
* No FM radio

Acer did a good job of the Liquid. A novice in phones, the company deservedly stands next to makers with obviously better track record like HTC and Samsung. The Liquid surely isn't the heavily customized device HTC would usually offer, but the hot looks and reasonable price tag leave no room for complaints.

Android-powered devices have long made their case and they all look alike on the inside. But design is the distinctive feature and Acer did well to make the best of it. The result is quite obvious - a beautiful and stylish smartphone that will stand out among its rivals. The Android OS runs smoothly inside thanks to the powerful Snapdragon core and looks great on the excellent high-resolution display.

Back to what we just said though, Android phones do look and act the same. In the end, they all share a set of limitations that are inherent to the very OS. The Acer Liquid is no exception and is equally handicapped in terms of DivX / XviD incompatibility, lack of Flash support in the web browser and poor video recording.

While the competition has been busy addressing some of those issues, Acer perhaps could not have been expected to sort them all out in their debut. But they at least tried to offset some of those disadvantages with features never seen before in a first-gen Android phone: a Snapdragon CPU and a WVGA screen.

HTC Hero is perhaps the ultimate first-generation Android. Released half a year ago, the Hero now has nearly the same price tag as the Liquid. It boasts the advanced Sense UI, multi-touch gestures and native Flash support over the Liquid. But it can't match the processing speed or the screen resolution of the Acer Android. These two are probably the best lookers in the bunch too.

The Samsung I7500 Galaxy, I5700 Galaxy Spica and HTC Magic come slightly cheaper. They all have similar specs, except the CPU - the Spica uses a faster 800MHz processor. The I7500 has an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen but it's nowhere near the Liquid's resolution. The Acer Liquid surely beats them in terms of performance, but if you are looking for a cheaper option within the same class - you may want to check these three out.

The scope and timing of the Acer Liquid make it a midpoint in the Android evolution. It won't stand comparison with the likes of the Nexus One of course but having the same processor and screen resolution as the top droids must be quite a morale booster.

It's easy to say Acer had better luck with Android. But luck or whatever you would call it, we did like the Liquid. It's a pretty close match for most of the first-gen Androids out there and brings some top-tier goodies as well. It looks hot and won't charge a fortune. Sounds like a good deal.

Softex Announces SecureDrive Enabled by the 2010 Intel(R) Core(TM) vPro(TM) Technology for Fast and Easy Remote Management of Self-Encrypting Drives

AUSTIN, Texas -- Softex Inc, the established market leader in Enterprise Single Sign On (ESSO) and Identity and Access Management (IAM) Solutions, announces SecureDrive, an addition to its security suite of products to take full advantage of the full disk encryption security features of OPAL drives and remote, out-of-band management features of the new 2010 Intel® Core™ vPro™ Technology.

Hard-drive vendors are now building self-encrypted drives (SEDs) to adhere to the OPAL standard defined by the Trusted Computing Group. OPAL hard drives eliminate data breaches as a result of stolen or lost PCs, by ensuring that every byte of data on the hard drive is encrypted using the hard drive's internal electronics.

Softex's SecureDrive product allows for easy set up and configuration of the encryption and access rights and allows for multiple authentications mechanisms such as fingerprint, smart card, RFID cards and TPM passphrase. SecureDrive also allows administrators to remotely perform a secure erase of the data from the drive to simplify PC end of life processing. Seamless integration with the new Intel vPro Technology Remote Encryption SDK allows for PC's (powered on or off) to be remotely unlocked by the I/T administrator to perform management tasks such as software installation and patch management.

SecureDrive Client Edition manages encryption for standalone PCs, and SecureDrive Enterprise Edition allows centralized manageability including integration with the current OmniPass Management Console (MMC) and third-party management consoles supporting Intel vPro Technology.

"Softex is excited to collaborate with Intel and provide a seamless integration with its new Intel® Core™ vPro™ Technology so enterprises can take full advantage of the remote and out-of-band management features to manage the self-encrypted OPAL drives," said Vishal Jhaveri, Vice President, Marketing, Softex Incorporated.

"PCs powered by the new Intel® Core™ vPro™ Technology help businesses cut costs and increase efficiency by taking advantage of intelligent performance and unique hardware assisted security and manageability features," said Lisa Watts, director, Ecosystem Development, Intel Business Client Platform Division. "SecureDrive and its integration with the new Intel® Core™ vPro™ Technology will help enterprises simplify the deployment and enable remote management of the self-encrypted OPAL drives. These advanced features will make a PC more secure by preventing data leakage while keeping IT management costs down."

Symbian phone operating system goes open source

The group behind the world's most popular smartphone operating system - Symbian - is giving away "billions of dollars" worth of code for free.

The Symbian Foundation's announced that it would make its code open source in 2008 and has now completed the move.

It means that any organisation or individual can now use and modify the platform's underlying source code "for any purpose".

Symbian has shipped in more than 330m mobile phones, the foundation says.

It believes the move will attract new developers to work on the system and help speed up the pace of improvements.

"This is the largest open source migration effort ever," Lee Williams of the Symbian Foundation told BBC News.

"It will increase rate of evolution and increase the rate of innovation of the platform."

Ian Fogg, principal analyst at Forrester research, said the move was about Symbian "transitioning from one business model to another" as well as trying to gain "momentum and mindshare" for software that had been overshadowed by the release of Apple's iPhone and Google Android operating system.

Evolutionary barrier

Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia bought the software in 2008 and helped establish the non-profit Symbian Foundation to oversee its development and transition to open source.

The foundation includes Nokia, AT&T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.

It's useful for them to say Symbian is now open - Google has done very well out of that
Ian Fogg

Symbian to develop mobile apps

The group has now released what it calls the Symbian platform as open source code. This platform unites different elements of the Symbian operating system as well as components - in particular, user interfaces - developed by individual members.

Until now, Symbian's source code was only open to members of the organisation.

It can be downloaded from the foundation's website from 1400 GMT.

Mr Williams said that one of the motivations for the move was to speed up the rate at which the 10-year-old platform evolved.

"When we chatted to companies who develop third party applications, we found people would spend up to nine months just trying to navigate the intellectual property," he said.

"That was really hindering the rate of progress."

Opening up the platform would also improve security, he added.

'Mind share'

Symbian development is currently dominated by Nokia, but the foundation hoped to reduce the firm's input to "no more than 50%" by the middle of 2011, said Mr Williams.

"We will see a dramatic shift in terms of who is contributing to the platform."

However, said Mr Williams, the foundation would monitor phones using the platform to ensure that they met with minimum standards.

Despite being the world's most popular smart phone operating system, Symbian has been losing the publicity battle, with Google's Android operating system and Apple's iPhone dominating recent headlines.

"Symbian desperately needs to regain mindshare at the moment," said Mr Fogg.

"It's useful for them to say Symbian is now open - Google has done very well out of that."

He also said that the software "may not be as open and free as an outsider might think".

"Almost all of the open source operating systems on mobile phones - Nokia's Maemo, Google's Android - typically have proprietary software in them."

For example, Android incorporates Google's e-mail system Gmail.

But Mr Williams denied the move to open source was a marketing move.

"The ideas we are executing ideas came 12-18 months before Android and before the launch of the original iPhone," Mr Williams told BBC News.

Ballard Reports 2009 Achievements and Provides 2010 Outlook

VANCOUVER - Ballard Power Systems (TSX: BLD; NASDAQ: BLDP) announced its 2009 achievements for the year ended December 31, 2009 and provided an outlook for 2010. All amounts are in U.S. dollars, unless otherwise noted.

2009 has been widely acknowledged as a difficult year for energy technology companies, with the confluence of the global recession, crises in financial markets, and negative conditions in both the automotive and energy sectors. This backdrop had negative impacts on Ballard in 2009, initially in its supporting business segments of contract automotive and material products and subsequently in fuel cell products also.

Given this backdrop, Ballard took decisive actions to streamline its cost base to solidify its path to profitability, and augment its cash reserves, further strengthening its solid balance sheet. With these actions and some signs of improvement in the economy, Ballard ended the year with relatively strong fourth quarter revenues and significant improvement in cash flow from operations.

John Sheridan, President and CEO said "We were pleased to have closed 2009 with stronger revenue in the fourth quarter and a solid foundation for growth. We have started 2010 with a streamlined cost base and a strong order book. We expect to build growth momentum through the year, to position Ballard for positive EBTIDA performance during 2011."

Key 2009 Achievements

Financial
---------

- Generated revenues of $46.7 million (unaudited) for the full year,
a decline of 22% or $12.9 million from 2008. Over half of this
decline was due to the exit from automotive and residential
cogeneration development programs. Fourth quarter revenue was
$16.5 million (unaudited), 13% lower than the same period last
year, but growth of 83% relative to the third quarter of 2009 and
reflects 35% of full-year revenue.
- Reduced the cost base by approximately $18.0 million, or 30%, on
an annual run rate basis, primarily through restructuring
activities in March and August.
- Reduced operating cash consumption(1) by 5% to $27.7 million
(unaudited) for the full year. Fourth quarter operating cash
consumption was ($4.3) million, representing positive cash
contribution to the business, consistent with expectations.
- Augmented cash reserves by monetizing rights under the Share
Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Ford Motor Company relating to
Ballard's 19.9% equity interest in Automotive Fuel Cell
Cooperation Corp. for total gross proceeds of approximately $44.5
million; $37 million received up front and an additional
contingent payment of $7.5 million due upon maturation of the SPA.
- Ended 2009 with cash reserves of approximately $82 million.

Please note that 2009 financial results are unaudited. Ballard expects to
release its audited 2009 financial results on March 10, 2010.

Operational
----------
- Progressed market penetration of fuel cell solutions, as evidenced
by:

- Motorola's deployment of Dantherm Power's backup power system
incorporating Ballard's FCgen(TM)-1020ACS fuel cell product;
- Supply agreement with FirstEnergy Corp. for a 1 MW distributed
generation system for use in a utility load management;
- Plug Power's progress with commercial orders for their
GenDrive(TM) fuel cell-powered forklift customers, including
Central Grocers, Wegmans, Whole Foods and Coca-Cola;
- Sales order for five FCvelocity(TM)-HD6 power modules from
Advanced Public Transportation Systems bv for 18-meter (60-foot)
articulated Phileas buses; and
- Supply agreement with Daimler AG for FCvelocity(TM) fuel cell
products, representing minimum revenue of approximately $24
million in 2010 and 2011.
- Continued to develop fuel cell systems for the wireless telecom
supplemental power market in India with its partners IdaTech, LLC
and ACME Group under a new, more flexible distribution agreement.
- Acquired a controlling interest in Denmark-based Dantherm Power on
January 18, 2010, partnering with co-investors Danfoss A/S and
Dantherm A/S. Through Dantherm Power, Ballard is now actively
involved with delivery of complete backup power systems, in addition
to providing fuel cell stacks and power modules to leading fuel cell
companies including IdaTech, LLC, Plug Power Inc., Baxi Innotech GmbH
and ISE Corporation, in other markets.

Business Outlook

Growth Milestones in 2010
-------------------------
- Begin shipments of Ballard's fuel cell stacks for deployment of
IdaTech, LLC's reformate-based supplemental power systems for the
Indian telecoms market.
- Deployment of Dantherm Power hydrogen-based backup power systems in
one major new network.
- Commission the 1 MW distributed generation system for FirstEnergy
Corp. in Ohio.
- Book the first distributed generation system sale utilizing
by-product hydrogen.
- More than double volumes of stack shipments in material handling, in
line with Plug Power's 2010 shipment target of 1,100 GenDrive(TM)
systems.
- Book new fuel cell bus contracts to support the deployment of more
than 25 buses.

Path to Profitability
---------------------
- Grow revenues in excess of 35% over the 2009 level
- Improve cash flow from operations by 30% from the 2009 level.
- With this performance trajectory in 2010, Ballard expects to be
positioned for positive EBTIDA performance during 2011.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Endnotes:
---------
(1) Operating cash consumption is a non-GAAP measure used to assist in
assessing Ballard's financial performance. Non-GAAP measures do not
have any standardized meaning prescribed by GAAP and are therefore
unlikely to be comparable to similar measures presented by other
companies. Operating cash consumption measures the amount of cash
required to fund the operating activities of our business (net of
restructuring and related costs) and excludes financing and investing
activities except for capital lease payments and additions, net of
proceeds on sale, of plant and equipment.

Hawaii Customers Benefit From $28 Million Verizon Wireless Network Expansion In 2009

Investment gives customers faster wireless service in more locations for better Web browsing, downloads of music and 3D games, streaming video and e-mail.

HONOLULU, HI — Across the islands of Hawaii, wireless users are making more wireless calls and using more data services thanks to Verizon Wireless’ $28 million network investment in 2009. That’s an average of nearly $76,000 per day spent to provide customers in Hawaii with the reliable, high-quality service they expect from Verizon Wireless.

The company’s ongoing network investment now totals more than $214 million in Hawaii and more than $55 billion nationally over the past nine years.

“Our customers are texting, e-mailing, downloading music, visiting Web sites and sharing pictures and videos at a record pace. Last year in Hawaii, 3G wireless data traffic increased nearly 50% from 2008,” said Kelley Kurtzman region president, Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless has the largest and most reliable wireless voice and 3G data network coverage area in the U.S. A side-by-side comparison of 3G network coverage maps shows that Verizon Wireless has more 3G coverage than the three other major carriers.

New cell sites
A total of 4 new cell sites were installed in Hawaii in 2009 to increase coverage and enhance 3G high-speed wireless services.

Alltel integration
In January 2009, Verizon Wireless completed its acquisition of Alltel, expanding the company’s network coverage to approximately 290 million people, nearly the entire U.S. population.

Real-life Test Men
Verizon Wireless network technicians (who inspired the famous TV Test Man character) traveled nearly 3,000 miles across Hawaii last year in special vehicles to measure connection quality on the Verizon Wireless network versus other carriers.

4G LTE services
Verizon Wireless also took steps toward the rollout of the nation’s first 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network. The company’s aggressive 4G LTE network build includes plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets in 2010 and cover virtually all its current nationwide 3G footprint with the next-generation network by the end of 2013.

Washington State Customers Benefit From $71 Million Verizon Wireless Network Expansion In 2009

Investment gives customers faster wireless service in more locations for better Web browsing, downloads of music and 3D games, streaming video and e-mail.

BELLEVUE, WA — Across the Evergreen State wireless users are making more wireless calls and using more data services thanks to Verizon Wireless’ $71 million network investment in 2009. That’s an average of nearly $194,000 per day spent to provide customers in Washington with the reliable, high-quality service they expect from Verizon Wireless.

The company’s ongoing network investment now totals more than $907 million in Washington and more than $55 billion nationally over the past nine years.

“Our customers are texting, e-mailing, downloading music, visiting Web sites and sharing pictures and videos at a record pace. Last year in Washington State, 3G wireless data traffic increased nearly 90% percent from 2008,” said Kelley Kurtzman region president, Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless has the largest and most reliable wireless voice and 3G data network coverage area in the U.S. A side-by-side comparison of 3G network coverage maps shows that Verizon Wireless has more 3G coverage than the three other major carriers.

New cell sites
A total of 54 new cell sites were installed and activated in 25 counties throughout Washington in 2009 to increase coverage and enhance 3G high-speed wireless services.

Alltel integration
In January 2009, Verizon Wireless completed its integration of Unicel in Eastern Washington, Oregon and North Idaho, in addition to acquiring Alltel, expanding the company’s network coverage to approximately 290 million people, nearly the entire U.S. population.

Real-life Test Men
Verizon Wireless network technicians (who inspired the famous TV Test Man character) traveled nearly 30,000 miles across Washington last year in special vehicles to measure connection quality on the Verizon Wireless network versus other carriers.

4G LTE services
Verizon Wireless also took steps toward the rollout of the nation’s first 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network beginning in Seattle and Boston. The company’s aggressive 4G LTE network build includes plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets in 2010 and cover virtually all its current nationwide 3G footprint with the next-generation network by the end of 2013.
