Sharp to launch advanced 3D panels for mobile gear

Saturday, April 3, 2010

Sharp Corp said it plans to start making this year advanced 3D displays for cellphones and other mobile devices that don't require special viewing glasses, betting that demand for 3D images will grow beyond movie theatres and living rooms to portable machines.

Stirring demand for small-sized displays is important for Japanese LCD panel suppliers after they suffered sluggish demand for panels designed for portable electronics due to a sharp slide in mobile phone sales in the domestic market.

Sharp launched mobile phones and PCs equipped with a display that enables users to watch 3D images without glasses in the early 2000s.

But they have not really caught on because of such factors as bulkiness, insufficient brightness and the lack of 3D contents.

Sharp since then has developed brighter and thinner 3D displays with higher resolution and a touch panel function.

"In the 2D era, contents and infrastructure have spread from movies to homes, and from homes to mobile devices," Sharp Executive Managing Officer Yoshisuke Hasegawa told a news conference on Friday.

"We believe the same thing will happen with 3D. Three-dimensional images that mostly inhabit big screens now are about to hit mobile terminals."

Hasegawa, head of Sharp's LCD business, did not disclose a sales target for the new 3D display.

Consumer electronics makers are scrambling to launch 3D TVs this year, hoping the technology will be as big a boost for the industry as the transition to color TVs from black and white.

Panasonic Corp and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have already released 3D models, while Sony Corp is planning to start offering 3D TVs in June.

But analysts have said the need for special 3D glasses may keep consumers from adopting the technology quickly.

Mobile electronics that let users enjoy 3D images without special glasses have been around for some time, since people tend to watch the display from a fixed distance and with a fixed angle on personal devices such as mobile phones, making it technologically less challenging to offer a 3D function.

Japanese game maker Nintendo Co said last month it planned to launch a new model of its DS handheld game console that allows users to play 3D games without using special glasses.

Hasegawa said the company has already received inquiries on the new product from mobile phone makers and other potential customers, but declined to say if Nintendo is one of them.

Shares of Sharp, the world's fourth-largest LCD TV maker behind Samsung, Sony and LG Electronics Inc, closed 2.7 percent higher at 1,209 yen on Friday, outperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index, which gained 0.8 percent.

Motorola Miilestone vs Google Nexus One vs Acer Liquid comparison pics

Here are some pics comparing my Motorola Milestone, Google Nexus One and Acer Liquid. All three phones run Android(Acer runs 1.6, Nexus and Milestone 2.1). The Android version on the Nexus looks the best IMHO(thanks to live wallpapers and HTC Sense). The screen of the Nexus is the brightest with vivid colors...like I said before the text is blurry and on the Acer the text is the sharpest. The Liquid has the smallest screen but the same high resolution hence it is the sharpest. The Liquid is the lightest but also feels the cheapest because of the plastic(well it is the cheapest of the 3). Build quality, I would say the Nexus wins. Camera, I would say the Milestone wins. Speakers, I would also the Milestone wins. The Acer is also plagued with less responsive keys under the screen just like the Nexus. The keys under the screen of the Milestone is the most responsive of the 3. Here is a surprise that I didn't expect...the Liquid ran the smoothest of the 3. It's totally smooth and lag free when navigating through the home screen, menu and programs...Impressive. What would I pick of the 3? Hard to say...each has it's strong points...perhaps maybe the Sony Ericsson X10? =) I will have it on Tuesday and I will post some unboxing pics after I get it.

Acer Liquid unboxing pics

Here are some unboxing pics of my Acer Liquid. For starters, I really like the box. It looks nice and I like how it opens up...pretty unique. The phone itself feels pretty solid and is light. However, the phone's housing is shiny black plastic all over which makes it a fingerprint magnet. It needs to be cleaned all the time. I like the bundled case and really nice of Acer to bundle it with a screen protector which is an exact fit on the screen. The screen feels a tad small but it has a high resolution so everything is super sharp. The screen is also pretty bright and responsive. The bottom row of keys are less responsive than the screen. Android 1.6 runs super smooth. I have rooted the phone and I still haven't decided whether to flash a custom Eclair ROM to it or not. In conlusion, the phone is pretty good and definitely worth it's price(it's way cheaper than the Milestone or the Nexus).

Sony Ericsson Satio vs Motorola Milestone vs Google Nexus One comparison pics

Here are some pics comaparing my Sony Ericsson Satio, Motorola Milestone and Google Nexus One. I have used the Satio for a few months and it has served me well as a phone, camera and video recorder. Asides from what I mentioned I have not used it for anything else. I just didn't find Symbian fun to use anymore and it feels outdated (I have used tons of Symbian phones in the past). The phone takes awesome pics(nice Xenon flash) and pretty decent videos. I have updated it to the latest firmware and overall it seems faster but I just like Android more. I will be selling the Satio. Comparing all 3 phones, the Satio feels the lightest in hand but it also felt the most "plasticy". The Satio is also physically the thickest. Screen is subjective to what you prefer...The Nexus has the brightest and most vivid color screen but the text is blurry. The Satio takes the best pics and videos no doubt. If I had to pick from the 3, it would be a decision between the Milestone or the Nexus. If the Satio ran Android, then that would be a different story.

Motorola Milestone unboxing pics

Here are some pics of my Motorola Milestone. The box is pretty small but I didn't like how it was designed(nothing fitted perfectly...I guess that's how they designed it to be). I liked the Nexus box a lot more. The phone is very well built with a study feel but it feels heavy in my hand. The slider works well for me and doesn't wobble. The screen is fantastic and sharp. The keyboard is fine after getting used to it (it's not as bad as I expected). The camera and video capture is good after the 2.1 update (the phone came with 2.0.1). I have rooted the device of course. The multimedia dock came with the phone and is a nice addition. I don't think that I would buy it though. The dock puts the phone in a special dock mode showing the time, weather and a few other buttons. In conclusion, I really like the phone and I can't wait to play some SNES games on it.

Google Nexus One unboxing pics

Here are some unboxing pics of my Google Nexus One. The box is small like the latest boxes from HTC. I liked how it's simple and everything fits into place. I like the bundled pouch with the green robot. The phone has a nice finish and feels solid in my hand (typical HTC). The screen is bright and the colors are vidid but the text isn't really sharp. The screen is very responsive but the botton row of keys are not. I rooted and flashed the Desire ROM from Modaco and the HTC Sense looks awesome on the phone and is very fast(even faster than stock 2.1). I liked the multiple colors of the trackball(reminds me of Japanese phones). For me, the speaker volume was low on both speakers. The camera is mediocre. In conclusion, the phone is pretty nice but it didn't knock me out.

Frbiz Discusses Samsung I6500U

BEIJING -- Frbiz.com, one of China's leading B2B search platforms, discusses Samsung I6500U.

The I6500U, in terms of configuration and functions, has greatly improved on Samsung's original I5700U. Supported by China Unicom's WCDMA 3G network, it maintains better network connectivity and a better operating system. With the upgrade to the latest Android 2.1 version with built-in GPS module, the screen shows more dazzling bright AMOLED material.

Samsung I6500U material has a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The mobile is almost completely filled by the large touch screen.

The AMOLED screen material used also enhances the Samsung I6500U. The display grade of the TFT screen compared to the traditional bright colors shows higher performance. In theory, it saves power with the TFT screen, and also has a higher degree of inspiration. The time in the operating system Android will be a better experience.

The Samsung I6500U's handset segment has a relatively simple design. As the large screen takes up most of the area, the handset has only a small space. In addition to a long strip of the receiver and no other decoration, the handset is designed with a network of silver dust.

The Samsung I6500U's back has a 3.2 million pixel camera, with a maximum of 2048 x 1536 pixels for the static camera. It is not equipped with flash, but such a camera configuration is enough for daily use. It is not designed primarily as a camera phone.

The camera is placed at the back of the top, with the lens designed in a groove, which avoids scratching. This design is worthy of recognition.

The Samsung I6500U, using the latest Android 2.1 operating system, is the first Android Unicom model built that includes fertile 3G and mobile business, including a number of Unicom Office Special Services. Because it has a built-in high frequency of 800MHz processors, the system is still running up and fluency guaranteed.

The 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and 16 million color display is very satisfactory, and basically never appears grainy.

Music player interface is simple. All keys are relatively large, and user-friendly to operate. The phone also has a built-in FM radio module in which you can store multiple stations.

Mobile Virus 'MMS Bomber' Rampant, Millions of Mobile Phones in China Impacted

BEIJING -- Recently a new mobile virus named "MMS Bomber" has run rampant in China, and millions of Chinese mobile phones were impacted, reported Beijing Business News. The National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China has alerted mobile users that the targets of the virus are mobile devices with S60 3rd OS, mostly Nokia and Samsung smart-phones.

The virus is disguised as an application; once installed, the virus will automatically connect to the internet and send MMS containing a malicious URL to random mobile phone numbers without the user's awareness, and result in finance losses to mobile users.

The virus was first captured by the Mobile Security Center of NetQin Mobile Inc., a leading mobile security service provider, in early February. The company's statistic shows that at least 100,000 mobile phones were infected up to now. It's notable that the virus has defence mechanisms. Once infected, the virus will disable the system management program on the mobile phone, and mobile users will not be able to uninstall the virus, says Dr. Zou Shihong, Chief Scientist of NetQin. NetQin has now launched the latest Mobile Anti-virus 3.2 multi-language version for S60 3rd OS, which can scan and remove the virus successfully. What mobile users need to do is to download the NetQin Mobile Anti-virus 3.2, install and update to the latest virus database to get protected.

Gartner reports smart-phones represented 14 percent of total mobile device sales in 2009, and are predicted to reach 38 percent by 2013; meanwhile, the mobile application market will reach $17.5 billion by 2012. By then, the number of mobile application downloads will have also grown to nearly 50 billion from just over 7 billion in 2009, according to Chetan Sharma Consulting latest report. The explosive growth of mobile technology and applications has made mobile devices an enticing target for hackers and mobile security threats. As more mobile devices are used to store personal and professional information, the more they are at risk for security threats.

About NetQin

Founded in Beijing in 2005 and backed by leading venture capital firms like Seqouia, Mayfield and Fidelity, NetQin delivers complete mobile security solutions, including anti-virus, anti-spam, and privacy protection, to over 35 million users worldwide. As a leading player in mobile security, NetQin holds 68% market share in China, and has received several industry awards, including the 2009 China Frost & Sullivan Award for Mobile Security Market Leadership.

Extensive partnership has accelerated the growth of NetQin. The company is the only partner providing anti-spamming service to China Mobile, and is a close partner of China Unicom. As an important partner to Nokia, NetQin products are preloaded on all S60 devices sold in China. NetQin works closely with Huawei mobile software, and has also been recognized as a platinum partner of the Symbian Foundation.

Local Verizon Wireless Employees To Celebrate Company’s 10-Year Anniversary In New York

• Local employment has more than doubled since 2000
• Data, devices and apps now dominate the industry
• Network continues to evolve to 4G

ROCHESTER, NY — Over 1,400 Rochester-based Verizon Wireless employees will celebrate an important milestone on Monday: the company’s 10th anniversary.

On April 4, 2000, Bell Atlantic Mobile and Vodafone Airtouch merged to form Verizon Wireless, creating a national company with 30,000 employees and 20 million wireless customers (including 4 million paging customers!) and changing the wireless industry landscape locally and nationally.

Here in Rochester, the newly formed company employed a little over 600 people, including 60 in its Rochester Customer Service call center. (The local Bell Atlantic Mobile assets had been spun off from Frontier just four months earlier after operating as Frontier Cellular and, before that, Rochester Tel Mobile.)

Today, the wireless landscape is vastly different:

* Total U.S. wireless customers – 2000: 80 million; 2010: 277 million
* Total Verizon Wireless customers – 2000: 20 million; 2010: 91 million
* Total Rochester-based employees – 2000: 600; 2010: 1,400
* Rochester call center employment – 2000: 60; 2010: 1,200

The way we use wireless devices has changed dramatically, too:

* Wireless service in 2000 overwhelmingly consisted of voice calls and paging, with wireless data speeds only in the dial-up range – today, wireless data is the norm, with 3G data speeds equivalent to broadband service and preparations underway to deploy 4G service
* Text messaging use was near zero – now our customers send and receive billions of text/picture/video messages every day
* In 2000, we’d only recently introduced digital handsets – today, smartphones are rapidly becoming our most popular devices
* No longer a luxury reserved for businesspeople, wireless phones are being used by everyone from students to seniors.

“It’s fascinating to look back over the last ten years and see how much our industry and the way we live our lives have changed,” said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “We’ve gone from carrying simple handsets with little more than voice mail and caller ID to surfing the Web, checking e-mail, sending picture and video messages, and downloading apps onto these mini-multimedia devices. I think the future of our industry will be as exciting as the last decade has been.”

What will the next ten years bring? That’s impossible to predict. But faster data speeds, more video capability, and even more advanced multimedia devices are just around the corner.

Employees of Verizon Wireless’ Rochester call center will be celebrating the company’s anniversary with decorations, snacks, and other events throughout the day on Monday.

AT&T Brings 3G Mobile Broadband Network to Central Oregon

New Store in Cascade Village and Local Wireless Network Upgrade Extend Access to Advanced Products, Services and Applications.

AT&T* opened its first AT&T-owned retail store in Central Oregon to provide products and services for customers in the region. Also today, AT&T is announcing the availability of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Central Oregon, opening the door to a new era of mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content for customers in the area. The new store is located in Cascade Village at
63455 N. Hwy. 97 in Bend, Ore.

The new store features a spacious showroom with a hands-on, interactive design that redefines the meaning of customer experience. For example, touch-screen information stations make it easy for customers to view rate plans, coverage maps and shop for devices, accessories and ringtones. Interactive experience stations allow customers to test-drive AT&T’s portfolio of cutting-edge wireless products and services, such as 3G netbooks and smartphones, downloadable music, messaging, streaming video, data, Web browsing and more. Customers can also browse more than 170 unique accessories including hands-free headsets, phone cases, screen protectors and more. AT&T customers now have 33 AT&T-owned retail locations to choose from in Oregon.

“Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing, whether it’s for sharing video and photos with friends, watching a movie, checking the latest scores, or listening to music on a phone, netbook or other mobile devices on the go,” said Mike Maxwell, vice president & general manager, AT&T Pacific Northwest. “With this network expansion and store opening, our customers can enjoy the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience with emerging devices and tens of thousands of mobile applications.”

AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation’s fastest 3G network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds for an amazing wireless voice and data experience. Unlike other 3G networks, AT&T customers can use voice and data services on our 3G network simultaneously.

Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to the increasing popularity of advanced smartphones and the performance of AT&T’s 3G network, the nation’s fastest.

“We’re giving our customers greater convenience and a hands-on experience with our products and services,” said Adam Grzybicki, president of AT&T Oregon. “We commend our public officials for enacting policies that encourage businesses to invest in their operations in Oregon.”

AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation’s fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 as AT&T combines the new technology with the increased deployment of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic technology.

AT&T’s 3G mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, delivering voice service in over 220 countries and data service in more than 190 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on 130 major cruise ships, as well as 3G services in 115 countries.

For more information about AT&T’s 3G coverage in Central Oregon or anywhere in the United States, consumers can visit http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer. The online tool can measure the quality of coverage based on a street address, intersection, ZIP code or even a landmark.

Operating hours for the Cascade Village AT&T store are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday.

HP, Dell Rethinking 10-Inch Netbooks: Report

With disappointing sales and other form factors—such as tablets—coming to the fore, HP and Dell reportedly are rethinking their investments in 10-inch netbooks, according to a report in DigitTimes. Netbooks helped the PC space stay afloat during the recession, but with better economic times and Windows 7, consumers may be looking more toward full-featured laptops.

Hewlett-Packard and Dell, No. 1 and No. 3 in the worldwide PC market, respectively, may be scaling back their investments in the 10-inch netbook space, according to reports.

DigiTimes, quoting unnamed sources from netbook manufacturers, said April 1 that the two vendors are considering the move because of disappointing sales of the systems powered by Intel’s “Pine Trail” platform, which includes the company’s Atom N450 chip.

With the Atom N450, Intel gave vendors and users a number of new features—including better performance by combining the CPU and graphics capabilities on the chip as well as longer battery life.

However, that hasn’t resulted in a bump in sales, according to the sources, so HP and Dell officials are looking to scale back what they do with the 10-inch netbooks, and HP reportedly is considering dumping the 10-inch notebook altogether in favor of focusing on 11.6-inch systems powered by processors from Advanced Micro Devices.

The OEMs also are putting more effort behind other devices, including tablets.

According to the report, other top-tier netbook makers—including Acer (the second largest global PC vendor), Asus and Samsung—will continue investing heavily in netbooks. However, second-tier netbook vendors and white-box makers are quitting the market, unable or unwilling to keep up with deep price cuts the top-tier OEMs put in place in the second half of 2009 to boost holiday sales.

During the deepest months of the worldwide recession, netbooks—or mininotebooks—were a key to helping the PC market stay afloat. IDC analysts in December 2009 said that the combination of back-to-school sales and consumer mobile devices—including netbooks—led the PC market to 2.4 percent growth in the third quarter of 2009.

Sales of netbooks grew 37 percent over the second quarter.

Overall, the PC market is continuing a strong rebound, fueled in large part by the release of Windows 7 as well as sales of lower-cost PCs, including netbooks, according to Gartner analysts in January. Shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009 grew 22.1 percent over the same period in 2008.

Holiday price cuts and pent-up demand also helped drive sales, IDC said.

All this is good news for HP, Dell, Acer and other PC makers as 2010 rolls along, and with the recession ebbing, netbooks—with their fewer hardware and operating features—may become less attractive alternatives to full Windows 7 notebooks.

In addition, the vendor rush to tablet PCs may also further marginal netbooks. HP is working on its Slate tablet, Dell has its Mini 5, and the big one—Apple’s iPad—hits stores April 3.

HP and Dell to reduce investment for 10-inch netbook, say sources

Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell have both significantly reduced their investments in the 10-inch netbook segment, with HP reportedly even considering quitting the 10-inch netbook market and turning its focus to AMD-based 11.6-inch notebooks because profits from Intel Pine Trail-based netbooks have been lower than expected, according to sources from notebook makers.

Most of the second-tier and white-box netbook vendors have already quit the market after first-tier players started cutting their netbook prices in the second half of 2009 to compete for market share.

But Acer, Asustek Computer and Samsung Electronics remain active in the netbook market, with netbooks accounting for large portions of their overall notebook shipments, the sources said.

The chilling of the netbook market is expected to affect vendors' willingness to launch smartbook products, the sources commented.
