MWC: Nokia, Intel Partner on Linux-Based MeeGo Platform

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) convention in Barcelona, Intel and Nokia step up their alliance by announcing MeeGo, a Linux-based software platform that aims to support multiple hardware architectures across multiple platforms.

Handset maker Nokia and chip set giant Intel announced a partnership to merge the existing Maemo and Moblin global programming communities into MeeGo, a Linux-based software platform that will support multiple hardware architectures across a broad range of device segments, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, media phones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

MeeGo offers the Qt application development environment, and builds on the Moblin core operating system and reference user experiences. Using Qt, developers can write once to create applications for a variety of devices and platforms, and market them through Nokia’s Ovi Store and Intel AppUpSM Center, said Nokia’s executive vice president of devices, Kai ƖistƤmƶ. He said MeeGo will be hosted by the Linux Foundation and governed using the best practices of the open-source development model. The first release of MeeGo is expected in the second quarter of 2010, with devices launching later in the year.

“This collaboration benefits developers, consumers, and software and hardware vendors. It’s a complete Internet experience,” he said, noting the company’s Ovi application store will be the main channel of distribution for applications built using MeGoo. “Applications and other content are not in a walled garden, rather the ecosystem is more like an open frontier.”

The partnership builds on the companies’ strategic collaboration announced in June 2009, and Intel's senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s software and services group, Renee James, invited participation in MeeGo from existing Maemo and Moblin global communities and across the communications and computing industries. “We are encouraging community contributions at MeeGoo.com and encouraging wider participation from the communications industry,” she said. “We will continue to collaborate and contribute, allowing partners to build value-add onto MeeGo.”

ƖistƤmƶ said MeeGo builds on the capabilities of the Moblin core OS and its support for a wide range of device types and reference user experiences, combined with the momentum of Maemo in the mobile industry and the “broadly adopted” Qt application and UI framework for software developers. He said using Qt for application development means developers can write applications once and easily deploy them on MeeGo and across other platforms, for example, on Symbian. “We are not going to favor any particular OEM or hardware architecture,” he said. “MeeGoo will create a shared, single platform, which will drive the future of mobile computing.”

When asked if Nokia and Intel will collaborate more closely in the future on the hardware end, perhaps resulting in Nokia phones running Intel chip sets, both speakers declined to offer specifics, but ƖistƤmƶ said it would be “natural” to take the best hardware for future devices, suggesting Nokia phones with Intel chips in the future. However, ƖistƤmƶ and James reiterated MeGoo was an opportunity for developers to create applications from which many hardware manufacturers across several different markets could benefit. The aim of MeGoo is to be “broadly adoptable across several devices from different manufacturers,” ƖistƤmƶ said.

Samsung demonstrates the first LTE netbook at Mobile World Congress

An extensive line-up of netbook and note PC showcase advanced mobile technology.

Barcelona, Spain - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading provider of future mobile and IT technology, is demonstrating the world’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) netbook PC at Mobile World Congress 2010. Samsung’s own in-house designed LTE modem chipset, Kalmia, enabled the development of a small form factor netbook with LTE capability. Following the company’s latest deployment of a commercial LTE dongle, Samsung reasserts its industry-leading position in next generation mobile technology with the largest line-up of devices.

Samsung demonstrates live video streaming via the company’s own LTE network equipment on the Samsung netbook N150.The Samsung netbook N150 is currently available in market with HSPA 3G communications and WiFi access and will become commercially available with LTE according to service schedule and market demand. The inclusion of LTE will deliver high speed, low latency and ubiquitous connectivity to all users who require high-volume data access whenever they want and wherever they are. For the first time, operators preparing for the deployment of next generation networks can deliver high-powered products to showcase network strength and the true benefits to end-users.

With its high-quality design and great value, the Samsung N150 offers users everything they need in a portable netbook. The N150’s 10.1” anti-reflective LED display gives users fine-tuned images with the sharpest detail and boldest colours, without the inconvenience of mirror effects under bright lights or in sunny weather. This energyefficient display also works with the N150’s optimized processing performance and Samsung’s proprietary-enhanced battery life solution to deliver exceptional battery performance of up to 8.5 hours*.

Using the integrated Easy Resolution Manager tool, screen resolution can easily be changed if a program or game needs to be viewed in 1024x768. Additional visual enhancements include an integrated Digital LiveCam for videoconferencing or live messaging. An integrated webcam, internal microphone and headphone-out connection also provide an easy and cost-effective way to stay in touch with friends and family using video-conferencing, live messaging or VoIP telephony.

“The N150 is the smart choice to meet all your essential mobile computing needs with style,” said Kyu Uhm, Vice President of Samsung IT Solutions Business.

He continued, “We see increasing demand for data services, regardless of whether the consumer is indoors, outside, or even on the move. With our end-to-end Total Solution from core chipset to a variety of devices, we are providing true value to our customers.”

Samsung has proven its leadership in next generation mobile technology and has a long history of involvement in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Collaboration with groups of telecommunications associations to make a globally applicable 3G and 4G standard is a natural progression for Samsung, who are also introducing the most upto-date LTE technology at the show.

Samsung’s public demonstration of Long Term Evolution (LTE) included a total solution from infrastructure to mobile devices. In particular, Samsung has developed its own access and core networks, which support multi-vendor interoperability. Besides the world’s first LTE embedded netbook PC, Samsung is also showcasing the dongle type device GT-B3710. Samsung’s LTE solution is fully compliant with the latest 3GPP LTE Rel-8 standard. Initial deployment of the service began in 2009 and active discussion and trial tests will continue in 2010.

Alongside the world’s first demonstration of the LTE netbook N150, Samsung also showcased an extensive line-up of netbook and note PCs at the show including N210, N220 and NB30.

HP loads Android onto a netbook

FLOGGER OF EXPENSIVE PRINTER INK, HP has joined Acer by putting Google's Linux-based Android operating system on a netbook.

Branded as a Compaq device, HP's Airlife 100 netbook is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM processor that's found in a number of recently released smartphones including Google's Nexus One.

In fact the main differences between the two devices seem to be the screen size and the almost full-size keyboard on the HP unit.

airlifeThe HP Airlife 100 has a 10.1-inch screen with a 16GB SSD bolstered by an SD card slot. This sort of back-to-basics netbook specification is livened up by integrated WiFi, 3G and GPS. It's the 3G connectivity that has led to HP partnering with Telefonica to provide wireless access.

Undoubtedly Android is an impressive smartphone OS, but it received a lukewarm response in its first outing as a netbook OS in Acer's D250 netbook. Complaints about it being too lightweight even as a netbook OS might carry some weight, but the upshot of such a nimble system is its impressive battery life. HP quotes 12 hours of active use for the Airlife 100 with up to 10 days battery life in standby.

Sadly HP has yet to incorporate the Android OS into its line of Ipaq devices. Its latest, announced on the eve of Mobile World Congress and named Glisten is, depressingly, shipping with Windows Mobile 6.5.

HP has confirmed that the Airlife will be coming to the UK through O2 fairly soon, although no firm date has been announced yet. Pricing has also not been announced, but we do expect this netbook will be available with competitive data tariffs.

Ericsson launches app store called “eStore”

The eStore is aimed at operators wanting to prevent churn.

Ericsson has teamed up with Opera to create its own application store aimed at operators wanting to prevent customers defecting to more advanced smartphone platforms.

The Ericsson eStore allows operators to set-up and offer an application store to their customers. Ericsson said it is already in discussions with a number of operators interested in the new service.
Launching the eStore at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Ericsson said it is designed for any mobile phone. The eStore already has more than 30,000 apps which are a mix of free and paid applications. Paid apps are bought via the user's phone bill.

Hans Vestberg, Ericsson's CEO, said: 'It will provide operators with an open landscape and an opportunity for them to quickly set up their own app stores. The revenue split will follow the traditional model, with Ericsson retaining only a small percentage.'
Opera co-founder Jon von Tetzchner said: 'With this additional revenue stream, operators can now better target new users groups and retain existing customers through new, useful applications that can run on multiple device types.'

Ericsson is hoping the eStore will attract developers, since it offers a one-stop shop for multiple operators.
Ericsson is the latest mobile player to challenge the supremacy of the Apple App store. However Ericsson faces competition from its own Sony Ericsson joint venture, which yesterday announced a partnership with Samsung, LG and 24 operators worldwide to develop an open international applications platform.

Global HSPA connections reach 200 million

Operators to spend $72 billion on mobile broadband in 2010, according to Deutsche Bank; biggest investment to come from Asia-Pacific.

The number of HSPA connections worldwide has passed the 200 million mark and looks set to grow rapidly with operators committing to hefty mobile broadband investment, according to new figures from the GSMA.

Operators will spend up to $72 billion on mobile broadband technologies – including HSPA/HSPA+, WCDMA and EVDO/CDMA – in 2010 alone, the industry body revealed, citing statistics from Deutsche Bank.

New HSPA connections currently stand at around 9 million per month, but will rise to "13 million per month by the end of this year," Dan Warren, director of technology at the GSMA, told Total Telecom when the figures were published.

HSPA connections will grow to 342 million by the end of 2010, he predicted.

Europe will account for the lion's share of these, with 120 million connections by year-end, followed by Asia-Pacific with 116 million and North America with 58 million.

However, Europe will fall behind the other regions in terms of mobile broadband spend this year.

While European operators will plough up to $14 billion into technologies like HSPA and WCDMA, their North American counterparts have earmarked capex of up to $19 billion and in Asia-Pacific the figure could come in at $34 billion.

According to the GSMA, mobile broadband will suck up 52% of operators' investments in mobile infrastructure worldwide in 2010. North America will come in well ahead of that though, with operators ploughing 80% of their mobile capex into mobile broadband.

The world's 200 million HSPA subscribers currently have 1,800 HSPA-enabled devices to choose from, from 150-plus suppliers.

There are 294 commercially live HSPA networks in 123 countries; 183 of those networks deliver peak data rates of over 3.6 Mbps. There are 37 commercially live HSPA+ networks, capable of data speeds of up to 21 Mbps.

Garmin-Asus nĆ¼vifone™ A50: An Android™ Smartphone with More Location Technology Than Any Other Smartphone

BARCELONA, Spain--Garmin-Asus, a co-branded alliance between Garmin® Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), and ASUSTeK® Computer Inc. (TAIEX: 2357), announced the Garmin-Asus nĆ¼vifone A50, a touchscreen Android-powered smartphone with multiple location technologies and apps. The A50 benefits from the personalization and enhanced features offered by the Android platform, and also includes Garmin navigation with turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions for use in a car or while walking. Location features are designed into virtually every function including email, text messaging, and photos. The A50 will be on display at the Garmin-Asus booth (Hall 8, #8B127) at Mobile World Congress, February 15-18, 2010.

“Location is relevant to everything you do”

“The A50 brings premium navigation features to the Android operating system, offering users a seamless location based experience along with access to the wealth of applications that the platform affords,” said Benson Lin, vice president and general manager of ASUS’ personal mobile devices business unit, handheld business group.

“Location is relevant to everything you do,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “The A50 integrates navigation and GPS functionality throughout the device, which gives customers the versatility and reliability they need as they navigate their day.”

The elegant and thin A50 has a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display that incorporates a finger-friendly user interface. The QWERTY touchscreen keyboard makes it easy to send and receive messages, and predictive text helps customers type faster. It also comes with hardware features like 4GB internal storage, an expandable microSD card slot, and accelerometer so every screen can be viewed in portrait or landscape mode.

Access to thousands of applications

The A50 integrates Google™ mobile services with one-click access to Google Search™ by voice, Google Maps™, Gmail™, YouTube™, calendar, contacts and Android Market™, where users can find more than 20,000 applications to expand and personalize their phone to fit their lifestyle.

Powerful enterprise email capability

The A50 includes on-device sync with Microsoft Exchange server, with the ability to wirelessly synchronize contacts, calendar and enterprise email. Account setup is quick and easy, and in a few simple steps users will have their contacts, calendar and email ready to go.

High-sensitivity GPS receivers with Garmin navigation

The A50 receives its location (latitude and longitude) information from multiple sources including satellite, network-based and terrestrial sources. These overlapping technologies ensure that A50 customers have the best location and navigation experience a smartphone can offer.

Garmin navigation is included and preloaded on the A50. Because maps are installed on the device, customers will not have to wait for third party maps to download from a server, nor will they lose their turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation if they are out of cell phone coverage. The A50 also has many of the same features as a high-end Garmin nĆ¼vi® navigation device such as lane assist with junction view that guides drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit and realistically displays road signs. Ready for pedestrian or automotive navigation out-of-the-box, the A50 includes a custom Garmin car mount and vehicle power cable.

The A50 also supports cityXplorer™ maps so that customers can plan and use routes that include public transit options such as bus, tramway, metro and suburban rail systems. cityXplorer content is available as an optional download for select cities. Thanks to the A50’s e-compass, customers will know their heading even when standing still.

In addition to Android Market, the A50 has preloaded, apps through Garmin-Asus’ connected services, which includes real-time, location-relevant information like weather, traffic, fuel prices, safety cameras, flight status. Connected services information varies by country.

Customers also have access to Street View in Google Maps and 3D landmark images.

Surf the web

With a powerful, multi-touch capable WebKit browser, the A50 allows users to browse the web at quick speeds and view streaming content. In addition, it automatically identifies location information embedded within web pages allowing the user to quickly navigate to the locations published on the world-wide web.

Take quality photos

The A50 includes a three mega-pixel camera with auto-focus that automatically geotags images with an exact latitude and longitude reference of where the photo was taken. Customers may then save the image so they can navigate back to the location, or email the geo-tagged image to friends.

Availability

The Garmin-Asus nĆ¼vifone A50 is expected to be available in Europe in the first half of 2010. Specific availability and pricing details will be given in the future. Additional information about Garmin-Asus products is available at www.GarminAsus.com.

Mobile firms unite to offer applications

Twenty-four of the largest phone operators have banded together to challenge the dominance of mobile app stores, such as that operated by Apple.

The Wholesale Applications Community, as it is known, aims to make it easier for developers to build and sell apps "irrespective of device or technology".

The alliance, which includes Vodafone, China Mobile and Sprint, has access to more than three billion customers.

Analysts said it was an attempt by operators to "regain control of apps".

However, research firm CCS Insight warned that operators "have a poor track record with this type of industry consortium".

The app market is currently a lucrative business for mobile firms.

Analysts at Gartner have predicted that spending on the specialist pieces of software will hit $6.2bn (£4bn) this year with the number of downloads rising to 4.5 billion from 2.5 billion last year.

It predicts that downloads will top 21 billion by 2013, yielding almost $30bn.

Simple approach

Apple currently dominates the app market, with more than 3 billion downloaded from its app store in 18 months.

Blackberry, Google, Nokia, Symbian and Microsoft all offer their own app stores.

The mood this year should be grim after a 2009 that this industry like many others will want to forget
Rory Cellan-Jones
Technology correspondent, Barcelona

Read Rory's thoughts in full

As a result, developers often have to create different versions of apps and go through separate approval processes for each individual store.

The Wholesale Applications Community aims to overcome this fragmentation by offering a single "open platform that delivers applications to all mobile phone users".

It aims to develop a common standard for applications in the next 12 months.

As well as the 24 network operators, the work is also supported by hardware manufacturers such as LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, as well as industry body the GSM association.

The consortium's approach to simplify application development and distribution is echoed by software firm Adobe.

The company has announced that it will begin to offer its AIR platform on mobile devices, starting with phones running Google's Android operating system.

AIR is currently available on desktops and allows developers to build desktop applications for services that are more commonly found in the browser.

For example, there are a number of Twitter applications that use AIR.

Until now it has been unavailable on smart phones.

The technology could make it easier for developers to create and publish apps that can run on many different platforms at the same time.

Apple has traditionally spurned some Adobe software - such as Flash - on its iPhone.

However, Adobe has now built a tool that allows developers to build an app for phone running AIR and easily publish a slightly different version which should also run on the iPhone.

"We enable developers and content publishers to deliver to any screen," said David Wadhwani of Adobe.

The announcements were made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which runs from 15-18 February.

The event as a whole went really well with a great mix of sessions from our executive leadership, Peters Suh CEO of JIL (Joint Innovation Lab), Jon S. von Tetzchner - Opera Co-founder, Sam Dean - LastMinute.com, Peter-Paul Kock, Wolfram Kriesing and the Vodafone technical developer team who highlighted the Vodafone 360 cross-platform proposition. All MC'd by Mike Butcher from TechCrunch.

Aside from the developer day, Vodafone also sponsored the App Lounge at App Planet. Here there was a chance to chill out from the buzz of the show, with plenty of discussion around developing widgets.

Also during the event, 5 widget developers who attended the Vodafone 360 Developer day took to the stage for the Vodafone App Star Auditions, to show off their widgets in front of our live audience. The audience then voted for the top three winners (1st SmartRunner, 2nd Mobnotes and 3rd InfoBus Sevilla) via twitter.

So if you didn't get a chance to enter, don't forget we're still running the Vodafone App Star competition where you have a chance to win €100,000, deadline for entries is only 6 weeks away!

Don't despair if you didn't make it out to Barcelona. We're currently very busy getting the content ready to make it available to everyone and hope to have it live on our developer website next week.

Head over to our developer blog to find out more about our speakers and sessions.

Kaspersky Lab publishes its annual report on threat evolution in 2009

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the publication of its annual report on the evolution of spam and malware threats. The main trend in 2009 was the ever greater sophistication of malware technologies. Meanwhile, there were global epidemics, cybercriminals added to their repertoire of Internet scams and the number of new malicious programs started to level out.
A new level of threat and global epidemics

In 2009, malicious programs became significantly more complex. For instance, malware families with rootkit functionality not only became much more widespread but also markedly more sophisticated. Such threats which deserve a mention are Sinowal (the bootkit), TDSS and Clampi.

Unfortunately, predictions by Kaspersky Lab experts that there would be an increase in the number of epidemics proved to be correct. As well as TDSS, Clampi and Sinowal a whole series of malicious programs achieved the status of a global epidemic. The biggest epidemic of the year was Kido (Conficker), which infected over 7 million computers around the world.

For the first time, an international group was created to combat such a widespread threat. Called the Conficker Working Group, it brought together antivirus companies, Internet service providers, independent research groups, educational institutions and regulatory bodies.

Over the last 3-4 years, China has become the leading source of malware. In 2009, Kaspersky Lab detected 73,619,767 network attacks, of which 52.7% originated from Internet resources in China.

China remained the leader in terms of numbers of potential victims, but the number of attacks dropped by 7%. Other countries which were near the top of the table last year, such as Egypt, Turkey, and Vietnam, now seem to be of less interest to cybercriminals. However, the number of attacks on users based in the US, Germany, Great Britain and Russia rose significantly.
Flourishing fraud

The frauds seen on the Internet are also becoming more and more varied. Common or garden phishing attacks have now been joined by sites which offer access to a range of services in return for payment. Russia is the leader in this area, and it is Russian scammers who have created a wide range of sites offering “services” such as “locate someone via GSM”, “read private messages on social networking sites”, “collect information”, etc.

In 2009, rogue antivirus solutions were increasingly used by scammers and cybercriminals. Today, rogue software is not only spread using other malicious programs (e.g. Kido) but also by Internet advertisements.
Alternative platforms

Operating systems for mobile phones and Mac OS X are attracting more and more attention from malware writers. In 2009, even Apple took notice of the threat by building an antivirus scanner of sorts into the new version of its OS. 2009 also saw the first malicious programs detected for iPhones (Ike worms), the first piece of spyware for Android and the first incidents of signed malicious programs for Symbian smartphones.

The appearance of Backdoor.Win32.Skimer, the first malicious program targeting ATM machines, was a unique event in 2009. Once an ATM was infected using a special access card, criminals were able to perform a number of illegal actions: withdraw all the funds in the ATM, or acquire data from cards used in the ATM.
Spam

Despite the effects of the crisis, spam in email traffic did not decline. The volume of unsolicited mail worldwide actually grew, albeit by only 3.1%. The average amount of spam in all email traffic in 2009 stood at 85.2%. The US was the biggest single source (16%), while Russia accounted for 8.5% of the world’s spam.

The main innovation in spam in 2009 was the use of YouTube for video spam. Another novelty was the use of mp3 attachments in emails.
What lies ahead?

The experts at Kaspersky Lab expect to see a gradual shift in the types of attacks on users: from attacks via websites and applications towards attacks originating from file sharing (P2P) networks. At the same time, malware is expected to become even more sophisticated.

The experts also forecast a rough ride for the iPhone and devices running the Android OS, as the number of malicious programs targeting them grows. Meanwhile, the decline in gaming Trojans witnessed in 2009 is likely to be repeated for rogue antivirus programs in 2010.
