I’m a big fan of the LG GW620 InTouch Max. It was a great introduction to Android for first time smart phone users, with many fans including the Gadget Show’s John Bentley. Now it looks like LG have decided to create an android phone for the serious smartphone user.

Intel Puts Google's Android on Atom Smartphones

ntel has ported Google's Android mobile operating system to smartphones based on its Atom microprocessors, an Intel executive said Tuesday.

Intel already has Android running on Atom-based smartphones and certain customers are interested in using it, said Renee James, general manager of Intel's software and services group, on the sidelines of the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing. She did not provide further details of the project.

"Intel is enabling all OSes for Atom phones," James said.

The move is part of Intel's aim to further drive its Atom microprocessors into smartphones, a market dominated by chips from Arm Holdings. Software has to be made specifically for the architecture of a microprocessor. Intel builds chips on the x86 architecture, while Arm chips are based on RISC (reduced instruction set computer).

Google originally designed Android to be used on common mobile phone processors made with Arm technology, but since Android is open-source software, other companies have changed it so it can be used with other chips.

Acer, the world's second-largest PC vendor, ported Android to netbooks based on Atom microprocessors last year. MIPS Technologies, which sells its own chips based on the MIPS (Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages) architecture, ported Android for use in a range of devices that use MIPS chips, including set-top boxes, digital picture frames and home media centers.

"Now how do we make it easier for developers to express themselves and share the experiences they create?" The position of developer advocate for games at Google is "both inward- and outward-facing," he added.

DeLoura is well-known within the video game industry. For the past three years, DeLoura has been performing CTO-level game technology consulting for a variety of companies, and has been writing about game engines and middleware. He's also on the board of the International Game Developers Association and the OneBigGame charity, and served as a judge for the Independent Games Festival and the recently-announced White House-backed Apps for Healthy Kids Competition.

Prior to his time as a consultant, he was VP of technology at publisher GreenScreen Interactive, technical director at Ubisoft San Francisco and manager of developer relations at Sony Computer Entertainment America. He was also formerly editor-in-chief for Gamasutra sibling publication Game Developer magazine and worked as lead engineer at Nintendo of America.

HTC Studying Whether to Have Own Smartphone Software

HTC Corp., Taiwan’s largest mobile- phone maker, is studying whether to equip phones with its own operating system, a move that may intensify competition with Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

“We continue to assess, but that requires a few conditions to justify” having our own system, Cheng Hui-ming, chief financial officer of the Taoyuan, Taiwan-based company, said in a phone interview today.

HTC’s own operating system would enable the company, which designs and produces phones using Google and Microsoft software, to reduce its reliance on outside developers. HTC is among possible bidders for Palm Inc., three people familiar with the situation said this month.

“If you look at the successful smartphone players, like Apple and Research in Motion, a reason for their success is that they have their own platform,” said Steven Tseng, who rates HTC “buy” at RBS Asia Ltd. in Taipei and favors the company having its own operating system in the long term. “The negative is the amount of resources they’d need to allocate.”

Cheng declined to comment on whether HTC has studied Palm for possible acquisition. HTC has no timeframe for deciding whether to have its own platform, he said.

‘Multiple Factors’

“There are many multiple factors to be considered together, rather than a simple statement as to own or not to own” proprietary software, Cheng said.

HTC declined 1.4 percent to close at NT$389 in Taiwan trading.

Palm is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer possibly as early as this week, according to the people familiar with the matter. They declined to be identified because a sale hasn’t been announced.

HTC is the world’s largest maker of phones using Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform and was the first to release a handset based on Google’s Android. This year, it unveiled its low-cost Smart mobile phone based on Qualcomm’s BREW system.

The market share of smartphones using Palm’s WebOS was 0.7 percent in 2009, while handsets using Symbian, Nokia Oyj’s main smartphone software, accounted for 46.9, according to Gartner Inc.

Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry had 19.9 percent, Apple’s iPhone 14.4 percent and Google’s Android operating system 3.9 percent, according to the February statement from Gartner, of Stamford, Connecticut.

Android Suffers Drop in Mobile Advertising Index but Outshines in SE-Asia

Mobile adverts served to Android smartphones have been enjoying huge success in terms of click-through rates in South East Asia. But on the global front, it has dropped by around 50% and into fifth place, with Symbian retaining top spot and Feature Phone handsets, the only handset OS to make consistent gains over the last four months, claiming second space, reports mobile advertising vendor, Smaato.

Smaato's metrics are based upon 36 mobile ad networks and over 4 billion ad requests served in the Smaato Network of more than 3,300 registered mobile publishers in March 2010.

Worldwide CTR Index (Click Through Rate) by Handset Operating System

The performance of different operating systems in March shows Symbian's lead decrease slightly, as Feature Phone handsets and Windows Phone make significant increases. The CTR Index (Click Through Rate) differs from 35 (Blackberry) to 156 (Symbian), compared to February where the spread was between 51 (Blackberry) and 147 (Symbian).

Android has suffered the most in the latest metrics, with a drop of almost 50% as its global CTR Index fell from 110 in February, to 58 in March. This has been the second consecutive month that Android has dropped. Feature Phone handsets have been building momentum since the first Smaato Metrics Report in December. Each month it has made consistent gains on the competition in the CTR Index, from 84 in December, to 91 in January, to 107 in February and now at 123 in March.

The Index consists of the average CTR of all devices and this number is set to 100.

Symbian's lead has shortened in the CTR Index table and remains the OS to beat with regards to CTR performance in mobile advertising. Feature Phones have been making steady ground, where as Apple remains consistent across February and March (89).

Symbian is continuously the best performing OS regarding the CTR worldwide. After strong performances in January and February, Android lost its second position in March.

Fill Rate Worldwide

Smaato's metrics demonstrates the performance of mobile ad networks globally and the fill rate is measured as the percentage of ads delivered per ad request and varies by different factors, like country, device and content type.

The fill rates of the global top 10 ad networks, increased from February to March. The best performing mobile ad network in the Smaato worldwide Index had a fill rate of 93% in March 2010, which is up 21% points compared to February. Despite the increases across the board, the average for worldwide ad network fill rate performance remains steady at 28% (from 29% in the previous month), with six of the top 10 ad networks performing above this average. This data helps to prove that an ad network aggregation system can help partners achieve the best possible return and the highest possible fill rate, across the globe.

Fill Rate USA

The average fill rate of mobile ad networks in the USA rose to 41% in March, recovering from February's average of 35%. Five of the top eight ad networks performed above the average and the US average fill rate, remains significantly higher than the global fill rate of 28%. In line with the global fill rates, the top US ad networks experience significant increases from February, with the strongest network rising from 78% up to 94% fill rate.

Spotlight on South-East Asia

The performance of the different handset operating systems compiled for Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines gives an interesting insight into the variances in handset usage and how they compare on a global basis.

Where Android has dropped in the global CTR Index this month and in February was in third place in South East Asia, this month it has stormed into the top spot. As the volume of Android devices is still too small to compare, the chart shows Android phones outside the ranking. Rather than dramatically increasing its CTR however, it seems that other leading handset OS have dropped. Apple iPhone and iPodTouch has more than halved its CTR Index from February, falling from 164 to 71 in March. Symbian also suffered a drop in the CTR Index, from 127 in February to 109 in March.

Feature Phones repeated its gains on a global scale in South East Asia, jumping from a CTR Index of 85 to 116 and second place behind Android. Feature Phones are the only handset OS to make consistent gains across the globe in the last four month.

Fill Rate South-East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines)

This is the second time Smaato has compiled the fill rates and revealed the CTR Index in the South-East Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines.

The fill rates shows a fairly even spread between the top five ad networks, with only 10 percentage points separating AN1 (49%) and AN5 (39%). This shows that South East Asia is still a very competitive market in terms of fill rates between ad networks.

South-East Asia's average fill rate of 36% and although it can't match the fill rate of the US, it's still considerably higher than the worldwide average of 28%.

The strong continued growth of mobile inventory in the South-East Asia region and the close by giants of India and China is attracting more advertisers and brands.

Multitasking 66 Apps on a Nokia N82 with Stock Rom

A short clip of the Multitasking power of the S60 operating system. The N82 was released in 2007 with S6v3.1 OS and can multitask better than the super smartphones of today. The video shows a total of 66 active applications without a hint us OS/UI slowdown. A reboot of the N82 reveals only 88.7MB of Ram yet it constantly outperforms phones and OSes that are equipped with 256MB Ram or more. Even after 66 applications, there was over 11MB of Ram remaining to open other applicaions. My video and the 62 App video of the Samsung i8910 goes to show the great multitasking ability that Symbian users have enjoyed for years.

ZLaunchy - latest version: 0.2

ZLaunchy was written mainly for those who like the way Windows Mobile dialer allows searching for contacts in a T9-like way - so that finding Adam means choosing 2326 in the phone application. ZLaunchy uses the same idea to run programs on your device. What it does is gives you a dialer keypad and when you type in a series of digits, it searches for all programs that match - for example to start Internet Explorer, start typing 4683 - Internet Explorer and Internet Sharing should show up in the result list.

This application performs a search using all items in the Start Menu. It also skips showing application icons, which causes it to work faster than usual application launchers. This makes ZLaunchy a perfect candidate for an application that's bound to a hardware key (using system settings) and have it always handy when you want to find an application quickly. change setting to keep your device alive and tend to reset without quitting them. This app will restore settings to your preferred ones.

LG Electronics Demonstrates World's First ATSC Non-Real-Time 3D TV Broadcast

Spare broadband capacity utilized to cache 3D programming for more home entertainment options.

LAS VEGAS -- LG Electronics is paving the way for next-generation digital television (DTV) broadcast standards and advancing its leadership in 3D television with the first public demonstration of Non-Real-Time (NRT) technologies contemplated in ATSC 2.0, a new activity of the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC). The world's first broadcast of NRT 3D TV takes place at the 2010 National Association of Broadcasters convention which runs through April 15 in Las Vegas.

LG's NRT technology takes advantage of unused bandwidth in broadband digital TV transmissions. While viewers are watching live ATSC DTV broadcasts, the NRT function can simultaneously cache other broadcasts in the background onto hard drives or USB flash drives so the content can be viewed at a later time. LG has successfully tested the ATSC-compatible technology in Korea with SBS, one of the country's premier terrestrial broadcasters.

"LG is at the forefront of developing this technology for digital broadcasting," said Dr. Woo Paik, president and chief technology officer, LG Electronics Inc. "NRT 3D broadcast is a prime example of our leadership in 3D TV, and it fits very well with LG's efforts in the developments associated with the newest ATSC technologies."

The demonstration at the NAB show, conducted in cooperation with SBS, is built around prototype LG NRT- and 3D-capable HDTVs to record and replay 3D ATSC programming stored on an external USB drive. The experimental broadcast showcases the capabilities of emerging ATSC 2.0 technologies, expected to be the next enhancement in the ATSC family of standards, perhaps as early as 2011 or 2012.

LG expects NRT technology to have enormous commercial potential with broadcasters and content providers taking full advantage of the flexibility of ATSC broadcasting to deliver additional services such as Internet radio and video-on-demand (VOD).

For consumers who have already bought or plan to purchase LG 3D HDTVs, the company plans to offer a software upgrade so they can take full advantage of additional content through the NRT and 3D ATSC services when they become commercially available in the years ahead.

Also at the NAB show, LG Electronics is demonstrating how Internet connectivity related to ATSC 2.0 will help enhance the DTV viewing experience. With a hybrid terrestrial transmission and IP (Internet-Protocol) service, Korean broadcaster KBS and LG will showcase enriched content for viewers and exciting applications for broadcasters. The demonstration will highlight features on prototype LG broadband TVs, including an advanced electronic service guide, VOD capability, and clip services.

Microsoft is showcasing a common set of solutions and technologies for playback, delivery and content protection that allow anytime, anywhere access to content across a wide range of devices. Recent advances demonstrated at NAB include the following:

* Microsoft is working with Intel Corporation and Broadcom Corp. to deliver Silverlight support for system-on-a-chip (SOC) reference designs that will provide the complete Microsoft Silverlight platform to set-top boxes, connected TVs, Blu-ray Disc players and other consumer devices.
* Enhanced functionality for Internet Information Services (IIS) Media Services 4, which includes multiplatform delivery with content protection, smooth multicast support and integrated encoding support.
* Microsoft PlayReady, the company's content access and protection technology, now adopted by more than 150 companies, has secured an additional customer implementation — Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. PlayReady is compatible with the Protected Interoperable File Format (PIFF), version 1.1 specification, which is now available at http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/685/protected-interoperable-file-format.
* As announced at MIX10, Microsoft now offers new tools and resources to enable developers to take advantage of the rich Silverlight and Microsoft XNA feature set to create and deploy high-performance, compelling mobile applications for Windows Phone 7.
* Microsoft Mediaroom 2.0, the next version of the world's most deployed Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) platform, announced at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year, enables TV service providers to deliver advanced TV services to multiple screens including the TV, Windows Media Center, Web browsers (for Windows-based PCs and Macs), Xbox 360, and compatible smartphones.


Microsoft also released a new solution, the Silverlight Rough Cut Editor (RCE), to simplify the editing and publishing process for delivering exciting content to the Web. RCE is a real-time, cross-platform, cross-browser video and metadata editing solution that dramatically speeds content creation and supports robust advertising delivery scenarios. The solution also eliminates the need for transcoding and additional storage if operating on top of IIS Smooth Streaming content.

"Two critical goals for coverage of the Vancouver Olympics were speed of delivery and cost," said Perkins Miller, senior vice president of Digital Media, NBC Sports. "The Silverlight Rough Cut Editor helped us achieve those goals by enabling editors to cut short-form highlights from long-form live coverage through a Web-based editor and have them published to the site within seconds — even while the event was still in progress. This dramatically reduced our costs and made it easier and faster to deliver video."

In addition to the Rough Cut Editor, Microsoft released a new set of solution frameworks that will make it easier for media organizations to create and enhance digital content while, at the same time, building their media services: Silverlight Analytics Framework, Silverlight Media Framework 2.0, Media Business Intelligence Framework, and Editorial Collaboration and Mobile Journalism.

Microsoft and select partners are showcasing a number of products and solutions at the Microsoft booth (SL220), spanning the entire content life cycle. Digital content management demonstrations will be shown by Avanade and Xytech, DAVID Systems GmbH, and TechPath. Industry partners Media Aspects, a division of Interdyn AKA; Ascent Media; Capgemini U.S. LLC; CGS Inc.; Decentrix Inc.; Hitachi Consulting Corp.; RightsLine Software Inc.; and Streamline Solutions will demonstrate simplified digital supply chain management. Microsoft also will showcase how to deliver unique digital marketing and experiences across multiple screens with demonstrations from CSG Systems' Content Direct, FAST, Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft Mediaroom, Windows Media Center, UI Centric and Lumio.

McDonald's chooses NAVTEQ advertising service for first pilot mobile campaign in Finland.

CHICAGO -- NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world, has released results of its first location targeted campaign in Europe by a global brand advertiser, McDonald's.

The campaign, powered by NAVTEQ LocationPoint™ Advertising, enabled McDonald's to deliver location-relevant mobile ads to users of Nokia Ovi Maps when they were within a certain distance of McDonald's 82 restaurants in Finland. The ad campaign promoted a McDonald's cheese burger for 1 euro, resulting in a solid, measureable ROI, a 7.0% click-thru rate. Consumers clicked on the ads to see promotion details and receive driving or walking directions to the nearest store location. Of users who clicked through, 39% selected the click-to-navigate option which offered "drive to" or "walk to" navigation to the nearest McDonald's location using Nokia's Ovi Maps navigation.

NFL Mobile provides the latest news and information, including in-depth profiles of current players and draft prospects, team updates, mock drafts, expert analysis and more. The new app also lets fans watch NFL Network, including live coverage of the 2010 NFL Draft, which will be held at New York’s Radio City Music Hall from Thursday, April 22 to Saturday, April 24.
