Touchscreen IC suppliers cutting prices to win orders

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Major touchscreen solution suppliers including Synaptics, Elan Microelectronics, Cypress and Atmel have recently cut prices for particular customers or models by 10-20%, as a move to secure orders from the handset sector in the second half of 2010, according to industry sources.

Taiwan-based second-tier players including Sitronix Technology, Weltrend Semiconductor, Ene Technology and Integrated Technology Express (ITE), have slashed their prices more aggressively, the sources noted.

Demand for touchscreen controllers have extended from smartphones to multimedia and even to mid- and high-end feature phones, the sources explained.

Sales of the mid-range feature phones launched by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics (LGE) that are built with resistive touchscreen controllers have been successful, encouraging other vendors to follow suit, the sources added.

Nokia reportedly plans to also venture into the segment with plans to launch 3-5 mid-range touchscreen handsets in the second half, the sources revealed.
