LG Electronics Provides a 'Dose of HD' for the Healthcare Industry at HIMSS 2010

New UL Hospital Grade HDTVs, Monitors Provide Convenience, Added Benefits for Healthcare Providers and Patients.

ATLANTA -- Providing patients with the comforts of home, LG Electronics is introducing a wide array of products – healthcare HDTVs, network monitors, network attached storage and digital signage solutions – at the 2010 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference and Exhibition (HIMSS).

On display this week in LG's booth (#4403) are four UL Hospital Grade listed HDTVs and monitors as well as product solutions that provide cost-effective and secure technology to assist in the storage and sharing of digital records.

"At a time when the healthcare industry is undergoing significant changes, LG Electronics is looking ahead to anticipate industry needs and adapting our products to exceed our customers' expectations," said Tim Wright, director of LG Healthcare Commercial Products, LG Electronics USA, Inc. "From patient rooms to nurses stations to rehab facilities, LG offers products that will provide a Full HD experience, making patients feel at ease."

A "Dose of HD"

Designed specifically for the healthcare industry, LG's 22-, 26- and 32-inch class* UL Listed Hospital Grade LCD HDTVs combine patient-centric features with technologies aimed at easing the overall integration.

For the patient room environment, the LG3DCH series has "invisible speakers" – which hide the speaker grill in a sleek bezel – as well as pillow speaker ports that allow patients to control the volume of their TV at the bedside and feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. This combination of sophisticated style and smart technology enhances the look and feel of the room and provides a pleasant diversion during the hospital stay, making the room more comfortable for patients and families. Available in 22- and 32-inch class* models, the LG3DCH series also features Power Saving modes that provide added energy savings for hospitals looking to upgrade technology and still save energy.

Also on display is LG's line of LCD HD capable monitors (models M3703CCBH and M4224CCBH) that can function as an in-room TV using an additional tuner source. With Full HD 1080p resolution, the 42-inch class* M4224CCBH offers patients the same high-definition viewing experience they may find at home, making their hospital stay more enjoyable. The 37-inch class* M3703CCBH features a Super IPS 178 degree viewing angle that allows patients and their visitors to view content and information at almost any angle.

At HIMSS 2010, LG's HDTVs and HD-capable monitors designed for patient rooms are displaying healthcare programming from leading content providers, including:

* LodgeNet Interactive Corporation - The leading provider of interactive media and connectivity solutions designed to meet the unique needs of guest-based businesses, brings its expertise to the healthcare market with compelling in-room content.
* GetWellNetwork Inc. – Uses the LG in-room television monitor to entertain, educate and engage patients in their care through its patent pending interactive patient care system, which is exclusively endorsed by the AHA. GetWellNetwork helps automate both clinical and service recovery processes that enable hospitals and caregivers to improve patient satisfaction and gain operational efficiencies.
* Allen Technologies Inc. – Through its VIGO system, Allen provides the tools to facilitate and integrate education into everyday nursing practice and make bedside patient education meaningful and effective.

Multi-Room Patient Rehab/Long-Term Care Dwellings

LG's LD360L series is designed specially for patient rehabilitation and long-term care (LTC) multi-dwelling facilities to provide patients a TV with a sleek modern look – instantly updating their surroundings – as well as advanced HD technology and easy-to-use remote controls. This series features Bed 1/2/3/4 controllability, allowing up to four different remote frequencies in one room, making it the perfect choice for large facilities with several patients sharing a room.

In a multi-dwelling environment, the multi-bed control allows residents to adjust their own TV as needed without the worry and frustration of altering settings on their neighbors' TVs. With this option, facilities can now have more than one LG HDTV operating in the same room without conflicting signals.

Available in 26-inch and 32-inch class* models, the LD360L series also comes standard with a seven button membrane remote, a standard setup remote, and large font on-screen displays. The large, simplified remote is ergonomically designed with only seven large buttons, enabling patients to easily see the correct button to push and allowing for easy cleaning. Also, the on-screen display uses a larger font to help the aging patient see the channel/network that they want to watch.

Content in LG's patient rehab/LTC dwelling area at HIMSS 2010 is provided by The Window Channel, a new video image company that deals exclusively in long-play, native high definition, ambient scenic footage. These videos also contain the naturally occurring ambient sound, recorded in stereo, from the location, creating the effect of a still photograph come to life on screen in Full HD. This imagery is designed to help the resident/patient relax in what could be a stressful time for them.

Streamlining Nurses Stations

In addition to products for patient rooms and rehab facilities, new information technology products, such as LG's Network Monitors and Network Attached Storage, enable ease-of-use for hospital staff, decreasing system maintenance and the need for IT support.

With SmartVine™ Network Desktop monitors and Network Attached Storage (NAS), LG Electronics is providing a way to connect to existing PCs and redistribute computer resources enabling hospital staff to access patient information quickly and easily.

SmartVine monitors allow up to 11 nurses, administrative staff or doctors to share the same PC. Each user runs their own applications on each monitor, as if they had their own PC. Compared to multiple computers, this provides easier installation and reduced maintenance, IT support and energy consumption. The monitors are available in 17-inch class* (4:3 aspect ratio) and 19-inch class* (16:9 aspect ratio) sizes.

Additionally, LG's N2B1 network attached storage (NAS) device offers the convenience of sharing data, allowing hospital staff to utilize information over a network. NAS offers advanced data management with data archiving, automatic disc back up features and up to 2 TB of storage through two-bay configurations, allowing hospital's data to be stored securely in the system. The unit is also compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems allowing for versatile use in healthcare environments.

Information Sharing with Digital Signage

LG's digital signage solutions can be integrated in place of traditional dry erase boards to help securely manage surgery schedules and more.

From nursing stations to patient waiting areas, the 47-inch class*, M4715CCBA, and 42-inch class*, M4224C-BA, HD LCD monitors bring a variety of high-definition display options. With Full HD 1080p resolution, these models feature new LAN and video wall control for easy scheduling and dissemination of content. With slim bezels these LCDs blend easily into any space. Split Zoom capabilities for video wall applications provide a versatile, cost-effective alternative to projectors and standard CRTs that both hospital staff and visitors can appreciate.

Using LG high-definition (HD) monitors, Vericom's ChannelCare™ digital signage delivers a variety of high-resolution messages, including HD video to carefully targeted healthcare audiences. This proprietary content can be displayed in multi-channel formats to emphasize the many different ways a hospital can communicate internally with its patients, consumers, physicians and employees with a focus on promoting quality and safety.

Hospital staff will also appreciate LG's 42-inch class* M4212T touch screen monitor on display in the booth. This model allows for easy way-finding services and educational information at the touch of a button for patients and guests in common areas. Ideal for a hospital lobby video wall, this model also features a Super IPS 178 degree viewing angle that enables patients, doctors and others to see educational content and care information from virtually any angle. LG is incorporating technology from Four Winds Interactive, to provide the digital signage software for this touch screen wayfinding solution.

Satilla Regional Medical Center Selects Ruckus Wireless for Next-Generation Wi-Fi at Main Hospital and Nearby Medical Facilities

Ruckus ZoneFlex 802.11n "Smart Wi-Fi" System Chosen over Cisco and Aruba for Comprehensive Coverage, Consistent Performance and Affordability.

ATLANTA -- HIMSS Conference and Exhibition -- Ruckus Wireless™, the smart mobile networking company, announced that Satilla Regional Medical Center (Satilla) has selected the Ruckus ZoneFlex Smart 802.11n Wi-Fi system at the main hospital, as well as at two nursing home facilities and rehabilitative centers it operates in the area.

The Ruckus ZoneFlex system will replace a legacy Cisco wireless LAN environment to provide ubiquitous hospital-wide wireless to support more than 300 Wi-Fi-enabled devices and a wide range of current and future applications such as the MEDITECH Healthcare Information System, PatientSafe IntelliDOT bedside medication system, Hospira Mednet Infusion System, RTLS/RFID, smart phones and guest Wi-Fi access.

"Wireless is no longer a technology of convenience for hospitals, it has become an absolute necessity," said Barry Rudd, director of information technology at Satilla Regional Medical Center, based in Waycross, Georgia. "Our fundamental goal was to find a wireless system that could deliver wire-like reliability and consistent coverage to every nook and cranny of our facility."

A full service hospital consuming over 370,000 square feet, Satilla Regional Medical Center employs more than 1,300 staff with more than 150 beds. The hospital comprises two conjoined buildings – one which was built in the 1950s, and a newer building constructed in 2002.

With a two-person networking team, Satilla wanted a wireless network that would be easy to install and maintain. "We're just like every other hospital in the country," said Terry Ammons, network administrator at Satilla. "We're quickly shifting to electronic methods of patient information management, and the many devices in use at any given time must be able to rely on a Wi-Fi network that doesn't fail."

RF interference was another concern for Satilla. "In such an interference-prone environment, achieving always-on reliability has been challenging at best with other wireless LAN systems we've used in the past," said Ammons. According to Satilla, the hospital evaluated a number of wireless suppliers including Aruba, Cisco, Meru and others but found that the Ruckus ZoneFlex system was best suited to address a wider range of RF and reliability issues that had been challenging its legacy wireless system.

According to Satilla, deploying a pervasive wireless network in both their new and old buildings presented a real challenge due to "RF-unfriendly" building materials, and the complexity of the facility that prohibited wireless signals from reaching many rooms that needed them. Additionally, microwaves, lab equipment and cordless phones wreaked havoc on stable wireless signals throughout the facility. "Our previous Cisco network simply couldn't perform – and it was a big problem for our doctors, nurses and lab technicians," said Ammons.

Dynamic Beamforming and a Smart 802.11n Implementation was the Wi-Fi Cure

With its previous wireless system, Satilla suffered from poor, inconsistent performance, low signal penetration and issues caused by interference from surrounding equipment. Cost and ease of use were two other major concerns.

"Most of the wireless suppliers we evaluated solve RF and coverage problems by throwing more APs at the problem," said Ammons. "Not only does this add cost and complexity but it also creates co-channel interference – and we already had loads of our own. We didn't want the biggest source of interference to be our own Wi-Fi network. We were really looking for a cost-effective wireless system that actually dealt with these issues more intelligently at the physical layer – and we finally found it."

According to Satilla, they considered a refresh on the network with Cisco 1142 802.11n APs but determined it would require 115 APs and three controllers. The hospital also considered Aruba's system that would have required 200 APs.

"Ruckus was able to deliver much more value with fewer APs and without all the traffic flowing through a central choke point," said Ammons. "We looked at everything from a future-proofing scenario. Because we plan to use the Wi-Fi network for video streaming, teleconferencing, as well as telemedicine in our ICU, we determined that the ZoneFlex system was fundamentally better to support these latency-sensitive applications because of its ability to provide adaptive and automatic RF control," he explained.

To unwire the hospital and additional medical facilities, Satilla purchased 65 ZoneFlex 7962 dual-band indoor 802.11n access points and two ZoneDirector 3100 controllers. The hospital also plans to utilize Ruckus smart wireless meshing technology, which will enable Ammons to deploy additional APs in areas where Ethernet cabling is not available – such as in training rooms and at the other medical facility sites.

Each ZoneFlex smart Wi-Fi access point integrates Ruckus' patented dynamic beamforming technology, a breakthrough Wi-Fi technology that constantly adapts to changes in the environment like those prevalent at Satilla hospital.

Ruckus "Smart Wi-Fi" technology leverages dynamic beamforming to focus Wi-Fi signals (or beams) only where they are needed and over the best performing RF transmission paths while continually steering wireless signals around obstacles and interference. Dynamic beamforming uses constant feedback from each client to ensure that the path selected is performing properly using standard acknowledgements built into the standard 802.11 protocol. The result is an adaptive system that minimizes packet loss, extends signal range and ensures more consistent performance at longer distances.

Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse: Wireless Is Transforming Healthcare

Historic opportunity for wireless technologies to transform healthcare by boosting efficiency, raising the quality of care and reducing costsDan Hesse is the first CEO of a major wireless company to keynote at HIMSS.

ATLANTA -- The healthcare industry is going through a major transformation and wireless technology will serve as a key enabler of this shift, noted Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) CEO Dan Hesse in his keynote at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference.

During his keynote remarks, Hesse shared examples of advanced wireless technologies and how they are enabling healthcare providers today to connect people, devices, and systems in new and transforming ways. He also noted future trends such as the increasing use of wireless data transactions and the growing significance of 4G technology.

"With rising healthcare costs and numerous challenges impacting every aspect of care, healthcare providers are using wireless to increase efficiency and better manage costs," said Dan Hesse, CEO, Sprint Nextel. "Healthcare providers are going even further by using wireless to achieve some truly remarkable, transformative advancements in delivering faster, better patient care."

With wireless technology being an essential part of everyday life for nearly 277 million Americans, it is changing the paradigm of how healthcare is administered. Internet savvy consumers today expect immediate access to health information and care anytime, anyplace. Last year, 89 percent of wireless Internet users sought health information online*. Similarly, caregivers are using smartphones equipped with medical applications for instant, secure access to lab results, x-rays, vital signs, drug-to-drug interactions, and other vital medical records. These trends further validate the key role that wireless will play in shaping the future of healthcare by enabling innovative and cost-effective approaches in delivering quality care.

"Mobile wireless applications within healthcare are rapidly increasing and becoming a more common sight within the hospital environment opening a wealth of opportunities for workflow solutions and simply making information more accessible," explains Zachary Bujnoch, an analyst at the research firm Frost & Sullivan. "In the remote healthcare setting with the continuing decline of home telephone lines and the less than universal availability of broadband, mobile technologies are shaping up to be a cornerstone for information transmission in the future of remote medicine."

4G Technology - Game changer for healthcare

As information transactions between healthcare providers become more data-intense, like live streaming video, on-demand applications and virtual office visits: wireless networks will need a lot more bandwidth to handle these data-centric exchanges and to do it instantly. 4G technology holds the promise of taking mobile medicine to another level in healthcare.

With a recent study by ABI Research predicting 2.5 billion connected data-centric devices in use worldwide by 2014, 4G technology will make it easier for healthcare providers to expand their reach to advanced wireless devices beyond just smartphones. Imagine what these connected devices could mean for mobile health care, remote monitoring and home healthcare. For example, 4G could enable:

* real-time virtual collaboration between colleagues across states;
* large radiology images to be accessed from anywhere to speed-up diagnostics and care plan execution;
* live surgery to be broadcast through a wireless video transmission in real time without having to wire an operating room;
* an ambulance to broadcast live video of EMTs treating a patient while on the way to the hospital. The EMTs could upload patient stats and stream live video to the on-call doctor, shortening the time from patient arrival to surgery.

These are all powerful scenarios that 4G-connected devices and applications would be capable of enabling.

SPRINT HEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS

Healthcare Today

Telemedicine- If doctors use wireless applications to remotely monitor patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or obesity, the annual savings could amount to approximately $21 billion due to a reduction in hospitalization and nursing home costs. Sprint partners with American TeleCare, Inc. to deliver a reliable wireless connectivity solution. American TeleCare uses a video-enabled solution to monitor, observe and intervene with the patient, preventing hospitalization. Powered by Sprint 3G Mobile Broadband, these solutions combine video conferencing, patient interface and connectivity to biometric devices.

"Fundamental to delivering the right remote care is a reliable, uniform, and predictable communication network like Sprint's," said Lawrence Diamond, vice president of business development at American TeleCare. "Sprint's commitment to the health care sector is unparalleled in the telecommunication industry. They have a true understanding of their customers' needs and work with their partners to solve their challenges."

Another example of remote monitoring is the use of the Sprint network with the Alzheimer's Association Comfort Zone(TM), powered by Omnilink. A web-based application, Comfort Zone, is the first comprehensive location management system designed specifically to give people with Alzheimer's more independence and provides their caregivers options for some peace of mind.

"Alzheimer's poses immediate safety concerns for people living with the disease and enormous challenges and stress for their caregivers," says Steve Hudson, vice-president, strategy and development for Omnilink. "Comfort Zone is a secure, password-protected application that allows families to determine location and receive alerts all while the person with Alzheimer's retains the emotional security of familiar routines and surroundings."

Home Healthcare - Studies show that patients recover more quickly in their own environment; as a result nurses that care for at-home patients end up spending a lot of time on the road. Sprint, in partnership with several application partners such as CellTrak, the leading homecare and hospice solution partner offers point of care solutions that allow better management of time and travel and help simplify the business by reducing unnecessary paperwork, automating care plan workflows, providing mobile access to patient data and streamlining billing and reimbursements.

With a Sprint smart phone and the CellTrak solutions, caregivers can send immediate updates and status alerts back to their main offices, as well as access locations and routes while in the field.

Sprint also partners with Intel to provide the Intel Health Guide. This solution using Sprint 4G, enables patients to engage in video calls to consult with their clinicians and view multimedia educational content about their condition, empowering them to more proactively manage their health.

In-building solutions - In collaboration with GE Healthcare, Sprint continues to deploy Custom Network Solutions that are transforming hospitals across the country into a fully-converged infrastructure. For example, at Methodist Healthcare in San Antonio, Tex., this solution enables clinicians to extend the reach of patient care beyond the hospital walls and provides visitors the ability to use personal wireless devices and access the internet throughout the hospital.

"Our decision to collaborate with Sprint and GE Healthcare underscores our commitment to leveraging advanced wireless applications and technologies to help meet the needs of our tech-savvy physicians and staff, while managing our growing wireless capabilities as efficiently and effectively as possible," said Eddie Cuellar, CIO of Methodist Healthcare.

Future of Healthcare

Sprint 4G -While 3G today has enabled numerous cutting-edge services and devices that improve the delivery of healthcare, Sprint 4G will be the defining technology to offer endless possibilities for the future. For example, devices and applications connected with Sprint 4G could enable virtual collaboration between colleagues across states, broadcast live surgery through a wireless video transmission in real-time, and quickly download large radiology images on a mobile device to speed-up diagnoses and treatment. Unlike previous network generations, 4G is built entirely for data. 4G provides not only multi-megabyte per second download speeds, but also, because of its economic efficiency, it will offer more gigabytes of use per month at the same price as today's 3G plans.

Registration Open For Verizon Wireless’ How Sweet The Sound Competition To Find “The Best Church Choir In America” For 2010

Three New Communities for 14-City Choir Competition.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Registration is now open for How Sweet the Sound™, which is back in 2010 and bigger than ever with the expansion to three new communities. Now in its third year, How Sweet the Sound – a national competition created by Verizon Wireless – gives church choirs nationwide a chance to win the title of “The Best Church Choir in America” and up to $50,000 in cash and prizes.

How Sweet the Sound is much more than a singing competition for choirs – it is an opportunity to celebrate the unique ways that music connects people within their communities. Interested choir representatives can visit www.HowSweetTheSound.com or select Verizon Wireless retail locations for more information and to register for a chance to compete at concerts that will take place in the following cities:

* Houston
* St. Louis
* Washington, D.C.
* Philadelphia
* New York
* Detroit
* Chicago
* Atlanta
* Memphis, Tenn.
* Los Angeles
* Oakland, Calif.
* Jacksonville, Fla.
* Cleveland
* Charlotte, N.C.

“We are excited to expand How Sweet the Sound to add Jacksonville, Cleveland and Charlotte and to bring the joy of Gospel music to a new audience,” said Joe Saracino, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. “Gospel is a genre that attracts people from all walks of life, and we are proud to have created a program that celebrates music and recognizes the many volunteers who make church choirs such an important part of the community.”

Last year, Atlanta West Pentecostal Church Choir was named the overall winner for the How Sweet the Sound tour. According to choir director Brandon Frazier, the choir is using its prize money to record its first Gospel music album.

Entry and Selection Process
How Sweet the Sound invites choirs affiliated with a church or other church organizations (as defined by the organization’s tax-exempt ID number) within one of the 14 tour regions to enter (visit www.HowSweetTheSound.com for specific geography). Choirs interested in a chance to perform onstage in their cities must submit an application and audition video of no longer than three minutes. All registration forms and audition videos must be received by May 17, 2010. To register online, visit www.HowSweetTheSound.com. The audition video may be submitted by mail, uploaded online, or dropped off at participating Verizon Wireless Communications Stores. To enter by mail, send tapes to How Sweet the Sound, 125 E. Broad Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

Small and large choirs are eligible to enter the competition. The Few Voices category is for choirs consisting of six to 35 participants, while the Many Voices category is for choirs with 36 to 100 participants. Audition videos will be reviewed by professional music producers, music executives and Gospel radio personalities from each city. The judges will select up to 16 choirs – eight from each category – from each stop of the tour. The video submissions of the 16 choirs will be posted on www.HowSweetTheSound.com where members of the community can vote for their favorite choirs.

Once the online voting is complete, four choirs from each category will be selected to perform onstage in the regional event and two winners, one from each category, will win $10,000 for their choir. One overall winner will be selected at each regional concert, and each choir member from the overall winning choir will also receive a Verizon Wireless phone and a $50 gift card. The overall winning choir from each city will also advance to the grand finale where they will compete to win more than $25,000 in cash and prizes.

In addition, the Verizon Wireless V CAST People’s Choice Award will be given to the choir that captures the heart of the audience at each regional performance and at the grand finale performance. The V CAST People’s Choice Award winners will each receive $5,000.

Verizon Wireless will select a local artist in each of the 14 cities to represent their city during the How Sweet the Sound 2010 tour. The selected artists will create a custom fine art piece that pays tribute to the event in their hometowns.

HopeLine®
Verizon Wireless will collect no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories – in any condition and from any provider – at stores nationwide and in bins onsite at every How Sweet the Sound event as part of the company’s ongoing HopeLine program which raises awareness of domestic violence. The phones are either refurbished for reuse or recycled, and the proceeds from the program provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness. In 2009, more than 7,500 phones were collected during How Sweet the Sound, and at the grand finale, Verizon Wireless donated $25,000 to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) to support its Women of Color Leadership Initiative.

Additional details will be announced as the selection process gets underway. All details about the entry and selection process and the official rules can be found by visiting w

Sprint Says, Our $69.99 Is Worth More Than Their $69.99

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Not all pricing claims are the same. Starting today Sprint (NYSE: S) clears the confusion created by recent claims from AT&T and Verizon about pricing by launching a new marketing campaign where Sprint says, "Our $69.99 is worth more than their $69.99."

The advantages consumers get with Sprint's $69.99 Everything Data plan are highlighted in print and online advertisements and they include nationwide unlimited text and picture messaging, unlimited Web, unlimited GPS navigation and unlimited calling to any mobile in America, compared to AT&T and Verizon's $69.99 pricing plans, which are good for unlimited talk only. And Sprint's $69.99 plans are available with any phone while AT&T and Verizon's are limited to lower-end phones. Customers can learn more about the value of Sprint's plans by visiting any Sprint store or going online to www.sprint.com/anymobileanytime.

Sprint also features the return of CEO Dan Hesse in a TV advertisement as part of the campaign, building on previous successful campaigns that featured Hesse. In the spot, Hesse talks about how most people today use their phone for more than just talking but that with the $69.99 plans offered by AT&T and Verizon all you get is unlimited calling and none of the extras Sprint provides.

"Recently AT&T and Verizon have attempted to confuse the marketplace by lowering their pricing to $69.99, but theirs are for calling only," said Mike Goff, Sprint's vice president of corporate marketing. "This campaign will resonate with consumers by showing all the additional benefits consumers get beyond just calls with Sprint's $69.99 plan. In today's economic environment customers are interested in more than just voice pricing. They also want the best value for all the other things they rely on their wireless phone for and Sprint delivers."

Everything Data plans start at $69.99 per month and include Any Mobile, Anytime for unlimited calling with any U.S. wireless user, plus unlimited text, picture and video messaging, e-mail, Web browsing, social networking and more. For individuals and families, Sprint Everything Data plans include more value than competitors:

* Unlimited GPS navigation and exclusive applications, such as NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup MobileSM, are included in Sprint Everything Data plans at no additional charge.AT&T and Verizon charge an additional $9.99 per month for GPS navigation.
* Everything Data plans automatically enroll customers in the Sprint Premier loyalty program, which provides annual device upgrades, discounted accessories and other benefits.

In the print advertisement, the graphic included in this press release highlights some of the differences.

To find the Sprint plan that best fits their needs, customers can use the Sprint Plan Optimizer, available by logging into their My Sprint account at www.sprint.com. The Sprint Plan Optimizer analyzes the customer's past wireless usage and recommends the best plan based on that usage. Existing customers can switch Sprint plans at any time without extending their contract. New activations require a two-year service agreement.

Northwest Detroit, Michigan, Residents To Benefit From Verizon Wireless Network Enhancements

New Cell Site Means Clearer Reception, Fewer Dropped Calls.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site in northwest Detroit, which enables more customers to use their wireless phones to make calls; send and receive e-mail and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

“This new cell site was built to ensure that our customers in northwest Detroit can continue relying on their phones for everything from making calls and sending messages to surfing the Internet and getting e-mail,” said Greg Haller, president – Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “The most advanced device is only as good as the network it runs on. That’s why we aggressively invest in our Michigan network to increase coverage and capacity for our customers and continue to raise the bar in network reliability.”

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $55 billion since it was formed – $5.5 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Verizon Wireless Increases Wireless Broadband Capacity In Syracuse, Utica, And Watertown, New York, Areas

• Additional capacity needed to meet growing demand for 3G wireless broadband
• Part of $100+ million network investment in Upstate New York in 2010
• Meet one of Upstate New York’s local Test Men, Jack Brandes

SYRACUSE, NY — Verizon Wireless announced it has increased wireless broadband capacity on its Syracuse, Utica-Rome and Watertown-area networks. The additional capacity, added to 20 cell sites in Onondaga, Oswego, Oneida and Jefferson Counties, will help the company stay ahead of the growing demand for wireless Internet access as more of its customers switch to smartphones and adopt wireless data services. This is in addition to the 3G capacity that was added to 29 local sites in 2009.

“As wireless service evolves, more and more customers are discovering the benefits of wireless broadband connectivity,” said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “As more customers use our wireless data services, we need to increase our local network capacity to meet the growing demand and maintain our 3G network leadership.”

This network expansion is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. AT&T Helps Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Improve Workflow with Aeroscout Asset Tracking and Temperature Monitoring Solutions

Community Hospital Uses Wi-Fi RFID Solutions to Reduce Costs, Facilitate Compliance and Improve Patient Care.

AT&T* and AeroScout, announced that Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital contracted with AT&T for the deployment of AeroScout’s Wi-Fi RFID Asset Tracking and Temperature Monitoring solutions. These solutions facilitate Henry Mayo’s ongoing improvement of daily workflow, staff satisfaction and operational efficiency as well as reducing rental equipment costs and enhancing patient care and safety.

Henry Mayo is a 221-bed, not-for-profit community hospital and trauma center located in the heart of Santa Clarita Valley. Recently named a disaster resource center for Los Angeles County, Henry Mayo is responsible for providing medical equipment, medication and care to the entire community in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. To quickly locate and manage assets during an emergency and in day-to-day operations, the hospital’s management team - representing biomedical engineering, facilities, central supply, transportation, security, IT and disaster planning resources - sought a Real Time Location System (RTLS).

After evaluating solutions from four vendors, Henry Mayo selected AT&T along with AeroScout to assist Henry Mayo in improving efficiencies and reducing costs. AT&T, Henry Mayo’s primary telecommunications provider, recommended an asset tracking and management solution from AeroScout, a leading provider of unified asset visibility for the healthcare industry. The solution is designed to help the hospital track the use of key assets such as beds, wheelchairs, gurneys, patient-controlled analgesia pumps and infusion pumps. The hospital now has the ability to optimize asset management and equipment utilization levels throughout all departments. Additionally, AeroScout’s Temperature Monitoring solution is used to facilitate compliance with The Joint Commission regulations by ensuring refrigerator temperatures remain within the specified range for pharmaceuticals, tissue samples and other temperature-sensitive material.

“We chose to work with AT&T because of its ability to deliver solutions for all our telecommunications needs,” said Cindy Peterson, Chief Information Officer at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. “In addition, AeroScout’s robust set of solutions not only met our defined needs, but also supported many more potential uses. Another important factor was that AeroScout was able to leverage and complement our Cisco Unified Wireless Network, as this is the Wi-Fi network that we’ve made our standard.”

Henry Mayo has already begun to realize hard cost savings from its Wi-Fi RFID deployment. For example, the hospital has reduced its rental equipment expenses. In one instance, the hospital’s central supply department received a request to rent 10 infusion pumps. By checking in AeroScout’s MobileView software and locating unused equipment in the hospital’s ICU, no additional pumps were found to be necessary and the hospital saved on its rental costs.

AT&T and AeroScout will be showcasing all of their healthcare solutions in booths #6209 and #8055, respectively, at the HIMSS 2010 conference held in Atlanta, Georgia on March 1 - 3, 2010.

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

Sprint Offers Customers Peace of Mind When It Comes to Lost, Stolen or Damaged Devices

Between March 1 and March 31 Customers Can Sign up for Total Equipment Protection Despite Date of Device Purchase.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Approximately one in three wireless customers lose or damage their device within the first year of purchase. That is why many customers protect their investment by obtaining equipment protection. Customers typically must enroll within the first 30 days of a new activation or upgrade. However, Sprint (NYSE: S) is announcing that between March 1 and March 31, its Total Equipment Protection (TEP) will be available to all customers who did not initially enroll in the program at the time of purchase, giving current customers an opportunity to enroll in TEP and obtain a little peace of mind that their devices are covered.

During this open enrollment period Sprint customers have the opportunity to sign up for TEP to ensure their device is covered if it malfunctions, or is lost, stolen or damaged, no matter when they purchased or upgraded their device. Customers who sign up for TEP, quickly and easily get their wireless phones, smart devices, or connection cards replaced or repaired by visiting one of Sprint's 1,400 service and repair locations or by filing a claim with Sprint's insurance administrator, Asurion.

"Replacing a device can be inconvenient for customers, as well as costly, especially in today's economy," said John Carney, Sprint senior vice president of consumer marketing. "Sprint is offering a month-long open enrollment period to help give customers who did not enroll in the program within the first 30 days of purchasing or upgrading a device another chance to enroll and ensure they will be able to continue to use their devices without the worry of paying repair or full-replacement costs should the device ever become lost, stolen or damaged."

In addition to today's open enrollment announcement, Sprint has made additional customer-friendly changes to the TEP program within the last 12 months, including:

* Free Express delivery on replacement devices;
* Extended customer service hours;
* Ability for customers to open or track their claims on www.phoneclaim.com/sprint; and

Qualcomm Snapdragon Debuts in Korea with LG’s Regular Phone

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon debuts in Korea with LG Electronics’ the Maxx (LG-LG9400) through LG Telecom, the smallest mobile carrier in the local market.

Different from other countries the 1 Ghz mobile processor was adopted on a regular phone, not a smartphone. Beginning last year with Toshiba’s TG01, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon is gaining momentum. The mobile processor has been selected by several new smartphones, such as the Nexus One and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and a smartbook such as HP’s AirLife 100.

For 2G CDMA operator, LG first selected QSD 8650 on the Maxx, formerly known Arena Maxx, while other smartphones, including LG’s GW820 in the U.S., use the QSD 8250 chip set.

The Maxx has a 3.5-inch touch-screen with a finger-touch mouse function and a 5-megapixel camera module. It supports HD video, DivX, mobile TV(T-DMB), GPS, and Wi-Fi connectivity. At the user interface, the Maxx adopts a 3D UI that is enhanced over its predecessor, the Arena.

LG also plans to introduce a Snapdragon-based smartphone for SK Telecom and KT customers soon.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics’ own platform, the bada-based Wave, is scheduled to first release in April in Europe, and is expected to appear in the local market in the first half of this year. The Wave has adopted Samsung’s own 1 Ghz mobile processor.

Microsoft: “No Windows Phone 7 upgrade for Windows Mobile 6.x devices”

Microsoft’s tight hardware spec for Windows Phone 7 smartphones means that Windows Mobile 6.x devices – including HTC’s just-launched HD2 – can’t be upgraded.

Owners of HTC’s highly-praised HD2 touchscreen smartphone will be unable to upgrade the device to Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 software when the OS is released towards the end of the year.

Despite the HD2 meeting many of the criteria laid down in Microsoft’s ‘Chassis 1’ spec – including a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, high-res capacitive touch display, 5 megapixel camera and 3.5mm headphone jack – the phone will be ruled out for the simple reason that it has five buttons instead of the three mandated for all Windows Phone 7 devices.

That’s the official line from Microsoft, at any rate. Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region, told APC that the HD2 “doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons”, one of which needs to be a dedicated search key with the HD2 lacks.

HTC’s slick HD2 smartphone seems to have most of what Microsoft wants in a
Windows Phone 7 device, except for two buttons too many...

Not that Microsoft is singling our the HD2 as a phone or even HTC as a manufacturer. “Because we have very specific requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series the current phones we have right now will not be upgradable”, Kwan explained.

There could be more to this than just the sin of having two buttons too many, however: Tony Wilkinson, Business Operations Director for Microsoft Australia, told APC that “there are some hardware components that the HD doesn’t have”.

We’re not sure what those are because Microsoft has not revealed its complete recipe for Windows Phone 7 devices – that’s due to take place at this month’s MIX developer conference in Las Vegas – but we’ve heard that a pixel-pushing graphics chip might be on the checklist.

For its part, Microsoft says it will not abandon the current Windows Mobile 6.x platform once Windows Phone 7 arrives. The OS will be rebranded as Windows Phone Classic and retained for budget-minded smartphone buyers as well as business customers with 6.x-based apps.

“We think there are people who will want 6.5, and the 6.x platform has a lot of enterprise and line of business apps” Kwan says.

Microsoft will update Windows Mobile 6.5 to 6.5.3 before the Windows Phone Classic rebadging takes place, and Kwan says this will enhance the experience for 6.5 users.

“A lot of 6.5 applications have been built very much from the old paradigm of the stylus. Those legacy apps will be a lot more compatible on 6.5.3 because we have magnifier technology which lets you use your finger for navigating, even though it has a much bigger surface area.”

In 2014, Monthly Mobile Data Traffic from Embedded Computing Devices Will Exceed 2008 Total

Mobile data traffic from embedded computing devices is increasing so rapidly that if current trends continue, the total number of bytes sent each month in 2014 will equal the total equivalent traffic measured in 2008. This traffic originates from laptops, netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) that are equipped “out of the box” with cellular or mobile broadband modems.

ABI Research estimates that nearly 7,900 petabytes of data will be sent in 2014. Laptops and netbooks will account for about 90% of the traffic, with the contribution from MIDs and media tablets remaining fairly small.

According to senior analyst Jeff Orr, “Though the portion of laptops, netbooks and MIDs that are sold with embedded modems will not reach a majority within our forecast period, it will nonetheless be significant; the fact that network operators are offering modem-equipped netbooks at a subsidized price with a data service contract is an endorsement of the concept of embedded modems as opposed to add-on USB modems.”

Not surprisingly, the bulk of the data traffic comes in about equal measure from Europe, North America and parts of Asia. It is driven by the highly competitive nature of home and wireless broadband markets and the sheer number of computing devices owned by consumers in those parts of the world.

Will the rollouts of 4G networks in these areas drive much of this data traffic demand? Not at all: ABI Research forecasts indicate that even in 2014, 4G will handle only a tiny fraction of the traffic; the vast bulk will be handed about equally by 3G and 2G networks.
