Apple and Nokia not agree on the definition of "mobile device"

Head of social media communications company Nokia Skvayres Mark (Mark Squires) was unhappy with the statement of Steve Jobs that Apple is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile devices. Such a statement was read at Jobs' presentation planshetnika Apple iPad. Manual Nokia with similar allegations categorically disagrees and is ready to prove them wrong on the basis of documents, including information directly from Apple.

Discrepancy in the definition of who is bigger than Apple or Nokia has happened because of the different approaches to the concept of "mobile device". In the view of Jobs and Apple in particular, in general, "mobile" should be considered as any device that you can take with you. Ie MacBook computers are also a mobile device. Nokia defines as a more "traditional" - it is only mobile phones and smartphones. Notebooks - is a computer technique. So it turns out that the number of "mobile" set at the market - different. Nokia last quarter of 2009, has sold nearly 127 million phones, while Apple sold 8.7 million iPhone. But by the number of "apples" are added another 21 million iPod and 3.36 million Mac, which gives the total revenue from sales (including the new counting rules) to $ 15.68 billion (7.25 billion euros).

However, in this case, Apple's position is somewhat perplexing, since the rate of Nokia over the same period amounted to € 8,18 billion.

What Led Samsung Executive to kill Himself?

A 51-year-old executive of Samsung Electronics, who was lauded in 2006 as the company's best engineer, was found dead in an apparent suicide Monday, police said Tuesday night.

According to Gangnam Police Station in southern Seoul, the executive surnamed Lee was found dead at around 10:30 p.m. Monday on the grounds of his apartment in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul.

Police said they believed he jumped to his death, but refused to elaborate on why. A letter that appeared to be written by him was found at his home, but police have yet to make it public.

"He was found dead in an apparent suicide," said the chief investigator. "His distraught family confirmed this, but we cannot make public what he said in the letter."

There is much speculation over the cause of his death, however, police, Samsung and the man's family are remaining silent on the matter.

Among rumors being circulated are that he suffered from clinical depression or excessive stress from his work, or that he was the victim of an internal power struggle.

YTN, a cable news network, quoted an unidentified Samsung representative as saying the deceased had recently been at odds with his peers over promotions.

YTN also quoted another insider as saying senior executives at Samsung had tried to keep the news of his death from becoming public.

An investigator said, "It has been confirmed that he suffered chronic depression caused by an excessive workload. As far as I know, he complained in his letter that his work was too tough to stand."

Lee was hired by Samsung Electronics in 1990 and worked in its memory chip division, the company said.

In 2006, he was selected as the "Samsung Fellow," an annual award granted to top engineers at the company. The following year, he was promoted to vice president of the world's largest chip manufacturer.

Android Laptop Review: Hivision PWS700CA

This is a worlds first video-review of an ARM9 Powered Android Laptop, the PWS700CA by Shenzhen based Hivision, find more info at: http://hvsco.com/ProductsView.asp?art...

It is based on a Rockchip RK2808 600mhz ARM926 processor, 128SDRAM, 7" 800x480 screen, 720p Video playback support, WiFi, Ethernet, audio input/output and weights only 650grams.

The price has not yet been announced officially because Hivision is looking for worldwide distributors of this product, who will then decide how much it will be sold for to end consumers. But you can understand that if Hivision was able to sell those types of laptops for $98 more than a year ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKQbN6..., then surely the price has not gone up since then, at least if you consider what might be the manufacturing costs when this Laptop would be mass manufactured. My guess is that if a giant consumer electronics retailer like Amazon, Walmart or Best Buy approached Hivision to order high quantities of this laptop, it could be sold even below $99 to end users.

Nokia Denies MWC No-show Rumoursn

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - A statement from Nokia South Africa confirms the manufacturer's attendance to the 2010 Mobile World Congress, featuring the usual elements of exhibition as of last year.

Previous rumours suggested that Nokia will now focus on its own event - the annual Nokia World - rather than on third-party shows such as GSMA's Mobile World Congress. This change in strategy would allow the company to save its funds, and allow clients and associates to focus properly on Nokia at its own show.

The annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is a telecommunication event which gathers more than 50 000 delegates, including C-level executives and press from all around the world.

"Nokia is committed to Mobile World Congress, as it has been since the event started. In 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC), Nokia will focus on its infrastructure business and the congress programme of seminars and speaking opportunities, customer and media activities", read a statement released today to PhoneReport.

"We have seen during the recent years that in Mobile World Congress we get the biggest benefit for the infrastructure part of our business. Therefore we will focus on this for 2010 and so Nokia Siemens Networks will continue to have a stand in the exhibition area", continued the statement, pointing out that the brand's network business will be the one in focus at the event.

"Nokia has for more than decade hosted its own Nokia World event which has become a globally recognized leading mobile Internet forum. This forum is our primary forum for showcasing our vision, devices and solutions as well as meet with industry partners and customers", concluded Nokia.

It is uncertain whether Nokia will showcase a flagship handset at the upcoming MWC, as the Nokia N900 has already been officially announced. A Nokia N98 could be knocking at doors on February, with further advancements in mobile technology and to increase competition with Nokia's rivals. A 12 megapixel camera-phone from the Finnish manufacturer is also bound to be released some time in future, and the 2010 MWC may just be the right event.

Ovi Orion: The phone we wish Nokia would make

No one has made a great gaming phone. Sure, Apple sells lots of iPhone games but have you ever tried to play a first-person shooter or football game on an iPhone? It's not a terrible experience but it's nowhere near as good as playing those types of games on a Nintendo DS or Sony PSP. As for why Nintendo or Sony hasn't released a gaming phone yet is beyond us but the demand for a device that bridges the gap between a smart phone and a portable gaming console is definitely there.

Some time ago Nokia tried to fill this mobile gaming gap with N-Gage, a mobile phone range that mimicked gaming devices. The problem with N-Gage though was that it was way ahead of its time and Nokia could only offer users Java-based distractions rather than full-on gaming experiences. After lacklustre sale figures Nokia dumped the N-Gage handset range and instead focused on gaming software and do-it-all smart phones but we think it's time for Nokia to make a gaming comeback.

Our Ovi Orion concept is an evolution of N-Gage handsets, it is a phone/platform offering with a heavy slant on gaming. In other words, if the iPhone is Wii, then Ovi Orion would be Xbox and offer Xbox Live style features. A serious gaming phone for serious gamers. Watch our video below to see the Orion in action and click on the next page for close-up pictures and specs.

Google’s ‘Don’t Be Evil’ Mantra is ‘Bullshit,’ Adobe Is Lazy: Apple’s Steve Jobs Read More http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/01/googles-dont-be-evi

After a big public announcement of the sort Apple had this week for the iPad CEO Steve Jobs often takes time in the day or two afterwards to have a Town Hall at One Infinite Loop, making himself available for questions from employees bold enough to stand up and take one right between the eyes.

This time, the big topics included Google and Adobe — no surprises there. Google recently unveiled its own Android-powered handset, the Nexus One, whose release Jan. 5 prompted Jobs to perhaps over-react by announcing on the same day that the iTunes store had served up three billion apps and that “… we see no signs of the competition catching up any time soon.” Apple’s billionth iPhone app download was greeted with great fanfare, but the two billionth not so much, so it felt a tad like Jobs was feeling some heat.

And the absence of Adobe Flash support on the iPhone for three years and counting, and now on the iPad, is either celebrated by users as a poke in the eye of one of the web’s most dextrous tools, or the most over-rated and overused crutch for decent design.

Jobs, characteristically, did not mince words as he spoke to the assembled, according to a person who was there who could not be named because this person is not authorized by Apple to speak with the press.

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there’s no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s bullshit.” Audience roars.

About Adobe: They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it. They don’t do anything with the approaches that Apple is taking, like Carbon. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5.

The world, of course, includes Google, which last week in a somewhat more modest development bypassed Apple’s iPhone app blockade by unveiling an html5 version of Google Voice, which takes full advantage of mobile Safari on the iPhone. Wired.com found it to be an impressive variation of the app Apple has neither approved nor officially rejected.

And it is, of course, in keeping with Google’s stated view (Android app marketplace notwithstanding) that the future is really in web-based applications and not in mobile apps at all. Web-based applications of the sort html5 makes much more viable.

So, great work rallying the troops, Steve — but be careful what you wish for.

(Update, 1/31 2:00 pm ET: In a post on macrumors.com Arnold Kim adds some more details from the Town Hall, including tough talk from Jobs about a blistering pace of iPhone updates, the LaLa acquisition, the next iPhone and (ahem) another candid assessment, of Blu-Ray.)

(Update, 1/31 4:20 pm ET: Another member of the audience, who also requires anonymity because this person is also not authorized to speak to the media, disputes the “bullshit” quote and says Jobs actually said: “Don’t be evil is a load of crap,” as first reported by Daring Fireball. This source also asserts that Jobs had nice things to say about how Adobe, or at least how the company used to be, as John Gruber’s “little birdie” also told him first.)

Samsung - working on another OS?

...or is it a bada by any other name?

There is a certain amount of confusion regarding Samsung's new operating system - and it's all Samsung's fault. The problem is - which OS are we talking about? Let us explain. The company was recently spotted, red handed and looking slightly sheepish, filing for a trademark for a new operating system. However, it wasn't bada. Oh no. It was something called Vita.

The name, which was apparently trademarked on 22 October last year, has many observers scratching their heads and could mean one of two things: either it is an alternative name for bada (which is fast maturing as a workable system) or it heralds a totally new OS for mobile platforms. More, Samsung also registered a new website called Samsungvita.com, although this site is not currently 'live'.

According to the Ubergizmo website, the Vita name is reserved as a back-up because of a possible trademark concern. There is, apparently, a company in Germany that features the word bada, which might cause trouble for Samsung further down the line.

Whatever the reason, we'll keep you informed on future developments.

More town hall: next iPhone is an A+ update, beats Android

More details have emerged from the post-iPad Apple town hall meeting hosted by Steve Jobs. In addition to setting up Android as a main rival, Jobs promised "aggressive updates" to the iPhone that would beat Android. He also teased that the next iPhone would be an "A+" update.

On Macs, the MacRumors tipster says Jobs expects the 2010 lineup to "take Apple to the next level" but that Blu-ray isn't likely to play a significant part. The software to support the HD movie disc format is a "mess," he said, and Apple is only likely to start adding Blu-ray drives when there's true mass market adoption. Those that want to support Blu-ray have to support advanced copy protection systems like AACS that require more effort to implement than DVD's CSS encryption.

The Apple co-founder also indirectly confirmed some rumors by noting that the Lala acquisition was for the iTunes team and stressed that the iPad is on the level of the iPhone and Mac in terms of significant product launches.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs Says Google's 'Don't Be Evil' Pledge Is BSa

For those of you who doubt the severity of the animosity between Apple and Google, note this weekend's story from Wired, which got the goods on comments Apple CEO Steve Jobs made during a town hall meeting after the launch of Apple's iPad:

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake, they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there's no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don't be evil mantra: "It's bullshit." Audience roars.

Priceless. Classic Jobs, not one to mince words. He also said Adobe was lazy, but the clash between the iconic Flash maker and the iconic computer maker is boring compared with Apple versus Google.

Forget about Google versus Microsoft (and Yahoo). Google versus Apple is bound to be a title fight for the mobile Web over the next decade.

On the Web, those companies are twisting in the wind. See Kevin Kelleher's post on GigaOm for Microsoft's Web follies. Yahoo has to align with Microsoft on search to survive, so that tells you how things are going there.

When Google CEO Eric Schmidt, whom Jobs threw off Apple's board last August, wakes up today and reads those lines, his face could well tighten in a grimace comparable to that of Heath Ledger's Joker from "The Dark Knight."

The iPhone versus Android is today's battle, with Google creating HTML5-based workarounds for Google Voice and other Web apps. Both companies made plays for mobile ad companies (Apple bought Quattro, Google bid for AdMob) to increase their share of the mobile Web money pie.

Later in 2010, Google Chrome OS netbooks may well challenge the new iPad.

Anyone want to guess what will happen between now and then? This is so exciting. Apple and Microsoft always hated each other. Microsoft and Google always hated each other. But Apple and Google, once allies and friendly, are now foes.

That makes for some great movie material. Then again, back to Jobs' alleged comment about Google's Don't Be Evil mantra being BS; he is only voicing what hundreds of other companies that have had to work with Google have said privately.

Ask companies like Reframe It, whose execs feel its annotation service has been usurped by Sidewiki. Ask GPS makers, DNS (Domain Name System) providers, or social software makers or even online dictionaries.

They may tell you Google's Don't Be Evil mantra extends to consumers only, and they would have a fair point. The bottom line is that Google wants to be everywhere on the Web, and if that means stomping out other Web services, then that is collateral damage.

If some in the long tail find themselves buoyed by Google, then great, but if not it's too bad for them.

Firefox for the Maemo 5 platform has a few interesting conceits that set it apart from other mobile browsers, like Opera Mobile and Opera Mini. Mozilla is banking on the uniqueness of its claim to fame--third-party, customizable browser extensions--to help its browser win mobile market share. Add-ons, after all, helped make Firefox the top browser alternative to Internet Explorer in the desktop space. To punctuate the importance of add-ons for Firefox's mobile browser, Mozilla also pushed out on Friday the general release of its bookmark and history-syncing extension, Weave Sync 1.0, for both desktop and mobile.

Mozilla's accomplishment with a mobile version of Firefox is a mixed one, and not only because Maemo is a platform relatively few people have heard of. Nokia's open-source, Linux-based Maemo operating system supports mobile Firefox on just two devices--the N900 and the N810, an Internet tablet. To make matters more limited, just two days ago Mozilla unveiled a third release candidate with a last-minute decision to pull wholesale support for Adobe's Flash plug-in from the build, citing unhappiness with the overall standard of quality. As an aside, this is apparently a sore spot for Adobe, who became miffed with Apple for excluding Flash in its new iPad device about the same time that Mozilla made its comment about degraded performance when visiting Flash sites.

Yet what kind of mobile browser would Firefox be if users couldn't watch videos or adequately view Web sites that heavily rely on Flash? Not a browser anyone could take seriously. As a workaround, Mozilla has released an add-on called YouTube enabler, that early adopters can install to view YouTube videos. Mozilla is hoping to work out other solutions for those who are wary of optionally installing the Flash plug-in, but still want to see select Flash-based content.

Agito Networks Announces Agito Global Enterprise to Slash International Roaming and Long Distance Charges for Mobile Users

New Version of RoamAnywhere Leverages VoIP over 3G Mobile Data Connections and WiFi on Smartphones to Lower International Cellular Costs by Up to 80 Percent; Adds iPhone Support.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Agito Networks, Inc.™, the company delivering innovative solutions in enterprise mobility, announced the availability of Agito Global Enterprise. The Agito Global Enterprise solution includes Agito's RoamAnywhere Mobility Router v4.0, the industry's most powerful mobile Unified Communications (UC) product, purpose built for enterprises to help them mobilize enterprise voice and UC applications to increase mobile worker productivity while reducing costs.

Agito Global Enterprise continues on the company's track record for innovation by uniquely enabling enterprise business calls and UC applications – such as IM and presence – to use a smartphone's low-cost 3G Internet data connection and WiFi, in addition to the cellular network, to reduce international cellular charges by up to 80 percent. Highlights of Agito Networks' new release include leading support for the Apple® iPhone®, iPod® touch and iPad, as well as the BlackBerry Bold 9700, with Agito Networks' innovation delivering superior voice services over previous solutions. The new release also includes new enterprise-class features, including a new platform able to meet enterprise scalability requirements of up to 10,000 users, which is the most in the industry.

Agito Networks' RoamAnywhere Mobility Router extends UC, PBX and deskphone features to mobile phones, while providing industry-leading handover between WiFi, 3G and cellular networks. By leveraging the Agito RoamAnywhere architecture built for network abstraction to now extend to 3G, mobile costs are further reduced beyond leveraging just WiFi – which other solutions are limited to – while also improving in-building coverage. RoamAnywhere uniquely delivers a mobile UC product with high availability, redundancy, security, enterprise scalability, and the industry's broadest IP-PBX and mobile handset support, including VoIP support for the Apple iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Research In Motion (RIM®) BlackBerry® smartphones. RoamAnywhere works with all cellular networks, and natively integrates with enterprises' existing equipment, including WLAN infrastructure and directory stores.

According to Gartner, Inc., "Through 2010, 10 percent of users that travel internationally will be 35 percent of the total service costs for companies that support travel. Through 2014, 80% of enterprises will overspend by an average of 15% on their wireless service costs. (Enterprises should) look to next-generation alternatives like mobile unified communications and voice over WLAN technologies to incorporate wireless, which adds value and synergy to enterprise communications."(1)

As the only provider to deliver enterprise VoIP and mobile UC capabilities across diverse networks, including WiFi, 3G and cellular, for the most BlackBerry, iPhone and Nokia platforms, Agito Networks slashes international direct dialing, roaming and hidden overage charges, reducing international cellular expenses by up to 80 percent in most cases. RoamAnywhere v4.0 can now move mobile users' calls when away from WiFi coverage to 3G cellular data networks which are paid as a flat rate, keeping callers away from costly cellular networks and rates.

"Here at ARINC, we have about 700 smart phone, iPhone and BlackBerry users, and many travel around globe and end up with significant monthly cellular bills – some are several $1,000s each month," said Mike Martelli, senior manager of technology at ARINC Inc, a global provider of communications, engineering, and integration solutions for customers in the defense, commercial, and government industries. "We investigated many different options, but Agito's focus on eliminating international roaming charges made it very attractive for us. Once we have this rolled out to the majority of our users, we believe that we will see significant annual cost savings, somewhere on the order of $50,000 to $100,000 per year."

With the addition of iPhone platform support, Agito Networks is unique in the industry in securing all iPhone external communications with its automatic SSL-based Secure Remote Voice capability that requires no third-party VPN solution. Other solutions simply extend unsecured VoIP communication between the enterprise and public internet to hotel/home/hotspot WiFi locations. Agito Networks also enables best-in-class VoIP quality on the iPhone and iPod touch platforms with its mobile-optimized VoIP and WLAN architecture that is integrated into the RoamAnywhere Dialer. These algorithms provide acoustic echo suppression, a high pass filter, noise suppression and packet loss concealment to eliminate the delay, jitter, and echo experienced with other solutions.

Also, a new platform introduced in this release, the RoamAnywhere 6000 Series scales to support up to 10,000 concurrent users in a single appliance. The 6000 Series offers voice processing and encryption acceleration to handle enterprise loads, and delivers secure, always-on capability with its stateful high availability architecture that keeps calls up and all features running in the case of a failure.

"Enterprises and analysts agree that the main driver for mobile UC is cost savings. With Agito Global Enterprise, enterprises can seamlessly move calls off costly cellular networks and onto WiFi and carrier 3G data networks, making this the industry's truly cost-effective phone system for the mobile enterprise ," said Pejman Roshan, Agito Networks Chief Marketing Officer. "After pioneering seamless network handover and VoIP for the BlackBerry platform, the company is again breaking new ground with superior voice services for the rapidly growing enterprise iPhone user. Enterprises turn to Agito due to its breadth of industry-leading platform support, and its enterprise-class scalability and features that can't be found elsewhere in the industry."

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the new RoamAnywhere v4.0 solution starts at approximately $9,995 for the 2000 Series, $26,995 for the 4000 Series, and $34,995 for the 6000 Series. The new version, including the RoamAnywhere 6000 Series, will be available later this quarter. Subscription-based pricing is also available, starting $11/user/month to as low as $4/user/month. Danube Technologies Offers New Version of ScrumWorks Pro for Scrum Project Management

The most popular Scrum management tool continues to be guided by user input from the Danube Community Portal.

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Danube Technologies, Inc., (www.danube.com) the leader in project management tools and training for the Scrum project management framework, announced the latest release of its ScrumWorks® Pro product. ScrumWorks Pro 4.3 includes improvements to the tool's Sprint Burndown Chart, Team Member Load Report and filtering with Themes. The release, which is the third upgrade since the enterprise-ready ScrumWorks Pro 4 was launched in Aug, 2009, represents Danube's commitment to responding quickly to customer feedback through the Danube Community Portal (http://community.danube.com).

"The level of participation among our users on the Danube Community Portal has been staggering," said Laszlo Szalvay, president and CEO of Danube. "Hearing from our user-base in such a direct way has allowed us to focus on improvements that generate immediate value for our users as well as accelerate the rate at which we deliver upgrades. In my mind, this is an illustration of what can happen when the makers of a tool and its community of users can unite around a common goal—improving project and program management with Scrum."

New features in ScrumWorks Pro 4.3 include:

* Upgraded Sprint Burndown Chart. ScrumWorks Pro's Sprint Burndown Chart receives a major upgrade with the addition of a second line: tasks done/not done. This allows teams that do not use task-level estimation to nevertheless "burn down" tasks in Sprints.
* Tasks No Longer Require Estimates. To help support task burndown in the Sprint Burndown Chart, tasks no longer require estimates.
* Enhanced Team Member Load Report. This sprint-level report now displays the total task hours yet to be allocated to team members. This helps teams better visualize the total unallocated capacity in the sprint at any time.
* Sub-Total for Selected Product Backlog Items and Tasks. Now users can select a sub-set of the product backlog or sprint from the Product window and receive an instant sub-total of the number of PBIs/Tasks and their corresponding effort estimates in the new status bar result in no more manual math.
* Editor Enhancements. The work item editor now includes the item's key for easier identification.
* Expanded Theme Filtering. When filtering using Themes, users now have the option to "exclude" selected Themes from filtered or highlighted results.
* Fixes. Several issues have been resolved, including a security issue related to Active Directory installations configured to accept empty passwords, Java Web Start caching, and more.

Pricing and Availability

ScrumWorks Pro 4.3 is available now and can be purchased directly from Danube. Pricing is offered through an on-site, per-seat subscription license that starts at $289-per-user, per-year, or less than $25 per-user, per-month, as well as an on-site, per-seat fully paid license for $500. Vangard Voice Systems' New AccuSpeechMobile/FFA Delivers Fast, Reliable, Voice-Directed Productivity to Mobile Field Force Automation Market

Hands-Free, Voice-Directed Capabilities Speed Productivity of Existing Mobile Field Service Applications by 30% Using New Mobile Device-Resident, Server-Independent Voice Solution.

IRVINE, Calif. -- Vangard Voice Systems, Inc. (Vangard), the innovator of AccuSpeech®Mobile voice technology announced the availability of AccuSpeechMobile for Field Force Automation (FFA) the first reliable and affordable voice-enablement platform for upgrading new and existing mobile field service applications with fast, accurate and intuitive voice-directed data collection and navigation controls. AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's mobile device-resident, server-independent voice-enabling technology adds comprehensive "hands-free" voice-directed commands to existing field service applications, achieving incremental productivity gains of 30% or more compared to slower, distracting, error prone "fat finger" data entry and navigation.

Vangard's AccuSpeechMobile/FFA is an affordable voice-enablement platform that provides all the tools and technology to quickly voice-upgrade new and existing wireless, wired or "store and forward" field service applications at an average daily cost of $1.25, or less per/mobile worker. A productivity driven ROI can be achieved in just weeks. For field service IT operations, AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's cost of ownership is a fraction of older, costly and functionally-limited, server-dependent solutions typically employed in functionally limited warehouse and CRM applications.

"Until now the field services market has had little confidence in costly server-dependent voice solutions, incapable of empowering the mobile worker to voice-collect and transact, 'heavy field service data' at the point of service," said Bob Bova, president and CEO of Vangard Voice Systems. "Now, completely un-tethered from server-dependencies, AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's device-driven voice technology offers a reliable, affordable, fully functional voice solution for the field services market. Now IT organizations can easily leverage hands-free voice capabilities to substantially improve field service productivity, service, and reduce costs in asset management, dispatch, delivery, ticket management, mobile inspections, maintenance, repair, inventory, location-based GPS and other field operations."

New Productivity Gains

Using AccuSpeechMobile/FFA, Vangard Voice business partner, Z-Space Technologies experienced a 37% increase in productivity when adding hands-free voice-directed capabilities to its vehicle inspection application. "Voice technology for the field services market is ready for prime time with AccuSpeechMobile/FFA," said Tim James, Chief Operating Officer of Z-Space Technologies. "The productivity gains we achieved with our inspections application demonstrate how voice-directed technology can impact mobile field service operations. With AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's reliability, affordability and performance, we're able to accelerate the adoption of voice-directed operations by our resellers and customers."

To further underscore the impact of AccuSpeechMobile/FFA in the field services market another Vangard customer achieved a 77% increase in productivity, by voice-powering a public works asset inspection. Inspection time was reduced to just under 4 minutes using hands-free, eyes-free voice commands, compared to from 18 minutes using keyboard data entry.

Vangard's white paper, 'The Next Productivity Accelerator for Field Service Operations' is now available.

New Hands-Free Mobile Voice Productivity Interface

AccuSpeechMobile/FFA provides a non-invasive voice enabling development environment and device-side voice operations client solution that together enable a complete, fully functional "voice-keyboard" or voice-interface for existing "data heavy" Web, Windows Mobile or Back-End enterprise field service applications. The mobile worker's new voice interface, speeds mobile performance by eliminating the distracting, error prone reliance on manual "fat-finger" keyboard and pull-down menu data entry; it reduces dependency on visual monitoring of mobile screens, and provides increased safety and freedom to multi-task, when liberated from physical manipulating the mobile devices.

Affordability and ROI

AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's affordability is due to its non-invasive, device-resident approach which eliminates the integration costs associated with older server-dependent voice solutions. AccuSpeechMobile/FFA's new device-resident voice technology can voice-upgrade a typical new or existing field service application for a field service workforce as small as 100, for as little as $1.25 per/worker, per/day. Return on investment can be achieved in as little as 4 to 6 weeks making AccuSpeechMobile/FFA a cost-effective productivity investment for systems integrators, ISV's and enterprise IT organizations.

Global Intellectual Property Leader Marshall Phelps Joins Article One Partners Board

Former Head of Patents at Microsoft and IBM, Marshall Phelps, Appointed to Article One Partners Board of Directors.

NEW YORK -- Article One Partners, the world's largest patent validation firm, announced the appointment of Marshall Phelps to its Board of Directors. The Director position with Article One is Phelps' first board involvement within the IP industry since he left Microsoft last year.

Mr. Phelps has had an extraordinary career and is a prominent leader in the patent industry. He oversaw Intellectual Property and Licensing at IBM for 28 years. Chairman Bill Gates then recruited Phelps – the legendary "godfather" of intellectual property who had turned IBM's modest IP Portfolio into a $2 billion per year revenue stream – to work his magic for Microsoft. In his role as Corporate Vice-President of IP Policy and Strategy at Microsoft, Phelps was responsible for setting the global Intellectual Property Strategies and Policies for the firm. Phelps has also served as the Microsoft Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property for the Legal & Corporate Affairs group, where he supervised Microsoft's intellectual property groups and oversaw the company's IP portfolio management (comprising well over 60,000 patents and patent applications worldwide).

In Phelps' 28 year career at IBM, he served as Vice President for Intellectual Property and Licensing. He then became the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Spencer Trask Intellectual Capital Company LLC, which specialized in spinoffs from major corporations such as Motorola Inc., Lockheed Martin Corp. and IBM. Phelps is an Executive-in-Residence at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and an advisor to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on IP matters.

"Article One's approach to researching patent quality is a perfect example of how virtual communities of people, networked across the world, deliver new levels of business impact without requiring direct knowledge of or control over the technology infrastructure supporting them," said Marshall Phelps, upon joining Article One's Board of Directors. "I was attracted to the Article One Partners community as a powerful example of how difficult problems can be solved at an accelerated pace, by engaging and incentivizing a global community to focus their efforts upon a defined challenge."

"Marshall is one of the world's top experts in the field of intellectual property. His experience in leading Microsoft's patent strategies and IP policy on an international scale provide the guidance Article One needs to further grow its Fortune 1000 client base," said Paul DiGiammarino, president of Article One Partners. "We're delighted to add Marshall's leadership and proven guidance to our Board, and look forward to the impact he'll have upon Article One's market leadership and long-term success."

About Article One Partners

Article One Partners, LLC is the world's largest patent validation firm. It employs a global human search engine in many languages to locate, identify, analyze and present previously undisclosed evidence of patent validity from anywhere in the world. The comprehensive nature and success of the Article One method is helping to legitimize the validity of all patents. Community members, our Advisors, who submit undisclosed evidence can earn up to $50,000 per research project and share in five percent (5%) of Article One's net annual profit.

Article One clients sponsor research Studies for many reasons, including to assist with patent litigation, to strength pending patents and to resolve other crucial patent validity issues. The result is a highly rewarded community that provides a citizen's review of patent validity. This review justifies the monopoly pricing that patents effectively confer upon their owners. It also serves to energize the U.S. patent reform movement. To learn more about Article One, or to become a member of our community, visit www.ArticleOnePartners.com.

Mobile Messenger Works With Mobile Giving Organizations And U.S. Wireless Companies To Expedite Red Cross’ Receipt Of Haiti Relief Donations

LOS ANGELES, CA — Mobile Messenger, the leading mobile solutions provider, announced that it is working closely with a number of U.S. wireless companies and mobile giving organizations to expedite the delivery of consumers’ SMS-based donations to the Red Cross International Relief fund and other charities for their rescue and recovery efforts in the Haiti disaster. As this unprecedented mobile relief effort continues to grow, the collaboration between Mobile Messenger, its mobile giving partners and wireless companies ensures that the Red Cross and the charities can receive and put the much-needed funds to use as soon as possible.

Since the earthquake, donations to mobile giving campaigns have been streaming in, in unprecedented volumes with as much as $5.5 million dollars donated per day. As aid organizations from around the world rally to send rescue teams and begin dispersing help, Mobile Messenger is facilitating the flow of millions of dollars of aid to the Red Cross, Doctors without Borders and several other charities that Mobile Messenger serves through its secure, high-capacity gateways to all wireless companies in the United States. Traditional mobile giving campaigns can take up to three months from the time a donation is texted to when the charity actually receives the funds, according to experts at Mobile Messenger. But given the scope of the unfortunate tragedy in Haiti, and the immediate need for relief funds, Mobile Messenger and the organizations involved in the mobile giving efforts have agreed to bypass normal procedures in order to get donations to the Red Cross and the charities as quickly and efficiently as possible – in some cases within less than one week of a mobile user confirming their pledge via text message from their mobile handset.

“What happened in Haiti was truly devastating and unfortunate, and it is astounding to the see the outpouring of donations the American people have made to the Red Cross Relief effort,” said Michael Iaccarino, president and CEO of Mobile Messenger. “Given this remarkable level of generosity, it’s important that concerned citizens see their donations put to use now, rather than three months down the road. By making this temporary change to the way these donations are processed, Mobile Messenger and our mobile giving and wireless partners are proud to spare no effort in bringing immediate help to the many thousands of victims who have been devastated by the earthquake.”

Jon Wells, vice president of marketing at Verizon Wireless, noted, “Verizon Wireless has advanced $7.82 million – 100 percent of the money our customers pledged in one week – to the American Red Cross. At this time of tremendous need when money needs to reach the people in Haiti quickly, we are able to set aside normal processes to expedite payment direct to the Red Cross because of our relationship with Mobile Messenger.”

As of Sunday, January 23, U.S. wireless customers had pledged nearly $23 million to the Haiti relief effort via text messaging short-codes. Mobile Messenger encourages people to continue their generous support for the Red Cross and the other charities.
