5 Days a Girl Trapped in a Nest of Crocodiles

Nadia Bloom, 11 years old girl who suffered from Asperger's syndrome was found alive after five days immersed in a swamp full of alligators in Florida, United States. Nadia was last seen riding a bicycle and went into the woods to make a video of nature. Kevin Brunelle, head of police in Winter Springs, Florida, said that teenage girls suffer from mosquito bites, dehydrated, and hungry, but she was fine. "I never believed in miracles, I now believe," said Brunelle.

Nadia buried in the swamp up to her waist when found. "I'm glad you found me. I do not believe you guys saved me." Nadia said the rescuers. Authorities had been searching for Nadia in a wooded area by using heat-seeking radar equipment, helicopters, bloodhounds, and a team of divers. Volunteers have also been combing the area, and they used machetes to cut grass.

The girl's father, Jeff Bloom, said: "We are overflowing with love all people. All the people around the country to pray." Nadia found James King, a member of Metro Church in Winter Springs. Bloom's family are also congregations of the church. King said, "God has led me directly to Nadia because I have been praying." The girl was then taken to the hospital and is being treated for mosquito bites, but not in a life-threatening condition.

Adobe vs. Apple is going to get uglier

You think things are bad now between Apple and Adobe? Just wait until the lawsuit.

sually I write about security here, but Apple's iron-bound determination to keep Adobe Flash out of any iWhatever device is about to blow up in Apple's face. Sources close to Adobe tell me that Adobe will be suing Apple within a few weeks.

It was bad enough when Apple said, in effect, that Adobe Flash wasn't good enough to be allowed on the iPad. But the final straw was when Apple changed its iPhone SDK (software development kit) license so that developers may not submit programs to Apple that use cross-platform compilers.

Officially, Adobe's not talking about such actions, but there's no question that Adobe is ticked off big time at Apple. I mean how often in print does one company representative say about a former partner, "Go screw yourself Apple," as Lee Brimelow, an Adobe platform evangelist, did on his personal Web site, The Flash Blog. While Adobe had him retract some of his words, and the blog now has a big disclaimer, "[Adobe would like me to make it clear that the opinions below are not the official views of the company and are entirely my own.]" we can be sure that within Adobe's offices far stronger words were used to describe Apple's attitude towards Flash.

For now, Adobe spokesperson Wiebke Lips maintains that "We are aware of the new SDK language and are looking into it. We continue to develop our Packager for iPhone OS technology, which we plan to debut in Flash CS5." Flash CS5, which is part of Adobe Creative Suite 5, arrived on April 12th, but, at this point, it can't be used to create i-device applications.

Indeed, the net effect of Apple's licensing change, according to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, is to make it impossible to use cross-compilers, such as the Flash-to-iPhone compiler in Adobe's upcoming Flash Professional CS5 release. This also bans apps compiled using MonoTouch -- a tool that compiles C# and .NET apps to the iPhone." In other words, Adobe, Microsoft, not only can you not have Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight running natively on an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad, you can also forget about creating an iWhatever program that can get around that requirement.

Adobe, the king of Internet video with 95% Web browser market penetration, is not one bit happy about being locked out of Apple's lucrative mobile device market. Novell's MonoTouch group is "reaching out to Apple for clarification on their intention, and believe there is plenty of room for course-correction prior to the final release of the 4.0 SDK." Adobe, which doesn't want to let go of its hold on Internet-based video, isn't anything like as optimistic.

So, unless things change drastically between Apple and Adobe in the next few weeks, from what I'm hearing you can expect to see Adobe taking Apple to court over the issue. It's not going to be pretty.

Adobe evangelist tells Apple: 'Go screw yourself'

The employee expressed his outrage over Apple's new terms for iPhone developers.

Responding to a change in the licensing terms for developers building applications for version 4.0 of the iPhone, a technology evangelist for Adobe Systems has told Apple to go perform an anatomically impossible act.

"Go screw yourself Apple," wrote Lee Brimelow, an Adobe platform evangelist, on his personal Web site, The Flash Blog.

The post is the latest volley in an escalating war between Apple and Adobe. This week, Apple changed the licensing language for its iPhone SDK (software development kit) in such a way that developers may not submit programs to Apple that use cross-platform compilers (or compilers that would allow them to write a program once and have it run on either the iPhone, Android or any other platform with no changes).

As it happens, Adobe plans to introduce just such a cross-platform compiler with version 5 of its Creative Suite content creation package, due out on Monday.

Observers have pointed out that Apple's decision will affect not just Adobe, but any other makers of cross-platform compilers. But the move comes after Apple has banned Adobe's Flash Player from its iPhones and iPads, with Steve Jobs instructing Web developers to use HTML5 instead.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Friday, Adobe identified Apple's refusal to allow Flash on its devices as a "risk factor" for its business that could steer users toward "alternative technologies."

Adobe's official response to the new license terms had thus far been measured. A spokeswoman sent back the message, by e-mail: "We are aware of Apple's new SDK language and are looking into it. We continue to develop our Packager for iPhone OS technology, which we plan to debut in Flash CS5."

Brimelow, however, does not withhold his contempt. Apple's action "is a frightening move that has no rational defense other than wanting tyrannical control over developers and more importantly, wanting to use developers as pawns in their crusade against Adobe," he wrote.

Brimelow's blog has a disclaimer stating the opinions expressed there are his own and not those of Adobe. The WHOIS Internet domain name information service backs this claim, listing Brimelow, not Adobe, as the owner of Flashblog.com.

Adobe, evidently, was at least aware of the blog post just as it went live. The second paragraph mentions that a line was edited out on behalf of Adobe. The earlier version of the post apparently stated that "What is clear is that Apple has timed this purposely to hurt sales of CS5."

Brimelow's blog post closes with a final jab: "Comments disabled as I'm not interested in hearing from the Cupertino Comment SPAM bots."

Adobe has confirmed that Brimelow works for Adobe.

Earthquakes Injure 10,000 People in China

Earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale, killing about 400 people Wednesday at the High plains of Tibet, southwestern China and injured more than 10,000 people, and houses, schools and offices collapsed. Earthquake aftershocks damaged house in the Yushu area, ethnic Tibetans. "I saw injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack the marquee, our lack of medical equipment, medicines and medical workers," said Zhuohuaxia, a local spokesman told Xinhua.

Sent troops to the area and aid from private organizations have been dispatched from the provincial capital, Xining. "The people very scared," said Pierre Deve, from Snowland Service Group, a non-governmental organizations, adding that many despair of those still trapped. Tibetan Plateau is often hit by earthquakes, but the victim is usually less because not many people live in the area. Government officials told the state media most of the houses were completely destroyed. Mobile web bigger than desktop internet by 2015

GLOBAL – Within the next five years the mobile web will be bigger than the desktop internet according to a new report by Morgan Stanley, as reported today on Mashable. The 87-page report is rammed full of facts and figures, but the one that interests me is the one in this story’s headline. Nokia has talked for a good while now about how the majority of the world’s population will experience the internet for the first time on their mobile devices. And, with devices such as the Nokia C3 heading people’s way soon, it’s no surprise either, really.

How the mobile internet will impact around the world is an interesting thing to contemplate, particularly when we consider emerging markets which, as Mashable points out, still have single digit percentage penetration of 3G. But consider services such as Nokia Life Tools. With SMS as the basis for communication with the device, the information being sent is itself coordinated and sent from what is in effect, the internet. Does that constitute an internet experience?

In the developed world services such as Ovi Maps are rapidly changing how we interact with our devices. Of course, you can use Ovi Maps without any connection at all, to the internet or the cell network, but connect to both and the experience is enhanced substantially (finding stuff local to where you are, and of course just being able to communicate!).

I’ve believed for a long while now, and this is again a Nokia mantra (internet of things, anyone?) that the internet experience on a mobile device will be vastly different to the one we experience on the desktop. It isn’t just about typing a URL into a browser and going to a website. It’s using the internet for what it’s best at (moving information from one place to another) and matching that with the best skills of the device to hand.

See what Nokia thinks the world will look like in 2015
Mashable cites the report’s inclusion of a wide variety of internet-based devices to come up with the bigger-than-the-desktop figure for 2015. Things like book readers, tablets, GPS devices and even wireless home appliances as being pretty influential, along with online services, in driving the growth. Good thing MeeGo is gathering pace then, it seems.

The mobile web is like the second coming of the internet. There’s little doubt that, with an already installed base in excess of 4 billion users, it’s going to be bigger, better and much more exciting than the desktop equivalent. And I can’t wait. How about you?

Pantech unveils first Android-based smartphone in S. Korea

SEOUL -- Pantech Co., South Korea's No. 3 handset maker, unveiled Wednesday its first Android-based smartphone, betting on Google Inc.'s mobile operating system to expand its share in the local high-end smartphone segment.

Pantech's new model "Sirius," which will be the third Android phone made available here, is tailored to the South Korean market, the company said, with an emphasis on social networking services and Web browsing.

Android, initially developed by Android Inc., a firm later purchased by Google, is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system and other key applications.

The phone's 3.7-inch screen displays all content available on the Web, including Flash videos by Adobe Systems Inc. that are not supported on Apple Inc.'s iPhone or iPad. Adobe's Flash, used to display multimedia on Web pages, is widely prevalent among South Korean sites.
Powered by a 1-gigahertz snapdragon processor from Qualcomm Inc., the fastest chip available in the market, the forthcoming model is priced at 900,000 won (US$807) and is scheduled to be offered by SK Telecom Co. later in the month.

The company's executives predict that the Android phone market in South Korea has the potential to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which topped 500,000 in sales in four months. Pantech aims to focus on the Android system for its smartphone business, with up to 10 models expected to be released this year.

Pantech, which absorbed Pantech & Curitel Communication Inc. as of January, sold 3.35 million handsets last year, trailing Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. in the local market. It did not disclose a sales target for this year.

The company is currently "in talks" with several overseas telecom carriers, including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Japan's KDDI Corp., to bring its Android smartphones to offshore consumers, Park Chang-jin, executive vice president and head of marketing, told reporters.

Pantech and Pantech & Curitel have been put under a debt rescheduling program since a 1.28 trillion won bailout by the state-run Korea Development Bank (KDB) in 2007. The company, which posted 10 consecutive quarters of profits into the fourth-quarter of last year, aims to chalk up 5 trillion won in annual revenue by 2013 as it expands its businesses in Europe, China, India and Southeast Asia.

HTC examines a question of the development of its own operating system

One of the most important producers of [smartfonov] and communicators, Taiwan company HTC, studied a study of the possibility of failure of the use in its models of operating systems from Microsoft and Google. In this case are studied the prospects of developing their own operating system, which would possess functional similar to two those name aboved. This information reported the financial director of the company Of taoyuan, entering the composition of corporation HTC, in the telephone interview for the information agency Of bloomberg.

The development of its own operating system for the company HTC would decrease dependence on the strange developers of operating systems and would make it possible directly to interact with the developers of applications. If we look at such successful producers of [smartfonov] and communicators as the companies Of apple and RIM, then it is possible to note that they have their own platforms. At the same time HTC, although he is significant player on the World Market are let out [smartfony] exclusively on the basis of platforms from the companies Of microsoft and Google. Only exception from this rule became the apparatus HTC Of smart, but it is also developed on the strange platform - BREW from the company Of qualcomm.

Some analysts note the absence of time for the prolonged reflections HTC about the possibility of designing by our own OS, although all recognize that this question is much more complex than the simple “to have or not to have” [proprietarnoe] [po]. Also company is called among the basic possible buyers of the producer Of palm. Together with this corporation can be acquired its operating system of webOS. However, the value of the latter on the World Market is small. The accordingly published in February statistics of the use of operating systems in the mobile devices, prepared by the agency Of gartner, in the first place remains Symbian, which is established in 46.9% of all mobile devices. It follow RIM (19,9%), iPhone OS (14,4%), Windows Of mobile (8,7%), the diverse variants Of linux (4,7%) and Android (3,9%). WebOS it occupies last place having only 0,7%.

Google Admits to Downgrading Image Quality in Android 2.1

Earlier this week, Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate Technology Corporation (whose display testing tools we use to evaluate monitors and HDTVs) discovered that Android 2.1's picture gallery offers lower image quality than the previous version's gallery.

Using a Motorola Droid, he found that the picture gallery application in Android 2.0.1 offered 24-bit color depth, but after he updated the Droid to Android 2.1, the new picture gallery application had downgraded images to 16-bit color depth.

Google confirmed Dr. Soneira's findings with the following statement:

The Gallery app in Android 2.0.1 is different from the Gallery app in Android 2.1. Google developed Gallery in Android 2.0.1, which uses 24-bit color rendered using 2D technology. On the other hand, Cooliris created Gallery in Android 2.1, which uses 16-bit textures rendered using 3D technology. We don't have anything specific to share at this time regarding the Gallery app in future versions.

New iPhones Rumoured To Be Arriving June 22nd

Mac Daily News has caught wind of some information that points to Apple releasing the next-generation iPhone on June 22nd.

The telltale sign is the renting of a conference center, where all three previous generations of iPhones have been announced. However, if Apple holds true to its past, we’re likely to not hear anything out of the company until well closer to time.

The ModMyi forums are the epicenter of this information, with writer Messany stating “”Although no confirmations have yet come from Apple (naturally), there is speculation that the big [next-gen iPhone] reveal could take place on June 22nd”.

He goes on to say “For what its worth, while no concrete evidence has turned up to suggest the announcement of a Verizon iPhone at the June 22nd event, a late-breaking tip from Flurry Analytics suggested the possible existence of a Verizon iPhone being used in the US in recent days.”

Only time will tell, of course. But you can rest assured that The Next Web will bring you every bit of information (and a few rumors as well) as soon as it becomes available.

POWERVR Graphics, Video and Display IP Cores

POWERVR™ visual IP technologies have been developed over more than 15 years to meet the most demanding requirements of high volume mobile and consumer applications. With their roots in arcade and digital TV, POWERVR visual technologies lead the world in delivering exceptional levels of performance while delivering low power, small silicon area and high levels of system latency tolerance when integrating with unified memory and other shared resources.
POWERVR Graphics

POWERVR graphics technology is based on a concept called Tile Based Deferred Rendering (TBDR). In contrast to Immediate Mode Rendering (IMR) used by most graphics engines in the PC and games console worlds, TBDR focuses on minimising the processing required to render an image as early in the processing of a scene as possible, so that only the pixels that actually will be seen by the end user consume processing resources. This approach minimizes memory and power while improving processing throughput but it is more complex. Imagination Technologies has refined this challenging technology to the point where it dominates the mobile markets for 3D graphics rendering, backed up by an extensive patent portfolio.

The latest generation of this advanced architecture is the POWERVR SGX Series5 and Series5XT families of graphics IP cores. Series5 architecture takes the TBDR capability to a new level. With a level of scalability from 1 to 8 pipelines and beyond, based on the unique Universal Scalable Shader Engine (USSE), POWERVR SGX brings fully compliant OpenGL ES 2.0 shader-based graphics capability to mobile and consumer platforms. Series5XT architecture further builds on the underlying strengths of Series5, delivering significant performance advantages through increased floating point and instruction throughput as well as natively supported YUV and color space conversion. This architecture also significantly further extends the scalability of the architecture by enabling multi-processor implementations, with up to 16 core instantiations possible that deliver better than 95% linear performance scaling of both geometry and pixel processing resources. The total Series5 and Series5XT portfolio therefore enables the industry’s broadest range of performance/area options, from the smallest single pipe SGX520 core up to the 64-pipe SGX543MP16. All popular APIs and OS are supported by all SGX cores, including OpenGL ES 2.0/1.1, OpenVG 1.1, OpenGL 2.0/3.0 and DirectX 9/10.1 on Symbian, Linux, Android, WinCE/Windows Mobile and Windows 7/Vista/XP.

The SGX family of cores builds heavily on the unprecedented success of the previous generation, POWERVR MBX. Widely respected as the dominant graphics acceleration technology for first generation true smartphones in terms of units shipped and in production, MBX and MBXlite delivers fully compliant OpenGL ES 1.1 capabilities as well as OpenVG 1.0 vector graphics and extensive 2D capabilities. Backwards compatibility from SGX to MBX also ensures that any applications developed for MBX not only execute on SGX, but do so with better performance and efficiency than ever before.

Completing the portfolio of graphics IP cores is POWERVR VGX. This innovative new IP core architecture delivers native OpenVG 1.1 and OpenWF 1.0 compliant acceleration with extremely small silicon area footprint and low host overhead, whilst maintaining all the benefits of TBDR leading to market-leading vector graphics performance and quality with minimal CPU loading.

POWERVR MBX and SGX graphics IP cores have been selected by industry leaders such as TI, Intel, Freescale, Renesas, Samsung and NXP to power their application processors' graphics functions.
POWERVR Video

POWERVR video technology builds on the underlying architectural philosophies of POWERVR graphics: use the lowest power and memory bandwidth, while delivering the highest performance. This engineering philosophy has resulted in the POWERVR VXD decoder and VXE encoder families of video codecs supporting all the latest standards including H.264 High Profile, VC-1 and AVS. The third-generation VXD IP cores use a series of multimode hardware engines controlled by our own META MTX 32-bit embedded SoC Processor core to deliver a multi-standard video decoder capable of decoding dual HD streams in less than 150mW in a 65nm technology. This exceptional capability means that HD content can now be decoded and viewed on a mobile phone, or played from the phone directly on to a HD panel – and you'll be able to watch the entire film, not just the first 30 minutes! All VXD cores are also multi-stream as well as multi-standard, which means that a single core can decode multiple streams at the same time, depending on operating clock frequency. The header processor identifies the appropriate standard and reconfigures the hardware engines on a frame-by-frame basis, such that multiple streams can also be multiple standards. So, the ability to interactively preview and browse content from various sources is now a reality.

VXD Block DiagramOur third generation VXE multi-standard video encoder family complements the VXD decoders, creating a total solution for cameras and web 2.0 platforms. VXE cores encode all key standards in HD or SD resolution – like VXD they are multi-standard. When combined with VXD cores, mobile platforms can now manage HD content as easily and with comparable power consumption to audio players today.

All VXD and VXE cores support all the major standards (range varies according to individual core) including H.264 (Base to High profile), MPEG4, MPEG2, VC-1/WMV, AVS, Sorenson and JPEG. Some VXD cores now also offer hardware rotation and scaling, delivering significant reductions in bandwidth and power consumption. When combined with SGX cores, scaling can also be done by the SGX core, making the combination of VXD, VXE and SGX extremely powerful for a wide range of multimedia applications.
POWERVR Display

Imagination Technologies' long association with the TV industry has enabled us to develop an unrivalled range of display enhancement technologies for HDTV. From skin tone and blue/black stretch engines to state-of-the-art interlace-to-progressive scan conversion technologies; from frame rate conversion to TV output capabilities – POWERVR display technologies have it covered. Indeed, many Tier 1 OEMs are either already adopting or considering moving away from their in-house designs to Imagination-based solutions.

DTV ChipOur POWERVR I2P IP cores achieve exceptional de-interlacer performance up to full HD resolutions, while using innovative new algorithms to deliver the highest performance in far smaller silicon area than traditional solutions. Imagination’s I2P de-interlacers have been adopted by industry leader such as NEC, and are shipping today world-wide in several Tier 1 OEM HDTVs.

Our latest POWERVR FRC IP cores are also generating significant interest, enabling highly intelligent up-sampling of up to HD resolution content from 24fps to 100/120 up to 200/240fps, offering excellent dejudder and motion deblur characteristics.

And, there are more IP cores for our custom SoC IP customers, including our IEP (Image Enhancement Processor), PDP (Pixel Display Processor), CADI (Composite Analogue to Digital Interface) and TVE (TV Encoder output) IP blocks – available through out IMGworks group.

Never before accessible to the consumer, this level of optical quality lens has previously been reserved for the highest echelon of movie making professionals. Compatible with RealD® movies, the innovative lens technology enhances and enriches the viewing experience by providing precision machined, optically correct lenses in place of the cheap, disposable eyewear typically offered by movie theaters. “We’re fiercely committed to every optical aspect of the digital revolution,” said Rob Aarnes, GUNNAR’s President. “The 3D experience is coming of age right now and we can’t imagine a better way to experience this 3D explosion than combining Revolution’s progressive styles and fashion-forward attitude with GUNNAR’s lens technology”.
Revolution Eyewear is a worldwide leader in auxiliary, magnetic clip-on eyewear, a category of eyeglass accessories that allows users to easily add sun lenses under their existing corrective eyewear. With GUNNAR i-AMP 3DTM lenses mounted in Revolution’s patented system, end users can now adapt their eyewear for 3D movie viewing. Previously prescription eyewear users had no choice but to wear a pair of movie-theater glasses over their own eyewear. “We create the most aesthetically pleasing and best quality eyewear in our category,” said Gary Martin, President & CEO of Revolution Eyewear. “We are proud and extremely excited to join forces with GUNNAR Optiks in creating a new, leading-edge category: 3D-Enabled Magnetic Clip-Ons. The evolution of Revolution continues and we’ll never stop striving towards being the most diversified company in eyewear today,” continued Martin, “This new product category is as innovative and exciting as any other product we have ever offered.”

eBeam Initiative Members Publish Collaborative Results at Photomask Japan 2010

Three New Companies Join eBeam Initiative.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The eBeam Initiative, a forum dedicated to the education and promotion of a new design-to-manufacturing approach known as design for e-beam (DFEB), announced that several of its members will jointly present the latest breakthroughs in design-for-e-beam (DFEB) mask technology at Photomask Japan 2010—one of the world's premier symposia for advanced lithography mask technology. The joint proof points demonstrate the progress and effectiveness of DFEB mask technology in supporting the production of advanced logic devices at the 22-nm node and beyond. Photomask Japan 2010 will be held April 13-15 at Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, Japan.

The eBeam Initiative also announced today that three new companies have joined its ranks. These new members—the Advanced Mask Technology Center (AMTC) (a joint venture of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and Toppan Photomasks), Fraunhofer CNT, and HOYA Corporation—are key additions to the Initiative in strengthening the ecosystem that is critical to supporting the commercialization of DFEB mask technology.

"I am looking forward to working with other eBeam Initiative members to implement DFEB mask technology," said Dr. Jan Hendrik Peters, senior technical strategist at AMTC. "By using DFEB mask technology we can address the industry's critical business and technical issues that apply to both 193i and EUV lithography. We are proud to play a role as a member of the eBeam Initiative to help develop technology solutions that extend optical lithography beyond the 22-nm logic node."

At Photomask Japan 2010, eBeam Initiative members JEOL and D2S will present a paper titled "Best Depth of Focus on 22-nm Logic Wafers with Less Shot Count" on April 15, during the Mask-related Lithography session from 10:30-10:50 a.m. In addition, Initiative members JEOL, Petersen Advanced Lithography and D2S will present a paper titled "Writing 'Wavy' Metal 1 Shapes on 22-nm Logic Wafers with Less Shot Count" on April 15, during the EDA, DFM and MDP session from 11:10-11:30 a.m. Both papers represent the first published examples of DFEB mask technology being successfully deployed on advanced photomasks in fewer shot counts and less write-time than traditional e-beam writing techniques. This demonstrates the ability of DFEB mask technology to help extend optical lithography to the 22-nm logic node in a practical manner.

CEO of D2S and managing sponsor of the Initiative, Aki Fujimura, stated, "We now have clear, proven results that DFEB mask technology is viable due to the collaborative efforts of eBeam Initiative members. Combined with the expertise of our new member companies, we are excited to be gaining traction and look forward to future collaborative contributions that further progress the DFEB mask technology roadmap."
