Chinese New Year Could set Text Message Record

Thursday, February 18, 2010

18 Billion SMSs Sent Last Chinese New Year
› Demands on Network Increasing
› Consumers Expect Perfect Performance on Network

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — The short text message has become a popular way for friends and families to keep in touch during holidays. In Sweden alone, 32 million SMSs were sent on one network during Western New Year 2009-10, which corresponds to nine SMSs per subscriber. During the Chinese New Year holiday on February 14, telecoms experts predict that up to 19 billion SMSs will be sent.

Another peak record was set during the broadcast of American Idol in the US, 2009, when 178 million SMSs were sent.

SMS numbers worldwide are expected to reach 2.3 trillion in 2010, according to Gartner.

Network maintenance and support is highly important during peak times, and SMS is complicated in that a short message must cross different networks, and involves various operator billing and charging systems, and all types of mobile phones.

Ericsson supports networks that serve more than two billion people. Eva Elmstedt, head of Customer Support at Ericsson, says: "Keeping our phones, computers and other devices connected is regarded as a basic human need."

Frbiz Evaluates Samsung ST550

-- Frbiz.com, one of China's leading B2B search platforms, evaluates Samsung ST550.

Samsung ST550: 1,999 RMB.

Samsung ST550 is the latest Samsung 2009 digital camera, which has an innovative dual-screen liquid crystal display, so that the user can take photos by themselves with the self-timer.

Samsung's ST550 also has 1152k pixels, the world's highest resolution LCD touch screen; the screen pixel is four times that of a common camera, and it can deliver vibration in tactile feedback mode. In addition, Samsung's ST550 has a mix of 12.2 million pixels CCD, 27 mm wide-angle Schneider lens and 4.6 optical zoom technologies at the same time.

Samsung ST550 has both positive and negative screens, which always provide the most convenient way to complete the most perfect self-timed shot. In front of the camera on the LCD display, the time is displayed, so the user can easily include him/herself in the photo.

Users can also, through simple, intuitive interface, open the LCD screen, and the camera will automatically take the picture. In addition, the LCD screen can do more things. In the children's mode, the front LCD screen can be adapted for children, playing interesting animations to attract children's attention.

Samsung ST550's 27mm wide-angle lens for shooting landscapes or architectural photographs is indeed a very convenient, wide-angle lens, able to capture a broad spectrum.

Frbiz Comments: Samsung ST550's hardware configuration is great: 4.6 times the 27mm wide-angle lens, 3.5-inch touch 1.15 million-pixel high-resolution widescreen LCD, and front and rear double-screen design. Samsung only needs to improve the ST550's level of image quality.

Imagination Creates The Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung to Engage Athletes and Inspire Visitors at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver

Creative agency designs experiential destination to showcase innovation within the spirit of the Olympic Games.

NEW YORK and LONDON -- Imagination, the global brand communications agency, launched the Samsung Pavilion at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. This is the third time Imagination has created an Olympic environment for the Samsung brand. Opening today, the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung will remain open to the public throughout the duration of the Games until February 24th and is expecting up to 8,000 visitors a day.

Imagination and Samsung's global agency Cheil Worldwide have partnered on numerous extraordinary experiential destinations over their 10-year partnership, including previous Olympic activation programs in Salt Lake City (2002) and Beijing (2008). This year's Olympic Rendezvous once again underscores Samsung's commitment to connecting with a wider audience, and its enthusiasm for bringing the public closer to the Games in new, interactive and engaging ways.

"Recognizing that the public is seeking better and more seamless engagement in all areas of their lives, we've created an opportunity for spectators and athletes to interact organically with the Olympic Games and with each other," said Sally Crabb, Creative Director of Sports, Imagination. "Our aim was to create a center for Samsung to add value to the visitors' Olympic experience, and a home-away-from-home for athletes and their families."

Showcasing Samsung's latest product designs and innovative technologies, the Olympic Rendezvous Pavilion serves as a hub of participation, entertainment and hospitality for both visitors and athletes. The aim of the destination is to encourage visitors to spend time with the Samsung brand, enticing them to learn about the latest products through numerous fun and social interactives.

The environment has been designed to reflect the spirit of the Olympics and create lasting connections with visitors by offering experiences through unique games, athletic and design competitions, activities and displays that bring the Samsung brand and products to life.

An intrinsic part of the design solution was to create a canvas for spectators to personally leave their mark on the pavilion. Spectators will be able to upload information, text, and pictures onto the environment. They can also complement Samsung Design Studio's work via design competitions that offer the opportunity to win a snowboard everyday of the Olympics.

The space also offers a unique venue from which athletes can watch all the live stage activities, from the comfort of the Pavilion. The look and feel of the Pavilion, graphic identity, digital installations and digital film experience created by Imagination are all inspired by this year's Vancouver Olympics and express Samsung's power to unite people, inspire excellence and drive technical innovation.

"As a brand Samsung wants to engage in the lives of the Olympic spectators in an unobtrusive way. For Imagination, it's all about creating experiences that make a difference. The live crowd, athletes and press will transform this place into a living, breathing destination," Sally Crabb, Creative Director of Sports, Imagination.

Broadcom Delivers Navigation and Location Based Services in New Handsets From Samsung

Broadcom(R) 'Combo' Chip Solutions Enable OEMs to Add Bluetooth(R), GPS and FM Radio to Greater Numbers of Cellular Phones.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, announced that its Bluetooth®, GPS and FM radio combination ('combo') chip has been selected by Samsung to provide navigation, location based services and key connectivity functionality in a number of new handsets now available. The new Samsung handsets that integrate the Broadcom® InConcert® BCM2075 combo chip include the innovative Blue Earth (GT-S7550) handset, as well as the Corby Pro (GT-B5310).

The Broadcom BCM2075 combo chip integrates three radios (Bluetooth, GPS and FM), and in conjunction with its unique InConcert collaborative co-existence technology, allows these radios to operate simultaneously, and with minimal interference, providing a more compelling user experience. In addition, this connectivity processor offloads many of the communications functions that are usually performed by the host, saving the host's operation for more computationally-intensive applications. Broadcom will demonstrate its BCM2075 combo chip at next week's 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Highlights/Key Facts:

* Wireless connectivity and multimedia functionality such as Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi®, FM and music playback have come to define the smartphone experience, popularizing the advanced handsets among growing segments of the population. However, each of these technologies introduces complexity to the overall phone system and requires additional power, creating challenges for OEMs in delivering handsets that have long battery life and are easy to use.
* Broadcom's InConcert combo chip solutions are designed to significantly reduce the complexity of integrating and using these technologies by offloading processing functions from the host, while also reducing overall system power consumption. With mature, proven implementations of each of these technologies, Broadcom combo chip solutions deliver premium connectivity options that conform to the high performance standards of leading handset makers like Samsung.
o Combo chips have been integrated into leading handsets and other handsets that rely upon advanced wireless connectivity to enable the advanced features consumers have come to expect.
* As one of the top makers of popular smartphones and smart feature phone handsets, Samsung has demonstrated leadership in combining connectivity technologies in unique ways to deliver a range of handsets that appeal to diverse end users. From the Blue Earth phone (which includes a small solar panel to charge the battery) to the customizable Corby Pro phone, Samsung provides users with a range of handsets to choose from.
* The InConcert BCM2075 combo chip solution includes the following:
o The Bluetooth portion of the chip is Bluetooth 3.0 compliant and provides on-chip sub-band codec (SBC) support.
o The FM radio capabilities are among the most advanced in the industry, enabling the enjoyment of live programs as well as integrated MP3 recording to facilitate audio time shifting similar to digital video recorder (DVR) operations.
o The GPS core uses a host-based integration architecture that splits the processing duties between the BCM2075 and the host CPU system to offload the most computationally-intensive GPS activities and provide the lowest power consuming GPS available.
o The technology also allows wireless devices to collaboratively co-exist, providing products enabled with Broadcom wireless connectivity chips the ability to intelligently minimize radio interference issues, synchronizing transmissions to maximize throughput and performance among multiple radio technologies.
* The combo chip solution is now shipping in multiple handset devices from leading manufacturers.

Inbrics Demonstrates Continual Growth With Acquisition of Semiconductor Design Outfit, Nexilion

Momentum Takes MID and Media Convergence Developer to Mobile World Congress.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Inbrics (www.inbrics.com), a leader in media convergence solutions announces its acquisition of publically traded semiconductor design group, Nexilion (Kosdaq A098400). This strategic move will integrate proprietary mobile TV chipset and SoC (System On Chip) technology with Inbrics' cutting-edge products like MID, SoIP and Femtocell and convergence offerings of parent company Insprit (Kosdaq 073130), such as Android, DCD, IP push, 3-Screen Plus and 4G data platforms. This acquisition further solidifies the Korea-based developer's position at the forefront of the global next-generation media convergence market.

"This exciting venture pushes Inbrics further onto the world stage as a pioneer of convergence technology," said Bobby Cha, chief marketing officer at Inbrics. "Our growth strategy continues to optimize our technological capabilities and enhance our global thought leadership. We are delighted by the industry's response to our unique media convergence solutions and the international momentum for our approaching worldwide launch."

The company kicked off 2010 at International CES with the successful premiere of its MID M1, an Android-powered smartphone-like device. The MID M1 is uniquely equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 and an AMOLED touch screen that slides to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. Other features include GPS, Bluetooth, 3G or WiMAX, a 3-megapixel camera on the back, a VGA camera on the front, 16GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot. The device was well received by thousands of industry influencers at CES and will be further spotlighted at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona and CTIA Wireless 2010 in Las Vegas.

Inbrics' technology resolves rising consumer demand for digital solutions that efficiently push data, such as movies and photos, across multiple devices at a rapid pace. Most devices in the home or business cannot talk to each other and thus are not equipped to streamline the process of sharing and accessing data across more than one device. The Convergence One or 3-Screen Plus Android platform developed by Inbrics' parent company, Insprit, promises to make it easy for consumers to access and share digital photos, music, movies and more across multiple devices.

Both Inbrics & Insprit currently have partnerships with global carriers and manufacturers including T-Mobile, SK Telecom, Korea Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Celcom, Samsung, LG, and Kyocera. The company has plans to continue to expand aggressively in the next few years particularly in the U.S., Europe, and China.

British Nanotech Pioneer, Peratech, Receives GBP1.1 Million Investment by YFM Group to Fund Expansion

Ultra Thin, Quantum Effect Touch Sensors are Smart Replacements for Old Fashioned Switches in Mobile Phones, Robotics and Many Other Devices.

RICHMOND, England -- Further to its recent announcements of licensing agreements with Nissha and Samson Electro-mechanics for 3D input technology for mobile phones, Peratech Limited has announced that YFM Group managed Partnership Investment Finance has invested GBP1.1 million into the Company. This will be used for further research and development into Peratech's award-winning, patented Quantum Tunnelling Composite (QTC) technology for touch technology solutions, as well as growing the company's highly successful sales into overseas markets.

"We are really excited by the huge potential of Peratech and its technology," says Mark Winderbank at YFM Group, which is the most active VC investor in UK SMEs. "Peratech's recently announced license deals with major international companies Nissha and Samsung Electro-mechanics demonstrate how QTC can open up exciting new ways of doing things. We are proud to be able to support a fast growing British company with a truly unique technology that has a tremendous world market. Of all the possible investments that we have looked at recently, Peratech stood out because of the strength of its innovative technology and huge growth potential."

The key to QTC's success is that it enables traditional, old fashioned switches to be replaced with ultra reliable QTC versions that offer additional features such as no contacts to wear out and no air gap to be contaminated with water or dust. Moreover, because QTC is force sensitive, it opens up a whole new range of applications where the current flowing is directly proportional to the pressure applied. This enables a new category of touch sensitive, human machine interfaces to be created with a completely new three dimensional aspect. For example, the width of a line being drawn electronically can depend on the pressure applied, which is an ideal feature for Asian and Chinese characters, or pressing harder moves faster down into a menu structure on a mobile phone. Further details at http://www.peratech.com/pr.php

"In these financially challenging times, it is a real testament to both the QTC technology and the team behind it to have received funding of this level," adds Philip Taysom, joint CEO of Peratech. "The Company has invested significant R&D efforts to understand this new class of material science that it has invented. We are now at the stage where its ability to add value and completely new innovative features, which provide significant commercial advantages, are clearly demonstrable as can be seen from the licensing deals that we are closing with Tier 1 international companies."

Alcatel-Lucent Successfully Makes First 4G LTE Calls With Telefonica in Latin America

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has successfully made the first 4G calls in the framework of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) lab tests Telefonica is conducting in Latin America.

With these tests, Telefonica is analysing - in a real environment - the maturity and benefits of the LTE mobile broadband technology. The first services were delivered in Telefonica's labs, using Alcatel-Lucent's end-to-end LTE solution, including base stations, transmission equipment, Evolved Packet Core (EPC), as well as professional design & integration services - in combination with devices from LG Electronics.

In a second phase when the field tests will start, the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequencies will be used to assess LTE's performance in terms of coverage and capacity - offering a new user experience and supporting the delivery of new mobile multimedia applications, such as high-definition video streaming, mobile gaming, high-speed file transfers and video conferencing.

"LTE deployments bring a user experience and quality of service far superior to the current 3G/3.5G networks," says Ken Wirth, president of LTE/4G Solutions for Alcatel-Lucent. "In addition, they accommodate lower costs of ownership thanks to LTE's advanced quality of service (QoS) and technical features such as self-organising networks (SON) that will be analyzed by Telefonica as well."

U.S. International Trade Commission Enters Final Decision in Favor of LG Electronics in Whirlpool Refrigerator Patent Case

WASHINGTON -- Ruling in favor of LG Electronics, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has issued its final decision in a long-running refrigerator patent infringement case brought by Whirlpool Corporation. In its decision, the ITC denied the final remaining patent infringement claim by Whirlpool, denying all of Whirlpool's claims for relief and resulting in a total victory for LG Electronics over all of Whirlpool's patent infringement claims.

The ITC ruled that all but one of the asserted claims of Whirlpool's U.S. Patent No. 6,082,130 for ice storage bins located in refrigerator doors are invalid. The ITC further found that the one remaining claim of the '130 patent does not cover LG's refrigerators and thus is not infringed. As a result, the Commission found no violation and terminated the investigation.

This final decision issued late Friday is the culmination of a trial before ITC Judge Theodore R. Essex, who ruled in favor of LG under his interpretation of the '130 patent and again ruled in favor of LG under the ITC's interpretation of that patent. Unless Whirlpool appeals this decision and eventually persuades the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to reverse these rulings, the ITC's final decision will remain controlling.

Whirlpool originally claimed that five of its patents covered LG refrigerators. During the course of the case, Whirlpool withdrew four of those patents prior to the trial. On Feb. 26, 2009, Judge Essex ruled that that Whirlpool's U.S. Patent No. 6,082,130 does not cover any LG refrigerators; however, the ITC later revised the interpretation of the '130 patent and asked the judge to reconsider the remaining disputed issues based on its new interpretation.

On Oct. 9, 2009, Judge Essex applied the ITC's interpretation and again found that the '130 patent does not cover LG refrigerators and also concluded that all but one of the asserted claims is invalid. The Judge ruled that the ITC should not grant any relief to Whirlpool. That ruling led to the final ITC determination rejecting all of Whirlpool's claims for relief.

LG is one of the fastest growing home appliance brands in the United States. "The final ITC decision reaffirms our leadership in refrigerator technology," said Y.H. Lee, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. James Shad, president of LG Electronics USA, Inc., said, "The ITC's final determination, which eliminates a threat by a competitor to block imports of LG refrigerators, is welcome news for LG customers."

After Whirlpool filed the ITC case, LG filed its own patent infringement cases against Whirlpool, now pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. In that consolidated case, LG seeks monetary damages and an injunction against Whirlpool products that it believes are covered by LG's patents. Whirlpool, in response, has asserted patent infringement claims against LG's refrigerators, including the '130 patent that was at issue in the ITC case. In the Delaware case, LG seeks a judgment that the '130 patent is both invalid and not infringed. That case is scheduled for trial in March 2010.

On Oct. 7, 2009, LG Electronics filed another lawsuit against Whirlpool's French door refrigerators in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey. "LG not only respects other companies' intellectual property (IP) but also seeks to protect its own IP. LG has a superior technology in French door refrigerators protected by its patents. LG will aggressively enforce its rights against any infringing products," said D.H. Song, executive vice president in charge of LG's refrigerator division.
